Licence for RMAN

Hi,
is RMAN licence included in DATABASE Licence or we should buy seperate licence for RMAN ?
Thank you.

I would be careful about making such a statement about "comes along with the database software so you don't need to buy an extra-cost license".
My co-workers and I were talking about this the other day. There are a lot of "options" that come along when you do a default software installation. We define "options" as things you will need to pay for if you start using them.
One that really gets my goat is the Automatic Workload Repository....
Unless things have changed that I am unware of...unless you are Licensed for the Diagnositc Pack you are not to be using the AWR and its reports.
So again...I would be careful about making such statements. :) People might go around thinking that they can use anything that is installed.

    Yes. You need to license the Diagnostic Pack to get AWR.

    Thank You Wener!
    The oracle documentation:

  • How to find licence for Hyperion Software

    Hi,
    I want "Essbase Application Manager" for one of my team member but somehow our desktop support team is not able to find this software in their catalog . I think name of the software may be changed.
    I have same software on my desktop but it is inside "Hyperion Solutions" SOftware . Does anyone have any idea on my situatuin.
    Is there any Hyperion product in which I can ""Essbase Application Manager" for my day to day work
    Also I want to find licence for the Hyperion SOLutions software on my desktop. Can anyone tell me how I can find it ?

    What version of Essbase are you running? I think Application Manager was decommissioned in Version 6 (although it might have been Version 7). It was replaced by Essbase Administration Services(EAS). Application Manager does not need a license as it is just an administrative tool for Essbase. For the license number again it depends on the version. Later version do not have a license number, earlier versions do. In some cases you can get it from App Manager by getting server properties and it will show you. In other versions, you would start Essbase in foreground and it will show you the license as it starts. Essbase 7.16, System 9.3.1 and Version 11 do not have licenses that you have to enter.

  • What are the caveats of using ASM as storage for RMAN backupsets?

    Hello all,
    We are currently evaluating RAC as our standard database platform. Until now we have been using 10g single instance with ASM for datafiles and local filesystems for RMAN backupsets and archivelogs. We chose to use local fileystems for backup components so that we can utilize a Tivoli filesystem backup in order to secure the backup pieces to tape.
    With RAC, we are looking into a shared location for backupsets and archivelogs. OCFS2 is out of the picture due to it not functioning on top of linux LVM. It appears that our only "shared" option is to use ASM for backupsets and archivelogs.
    My concern is that while the data diskgroups and rman diskgroups will be separate, they are both running on ASM and therefore if ASM fails or is corrupted, we have nothing. My current plan is to utilize the Tivoli RMAN MML (TDPO) to backup the backupsets to tape after the ASM backupset has completed.
    What experiences have been had with using ASM for RMAN backups?
    Any advice on additional protection we can employ to ensure that the database remains recoverable?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

    I've personally haven't implemented RMAN with ASM, but you may want to review Faster Backup, Faster Recovery which discusses RMAN utilizing ASM.
    And although you may not get any of the negative aspects from these presentations, you may want to check out High Availability Customer Case Studies, Presentations, Profiles, Analyst Reports, and Press Releases.
    Hope this helps!

  • Database componentes required/excluded for RMAN and Grid control repository

    I'm planning creation of a centralized 10gR2 RMAN repository for my production/dev environment, and needed a basic, barebones database. We may also use that same database as a repository for 10g OEM Grid Control in the future, so I wanted to ensure I was prepared for that.
    None of the documentation says anything about particular required components for RMAN, only that a database is needed. So am I allowed to deselect all items from the following DBCA list? I didn't expect any problems with the optional components, but wanted to make sure that RMAN or Grid control would function, were I to disable Oracle JVM or XML DB. My standard loadout (for better or worse) is to include everything in my production/dev databases, and I didn't want that to be the case with this one.
    Database Components:
    Oracle Data Mining
    Oracle Text
    Oracle OLAP
    Oracle Spatial
    Enterprise Manager Repository
    Standard Database Components:
    Oracle JVM
    Oracle XML DB
    Oracle Intermedia

    Thanks. For that matter, do DBA's in the general population install those standard oracle components? I have them there in my default installs just because of the message 'Oracle recommends you have these installed.' in the DBCA screen.

  • Licence for Development Oracle standard edition

    Hi,
    I am having named user licence for the standard edition Oracle database.
    Can I create multiple instances for the same machine and redstribute my licences internally?
    Can we run multiple versions of oracle on same machine under one license ?

    WARNING: None of this internet advice has any legal standing and you would be absolutely recommended to confirm with your local Oracle sales representative.
    Can I create multiple instances for the same machine and redstribute my licences internally?Yes, as long as you have enough named user licenses to cover all of the users who will be connecting to all those instances
    Can we run multiple versions of oracle on same machine under one license ?Yes, as long as you have enough named user licenses to cover all of the users who will be connecting to all those instances of different versions
    If you have a large number of users (say > 50) it may be cheaper to purchase a processor license for the server. You will need to check this with your local Oracle sales representative as processor licensing has its own licensing metrics e.g. O/S platform and CPU.
    Note that what my sales rep says is ok may not be what your sales rep says is ok, so get confirmation in writing for reference.

    what is best configuration strategy for rman backup.AND BACKUP WITH RECOVERY CATALOG OR WITHOUT RECOVERY CATALOG
    PLEASE TELL ME

    For simply two databases, there really wouldn't be a need for a recovery catalog. You can still restore/recover without a controlfile and without a recovery catalog.
    From this:
    afzal wrote:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY window of 14 days.I am assuming you want to keep two weeks worth of backups, therefore these:
    alter system set control_file_record_keep_time=15 days;
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY window of 14 daysShould be:
    RMAN> sql 'alter system set control_file_record_keep_time=22';
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 14;22 would give you that extra layer of protection for instances when a problem occurs with a backup and you want to ensure that data doesn't get aged out.

  • Licencing for "in-house" solution

    Hi,
    It's probably not the best place to ask, but in case someone could help me.
    From what i understand, Indesign Server is available to licencing firstly and mostly to system integrators. There is not pre-defined plan for in-house developpement (ie. You just cant go and buy a licence throught the website by ex.).
    Also, i understand that the User licence of Indesign (the "user" version) prohibit using it in a client-server setup. The user can launch automation scrips but has to wait for the process to finish, you cant have a application that drive the automation script by managing a pool of process sent by a user (or many users) [on a local network by exemple]. (if i'm wrong on that assumption, please tell me!).
    So i would very likely need a Indesign Server licence for our In-House developpement and there is no plan to resell the "solution" that will be developped with it.
    I have asked through Adobe account for licencing (getting a contact) and was answered this:
    "I need to inform you that you will have to our Adobe Open
    Options Customer Service department at the number listed below, as this
    is a volume license issue."
    I dont understand why it's a volume licence issue as i would very likely just need one licence for in-house use (production).
    Can someone confirm-me if it's the appropriate department to contact or have any information that is not under non-disclosure that would be of help (to me or other people in a similar situation).
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
    I understand your confusion. InDesign Server is a rather esoteric product and was released originally with the concept that it would be provided exclusively by resellers offering custom solutions or software built on the InDesign Server engine. It is not sold in the same way as desktop software.
    It appears that whover you spoke to at Adobe gave you incorrect information.
    My company, Silicon Publishing, resells InDesign Server and we would be happy to sell you a copy. It is also possible to purchase it directly from Adobe or from other resellers. There is not exactly a "plan" for in-house development, but it is quite common, and in such cases resellers or Adobe simply sell the software without additional custom development or software built on top of it. Many companies have built their own in-house solutions, as the technique of automation is straightforward and well-documented.
    Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Best pratices for RMAN backup management for many databases

    Dear all,
    We have many 10g databases (>40) hosted on multiple Windows servers which are backup up using RMAN.
    A year ago, all backup's were implemented through Windows Scheduled Tasks using some batch files.
    We have been busy (re)implementing / migrating such backup in Grid Control.
    I personally prefer to maintain the backup management in Grid Control, but a colleague wants now to go back to the batch files.
    What i am looking for here, are advices in the management of RMAN backup for multiple databases: do you guys use Grid Control or any third-party backup management tool or even got your home-made solution?
    One of the discussion topic is the work involved in case that the central backup location changes.
    Well... any real-life advices on best practices / strategies for RMAN backup management for many databases will be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Thierry

    Hi Thierry,

    Thanks for your reaction.
    So, i understand that Grid Control is for you not used to manage the backups, and as a consequence, you also have no 'direct' overview of the job schedules.
    One of my concern is also to avoid that too many backups are started at the same time to avoid network / storage overload. Such overview is availble in Grid Control's Jobs screen.
    And, based on your strategy, do you recreate a 'one-time' Oracle scheduled job for every backup, or do your scripts create an Oracle job with multiple schedule?
    You're very welcome!
    Well, Grid Control is not an option for us, since each customer is in a separate infrastructure, and with their own licensing. I have no real way (in difference to your situation) to have a centralized point of control, but that on the other hand mean that I don't have to consider network/storage congestion, like you have to.
    The script is run from a "permanent" job within the dba-scheduler, created like this:
    dbms_scheduler.create_job(
            job_name        => 'BACKUP',
            job_type        => 'EXECUTABLE',
            job_action      => '/home/oracle/scripts/rman_backup.sh',
            start_date      => trunc(sysdate)+1+7/48,
            repeat_interval => 'trunc(sysdate)+1+7/48',
            enabled         => true,
            auto_drop       => false,
            comments        => 'execute backup script at 03:30');and then the "master-script", determines which level to use, based on weekday from the OS. The actual job schedule (start date, run interval etc) is set together with the customer IT/IS dept, to avoid congestion on the backup resources.
    I have no overview of the backup status, run times etc, but have made monitoring scripts that will alert me if/when a backup either fails, or runs for too long. This, in addition with scheduled disaster/recovery tests makes me sleep rather well at night.. ;-)
    I realize that there (might be) better ways of doing backup scheduling in your environment, since my requirements are so completely different than yours, but I guess that we all face the same challenges in unifying the environments as much as possible, to minimize the amount of actual work we have to do. :-)
    Good luck!

  • IWork licence for businesses?

    Hi,
    I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask in, but there doesn't seem to any other iWork related forums other than Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
    I was just wondering, what about commercial/business licences for iWork, does such thing exist? Or do we have to purchase X amount of "single user"-licences, since a "family pack"-licence is not allowed for business/commercial use?
    Thanks.

    What may we respond other than what we wrote.
    (a) here you are not asking to Apple's employees but to end users like you.
    (b) the license said nothing about business licenses. The known special licenses are "family ones" and "academic ones".
    (c) before responding I used the search in existing threads for license AND business. Alas, I missed one response.
