License management with virtual machines

Folks:
We are using virtual machines.  If we have a staff change or a corrupted virtual machine, we create a new virtual machine by duplicating an existing hard drive, creating a new virtual machine, and assigning the duplicate hard drive to the new machine.  Works beautifully.
The problem is that Acrobat thinks we have installed it on a new computer and therefore requires relicensing, and it won't re-license automatically because it thinks the license is in use already.
Is there a way around this problem?
Is there a way to convert our retail licenses to some kind of volume license where there is but one license code that can be used X number of times?
Thanks.
Micah

I don't see such an option here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/licensing.html?highlight=volu me.
I don't think you can do that.

  • Lion 10.7.4 issues with Virtual Machines

    Hi,
I'm having lot of issues with virtual machines (both Parallels and VMWare)
since having update to lion 10.7.4.
    I make myself:
If I switch on Mac OS a run any vitrual machine software
I can run Windows XP and Ubuntu at same time with no issue and very fluently.
But, if I switch on Mac OS and start using Eclipse, Safari 5.2 and other production stuff and
want to use vmware or paralles
they become unusable even if I quit all the tasks ans "purge" memory.
(eg: if i click start button on windows I have to wait seconds before the start menu pops up)
    Any Idea?
I have MacBook Pro 13 Unibody mid 2009 with SSD Drive AND 4GB of RAM
and I had no such issues with Lion 10.7.3

No, it wouldn't. 2.5 GB of free RAM could consist of 5 chunks of 500 MB of contiguous RAM, separated by RAM allocated by other processes.
Here is a hypothetical memory map. Assume a is application memory, o is operating system memory, and - is free memory.
    boot:           oooo--------------
    run app1:    ooooaao-----------
    run app2:    ooooaaoaaaaaaoo---quit app1:   oooo---aaaaaaoo---
Maybe there is some issue in the way 10.7.4, in some perticolar situations, handle the process of freeing RAM.
What you can't accept, and I don't know why, is that before the update to 10.7.4 everithing was fine.
I don't know why you don't beleve me.
There is nothing in the 10.7.4 update description that mentions a re-write of the virtual memory system. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5167
I just worte here to see if someone could give any advice to do further invesigations.
I know the price of upgrading RAM but I think that this would be a "microsoft like" solution
and I'm trying to find what service or task or whatever is creating this issue.
The only thing "Microsoft like" about buying more RAM is the fact that you need it to run your Microsoft operating systems. It has been this way as long as I can remember. I upgraded my MacBook to 4 GB RAM in 2008 just so I could run Windows more easily.
Perhaps you have your virtual memory settings too high. Depending on what you are doing in the VM, you may not need the default settings. XP will run low-intensity tasks with a 500 MB VM size. It will run just about anything in 1 GB. Linux should run fine in the same range too.

  • Powerbuilder with Virtual Machine / Build Machine environment

We are in the process of upgrading our from Powerbuilder 10.5 to Powerbuilder 12.5, and upgrading our virtual machines from Windows 2003 to Windows Server 2008.
We work in a virtual machine environment, connecting through Citrix -- multiple virtual developer desktops are set up, and we have one machine that serves as a formal "build" machine.  The build machine uses Powergen to do a formal Powerbuilder build from within a controlled environment.
We have purchased one Powerbuilder 12.6 license per developer.  But I can't figure out how to set up the licensing to let everyone work under the new platform.  The other pieces seem to work fine (including version control licenses that use a license server and Powergen); not sure why Powerbuilder setup seems so complicated.
We have set up a served license model, per instructions.  The server seems to serve up licenses fine, but they never seem to be released.  It seems that one license is taken up for each developer, for each virtual machine.  If there's no way to release it when you're done on a particular VM, we go through the licenses pretty quickly.
Under this scenario, even if a developer ONLY needs to connect into one VM for development, and needs to be able to do a formal build on a different non-developer machine, it seems that I'd have to purchase two licenses (when you multiply this by the # of developers involved, the cost adds up pretty quickly)?  That can't be right, is it?
For our Source control licenses (which, I believe also use Sysam or something similar), it is also based on the # of developers.  When a developer moves from one machine to another (closes the connection to source control), the license is "released", so that the same user can grab it from a different machine.  We can set up the amount of time after which the license can be released.  It's still based on a named user (registered in the server), and is not a floating point license; it just gives the developers some flexibility so that they can get their work done.
How can I set up Powerbuilder 12.6 and/or Sysam to be able to do something similar without having to buy one license per (developer, VM) combination?
    Thanks in advance

Thank you to everyone that responded.
Based on the responses above, I just wanted to follow up with my own thoughts and my plan of action.
First, my current plan of action...
    1) Each developer in our shop will run PB off of a single machine only (either virtual or desktop).
    2) Following Paul Horan's suggestion,
        > What we did at my company was setup a dedicated physical build machine - not
        > a VM, but a physical box using a local unserved license.
we will allocate a single license for a physical box so that each developer, when they need to do a formal build, will walk over to that machine in order to do it.
    Second, my thoughts...
This is still one more license than what I thought I would/should need, and it's really unfortunate that we even have to resort to this, but the alternative is worse -- I can't justify virtualizing our build machine if it means purchasing twice as many Powerbuilder licenses (one for each developer that may need to do a build).
The licensing constraints are impacting the way we do our work, which is not a good thing.  As a long time Powerbuilder developer and manager (since PB 4.0), I find this trend very discouraging.  I understand the concern about unlicensed / pirated products, but I believe there are better ways to handle this (without annoying and driving away existing customers).
Those who know Powerbuilder know of the strengths of the tool/platform.  But I agree with other feedback on this thread that if a company makes it increasingly hard for existing customers to get their work done using their tool, the customers will look for alternate tools from other vendors that don't cripple the development infrastructure as much.
Thanks again to everyone for providing very valuable feedback and advice!  This was very helpful!

  • Remote Desktop Licensing on a virtual machine

I want to move a small business to a hosted solution. If all applications live on a virtual machine then the best way for users to access them would be via remote desktop. Looking through Azure documentation I do see that RDP licenses are not included and
have to be purchased separately, I understand that part. What I cannot find is this:
Can I just configure my VM to be the license server and then purchase and install RDP licenses on it?
Different documentation keeps talking about having to do a separate agreement with SPLA or integrating with existing infrastructure. I do not want to integrate anything, if we make this move then the only server or servers the company uses will be the VM,
on-site PCs will not even logon to AD but strictly do RDP. The entire server and AD infrastructure will only live on Azure and it would be very nice to just install necessary licenses without having to do separate agreements and jumping through hoops.
    Thank you
    Vassili

    Hi Vassili3,
As per my research and experience Subscriber Access Licenses (SALs) to multiple tenants is via the Microsoft Service Provider Licensing Agreement (SPLA) program.
The main prerequisite I see is to Create a basic desktop hosting service deployment in Azure Infrastructure Services. See
Microsoft Azure Desktop Hosting Reference Architecture Guide
    and the
Microsoft Azure Desktop Hosting Deployment Guide.

  • VM Manager on virtual machine - best practice

I am setting up a server using Oracle VM to limit the number of cpus available to a virtual machine which will be running an Oracle database.
I have set up a test environment, one Oracle VM Server, and the Oracle VM Manager running on a separate server.
I have read in this forum that I could create a linux virtual machine on the VM Server, and then install the Oracle VM Manager on that.
    Re: Oracle VM Manager installation
To create the linux virtual machine, I used the Oracle VM Manager that I have running on a separate server.
Once I created the linux virtual machine, I installed Oracle VM Manager on it.
From this point, I hoped to create the virtual machine upon which I will run the Oracle database, but I get the following message:
OVM-2008 The Server Pool Master (10.36.64.225) has been registered with some other pool, and can not register it again.
So if running the Oracle VM Manager on a virtual machine on the Oracle VM Server is a good idea, how do I do it?
    Many thanks.
    Paul

    Hi Tommy,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my query.
Unfortunately, things didn't go so well.
I ran the commands you listed, checking on the status of each VM manager (the original one, running on separate physical linux server, and the one I want to use, running as a VM guest) between each command:
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py master
    - this provided no response, and logout/login from both VM managers showed no changes.
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py srv
    10.36.64.225 removed.
    - the oraVMmanager now listed as powered off in the original VM manager.
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py srvp
    10.36.64.225 removed.
    - no change in VM Managers
    /opt/ovs-agent-latest/db/db_del.py vm
    /OVS/running_pool/28_oraVMmanager removed.
    - no change to both VM Managers and the guest VM is still running.
    /sbin/service ovs-agent restart
    option 2 - guest VM shutdown (28_oraVMmanager)
I couldn't get the guest VM to restart
service xendomains start failed saying there is a lockfile:
    /var/lock/subsys/xendomains
I haven't been able to get past this point other than to re-install and start again.
Maybe there is another way to do this...
If I install the VM Server, can I create a linux VM Guest using command line rather than from the VM Manager?
Once I have a VM guest, I can logon to that, and install the VM Manager.
    Cheers

  • Hyper V Manager can on longer manager all virtual machines

We have this issue have in few client of ours running 2012 or 2012 R2. From time to time those Hyper V base will lose the ability to manage all the virtual machines. There is nothing in Hyper V manager and you can't add itself into the management console.
Restart the hyper V manager service do nothing for it. the only way we can do is get into each each vms to shut them down and do a  restart on the hyper V base OS. Those affected some are clustered some are just stand alone.
    Lin Xiang Correct Solutions

Ive run into this issue on stand alone hyperv hosts and so far, one for one, it affects VMs associated with a virtual switch the management OS is excluded from.  Determine which virtual switch the affected VM or VMs are associated with. Next, in
Virtual Switch Manager, highlight the correct virtual switch, then check to allow the Management OS to share the network adapter.  Click Apply.   The switch will briefly disconnect and reconnect. This appears to reset the switch and make the
vm accessible for management.  After the issue is resolved, if needed, you can uncheck the box again to exclude the Mgmt OS from participating on the nic/virtual switch.  I have not found documentation from MS to support this, but it has worked for
me on many occasions. Hopefully, MS will address this bug at some point.

  • Excel PowerPivot and Slicer with virtual machine?

If you install virtual machine with Windows 7, can you install the full  version of Excel and utilize PowerPivot and Slicer tools?

Ok, I've gone back to checking the "user browser default" settings for the proxy address and port, and it now brings up the NTLM authentication windows asking for my credentials. When I put these in, the applets load perfectly in the browser.
At this point I'd have to assume it is an authentication issue with Java VM 1.4.2 not being able to supply ISA's web proxy with the user's credentials?
I am going to try adding basic authentication to the proxy server as a fallback to the integrated authentication and see if this helps, I'll keep you posted....

  • Daqpad 6507 with virtual machine

I am trying to use the NI DAQPAD 6507 in a Windows XP Professional virtual machine (32 bit). The host OS is Windows 7 64 bit. I can see the DAQPAD but it just doesn't seem to want to talk...at least not properly. Anyone have any experience with this or any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hello Skeptical,
I've made some research about this and I've happens that DAQ devices are not supported in virtualized OSes like Windows XP Mode. This is because the way USB communication is handled on virtualized OSes is typically only optimized for Human Interface Devices or Mass Storage devices and not devices that require much higher performance, such as USB DAQ devices.

  • Read CDs with Virtual Machine with Parallels

I use a programm that runs with Windows and uses CD. Although I could, now -probably since I updated to Montain Lion- I can't open it from Windows, and I've followed every single step in Parallels' Help. The CD is shown in Finder but not in Windows' My PC. It seems as something in Mac (I'm absolutely new with Mac) is avoiding that it can be seen from the Virtual Machine of Parallels. Tks!

  • Strange problem with virtual machines backup (Hyper-V 2012R2)

    Hi
I have a strange problem with backup of virtual machines in one of my Hyper-V environments. Let me describe how does it looks like: There are two physical servers - HP DL360 G8. They are used as hosts for four virtual machines - domain controllers in two domains.
Each of them runs one DC in every domain. I've configured backup "inside" every virtual machine (with Windows Server Backup tool), in its operating system, because domain controllers should have their system state, regularly backuped, etc. Backup
is made on the network share - all machines to the same server as destination. And now the case - two virtual server are backuped as expected - the operation takes 3 - 4 minutes and is always succeded. But in case of two remaining it looks as below:
    - Backup operation starts (is scheduled).
    - Volume shadow copy is made.
    - The first partition of VM starts to be copied. It's Windows 2012 R2 Generation2 VM, so it has EFI, Recovery and C: partition. EFI is as first and at this moment backup stucks for a 2-3 hours! Progress of copying is 0%. After for example 3 hours this partition
is completed and starts the next (disk C:). And again - it freezes for a few hours and suddenly is pushed. As a result the backup is made successfully, but it takes for example 10 hours.
Both "dodgy" VMs are on separated hosts. All four of them were installed in the same time. I tried to change destination to locally connected disk, but no result. It's interesting as well, that after rebooting VM, the first backup is made normally,
but every next has described problem again. In EventLog I can't find any errors, I don't know how to diagnose such case precisely, etc. Have you got idea what can cause such behaviour or where on the server should I look for some hints?
    Thanks
    Marcin

    Hi Marcin,
    >>that after rebooting VM, the first backup is made normally, but every next has described problem again.
    It shouldn't happen .
To narrow this issue down , Please try to backup an Gen1 VM and check the result .
    Best Regards

  • How does Sharepoint 2013 Server farm using BLOB data, Hyper-V with virtual machines storing the BLOB data?

    Hello Community
A Sharepoint 2013 Server farm created on a physical server
stores it's documents in SQL Server according to how SQL Server is setup.
If a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm is using Hyper-V and Virtual machines
how is BLOB data stored ?
        Thank you

  • Connect Cloud Service with Virtual Machine

    Hi,
Recently migrated my Website to one of Virtual Machine ( Windows 2008 R2 ). Migrated all my MySQl, tomccat, memcache and code.. Now if I hit localhost on Virtual Machine I can see website up and running.
But When tried to connect it from outside failed to do so.
Can someone help me to setup cloud service pointing to this virtual machine. Already setup access points etc pointing to this VM

Have you created an endpoint for HTTP? Sounds like that is what is missing...

  • XWin window manager with virtual desktops

So I'm resuming my search for an X11 window manager that provides virtual desktops. I also would like just a little bit of keyboard customization, i.e., assign an F key to raise a window. Keystrokes to move between virtual desktops would be nice.
    Any suggestions?
Blackbox, from Darwinports, seems very nice in a lot of ways, but to get a visual interface to its virtual desktops you have to add bbpager. Darwinports does not have bbpager, and Blackbox needs a newer version of bbpager than the one on fink. Building bbpager from source myself appears to work, but an attempt to run it gives:
dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: lazy pointer not found
    dyld: lazy pointer not found
    Trace/BPT trap
At which point I'm in over my head.
A while back, AfterStep 1.8 did everything I wanted, but nobody maintains it for OS X anymore, as far as I can tell. AfterStep 2 is maintained, but the default style has changed not to my liking, and then and now customizing it is complex.

    Hi Don,
It's good to hear from you, as always! I believe that the lazy symbol binding failure is the result of the use of the wrong version gcc. I think that it happens when you use gcc-3.3 when gcc-4.0.1 is required, although I could have that backwards; it hasn't happened to me yet. I don't know why some apps would require a new version of gcc when most don't.
It appears that Jonathan's suggestions are for virtual desktops for Aqua and not X11. Of course given your taste for virtual desktops, that is likely to be something of interest to you.
As for virtual desktops for X11, they abound. My preference for a window manager that implements virtual desktops is Enlightenment. I like it for other reasons but it has a nice virtual desktop arrangement that "plays well" with Rootless mode. The desktops are arranged in a square. By default, the top two desktops have no background image, while the bottom two do. This allows one to use Enlightenment's elaborate contextual menu, which I like. There are numerous subtle features that make using desktops convenient and I think you'd like it.

            Today I have configured one APP controller 2012 R2, already I have a SCVMM 2012 R2 environment which is managing 10 Standalone Hyper-V Host with 50 VM's.
Question: Is that Possible to Manage the VM's (not part of cloud) in App COntroller, If yes kindly suggest the steps to configure

    Hi all,
I have created one Clod container, by chance can I move the VM's belongs to Hyper-V contained to CLoud container and Manger it thro AC.

  • How do you get the two step security to work with virtual machines running under parallels?

I use Quickbooks running on a virtual PC under Parallels.  I have always have Quickbooks interface with Thunderbird on the PC side to email invoices to customers using my apple email account.
Once I switched to two-step verification security, Apple doesn't recognize the "new" computer trying to access my mail account, but it also doesn't send any kind of code to a second device to authorize the access.
For now, I've had to switch back to the traditional security and the above process immediately works again 9without asking me any security questions).
Is there a way to have Apple recognize the virtual PC (or any other non-Mac computer) with two-step verification security?

You have to go to your Apple ID and generate application specific passwords.
