License fees for commercial use

Hello everyone,
We are developping a software that uses JDK. I would like to know if there will be any fees to give to SUN when we sell the software or if it's a just a contract. I would appreciate the advise of someone who sold a software using JDK or who has some information about that.
Thanks in advance!

You are free to redistribute the JRE. See sun's pages:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/runtime.html
(The Java 2 Runtime Environment
Notes for Developers)
and
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/j2re1_3_0.license
(The Java 2 Runtime Environment License). The latter is in legalise, but does state that you are free to redistribute it as a complete and unaltered package.

  • Is it FREE for commercial use?

    Dear all,
Has been using Skype for the past few years, and mostly for my personal usage.
Just to clarify something about Skype Licensing, is it FREE for commercial use? For example, I myself and my current/ex colleagues are using Skype for working related purposes, be it just texting or calls or video calls. Do we need to purchase licenses/subscription for commercial use? For your reference, we're from Malaysia.
Appreciate if anyone there care to explain on this matter.
    Regards,
    Edmund

I would start by looking at Oracle information - while we can provide hints and give guidance, Oracle is the only legal source for license information.
My suggestion in general is to use the Oracle site and the Oracle docs, and take a hard copy of that information as backup in case of legal challenges.
That said, the intent for XE is to provide a 'no license fee to put into production' version of Oracle Database Server. It has limited functionality (no Java in DB, limited storage and memory) so it is not generally a worry for Oracle. The supporting references are
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/overview/index.html - which says "It's free to develop, deploy, and distribute; ..." and
"Oracle Database XE is a great starter database for:
Developers working on PHP, Java, .NET, XML, and Open Source applications
DBAs who need a free, starter database for training and deployment
Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and hardware vendors who want a starter database to distribute free of charge
Educational institutions and students who need a free database for their curriculum
as well as http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/license.112/e18068/toc.htm, in which we read
    "License Rights

  • Licensing XML libraries for commercial use...

After reading the license terms for the XML parser for 'C', I am confused. The license document embedded in the download package, says you need to contact Oracle to license the library for commercial use. However, the click-wrap license for the OTN says you can use the technologies in commercial products. These totally contradict each other. I called Oracle and asked the following question, and after talking with 3 people, nobody knew a difinitive answer.
Here is the question: If I use the Oracle XML parser for 'C' library in the construction of a commercial application that I am selling, do I need purchase a license from Oracle to do this? If so, who do I contact?
    Thanks,
    - Ted

It doesn't matter to me as much that the two agreements are different. What I am most concerned with is that BOTH say that I cannot build commercial/for-sale products using the kit without paying for a license. Who do I contact to get a license to use?
I called the number on the agreement and spoke to people who had no idea what I was talking about, nor who I could talk to.
Also, since you asked, I have attached the two different sections from the two license agreements below.
    Thanks,
    - Ted

  • Student License for commercial-use, in Italy

    Hi there!
I would want to buy a student license for Flash Professional CS5, but I have some doubts about it.
Can I use this kind of license for commercial use, like creating websites for works, or selling my games on Steam?
I've read a older topic, and someone said that policy varies depending on the states, so I would like to be sure before buying it.

Hey there Attilio, you should find the answer in the student edition FAQ for your country:

Can you use Creative Cloud "Individuals" license as opposed to "Business" license for commercial use if there is only one employee in the company using the applications?

As far as I know, there are no restrictions on what you DO with the software, bit there are different kinds of Cloud accounts based on how many licenses you wish to buy

  • Can i use free VMWare ESXi for commercial use.?

    Hi,
I know that this question have come up before but I can't find any
definitive answers. Can i use free VMWare ESXi for commercial use. We
    would like to host
several customers on a machine running  VMWare ESXi. I want a clear answer so we can do it without any further discussion.
    Thank you all in advance,
    LNN

If you plan on renting out a VM, then you need to look at the hosting programs - http://www.vmware.com/solutions/hosting/index.html.   The base EULA for ESX and ESXi do not allow for the rental of VMs but I believe it may be possible to get an exemption to that.
    http://communities.vmware.com/message/1016993#1016993
VMware grants you a nonexclusive, non-transferable license, without rights to sublicense, to  install or have installed a single instance of the Software and each Licensed Additional Module on a single Server, unless permitted to have multiple instances on a single Server or to have multiple instances on multiple Servers by the payment of applicable license fees (whether such fees are based on a per Processor, a per Virtual Machine, a per user or any other VMware approved licensing model); (ii) use the Software and each Licensed Additional Module solely for information processing and computing purposes, including the hosting of computer application-based services from a Virtual Machine and provision of such services via an internal or external network, provided such services may not consist of services to a third party that provide primarily computing or processing power (such as utility computing or grid computing) or any computer application-based service that is traded, rented, leased or sold on a Virtual Machine basis; and (iii) use and reproduce the VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client Software or VMware WebAccess (in object code form only) for the purposes of installation and operation on an unlimited number of your own internal computers or terminals solely for the purpose of accessing the Server on which the Software is installed.

  • Are iMovie 10's songs and trailers made using their template available for commercial use?

I am wondering if these are allowed for commercial use. If I have a trailer that was made with iMovie 10's trailer template and contains a song from the iMovie 10 program, can I use this commercially?

I know I've heard some of those Jingles on promos companies play on PBS. I can't tell you the name of the one that comes up. Another time I've heard one on a pharmaceutical advert. But I cannot answer the legal question if you can use the canned jingles for commercial purposes. I don't know if the Apple End User License Agreement for iMovie covers commercial uses of the jingles.

  • Spry 1.6 for commercial use

Hi, Can I use the Spry 1.6 prerelease for commercial use?
    Spry seems like
    The BSD
    license.
    However,
    the adobe labs
    license claims
    quote:
IF THE SOFTWARE IS A PRE-RELEASE VERSION, then,
notwithstanding anything to the contrary included within a license
agreement accompanying the software, you are not permitted to use
or otherwise rely on the software for any commercial or production
    purpose.
Does that means you cannot use Spry 1.6 for commercial use?
If so, can I get the non-prerelease older version (1.5 etc) from
    somewhere?

    Hi,
    That is a little confusing.
We have been distributing Spry under the BSD license, meaning
to allow users to use the files as they please, commercial or
    otherwise.
This is how it has been since the first version.
I can look into the disparity between these licenses but i
think you can feel assured that it is ok to use Spry for commercial
apps. Many people do so already.
The Spry team thinks of 'pre-release' as: "There is a small
chance that we might change functionality, due to bugs or better
implementation" but we are pretty stable now and the core ideas of
    Spry are pretty solid.
    Hope this helps,

  • Music on Sound Track Pro? Can we use this for commercial use?

Does anybody know what the license agreement for the music that comes on the Soundtrack Pro software? It says it's royalty free, but can I use this for commercial use?

Short answer is yes.  Long answer is read the license agreement and call your lawyer with any questions.
A couple of years ago I noticed that there were some loops belonging to APM, and raised the issue with them.  It's licensed to Apple and through Apple to you as an owner of the software.  You can NOT repackage and sell the loops though, only use them in your productions.

  • GOOP Developer free of charge for commercial use

    Hi All
Just to let everyone know that GOOP Developer Full Version 2.2 is now available for commercial use free of charge.
This is being offered as a gift to the LabVIEW Community. I am also willing to release the source code for GOOP Developer under the BSD Open Source License, if enough people are interested. There is some cool stuff in there which I'm happy to share.
Note that GOOP Developer uses scripting to achieve a lot of its wizardry, and now that LabVIEW scripting has been released by NI I can now disclose the scripting code under the hood.
Since GOOP Developer is an executable built with LabVIEW 7.1 I had to perform a few tricks to get the exe to command LabVIEW to do the operations necessary, as you are aware not every property or method that you can run in development mode can be performed by a LabVIEW exe. This is where the concept of agents came in, get your exe to run a vi in the development environment to do the sneaky work.
If any of you script junkies want to take a look at a few tricks, download GOOP Developer and have a look in the Agents folder. The password is "scigoop"
To download GOOP Developer 2.2 simply goto my site
    www.sciware.com.au
BTW, all of my software is now free of charge.

    Hi,
great tool, I'm impressed, thank you very much!
I had some trouble to get it work on LabVIEW 8.0.1 and found the solution
so I'd like to post it here:
If you're using LV 8.0.1 and get a message "Unable to retrieve all VI's in memory",
do the following: Go to the "Agents" subfolder and rename "8.0" to "8.0.1".
    Now it should work perfectly.
I think this could also apply to LabVIEW 8.5.1 so anyone using 8.5.1 could try to rename
    folder "8.5" to "8.5.1".

  • OS X Diagnostic software for commercial use?

Hello! I work as a computer technician, and though we primarily service Windows machines, we get some Macs, and I'm currently one of only two Mac technicians on staff. I use DiskWarrior frequently on my own machines and my family's, but a glance at its license shows that commercial use is forbidden.
Besides the obvious Apple-provided utilities, what are some software programs available with commercial licensing options?
I know of  Micromat TechTool Pro, but far as I know, it's not recommended for Mountain Lion.
I'm specifically looking for disk tools - filesystem checkers, directory rebuilders, integrity checking, surface or bad block scanning kind of programs. Just want to see what's out there, since many programs are not available commercially, and the higher-ups are extremely hesitant to approve freeware utilities.
I don't make the rules, I just follow them...and I fix Macs, but I'm just a bit limited is all.
Thanks in advance for your input or ideas!

I suppose it's within the terms of their license agreement to suggest customers purchase a license for the downloadable version and then simply use their new license key to activate a not-yet-licensed copy in their name. This sounds ridiculous, but despite working for a major electronics retailer, I consistently have to apologize to people for our slow and unreliable corporate-provided internet. Put it this way - we can't run Internet Recovery on a customer's Mac because it times out 100% of the time. So downloading the DVD image for DiskWarrior over and over again is probably not the best approach.
It's perfectly within our "SOP" to use tools the customer already has, provided they're approved to begin with (e.g. use their existing anti-virus software, etc) - but this rarely happens because people tend to come to us because they DON'T have the tools already! An additional $100 charge wouldn't be too attractive, especially if we can't completely guarantee the disk will be recoverable after all. Data recovery services start at over twice that price, though, so it's a thought.
I see DiskWarrior mentioned in every reply. Yes, I know about it. Very, very well. It's right in my first post! It's saved me and several family members in the past. Technically, I DO actually own their hard drives, since I buy all our technology stuff and it ends up registered to me.
I've had nothing but trouble with Drive Genius on ML, though I think I have version 3,12 and that may not be the latest. It crashed all the time when doing defragmentation and volume rebuilds, even bad block scans, and let's be honest, a disk utility/recovery/repair program that crashes unpredictably is unacceptable. But again, that's just on ML.
I'll have to see about TechTool's latest version licensing. Currently, the higher-ups have approved version 5...which is really, really out-dated at this point. We need something to test physical disk integrity on Mac drives, since currently we can only use software provided by the drive manufacturer (e.g. SeaTools) and those don't always have a Mac build.
Thanks for the tips thus far! I'll look into that Onyx program as well!
