  • Microsoft releases new license terms for Windows 10

Finally, it's nice to see MS actually writing some nice, readable licensing agreements.
Although I am pretty sure that there will be a move to get the Insiders onto WaaS at some point in the future, but since they have had a free OS for a number of years at that point then I am sure most people will not mind.

  • What are the licensing terms for Creative Cloud Market Assets?

Hi, can anyone enlighten me on the licensing terms for Creative Cloud Market Assets? I have seen this question asked in the forum before, but as yet there's been no answer (or no helpful answer).
For example, although royalty free, does the licence exclude items for resale? For example:
    • Can a CC Market pattern be used on a mug for resale?
    • Can a CC Market pattern be used as an allover print on accessories? ie a children's bag
    Thanks for the help.

  • Please clarify license terms for the PDF test suites

The Adobe Acrobat Engineering team site (http://acroeng.adobe.com/wp/) is a great resource, containing all sorts of test files that are very helpful when developing PDF tools. Unfortunately, that site does not make the license terms of the test suites clear. Would it be possible to clarify the terms underwhich those files have been made available, so that it is clear whether we can re-use them for testing purposes? (e.g. CC-BY or whatever).

We don't have a product - I am one staff member from a number of international 'memory institutions' (national libraries, archives, etc.) that all work together to understand and document digital formats for long-term preservation purposes. As we pool knowledge across organizations, limiting documents to 'internal use' is problematic.
Of course, we can share metadata about your documents, and refer to them by URL, but that gets tricky when we want to talk about details. Can we blog about a specific fragment of one of those documents? Can we include a screen shot? Where is the line? Simple licensing helps make this clear.
Also, frankly, we are playing a very long game and have to plan for the possibility that that website, and even Adobe itself, might not exist one day. This means we are not keen to become dependent upon test suites that cannot be kept safe by being cloned across our organizations.
EDIT: Hm, sorry if that came across as ungrateful. Thanks for offering to provide more examples, and of course, it's great to have these documents available (internal use is better than no use!). I just wanted to make it clear there are other use cases that these conditions can't cover.

  • Workflow for exporting wmv for digital signage?

I am working with 1080i60 HD footage (HDV preset and sequence settings) in Final Cut Pro 6. I need to export sequences to be displayed on a Windows 7 machine running a digital signage system. The digital signage software prefers .wmv format.
I have purchased Flip4Mac WMV Studio Pro HD so I can export my HD footage and have a .wmv format video of comparable quality to feed through the digital signage software. I am baffled by all the settings and combinations -- CBR versus VBR; one pass versus two pass; various sizes and data rates. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, does it make a difference if I export via Quicktime Conversion, or use Compressor?
    Thanks.

Don't think it matters in terms of quality whether you export using quicktime conversion from within fcp or you use compressor, but compressor will allow you to customize and save your settings as a preset and/or a droplet which may make things easier.  Theoretically you will get a more efficient encode using multiple pass variable bit rate encode as the output will be adjusted according to the complexity of the images.  However, theory and practice are 2 different things and the only way to really see what your effect this parameters will have on your output is to do some tests.    More than likely your displays will be progressive, so fooling with deinterlacing either in fcp or in compressor may be a good idea.    Also, bitrate is going to effect how smoothly your wmv's play on the display system.  Be sure and test this on your display system with what ever programs, etc will be running at the same time and hopefully on hardware that will match what will be in position for end use.  You will probably make your clients a little crazy with questions and testing unless of course they've had some unfortunate experiences in the past, in which case they'll be appreciative right from the start.

  • Best practices for exporting for digital signage?

I am exporting video clips to be displayed in a PC-based digital signage system. My video was shot in 1080i60, and I imported and edited the footage using HDV sequence settings. My final export size needs to be 1920 x 1080.
I have tried a couple of export strategies (export using Quicktime conversion) and just haven't been happy with how the video clips look on the PC system -- way too much interlacing. When I realized that the HDV codec is not cross platform, I started taking the additional step of opening and re-saving the .mov file in Quicktime. Now I'm fiddling around with Compressor, just to add more complications. I have tried so many different settings and codecs that I have completely lost my way! Can anyone recommend a workflow for this situation?
I am using FCP6 and Compressor 3 on an iMac OS 10.5.8.
    Thanks for any help.

I still see interlacing on the H.264 export that I don't see when I export the sequence as HDV. Of course, I can't get the HDV export to play on a PC.
I'm trying to read between all of the lines here...I'm going to assume there is a fundamental lack of understanding about what interlacing is and how you're going to remove it. The display either handles interlaced or progressive video files; one or the other. Let's assume it's progressive only. Since you shot interlaced, you must decide how you're going to remove the interlacing; you either throw away one filed or your combine them. If you combine them, you will see combed edges on anything that moves horizontally because every other line of pixels was captured 1/60th of a second later in time. If you throw away one field, you might as well have shot 720.
Where do you want o make this compromise?

  • What are licensing terms for PS in the Photographers LR+PS plan?

I know that with LR I can now, with a perpetual license, use it on two computers, including a Mac and PC.
I also believe that with PS I can only use it on EITHER a PC or Mac with my current perpetual CS 6 license.
What are the terms for PS if I subscribe to the Photographers CC plan? Can I use it on two computers? On both a PC and Mac?

Creative Cloud users can install on 2 computers -- Win/Mac or both.
Perpetual License is platform specific.  Either Win or Mac but not both.

  • Keynote for Digital Signage?

Hmm...? I thought that the new Keynote provided some means of pulling in RSS feeds. Was that a dream? Or perhaps wishful thinking with respect to the Web View feature?
Our goal is to use Keynote to provide Digital Signage support for an education technology conference we host at Arizona State University in the Spring (http://mec.asu.edu). We'd like to provide updates and information and such to attendees. Keynote would be nice, and the ability to pull in dynamic RSS info would be fantastic.
Any ideas on how this might be accomplished?
    Thanks.

I have a plasma screen in our school lobby connected to a MacMini. I wanted to use Keynote to display weather station data kiosk style. One of the Keynote slides would include a web view of the weather station webpage (not exactly RSS, but a related problem that has been discussed widely online). Unfortunately, web views do not update once presentation mode is started. Here's the work around:
    1. Use Automator to create an app that (1) stops current presentation & (2) immediately starts it again
    2. Using CronniX, create a crontab entry that launches the App created above at a given interval
    3. Play the presentation, and walk away.
My attempts at scripting a "stop/start" were unstable, but this has been running smoothly in our lobby for a week. The only drawback is the second-long "blip" followed by the show restarting at first slide, but it's a minimal distraction in this particular environment.

  • License terms for Oracle SQL client

    Hi,
Is Oracle SQL client free of charge ?
if not, what is the license policy for this small application ?
    thanks a lot,
    Al.

What you mean 3 licenses for 8.1.7 ?
I don't think you can only buy 3 named user license for Oracle DB server.
    Oracle client <> SQL*plus
SQLpus is only one of the utilities that included in Oracle client package.
If you have concurrent user license, you can install as many Oracle client you want but any given time only 3 concurrent session can connect to database.
When you download the Oracle client from Oracle website, there's full Term and Agreement you need to accept before proceed.

  • License terms for ROIScan

Is the ROIScan script at http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/68b80aba-130d-4ad4-aa45-832b1ee49602 a sample available under the Microsoft Limited Public License?
I can see a disclaimer for sample code below the script, but there is no clear indication in the description or the header of the script that is is a sample code.

    Hi,
That script is released using the 'TechNet terms of use' license, which you can read by clicking on the title.
I recommend asking this question on the QandA tab of the gallery item rather than here, as that is the fastest way to contact the author:

  • FMS & Flash Player for digital signage

    Hello,
Maybe here I will find the answer.
I would like to use FMS3 together with Flash Player for
displaying advertisement content and/or live stream movies
(copyrighted by my company) in company's points of sales. Of course
I need to buy FMS license.
But is such a usage of Flash Player legal? I mean - should I
obtain any license for Flash Player to display some ads in point of
sales on public displays? Or is Flash Player 100% free for
    commercial use?

Thank, I think the same, but what I actually afraid is that
after sucessfull installations I will have to pay a penalty or
something. For codecs license it's ok. Flash Player itself is a
    problem.

  • Mac Mini for Digital Signage?

I need to bring digital text and video on a vertical large plasma or lcd screen at least 42".
It should be text on top video in the bottom.
Is the Mac Mini output compatible with lets say a Sony PFM42X1/S?
Is the DVI output of the Mac Mini compatible with the DVI-D input of the Sony TV? Will the display be very sharp and clear?
I will turn the TV 90 degrees to a horizontal position? Is there a way the Mac Mini can go along with this??
And last not least, what software would be best to display the text and the video images simultanously?
Lots of questions, but I hope somebody of you has already done this and will be able to tell me if it works well or has any problems.
    Thanks

Yes, I didn't make that clear (first thing in the morning). Even though the JMF Diagnostic applet doesn't work for me on RedHat 9.0 using the Java Plugin with JDK 1.4.2, JMF DOES work for me from the command line. It seems that the Java 1.4.2 Plugin isn't finding JMF on the path. For me, the Java 1.5 Plugin resolves this issue.
