Licensing on Hyper-v VMs

Hi,
Is this correct? Using Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Hyper-v with GUI we can run 4 "free" any server editions VMs (Windows 2008/2012 R2 Ent/Std).
Using Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v with GUI, how many free VMs (Windows 2012 R2 Ent/Std) we can run?
Thanks

Hi jori5,
"Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise – A customer licensed with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise may run one instance of the server software in the physical operating system environment (POSE) and up to four instances of the server software
in the virtual operating system environment (VOSE).  If the customer is running 4 instances in the VOSE then the instance running in the POSE can only be used to manage the 4 instances of the OS running in the VOSE. "

"Using Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v with GUI, how many free VMs (Windows 2012 R2 Ent/Std) we can run?"
There is no  2012/R2 with Ent edition , please refer to following link:

"Q: What is the difference between Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard edition and Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition?
A: Both Standard and Datacenter editions provide the same set of features; the differentiator is the number of Virtual Operating System Environments (VOSE). A Standard edition license entitles up to two VOSEs on up to two processors (subject to the VOSE
use rights outlined in the Product Use Rights document for Volume Licensing or End User License Agreement for other channels). A Datacenter edition license entitles an unlimited number of VOSEs on up to two processors. "

  • Oracle RAC on 2 Microsoft hyper-v VMs

Is it possible to setup a test Oracle RAC env on 2 Microsoft Hyper-v VMs like you can using VMware?
I have setup a VMWare test Oracle RAC env following http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/OracleDB10gR2RACInstallationOnCentos4UsingVMware.php and was hoping this could also be done with Microsoft Hyper-V.
    Thanks,
    Steve

I would speculate that this certification matrix mainly applies to a situation of installing Oracle RAC on Hyper-V VMs running on separate physical hosts using some sort of "true" shared disk. At this time, I am mainly trying to investigate the possibility of running a "test" low-cost Oracle RAC on a single Hyper-V physical host running 2 Linux VMs. If possible the shared disk wouild just be some sort of pseudo disk setup in Hyper-V shared between the VMs running on the physical hosts. I know this is possible with VMWare. I believe it is also possible with OracleVM (but have not tried OracleVM myself). The place I am currently working is using Hyper-V to run their virtual hosts and I was hoping that the "cheap" Oracle RAC Test environment using VMs could also be implemented with Hyper-V.
    Thanks,

  • Pre-install HYPER-V VMs, then Move to Production Server - Questions

    Hi All,
I am currently taking over IT Admin duties for a new client, and will be downscaling their bloated 20 server environment to a 5 server Hyper-V environment (about 4 VMs per server).  It will be a complicated, and rather time consuming/time sensitive
process, given that as soon as I am handed the Admin passwords, I am expected to transition the entire network to a new DC server VM, a seperate Exchange VM, and seperate DirectAccess VM over a 3 day weekend.
I was thinking about getting started on this early, and was planning on setting up and configuring the DC and Exchange Server VMs on an old spare Dell server I have with my licensed copy of Server Standard 2012 R2 with Hyper V role enabled.  Then,
when it comes time to transition them over the 3 day weekend, it would be a simple matter of copying the HYPER-V Folder (containing Virtual Hard Disks & Virtual Machines folders) from the spare Dell Server to a portable USB drive that will be brought to
client's site.  Then at client's site, I would erase and install Server Standard 2012 R2 Hyper V on one of the client's 20 servers (probably the best of the bunch), and then copy the HYPER-V folder containing the DC & Exchange server from
the portable USB drive to it.  Then I would simply import the DC and Exchange VMs via the Hyper V Manager.
My two questions are as follows:
    1) Just to be sure, given the DC and Exchange VMs are virtualized, it will make no difference to transitioning from an old crappy Dell server to a rather new modern Dell server.  I know performance will be better on the new server, but there will be
no complications with the VM migration (aside from allocating more Cores, Memory, & Virtual NIC)...yes?
    2) The client's Windows Server licenses - client is currently under an Enterprise Subscription license with Microsoft (either Open Value or Open Business - dont know yet). For the time being (before the 3 day transition), can I get away with using a 180
day trial editions of Server Standard 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 to setup and configure the VMs, and then activate the trial editions later using their existing Enterprise Keys?  Or will this not work because of some incompatible reason?
There are over 200 users and 300 email accounts, so I would really prefer to configure all this ahead of time if I can, but dont want to find out last minute or on day of migration that my Enterprise Key wont activate because I used the trial editions and
I have to reinstall/reconfigure all over again.  Is this possible or is there another, better, recommended way?
Ultimately, I would like to get as much done ahead of time, so that then the major issues on migration day will be data migration (files, folders, and email) and the reinstallation of all 100 workstations (via Windows Deployment Services - yeeah baby!!!).
Does this sound possible?  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I see only one problem with your plan: Once you promote Windows Server to be a domain controller, you can't change its license key. That means that you won't be able to go from trial to licensed on that one. Since you're talking about transitioning from
a physical DC to a virtualized DC, what I've done in the past is create a temporary virtualized domain controller with a trial key. Then, you can use all the AD tools to decommission and remove the original and then rebuild it from scratch as a virtual machine
with the proper license key later. That lets you re-use its IP -- and, while riskier, even its name -- if you want, although you need to ensure you do an extra thorough job of cleaning out all the remnants of the original first (AD Sites & Services and
ADSIEdit are your friends). Once you're satisfied with the rebuilt DC, you can decomm the temporary DC at your leisure, or keep it for redundancy if they have sufficient licensing. Pay special attention to relocating DNS and DHCP, etc.
Everything else looks sound. Exchange migrations aren't my forte, though.

  • How do i get win 8.1. *pro* for mac parallels, deauthorizing win 8.1 pro and license rules for windows vms

ok, i've seen this question asked a number of times.  i know the general procedure:
    - first download some installer things to a window box so i can make a bootable DVD / flash drive
    - go the mac and use the DVD / usb stick to install the virtual machine
    great.. BUT :
    1) unfortunately, i'm still really confused at the  most basic part which is where (link) do i actually get the initial download thing to create the 8.1 *PRO* from microsoft and where (link) / how do i pay for the subscription key to install the thing????
i keep seeing a link for windows 8 or windows 8.1 where windows PRO is NEVER mentioned.  i ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE a) PRO 64 bit and NOT vanilla windows and b) it MUST BE A FULL INSTALL (i'm not upgrading from windows 7, 8 or 8.1 NON pro..  i'm going
to be installing this thing on a brand new system.
i'm an IT guy for two decades and i can tell you trying to find, download, install a clean version of windows 8.1 PRO is a royal pita and nothing about windows 8.1 PRO is intuitive on the MS site.  it's almost as if they do NOT want you to install the
thing.   i'm not trying to bust jewels here, i'm just being honest and providing feedback that you folks need to make this much more clear and intuitive.  people really shouldN'T have to post on forums to find out how to purchase, download and enter
in a subscription key for a base version of an OS.  it's crazy.
    2) once i can figure out how to download, install and register the darn thing ;)... i'm curious how the licensing works.
2a) first if my windows 8.1 pro experiment on mac parallels sucks, i want to be able to remove the authorization so i can reinstall 8.1 pro on another system.   can i / how do i do this in my scenario?
2b) i actually already bought windows pro 8.1 about a year ago (to upgrade a laptop that came with 8 that i needed to upgrade to vanilla 8.1 then to finally to pro) so that i could windows phone 8.1 development with simulator on the laptop.  unfortunately
the laptop maxed out at 4G and the performance of the emulator was ridiculously slow that it's unusable.  i'd love to somehow be able to put the laptop back to windows *vanilla* 8.1 and reclaim my 8.1 pro that i *already* purchased by removing the authorization
from that laptop allowing me to reinstall the full 8.1 pro with the same key on the mac with parallels.  then i can sell the laptop that has sat there collecting dust for a year and regain my windows 8.1 pro investment vs having to buy another copy for
    the mac.
i have no idea how to do this though i think it should be possible.  can anybody tell me where / how i do this?
note the win pro 8.1 install never went well so i actually had some guy from MS login to my laptop remotely and do the install.. in doing so i believe he wiped away the original windows vanilla 8.1 recovery partition asus put on the drive meaning i'm not
sure i can get the laptop back to 8.1  or 8 vanilla so i can resell it functionally to another person while removing my 8.1 *pro* license from it.   any suggestions here highly welcome.
2c)  once i get the windows 8.1 pro installed in a vm under parallels, i'll have one licensed copy running.  my guess is that is what i'm limited to.  but when you start working with VMs the whole purpose is to be able to create multiple test
enviornments and dispose of them when you don't need them etc.   since the window will be tied to the single mac hw id, will i be able to install multiple *win* vms (duping an exising win vm for instance) from the one license  or must i purchase
multiple win licenses for each win vm on the SAME system?   if you need a new license for each vm, wouldn't i have to do a FULL WINDOWS INSTALL every time i wanted to create another windows VM.. THAT IS CRAZILY INEFFICIENT...
there has to be some kind of option to dup a windows licensed vm on the SAME system yes?  what are the rules / procedures for making this work.
i'm using parallels on mac as an example but the same question would apply to using hyperV (which i know nothing about at this point) as the virtual host platform as well.
i'm open to well thought out links that actually answer these questions succinctly in addition to comments here
    thanks in advance

  • RDP from internet not working in Hyper-v VMs

    Hello .
Sorry for my english .I hope to explain clearly my problem .
    I 've Hyper-v on Windows 2008 server r2 . I've 3  Virtual networks ( External , Private and internal ) .
In my VMs there are two domains . The first one is bound with internal Vn and the second is bound with private Vn. My Host RRAS  is configured to switch inbound connection RDP (3389) to a second RRAS (Virtual machine bound with private network) . Last
RRAS does port forwarding correctly to the machine for RDP connection ( port 3389) request .
RDP works only from host and VMs but not from internet in private vn.
RDP from internet  connects but when try to configure session disconnects . Any ideas ?
Netstat says  "SYN-RECEIVED" then disconnects .
All other services work fine (http mapped between RRAS host and RRAS vm i)  and RDP works in private virtual network from internet . I think the problem is nat over nat for port 3389 in internet connection .  I've tried to disable firewall but
    not works .
    Thanks

Also add firewall exception "from" any or specific ip "inbound" "to" whichever destination.
To truly test, you ca disable firewall, if it allows rdp session, then you know it is something with firewall.
Remember sometimes antivirus software includes firewall., and in the case of home routers, they have built-in firewall, and Windows also has firewall, so you must be sure to check ALL possible locations of firewall blocking and dropping (even server-to-server).
Basically you would be allowing inbound from your router, NATted through (or routed through) your network, to the destination or allowing inbound from server to server. Also
double check that your server NICs are not having any additional 2nd DHCP interfaces, if so, disable the secondary DHCP NIC and test again. And do:
    traceroute
From Internet to the server having the issue and from server to server and it may uncover more details of where things are getting dropped.
I have heard also some ISPs may also try to block inbound RDP or 3389, so be sure and verify that as well.
Please mark as answer if I helped solve your issue. Thank you.

  • Hyper-V VMs not showing at remote locations

My main headquarters is in Ohio. When I log into our Hyper-V host server, I can open the Hyper-V manager and see all of my virtual machines. The Ohio VLAN range is 192.168.120.***
When I remote desktop into our Georgia or Mexico Hyper-V host servers, I don't any VMs in the Hyper-V manager, but I can remote desktop to the individual VM itself.
Also, the D: on each of my hosts is showing empty, even though that's where the virtual disks are stored.
    Please help!

    Hi Crono7114,
    Agree with others .
In addition , if the remote server installed ABE and the remote user has no permission to access folers in D: , it will dispaly nothing .

  • Using second wireless network for client Hyper-V VMs

    Hello all,
I have a question concerning client Hyper-V on Win8.1 Pro Preview and wirelessly connecting only the VMs. I'm a student at a university and the university wired Ethernet network only allows 2 devices to be registered per student. So for me, those 2 would
be the host OS and my Xbox, which leaves no room for any of my VMs. I need a way to connect my VMs to the wireless network (which has no such limitations) mostly for programming assignments using Linux.
I'm thinking of buying a wireless NIC for my desktop and using that as a second external switch that the VMs will use for connectivity. The host will use the first external switch that currently exists. However, I'm not sure how I can keep the host on the
wired LAN while also installing a wireless NIC only for the VMs. Do I install the NIC, make it an external switch without host access, then join the network? Or do I join the network first then set it up as a virtual switch? Can client versions of Windows
    handle multiple simultaneous NICs?
Also, would the host even need an external switch in this case? I have one since I set up the VMs at home where all machines can use the wired NIC.

Ahh, that's right. check out this post.  This should explain the problem and offer a workable solution.
    Hi,
I remember some articles mentioned Windows Hyper-V does not allow you to bind a wireless network adapter to a virtual machine.
Since the virtual switch in Hyper-V is a “layer-2 switch,” which means that it switches (i.e. determines the route a certain Ethernet packet takes) using the MAC addresses that uniquely identify each (physical and virtual) network adapter card. The MAC address
of the source and destination machines are sent in each Ethernet packet and a layer-2 switch uses this to determine where it should send the incoming packet. An external virtual switch is connected to the external world through the physical NIC. Ethernet packets
from a VM destined for a machine in the external world are sent out through this physical NIC. This means that the physical NIC must be able to carry the traffic from all the VMs connected to this virtual switch, thus implying that the packets flowing through
the physical NIC will contain multiple MAC addresses (one for each VM’s virtual NIC). This is supported on wired physical NICs (by putting the NIC in promiscuous mode), but not supported on wireless NICs since the wireless channel established by the WiFi NIC
and its access point only allows Ethernet packets with the WiFi NIC’s MAC address and nothing else. In other words, Hyper-V couldn’t use WiFi NICs for an external switch if we continued to use the current virtual switch architecture.
To work around this limitation, you can use Microsoft Bridging solution. Create an Internal network, name it “External”, system will create a Virtual Network adapter for it. Create Network Bridge between your WiFi NIC and the Virtual External Network adapter.
Assign External network for your VMs, so they have internet connection.

  • Hyper-V VMs Freezing

The drivers were installed a day after the last failure, which was the first since two weeks, when the Hosts got the newest Windows Updates. So for me, it doesnt seem like the driver is affecting this issue at all.
Both nodes are exactly the same, running with two XEON CPUs and 128GB RAM each. Memory is used for max 50%, CPU nearly gets nearly never over 5%. So the nodes aren't under heavy load.
What I forgot to say: The crashes happens mostly at night, this is also when we run our backups. The last crash was during work time, where we manually started a backup job a few minutes prior.

Since we got our new Servers (HP DL380P Gen8) with Server 2012 R2 in an Hyper-V HA-Cluster, some of our VMs freeze. For Storage we use HPs VSA, and Backups are done with Veeam.
It happens on both of our Hosts, but not at the same time. The freezing affects nearly every time all Windows VMs, but sometimes the Linux VMs are still reachable. Sometimes the whole Hyper-V Host is unreachable and if we try to move the Guests to the other Host, the process simply "failes". After the Host is rebooted everything is normal again. In the logs, we can see the following events for example
    - 1129 from FailoverClustering (Network is partitioned)
    - 1127 from FailoverClustering (Error in ClusterNetworkInterface)A few weeks ago, it happened every night, until we installed Windows Updates on the Hosts. After that it was gone for a few weeks.A few weeks...

  • Using Powershell Studio to control Hyper-v VMs and VHDs

Hello everyone! I'm kind of new to Powershell in general, and to Powershell Studio
    alltogether.
I'm trying to use Powershell Studio to write a script (with a GUI) that behaves like
    this:
Two Windows. On one side there's a window that shows me the list of VMs on my machine.
Once I click on one of them, the window on the right shows me the attached VHDs that VM has.
I can't figure out how to integrate the Get-VM command to display unto a window. I'd
be happy for any help anyone can offer. Cheers and Merry Christmas to all :D

  • Windows 2012R2 Licensing w/ Hyper-V on Server 2008R2

I know we're not "forced" to upgrade and by the time Server 2008R2 stops being supported we'll have well moved on storage-wise by then, i just wasn't sure if the virtual 2 hosts per licence was dependant on Server 2012 being the host OS... And I suppose, if you we were a VMWare shop, they could run 2 virtualised Server 2012R2s per licence too?

squeak wrote:We currently use a MD3000i SAN for storage but Dell doesn't officially support it to run with Server 2012 and up.
Time to get away from SAN!! This is a major issue. The SAN itself is a huge issue, of course, costly and risky and unnecessarily complex. But now that it is horrendously out of date and making you actually consider running an ancient version of HyperV this, right now, is the time to drop the SAN.
Move to local disks and run current HyperV. Don't let the fact that you already own the SAN cloud your judgement. It is tempting to use it to attempt to justify the money spent sometime in the past. But that money is gone, let it go. Look at what makes the most sense for the business today based on what you have today. This is the "sunk cost fallacy" playing out.

  • VMs per Windows Server 2012 Std License?

    Hello All,
Can anybody help me please? I have a question in Windows Server 2012 Std License.
    1. If I have 2 Windows 2012 STD Licenses ( 2 CPUs) howmany VMs ( Windows 2012 Server OS installed) can I have on the same Physical Server?
    2. Can we assign more than 1 license to a host?
    3. If the limit is 4 VMs( 4 Windows server 2012 Std VMs) can we have more/other VMs ( like Linux) in-addition to 4 eligible VMs?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sudhir

In the Hyper-V world, virtual machines are not licensed. Microsoft does not require that you purchase a license for a virtual machine, ever.
Microsoft does require that you purchase a license in order to run a virtual instance of Windows, always. So, if you have 3 virtual instances of Windows Server Standard, then you need to purchase two Windows Server Standard licenses for the host, because
each license allows for up to two virtual instances of Windows Server Standard.
Since Microsoft does not require that you purchase a license for a virtual machine, they will not charge you to run non-Microsoft operating systems inside them. Whether or not you have to pay for a Linux virtual instance is entirely dependent
upon the licensing of that Linux distribution. Any checks you write for them wouldn't be to Microsoft, though.
This means that, yes, you can legally run an unlimited number of Linux guests on Hyper-V without paying additional licensing fees to Microsoft. If you are using Hyper-V Server and have no Windows guests, you won't pay Microsoft anything. If you are using
Windows Server with Hyper-V and have no Windows guests, then you have to pay for a single host license but you won't pay Microsoft anything else.
In the scenario that you presented, the necessary Microsoft licensing for a dual-core host with WS12-Std installed, 3 WS12-Std guests, and any number of Linux guests will be covered by two WS12-Std licenses. You have one leftover WS12-Std instance that
you can legally run on that host.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 & Windows 8.1 VMs performance metrics using WMI query

    Hi,
I used the following query to fetch the Disk utilization for Hyper-V VMs (non v2 hosts) using its host credential "select ReadBytesPersec,WriteBytesPersec,ReadCount,WriteCount from Win32_PerfRawData_StorageStats_HyperVVirtualStorageDevice" but
for the V2 (Windows 8.1 & Windows 2012 R2) this query is not working this is throwing Invalid class using the namespace "root\cimv2".
Please let me know the exact WMI class for the Disk utilization for V2 hosts VMs.

    Hi,
In my lab server 2012R2 , I run this command :
    get-cimclass | Where-Object { $_.cimclassname -like "*hypervvirtualstoragedevice" } | fl cimclassname
    I got two classes :
    Win32_PerfFormattedData_Counters_HyperVVirtualStorageDevice
    Win32_PerfRawData_Counters_HyperVVirtualStorageDevice
    You can try them
    Best Regards
