Licensing with Oracle

I currently run Oracle 8.0.5 on a HPUX 10.20
I am looking into Red Hat Linux Enterprise Edition Optimized for Oracle 8i. Eventhough this is an open source server, what type of support would this list reccomend. The server that I looked at comes with a 3yr warrenty. Do I need to get Oracle support with Linix and what about support for Linix.
Any suggestions are more than welcomed.
Thanks

I can answer part of your question. We have been researching this, and I think the following is accurate. We've check with our sales guys, as well as whatever docs we could find.
1. Oracle database must be licensed for the number of CORES allocated to the VM. You do NOT have to license all cores in the servers. And you have to be careful about the defintion of "cores", too. For example, my new 2-socket server has 6 cores per sockets, but 2 hyperthreads per core. So, my Oracle VM configuration shows 24 "virtual CPUs". But there are 2 virtual CPUs per core, so if you have a 4-CPU VM, that's 4 hyperthreads, which is only TWO cores.
2. From what I can tell, you CANNOT use HA or even live migration with standard database licensing. (This is a marketing ploy to sell RAC, apparently.) Moreover, Your VMs must be "CPU PINNED", meaning that specific virtual CPU numbers are dedicated to the VM. This therefore prevents you from overcommitting CPUs to your resident VMs. I find all of this distasteful, but that's the rule, as best we can tell.
3. It's allowable to shutdown a Oracle database VM, and restart it on another physical server, again assuming the VM is dedicated to specific CPUs, and those CPUs are not being used by other VMs on the machine you want to restart on.

  • How is licensed the Oracle Service Bus? wasnt it part of the SOA Suite?

    Why
it is not clear for us how the oracle service bus is licensed, in terms that we thought it was included on the Oracle SOA Suite , we are referring to newer releases
is it licensed a part from the soa suite?
    Thanks!

    thanks!
so just to put it clear, In case in which we are licencing both weblogic an soa suite the enterprise edition the OSB is included on the licence fee right?
    3.2 Oracle Service Bus
Oracle Service Bus is a lightweight SOA integration platform, or "enterprise service bus". Oracle Service Bus includes Oracle SOA Suite Adapters (see Chapter 5, "Oracle Fusion Middleware Adapters").
Oracle Service Bus is licensed as an option to Oracle WebLogic Suite and is also included in Oracle SOA Suite for Oracle Middleware and Oracle Mobile Suite. Users running Oracle SOA Suite for Oracle Middleware on WebLogic Server Basic may not run Oracle Service Bus (see Section 3.5, "Oracle SOA Suite for Oracle Middleware and Oracle BPEL Process Manager Option Licensing with Oracle Internet Application Server").
Prerequisite: A license to Oracle WebLogic Suite is a prerequisite to license and use Oracle Service Bus.

  • Small Business Server 2003 Compatibility with Oracle 10G, licensing?

    Hello all,
Is Windows SBS 2003 compatible with Oracle 10G, I looked at the compatibility and didn't notice it but I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with the two.

The licensing isn't by cpu slots, it's by the number
of cores times a multipier, which I believe for intel
is .5, so if you have a cpu w/ 2 cores, you would
purchase a 1 cpu license. If you have a quad core
cpu, you would need to purchase a 2 cpu license. I
would definitely talk to your sales rep about this to
make sure the multipier is right (and if it has
changed w/ intel quad technology). Thanks Jim. The multiplier used above for Intel is indeed correct. However, Oracle has (in the last few weeks) introduced the term 'socket' into it's licensing metrics as follows:
"When licensing Oracle programs with Standard Edition One or Standard Edition in the product name, a processor is counted equivalent to an occupied socket. See http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/technology-price-list.pdf "
    To quote another source (CRN):
"..Standard Edition was licensed for servers with up to four single-core processor cores. For multicore chips, users could only license it for up to eight cores total. Oracle's formula was to multiply the number of cores by 0.50 to get the CPU license number to determine price. So a four-core box counted as two CPUs.
Now Standard Edition can be licensed on servers with up to four sockets, or four processors running one-, two- or four-core chips (and possibly a higher number of cores)." This source overlooks to mention that the multiplier relates to Intel!

  • Oracle Options licensed 1:1 with Oracle Ent. Edition 11gR2 or by Instance?

Are Oracle Options licensed 1:1 with Oracle Ent. Edition 11gR2 (e.g. by CPU core multiplier) or by number of database instances on a host? In other words, if I need to purchase two Oracle Enterprise Edition licenses for a single host, do I need to purchase the same number of Oracle Option licenses (again, based on a CPU core multiplier). Or by the number of Oracle database instances installed on that host?
Anyone have a link to an official Oracle options licensing document that spells this out? Found one for 11g but it didn't get down into the weeds, saying if there was any difference between # of licenses required for an Option vs. a license for Oracle Enterprise Edition itself.
    Requested Oracle option licensing reference

They are licensed 1:1 with EE, so 4 EE licenses means 4 Partitioning Option licenses, etc.

  • How can we achive active/active cluster setup with Oracle

    Hi Experts,
How can we achieve active/active database setup with oracle WITHOUT USING RAC.. As far as I know it's impossible (unless I'm wrong)..
We are using Oracle 11.2.0.1 64bit on Windows 2008 server. We deployed Oracle FailSafe but that's more of an active/passive solution based on a windows cluster.
The other solution we were thinking about is to use DataGuard and replication.. two servers.. the oracle instance running on one server generating logs, and the other server receive the logs and apply them to the physical standby db.. Still, this is not a real active/active setup.
So, is it possible to run 2 servers in an active/active cluster and have the oracle database in an active/active setup or have the instance running on multiple nodes (at the same time)?
    Thanks

Let me give you a brief explanation of what the situation is and you can be the judge..
My client have four databases with the smallest one being 20GB and the biggest around the 35gb (SGA 750mb to 1.4gb (Tiny by DB standards) and probably on a normal day, you can run all four of them on a decent desktop).. The DBs are used to keep track of people information. Through out the year, the databases are almost sitting idle, and by idle I mean, the odd update here and there, the odd report..etc. No hard real processing of any sort. Two days of the year (end of year) we have all the operators consolidating records and what's not and they will be pounding away entering data and updating the tables - with hourly reports that goes to 3rd parties. The client expects a 99.99 up time and availability during those 2 days.
Now, tell me, How can I justify using RAC and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing and what ever extra costs introduced by the complexity of the environment for the above scenario knowing that I don't have any real use for RAC for 363 days of the year; and we MIGHT need it for 2 days of the year? This is the dilemma we're facing.
    Thanks

  • Problems using SQL*Loader with Oracle SQL Developer

I have been using TOAD and able to import large (milllions of rows of data) in various file formats into a table in an Oracle database. My company recently decided not to renew any more TOAD licenses and go with Oracle SQL Developer. The Oracle database is on a corporate server and I access the database via Oracle client locally on my machine. Oracle SQL Developer and TOAD are local on my desktop and connected through TNSnames using the Windows XP platform. I have no issues with using SQL*Loader via the import wizard in TOAD to import the data in these large files into an Oracle table and producing a log file. Loading the same files via SQL*Loader in SQL Developer, freezes up my machine and I cannot get it to produce a log file. Please help!

I am using SQL Developer version 3.0.04. Yes, I have tried it with a smaller file with no success. What is odd is that the log file is not even created. What is created is a .bat file a control file and a .sh file but no log file. The steps that I take:
1.Right click on the table I want to import to or go to actions
    2. Import Data
    3. Find file to import
    4. Data Preview - All fields entered according to file
    5. Import Method - SQL Loader utility
    6. Column Definitions - Mapped
    7. Options - Directory of files set
    8. Finish
With the above steps I was not able to import 255 rows of data. No log file was produced so I don't know why it is failing.
    thanks.

  • Is ADFBC - JSF is working with Oracle XE?

    Hi ,
i found in the XE license doc
that Java Server Pages = NO
    what that means?
    Thanks

I'm not sure, but JDeveloper 10g (or really any version of JDeveloper) works fine with Oracle XE as its database.
This comment likely refers to a vestigial feature of Oracle 8i to run JSP pages INSIDE the database.

    Hi,
I found that with Oracle 10g you have to grant all DBA privileges to the repository user. This is not needed in Oracle 9i. Thats why I was getting error.
    Now it works fine.
    Thanks!

  • License Management / Oracle Discoverer

In my last email I described our approach to analyse archives with
Oracle discoverer. In the actual state two questions arise for our
    future work :
    1.     Is there any possibility to integrate the functions of Discoverer
in the own application by mean of an SDK or API.
    2.     Is it possible to secure an Oracle Database with a license key
A question of more general interest is the usage of special characters that
are not supported for usage in the database fields.
    Any hint would be helpful.
    Best regards,
    Eckhard Buesch

Sorry for answering late, but I had some problems with my login to otn.
Here is the specification of my last query :
    1. I'm searching for possibilities to disable the usage of a specific Oracle Database for certain customers. e. g. we want to give him a trial version that exceeds after 30 days.
    2. Regarding characters database records, that are not allowed : Is there a list, which provides DB developers with information about characters, that are not allowed with specific datatypes like "CHAR, VARCHAR, VARCHAR2, . . ."
    Any hint will be helpful,
    Best Regards,

  • Question about Communication with Oracle 7

    Hi,
Generally we use Oracle Snapshots for Communication, but since Oracle 9.2.0.5 do not work with Oracle 7.1.5.2.4. we are thinking about do use Oracle Interconnect for this Link.
Now I have the following two Questions about Communication with Oracle 7:
    1. Is an Adapter for Oracle 7.1.5.2.4 available?
    2. From your experience, does it make sense to install Oracle Interconnect for implementation of only one read only Link with 3 Tables if an OAS for BI is available?
    Thanks,
    Hannes

    1. The Oracle database adapter is for Oracle 8i and up. I checked the code needed in the database and doubt that will work in Oracle 7.
    1. The other option Advanced Queuing also needs 8i and up.
    2. For me it doesnt make sense that you want to connect to Oracle 7. Oracle 7 is unsupported and should not have to be developed against. Also the license costs for Oracle Interconnect ~17K without any discount is a bit steep for read only links to three tables. Having the OAS means you wont have to pay another additional ~17K for the apps server.
