Licensing - Windows Server Datacenter Edition

Hello,
I have 2hosts on which ESX have been installed.
i have lots of VMs running on the hosts.
Can i still buy Windows Server 2012 Datacenter edition LICENSE and use in my environment?? that is i want to buy datacenter edt and use the product key on any VM that am setting up..
How many licenses should i buy as the two hosts will be in redundant mode, that is a vm can migrate or moved to another host.
an exact reply will be appreciated..

Yes, this is possible. See here fot the technical note. You need 1 windows datacenter license per host. If you have 2 hosts, that means you need 2 licenses.

    Hi Markus,
Thanks for your kind reply. My memory is 4GB but my host OS is winXP so the max. useable memory is only 3.25GB. I'm intalling IDES on virtual machine with Windows server datacenter 2003 64bit as OS and Oracle 10 as db. The memory for virtual machine is set to 2.2GB.

  • Error Code (Windows 2012 server DataCenter Edition) :0xC004F069

When I am trying to activate windows 2012 server datacenter edition, an error message is showing. "the software licensing reported that the product SKU is not found". what is SKU?
    how to solve this problem?

SKU = Stock Keeping Unit (an industry term, meaning the reference number for a unique specific part number or product identity)

    from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303695.aspx
    Error Code: 0xC004F066
Error Message: The Software Licensing Service reported that the product SKU is not found.
    Activation Type: MAK/KMS client
Possible Cause: Volume media has been used with a non-Volume key.
    Troubleshooting Steps:
    - Match the product key to the OS edition.
    - Contact the Product Activation Call Center for assistance.

This suggests that you are using an invalid combination of product key/installation media.
Check that you are using a "matched set", either Retail media with Retail key, or, Volume media with Volume key.

  • Please help me to choose the right Windows Server 2012 edition

    Dear All,
I will plan for new hardware for a University. I plan to have Windows Server 2012 network with upto 10,000 users. I will have Exchange, SharePoint and SQL Server as well.
Please advice on what Windows Edition I should select as well as # of CAL to be purchased.
I am expecting to have a Server of 32GB of RAM, 12TB of hard disk. I will take advantage of HyperV to setup Database server, sharePoint and Exchange

For the CALs, you can read about them there: http://blogs.technet.com/b/volume-licensing/archive/2014/03/10/licensing-how-to-when-do-i-need-a-client-access-license-cal.aspx

  • Licensing Windows Server in a Cluster (Passive Node)

Do I need to purchase a Windows Server license for passive nodes in a Fail-Over cluster? Passive means it is running behind a VIP but no users are accessing the passive node as long as the active node is up and running. Both nodes are
identical (running the same version and edition of Windows server). Please tell me if this differs for version 2008,2003 or even for Ent, Data Center or Standard editions.

    Hello,
I confirm that for Windows Server Software you need to license each instance(Active and passive).
on this link: http://bit.ly/1kxHZEH you can download the Microsoft document for confirmation. you have the following on th edocument:
Clustering, Failing Over, and Moving Instances
Two common scenarios for higher availability and dynamic datacenters involve:
Running the same workload simultaneously on two servers, or
Only run the workload during maintenance.
Running a workload on a primary server and periodically moving it to a second server due to a failure, load balancing, patching, or planned downtime.
In both scenarios, regardless of whether the workloads are running in physical or virtual OSEs, each server must have the appropriate number of licenses assigned to it prior to the workload running
on it. This holds true regardless of whether you plan the workload to:
Always run on a single server.
Run in parallel on the server as a backup when the primary server fails.
Run the workload if the primary server is down.
Load balance when the primary server has high use.

  • RDS invalid licensing Windows Server 2003 Client

I have two Windows Server 2012 Session Host Server and two Windows 2012 Connection Brokers. One Connection Broker configured with remote desktop License. We are Using License type is per device cal.
On Server A, I can access RDP from Windows 7 clients and from Windows XP clients Windows Server 2003 Clients.
On Server B I can only RDP from Windows 7 clients and Windows XP Clients NOT from Windows Server 2003 Clients). The error is"The remote session was disconnected because the remote computer received an invalid licensing message from this computer"

    Hi Gyan,
Which version of client RDP you are using in your environment?
Did you receive any particular Event ID during this issue?
Here for your issue I found something to let u know, if licensing mode on the terminal server is set to Per Device but the license server is configured to issue only Per User CALs, then only temporary Per Device licenses are issued from the available pool of
    licenses. The license cannot upgraded.
Please check the license is properly configured and activated. If not then you can contact MS clearing house or try to change the terminal server licensing mode.
Please refer below link for more information.
The remote session was disconnected because the local computer's client access license could not be upgraded or renewed

You need to verify the terminal server because it can’t able to locate the license server.

  • Enabling remote desktop access to a simple windows 2012 datacenter edition server

    Hi,
I am a complete noob to server administration. I installed a windows 2012 server initially as a workgroup. All i need is to enable a user to remotely access my server(using remote desktop). The firewall that I use is Gibraltar.
I read that to enable remote desktop services my server has to be part of a domain. So i promoted my server to a domain name controller. Using active directoty I added a user to the domain. I also read that to make remote desktop more secure, I have to request
the user to login through a VPN.
Now here is where I am completely lost. Do i really need to move my server to a domain, if the user just wants access to this server and nothing else? Should i restrict remote desktop access only through VPN
and if so, how can i do that? Further, the server dashboard gives me notifications about 'remote desktop licensing' not configured. We got the software as a campus licensing and I am not sure how to configure the remote license server. Any opinions are highly
    appreciated.

If you're just trying to setup this to allow administration access then I don't believe you need it to be a member of a domain. There's a difference between allowing remote desktop access for administration, and setting up full terminal services access for
multiple users. The latter requires a lot more work and licensing unlike the former.
To simply allow admin access, open an explorer window and right click on Computer, then select properties. In the System window that appears, click Remote settings on the left. Now in the bottom half of the window select "Allow remote connections to this
computer" and leave the option requiring NLA in place. Click Select Users..., you'll see that the administrator user already has permissions to connect, so if you're only planning to connect with that then you're finished, otherwise find those users you
    want to grant access.

  • What is the windows server 2013 license version than I need to install workflow manager 1.0

what is the windows server 2013 license version than I need to install workflow manager 1.0?
enterprise or standard? can I install it on datacenter?
please provide me with the reference.
    thanks

Workflow Manager will work with either SharePoint Enterprise or Standard.  It doesn't work well with Foundations since it depends on User Profiles to pass user identity to the workflow.  And yes you can install it on Windows Server datacenter edition.
Here are the supported platforms for installation
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj193487(v=azure.10).aspx
This article talks about integration with SharePoint and states that Foundation is not supported, but it doesn't differentiate between the Server editions, so any edition will do.

    Hi Monika,
which Windows Server 2008 R2 edition is required to install RAC - standard or enterprise (NOT database edition - windows server 2008 edition)?
If we want to implement RAC 11Gr2 Enterprise Edition does the operating system also has to be enterprise edition or is it possible to install RAC 11GR2 Enterprise Edition on Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition? All Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is supported on the following Windows Server 2008 R2 editions:
    Windows Web Server 2008 (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Foundation (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Standard (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (x64)

What Server Version is more suited for RAC Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008, and why?I recommend Windows 2008, because the system is newer and has a lot of features that do not exist in Windows 2003. Oracle 11.2 is certified in Windows 2008.

  • Windows Server 2008r2 Enterprise Licensing

As windows server 2008r2 enterprise edition allow 4 Virtual machines. can i run single windows server 2008r2 enterprise edition license in multiple virtual machines in Hyper-V Enterprise ?
Shall I create ADC,Antivirus, Lotus Domino & Windows File Server on each instance ?
Hi I am not able to extract KB977384-DEU. It asks to password. I need a help to get latest password of it.

For licensing questions you should always ask a trained Microsoft licensing specialist.  You can find them either at your Microsoft reseller or Microsoft itself.
www.microsoft.com/licensing.  Relying on volunteers that respond in a technical forum is not a good source of legal advice.
So, free advice being worth everything you paid for it, the virtualization rights that come with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise license is the right to run up to four virtual operating system instances of Windows Server.  Since it is a Windows
Server license, it can only license Windows Server.  Any other operating system must be licensed according to the vendor's licensing requirements.  The is no limit to the number VMs you can create.  There is no limit to the number of VMs you
can run, up to what the host will support.
As for applications within the VMs, you have to license those according to the vendors' licensing requirements.  The Windows Server license applies to the physical host.  Application software may be licensed completely differently.
As for extracting a KB.  Is that a hot fix that you requested from Microsoft?  Those generally include a password in an associated email message.  Most likely if you request it again, you will get another password for the new download.
And, the passwords have a time limit on them, so if the time limit has passed and you still had the original password, it still would not work.

  • RDP License Windows 2008 R2 activate at Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi,
Is it possible to activate Remote Dekstop License Windows Server 2008 R2 at Windows Server 2012 R2?

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
First please specify, are you talking for RDS CAL or RD License Server?
As suggested by diramoh, if you want to have Server 2008 R2 RDS CAL for Server 2012 R2 then it can’t be possible. You need to have CAL version corresponds the software version it access. Newer version of RDS CAL (say server 2012 R2 can be used for Server 2008
R2). Please check the below matrix for RDS CAL interoperability.
