What are the names of the ports in my MacBook Pro that I can plug an external monitor into?

You have Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort. If you know which external display you want or you already have it, look at the ports it has got and get a Mini DisplayPort adapter for it. There are Mini DisplayPort adapters for DVI, VGA and HDMI.
Most external displays have DVI, VGA or HDMI. If you can use HDMI, use it, because it will provide much better quality. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Mini DisplayPort adapters can be used with Thunderbolt

how much time ipod needs to restore after plugging with external power?

Restore? Do you mean power on after it's been drained for awhile? It depends how long it's been dead. Sometimes it can take awhile (10-20 minutes maybe more) in some cases.

  • MacBook Pro, 10.6.3 hangs after login with external monitor

    Howdy:
This is a weird one and if this isn't the correct forum, please let me know.
I have a two year old MBP that I use 99% of the time with a 30" Apple monitor. It has always worked well. Now, if it is attached to the monitor and I log in, the machine just hangs after I put in the password. It does this also in the troubleshooting "blank" account I have. If I shut the machine down and detach the monitor and external drives, it logs me in nicely. (I'm using it now)
I have restarted from the 10.6 install disk and repaired permissions twice. I have reloaded 10.6 and then did the updatede to 10.6.3. I have used Disk Utility and TechToolPro to repair everything and both say all is okay. Still the problem persists. However, when I reloaded 10.6 and updated it, it logged me in with the monitor once and then when I logged out to restart it, it stopped again.
Could it be a problem with 10.6.3 and external monitors? I don't think so as it worked for a while with it before this started.
The only connection I can find is the monitor.
Does anyone have any clue what is going wrong and what I might do to fix it? Thanks

I need to hang my head in shame. The solution, once found was simple and took only seconds and it was merely a software conflict. I should have gotten that one myself but didn't, because, believe it or not, I didn't think the software was running and I simply forgot about it to begin with.
It turns out, I had Intego Software's Virus Barrier on my computer and it was running. I knew I had it, but thought I had disabled it because it was forever throwing a hissy fit every time my Apple TV checked in. Last week, I updated it without thinking. Apparently, that re-enabled it and it was rejecting the internal process change from the machine-wide log-in screen to the account log-in screen.
The point is I should have remembered that I had updated it and I didn't. If I had recalled the change, I would have zeroed in on that before I spent hours at the Genius Bar, befuddling everyone. On the other hand, it was nice to take my 30" monitor for a nice outing.

  • Satellite P750 - Shutdown issue after removal of external monitor USB 3 hub

Have operated my Satellite P750 laptop with external DeII monitor for a year or more now.
Monitor has a Usb 3 hub. (i have some ext HDD plugged into these. So far no issues. I unplugged the monitor usb hub from laptop (to create wndows image backup straight through the sole usb3 port on laptop.
After this finished i found that i was unable to shutdown or restart laptop. It gets to the light blue 'shutting down' screen; HDD light flashes for 5/10 secs then it stops accessing disk with power still on and stuck at blue shutdown screen; laptop even sounds like it shuts down.
Two things, i can hold down power button till hard stop, then press again to restart, and all is fine; no error messages when win 7 start up again. Or i have once just left it sitting without holding power button- it seemed to be like this for about 4 hours (monitor went to standby cause idle) before powers down.. When i start laptop after this i get windows warning failed to shut down properly.
It took me a while to work out which device was causing the issue; but can now replicate any time.
So - unplug monitor usb hub from laptop; laptop fails to shut down/restart.
Replug DeII usb hub back to laptop; no problem laptop back to normal shut down.
Any ideas??? (this means whenever i go portable with laptop i have to hard shut down/ hold power key to turn it off????)

To be honest I dont know why the system cannot shut down properly without connected USB monitor hub but system shut down issues are mostly related to some processes which are running in the background.
Sometimes such processes are locked and could not be closed due to different reasons. This may prevent the system from shut down
    Maybe this is the case
Try to clean the system as well as the registry using CCleaner (its freeware tool).
You should also check what processes are running in the background maybe one of this processes is related to the hub which cause your shut down problem

  • System Crashed after Partitioning an External Drive

I tried to add a second partition to my external drive but now my system freezes whenever the drive attempts to mount.
Originally, my external drive had a single partition used for Time Machine backups. I used the partition tab in Disk Utility to add a new partition. I selected a size for the partition that was less than the space being taken up by time machine backups. After clicking apply, disk utility seemed to work for 10-20 minutes and then my system suddenly crashed. Everything freezes and the following message appears:
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button".
If I try to restart, the system will crash as soon as the drive begins to mount. The only way I am able to get my system to restart, is to unplug my external drive. I have tried safe mode and I have tried opening disk utility before mounting the external drive but nothing seems to work. It still crashes the system.
I have other backups of this data so I'm not concerned with loosing anything. I just want to get back into disk utility with this drive so I can reformat. Does anyone know how I can bypass without getting the "restart" message so I can erase the disk and start from scratch?
Oh, I forgot to mention, this issue may have resulted from accidentally disconnecting the FW800 while the last backup was taking place. Irregardless, I think the drive is now corrupt and I want to start from scratch.
    HELP!

Thank you VK. Worked like a charm. I used the start-up disk and deleted the problematic partition within Disk Utility. Seemed to work fine after that, but I went ahead and reformatted the drive and started from scratch just to be safe.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Bluescreen after plugging an external display into my MBP 2012 under Windows 7 6 bit

After installing the windows updates for windows 7 64bit on my bootcamp partition, i always get a blue screen, when I plug in my external display into my mbp 2012. Before installing those windows update, i didn't have this problem. Also, while running osx the external display works perfektly.
The error message says something about a igdkmd64.sys file beeing responsibe for the bluescreen. I've tried to install the original bootcamp drivers and the newest intel graphics driver, neither resulted in a change. Thank you for your help and pleases excuse my bad english ;-)

    Hi,
    read the documentation:
    http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/to_pdf?pathname=install.112/e24169.pdf
and you will find multiple errors, you probably did.
Especially the part on preparing storage.

  • Safari crashes after installing iomega external hard drive

I've just installed the iomega desktop external hard drive with firewire and usb 2.0. I'm presently connected to my computer by the USB port. Everytime I go to access Safari or Mail they quit on me after a few seconds. I've now disconnected the drive from my computer and it's fine. I did to a Disk Utility repair after the installation but that didn't help. Is there something I neglected to do? Is there a problem between Mac and Iomega? Should I use the firewire instead?

    Woodswalker wrote:
...Per article, "OS X:  Installing OS X on an external volume", I erased and reformatted the storage device.  Now, checking my Macintosh HD, Mountain Lion is gone.  How do I get it back?
Are you saying that your internal HD doesn't have an operating system on it either, meaning you can't boot your iMac at all? Or that the external was also named "Macintosh HD" in which case, having been erased and reformatted (hopefully with a GUID partition table), you'll need to clone your internal to it once again.

  • Computer completely crashing after  plugging in any ipod except touch

For a while now, every time I plug in any ipod, any generation excluding touch/iphone, a gray window will popup saying I have to reboot the computer.
I figured out that the computer isn't responding well to the hard-drive function of the iPods if it helps.
    I'm running 10.5.6 on a 24" iMac intel

    HI,
*" popup saying I have to reboot the computer."*
Did you restart your Mac to see if it made a difference?
That gray popup dialog is referred to as a, 'kernel panic"...

  • I now get a external monitor error after a year

I have been using an external lcd monitor for about a year and this week I started getting an error after I plugged it in for a while. It would work for 1-4 hours and then the external monitor would say that the frequency was not supported. At this point my MB would freeze and when I tried to restart it, it would not turn back on. The AC cord was plugged in, so the only thing I could do was remove the battery for a couple of minutes and restart.
Each time I plugged the external monitor in it would work for a bit and then freeze again. I tried a different monitor and it froze as well and gave me the error box "optimal resolution is 900x1440 60mz. I tried again and made sure it was detecting the correct monitor in system preferences and that they matched the recommended specs, everything was correct.
    ANY IDEAS?
I don't know what to try, like I said it worked for a whole year without any problems. And my 1 year warranty expired 9 days ago.
I would love some ideas, Thank you!

    Hi frogjet,
Are you connecting over VGA or DVI? I take it you're using the same Apple adapter that you've had for a while? What was the other monitor that also didn't work? Was it also the same connection type?
It's probably worth bringing the computer and the monitor into an Apple Retail Store and having them have a quick look. I think the only problem, is that if it takes 1-4 hours to occur, a GB appointment is only 15-20 minutes long.
Can you maybe grab a screen shot when the issue occurs?

  • After connecting a late 2008 MacBook to an external monitor can I show different images on them?

After connecting an external monitor to my MacBook(late 2008) is it possible to show different images on the two screens at the same time?

Yes. Open System Preference (under the Apple menu) and select Displays. See the instructions in this Apple article for how to continue.
    Best of luck.

  • 2010 Macbook Pro 17 display on external monitor only after power on

THis has happened a few times over the past 6 weeks - I power on first thing in the morning and the primary screen is black, and the login screen appears on the external monitor. Shutting it down and starting up again does the same thing. When it happened before I'd power off, remove the external display, power on and then I'd get the primary display back agin but it's not working this time and I've only got the external display working.
Is there a utility to 'kick' the graphics into the correct mode, or is this some type of hardware problem?
    Thanks,
    Graham

The primary laptop monitor starts blank, and only the external monitor is working.
If I shutdown, unplug the external monitor and power back on the laptop screen stays blank. If I plug the external monitor in the screen that would normally have been on the primary laptop screen is on the external monitor, and the laptop screen remains blank. At this point I can only work with an external monitor plugged in, and that limits my portability a bit

  • HT3131 Clamshell mode not working even after powering off and reconnecting display; external monitor goes black anyway

After connecting an external monitor (non-Mac) to my MacBook (Mac OSX 10.6.6) w/proper adaptor, setting up to use clamshell mode as per manual, the external still goes black even after putting MacBook to sleep, disconnecting and reconnecting external and powering up again as suggested in Support. Displays are set to Mirror. Also, when I open Displays in System preferences, 2 different windows for Resolution settings appear. Where have I gone wrong? This monitor (Viewsonic) came with it's own software for setup on a Windows PC, but of course it is not being used on the MacBook.
    Any help would be appreciated!

For obvious reasons one is just inclined to open the top of the MacBook to wake it when the external goes dark...I did that twice, until I realized that very last step was needed to 'wake' it. It worked. Something so simple, easy to overlook I guess.
I did leave the monitors mirrored, fyi, if I don't then all I can access from the external are the resolution settings. This Viewsonic comes pre-loaded with Windows software of it's own and doesn't quite behanve the way my previous external did, but I got it figured out.
    Thanks for your response, tho!

  • Macbook display randomly garbles. Corrects for a while when I plug in an external monitor. What's up?

I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro that has some random display issues.
    1. The laptop display will put a 1-inch black bar down the screen and shift everything to the right.  It fixes itself for a while when I plug an external monitor into the mini-display port, but then does the black bar thing again.
    2. Screen just totally garbles and I have to do a hard restart. Plugging in the external monitor seems to correct this for a while, too.....
I went into System Settings and unchecked the box so that it would only use the discrete graphics, and it doesn't help.
Failing GPU?  Discrete or on-board? I'm guessing failing discrete GPU......
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi.
PC disks should be FAT32 formatted as they come and if you out the disk into an external drive enclosure be it USB or Firewire, your iMac should be able to mount it and read it.
If you want to use this "re-convert" hard drive as your "permanent" external drive for your iMac and nothing else, I would advise you to reformat the disk to the GUID format (partition), which is recommended for all Intel Macs, because they read and write to external drives a little differently from their PPC counterparts.
Here's the link to how to reformat/re-partition a drive to GUID:
