License type of SQL Server 2005 Best Practices Analyzer

Hi everybody.
I need to install in my organization the software "SQL Server 2005 Best Practices Analyzer" but I need to know if this application it's free licensing. I have seen on several web sites about this tool it's free but not in official microsoft
web page. So, where can I find the official microsoft information about the type of licensing of "SQL Server 2005 Best Practices Analyzer" ?
Thanks of your support

Hello Erland.
I followed your advice and I have read the terms of use of this software. I stop at point 3 (which I highlighted). Based on this point, I doubt it is about using this application. Furthermore nowhere says that this software is free to use.
Would appreciate if someone can clarify this to me.

  • SQL Server 2012 Best Practices

We are having a lively debate about how to configure our servers. One application per instance (1 or more databases) or mix applications in one instance. Can you give me some direction as to how to pursue this question? Thanks!

    It depends on the applications.
If the application needs to be in isolated instance, so you have to go for multiple instances.
if the applications need different SQL Server configuration such collation etc. so you need to install separate instances.
If the applications have heavy tempdb usage, so may be you want to have separate tempdb on separate disks, and you need multiple instances.
If the applications have integrated security model with SQL Server ( which inherit from SQL Server security model ), so you need multiple instances.
SQL Server has very strong power to handle multiple databases and we have more that 500 database on one instance, but all of them need same SQL Server configuration ( same collation, memory, cpu, etc ).
If you buy these applications, so you can ask their vendor support team. Otherwise, if you write the applications, you can make this decision.

  • How to attached a sql server 2008 database on sql server 2005

    Hi,
I have a backup of database designed over sql server 2008. I need to attacched this on a machine where sql server 2005 is installed and I am getting the message while attaching the database.
"The database can not be opened because it is version 661.
the server supports version 611 and earlier"

You need to install/have another instance of SQL Server 2008, restore over there the database and perhaps create a SSIS package to move objects and data into SQL Server 2005

  • SQL Server 2005 - CDC problem - real / float type

    Dear Sirs,
I test the functionality of CDC in Business Objects Data Services 4.0 (14.0.1.245).
I am using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
I made all the steps in accordance with the Designer Guide.
I see a table with the changes, I can change the target system using this information  but I have one problem.
I have a problem with the real / float type.
If I make changes in the column real / float (in the table), tha I always see the number -999.000000.
Does anyone know how to deal with thie bug?
    Best regards,
    Michal

Sounds very much like a bug to me. I have seen these things in the past with regular tables whenever we had an issue around regional settings. Can you change your computer locale and SQL server language to english to proof it is that and keep it as a workaround for now?

  • SQL Server 2005 collation type for the Discovery System?

    Greetings,
The SQL Server 2005 Eval 180 day license expired on our Discovery System. I un-installed the Eval copy and installed a licensed SQL Server 2005 EE instance. I searched for the SQL Server collation, and found SAP Note 600027, which recommended Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual Character Set as the collation.
I attached the existing databases using the script provided with the Discovery system. Started up the SAP ERP instance. I then tried to log into the ERP 300 and got a START_CALL_SICK error message. From the error message details I find, "DB CHECK Wrong Server collation. Perform SQL2005 after upgrade steps. Please see note 126973". Note 126973 seemed to refer me to note 799058. However this talks about upgrading....
It appears to me I simply chose the wrong SQL Server 2005 collation type when installing the licensed coipy of SQL Server.
What collation type should be used?
    Thanks,
    Jay Warling

After reviewing what I did, it appears I neglected to detach the databases before un-installing SQL Server 2005 evaluation copy.
I did stop the ERP system via the SAP MMC before un-installing but did not detach the databases.
I believe the collation is actually correct, but I am stumped as how to proceed with the START_CALL_SICK error message.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jay

  • MS SQL Server 2005 data types

    Hi,
I have some code that executes a stored procedure in SQL Server 2005 database from Weblogic 8.1. There is a Spring framework layer in between. I am having problems passing a datetime parameter to the SP (ther server thinks it's a varchar). According to the BEA documentation here http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs100/jdbc_drivers/mssqlserver.html#wp1088746, a datetime parameter should be passed as java.sql.Types.TIMESTAMP. I've tried TIMESTAMP, DATE, TIME, and none of them work. But, that documentation says it's only for SQL Server 2000. What about 2005? Does anyone know?
    Thanks in advance.

We use SQL2005 & WebLogic 8.1, but we use the Microsoft JDBC driver form here
and it all works fine with timestamps. We use this datatype to pass them down java.sql.Timestamp
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C47053EB-3B64-4794-950D-81E1EC91C1BA&displaylang=en
The MS driver has some enhancements specifically for SQL2005 for performance and handling the new data types. We've always been told to use the vendors driver in preference to the BEA supplied one - that came from BEA!

  • SQL server Best Practice Analyzer output in .CSV

Hi Team, I ran SQL server Best practice analyzer on our SQL 2008 R2 server. I was trying to export scan result in .csv format but it is only giving me option to save it in .xml format. I have been looking for ways to export output in such a way
that it can be readable and I can send it to our clients but no luck.
How can I export SQL BPA output in .csv or any other user friendly format?
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi MSRS27,
You can run Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) scans either from Server Manager, by using the BPA GUI, or by using cmdlets in Windows PowerShell. We can view or save BPA results from Windows PowerShell session in different format.
If you want to export BPA results to a comma-separated values (CSV) text file, run the following cmdlet, where Path represents the path and text file name to which you want to save the CSV results.
CSV results can be imported into Microsoft® Excel, or other programs that display data in spreadsheets or grids.
    Get-BPAResultModel ID| Export-CSVPath

  • TYPE casting with SQL Server 2005

    Hi,
I recently migrated to SQL Server 2005 database from Oracle 10g. I used the %TYPE operator in Oracle to cast to the appropriate column data type.

                   i_USERNAME               IN USERS.USERNAME%TYPE,
                   i_PASSWORD               IN USERS.PASSWORD%TYPE,

  • Best SQL Server 2005 books

    Hi,
I am trying to determine a couple of books that will help me understand SQL Server 2005 from a few of perspectives:
Optimizing databases, specifically from SQL 2000 - I have a recommended book Pro SQL Server 2005 Database Design and Optimization
Developing SQL Server 2005 based applications using VIsual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 - I have been unable to narrow down to a specific book here. I learn best by example, so I was hoping for a book that basically goes through implementing a "real world" project from scratch to finish. I am going to be using the full-blown enterprise edition of SQL 2005, not the Express Edition; but a book that uses the Express Edition trumps any other book, I would be open to it. Any suggestions on such a book?
Understanding T-SQL and Stored Procedures from a SQL Server 2005 perspective -- Any suggestions? A book that spells out the differences from SQL 2000 would be an added advantage.

  • Migration from SQL Server 2005 to Oracle 10g

    Dear buddies,
I need to migrate my tables with data from SQL Server 2005 to Oracle 10g. How can I do it in the best possible way?
    Please guide me.
    Nith

    Nith,
I doubt if there is one best practice that can cover all cases of migrating data from sql server to Oracle. l generally find various factors case-by-case that make me chose one approach over the other. Without considering the business case and environment specific factors, some of the things I would like to know would be: The data types of the tables columns, table sizes, number of tables and if this is a one time process or a recurring process.
One of the easiest (some times rather pesky) process would be:
-Dump source data (Sql Server data) into flat files, csv or any preferred format
-Setup a set of staging set of tables in the destination DB (Oracle in your case). You can setup the stage tables to enforce data-types, value sets and even some level of integrity constraints or any data logic or what ever you would like to filter out. Load the flat file data into a set of Oracle stage tables (Sql*Loader would be a good candidate)
-You can always move data from these stage tables to you application tables
You can script this whole process to run as batch or on demand or how ever you would like.
I am sure you can google and find a bunch of proprietary as well as open source tools to do the same with little to a lot of work.
    good luck!
