Lid closing options for HP Envy 17

Hello, I have  a very simple question that I shouldn't even have to ask.........but I figure an expert in this forum will be able to answer it fairly quickly.
When I shut the lid to my laptop, I want the laptop to 'do nothing'. I have gone to the Power/Battery Options and checked the settings to 'do nothing' when I shut the lid. For some reason, my laptop still goes to sleep. Is there another setting somewhere that I need to change? Or is the only option when I shut the lid to either sleep or hibernate?
I don't need my laptop to sleep every time I shut the lid, especially if it's only for like 5 minutes.
(Oh......it is a Windows 8, touch screen, if that is relevant to the isssue).
I appreciate any suggestions!
Thank you,
Celeste

Hi Celeste,
Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
If you are running the computer on battery -- and you are leaving it alone for five minutes, you may actually want it to sleep.  It uses far fewer resources to sleep than it does to stay active.  Your system provides for "rapid wake up" and should respond soon after you open the lid when you again need it.
OK -- assuming you cannot wait even a few seconds!  Smiling.
You might have missed a secondary setting that puts the notebook to sleep when it is running on battery.  The notebook might be going to sleep sooner than you would like.
Control Panel > set icon view > Power Options > Change when the computer sleeps >
On Page:  Change settings for the Plan
There are two main adjustments:  On battery and Plugged in
You need to adjust the settings for the Display and for the amount of time the computer waits before it goes to sleep.
You can also adjust the brightness to save battery, that is, you can set the brightness to be a bit "less bright" when running on battery.

  • Lid closing option!

i love my MBP but i hate the comp go to sleeps when you close the lid.
insomiax doesn't do the job perfectly. i really hate using it. i wish apple would just release an update to allow us to just turn of the display the laptop when i close the lid.
insomiax has to completely disable the sleep feature which is stupid. if you close the lid and the screen is still running. you can manual turn off the screen but that's tedious.
i like to be able to quickly close my lid to easily transport my laptop for short distance.

Hi. As mentioned in the article http://www.tekserve.com/service/mac-faq/backingup/directory-damage.php, it's best not to move your Mac while the drive is spinning. By closing the lid and giving the Mac a few seconds to go into Sleep mode can prevent damage to the disk from moving it while the drive is active. While you may be skeptical of the dangers of moving a laptop while it's running, I can guarantee you that doing so will shorten the life-expectancy of the hard drive.
    Best wishes!

  • How to change lid closing setting for Satellite A660

How do I "dock" my laptop? I.e. I wish to use a monitor via HDMI and I need to close the lid to laptop.
How do I do that without automatically turning it off ?
    Thank you.

    Hi
    This is simple
In Win 7 power option you can change this setting.
Go to control panel -> power options
    Here choose Change plan settings
    Select Change advanced power settings
Choose Change settings that are currently unavailable
Choose Lid close which is placed in Power buttons and lid and choose Do nothing then save changes.

  • How to start X200 with lid closed? (for use as HTPC)

I'd like to use my X200 as an HTPC with the lid always closed (and use the TV as the only monitor).
Is there a way to start the X200 with an IR remote control (or some other way)? (so that the X200 can be off or in sleep mode when not being used)
I don't see anything like "wake on IR remote signal" in the BIOS.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I am not sure if this will work, but maybe you could use an IR or RF wireless keyboard (or record the signal from one into a univeral remote) to wake the unit up?

  • Bezel separating? / lid closed mode

I've been operating my MacBook in lid closed mode for a week now. This morning I noticed that the plastic bezel on the left side and at the bottom of the display are starting to display small gaps with the LCD. Is this something I should be concerned with? Thanks.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This is my question too, so to save a new thread I'll chime in here.
When I used an ibook, extensive googling yielded the concensus that the ibook should definitely not be run with the lid closed as the machine is ventilated through (or partly through?) the keyboard. In contrast it was said that lid closed mode was fine for the powerbook which was ventilated through the case somewhere.
As far as I can tell the ibook and macbook have pretty similar cases, including what I assume is a vent at the back. (Actually on the ibook it looks more obviously like a vent, as it has a grill.) I don't have access to a powerbook to compare.
So I guess that still leaves me asking whether it can be confirmed that the macbook is definitely safe running with lid closed (which is how I've been using it). Is the rear vent on the macbook more efficient than on the ibook? Or is the thing on the back of the ibook not actually a vent at all? ???
    Can anyone shed any light?

  • Simulate lid closed mode

Do you know if is possible to use a software utility to simulate the lid closed mode for use with external display?
I would like to use my macbook pro only with external display without close the lid, is possible?
    Thanks

    I have two suggestions:
    - If you close the lid and then wake up the Mac with a USB device like a mouse or a USB flash memory drive or some other USB device, then only the external screen will be active. Once the external screen comes on, you can open the lid and the internal screen will remain off. You have to have the MBP power adapter plugged in for this to work.
    - You can also use a small magnet to simulate a closed lid. Just place the magnet on the right edge of the plam rest over the area that is above the security port on the right side. This will make the MBP think the lid is closed.

  • MBP keeps waking up (for a few seconds) with lid closed and in sleep.

My macbook pro, with the lid closed and hence in sleep, will periodically turn on. As in, ill be laying in bed trying to sleep, ill hear the sound of the fans and hd etc turn on, and then ill see the lcd light up.. itll do this for 4 secs, then go back to sleep. Every 20 mins or so it will do this.
What the hells wrong with it ?

Do you have any USB devices attached? Any Bluetooth devices tethered and nearby? Both of those can wake the MBP... Bluetooth can be set not to wake (System Preferences > Bluetooth), but for USB the only way is to unplug them before you close the lid. If you have Ethernet connected, uncheck the box to wake for ethernet administrator access in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options tab (in Power adapter settings) .
    Hope this helps...

  • Mac book pro is very very slow/it hangs for even the smallest tasks/even with the lid closed it is still running if it is not completely turned off. Dose any one know what may be wrong ? and how to fix it?

More details about the problem : My computer is a Mid 2012 Mac Book pro 2.9GHz i7 processor with 8GB RAM updated to OS X v10.8.5
    - I ran a compleet scan of my computer for any threats ( I used virus barrier express ) and there was nothing identified
    - When I oppened the Activiti Monitor there are about 20-30 processes which I do not undersatand they are run under the user "root" 2 in perticular ( Kernel_task & fseventsd ) they both take up a lot of threads and kernel_task is constantly using 1.2 GB of "real memory" which is at least 20 times any other process that is running espesially the ones that run under the user "Apple" I do not know if this is causing the problems on my mac but i tryed to forces close it and it dose not even let me click the button, the others close but reopean immideatly. I will attach a screen shot of what i have mentioned here.
    - The problems I am facing are mainly performance :- To state a few examples, my mac dose not seam to be able to handile even the smallest tasks like switching tabs on safari, typing any thing, playing a movie withought stopping inbetween, etc.. ( let me elaborate on why I said its not able to handil these tasks, it is because when I am trying to do any one of the afformentioned tasks inbetween the cursor becomes a rainbow collered spinning disk and I am unable to do anything for about 10 seckonds after which it starts to work again for some time before it happens again. )
    - Another concern of mine is that my mac seems to be on even with the lid closed if I do not shut it down compleetly, if i just close the lid after some time the computer starts warming up, and the fan starts running. the battery is drained at the same rate or slightly less rate than it would have if i was using it normally with the lid opean. ( altough this is happning the screen dose not turn on untill the lid is opean again )
    - I have only 300+ GB full out of my 750GB so i believe these are not issues caused by my mac's memory being full ( BUT THE FIRST TIME I NOTICED THIS WAS HAPPNING WAS WHEN MY MEMORY WAS ABOUT 720GB FULL WHEN THESE ISSUES FIRST AROSE I IMMEADITLY DELEATED 400+GB OF MY USELESS FILES THAT I HAD BEEN HORDING ALL OF WHICH WERE MOVIES ) that about covers it all PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANY ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO.
Ps: I apoligize if I have given too many unrelevant details, not enough usefull information and or if i was just all over the place with my explanations but I am really frustrated and was hoping not to miss anyting. Please let me know if any information at all is required and ill do my best to provide it.

  • Upgrade Options for ENVY dv6-7366ez

    Hello.
I bought an ENVY dv6-7366ez notebook and I like to know the upgrade options for it (GPU, CPU, Display, Optical Drive). Here in Hungary I tried to contact with the official Hungarian HP support but they didn't have any information.... They said that the HP HQ don't share any information about it with them, but as i saw that's not true because i see many topics in the forum... Just not for my new/old notebook... So  like to know which CPUs and GPUs are compatible with my notebook and what are the display and optical drive upgrade possibilities.

  • Wake/Sleep issue - Lid closed awake, lid open sleeping, wont wake

MBP/Lion - I'm using my MBP in dual monitor mode with an external monitor and power supply connected. If I close the lid and then disconnect the monitor, my MBP won't wake after opening the lid. I know that with Lion a change was made and the power stays on  with an external monitor attached and the lid closed (with the adapter plugged in), but if you unplug the display, there doesn't seem a way out of this state. Even plugging the monitor back in, the display wont refresh (just black).
In this state the power managment is confused. When closed, the power light is on, with the lid opened the power light goes off, the display remains blank and I can't wake the device. The only solution is to re-boot.
This *****, as I just want to close the lid, unplug power and the monitor and leave work to go home. I end up running the battery down if I don't catch it before putting the MBP in my bag, and I always have to reboot. Anyone else with this problem? Any solutions out there?

I got a fix for you but you have to follow these instructions exactly:
    1. Unplug everything from your Macbook Pro.
    2. Open Terminal.
    3. Type: sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
    4. Enter your password.
    5. Reset your Mac and plug everything back in.
    6. Your computer will now be free of one more lion bug.
If for any reason you want the old functionality back Zap the PRAM (Turn on your Mac and hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys all at the same time)

  • Thinkpad X220: bad wlan connection when docked and lid closed

    Dear forum
I use a Lenovo ThinkPad X220. I have no trouble with the wlan connection when i use the notebook alone. The wlan connection is also stable when i use the notebook plugged in the dockingstation with the lid open. But when I use the notebook plugged in the dockingstation with the lid closed my wlan connection drops regularely to about 2 Mbps and gets very unstable.
The ThinkPad uses the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wlan network controller:
    $ lspci | grep 6205
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)
The network controller uses the iwlwifi driver, that comes with the current linux-firmware package:
    $ pacman -Ss linux-firmware
    core/linux-firmware 20150206.17657c3-1 [Installiert]
    Firmware files for Linux
I didn't change any options of the kernel module, everything runs in default mode:
    $ modinfo -p iwlwifi
swcrypto:using crypto in software (default 0 [hardware]) (int)
11n_disable:disable 11n functionality, bitmap: 1: full, 2: disable agg TX, 4: disable agg RX, 8 enable agg TX (uint)

wd_disable:Disable stuck queue watchdog timer 0=system default, 1=disable (default: 1) (int)
    nvm_file:NVM file name (charp)
    uapsd_disable:disable U-APSD functionality (default: Y) (bool)
    bt_coex_active:enable wifi/bt co-exist (default: enable) (bool)
    led_mode:0=system default, 1=On(RF On)/Off(RF Off), 2=blinking, 3=Off (default: 0) (int)
power_save:enable WiFi power management (default: disable) (bool)
    power_level:default power save level (range from 1 - 5, default: 1) (int)
fw_monitor:firmware monitor - to debug FW (default: false - needs lots of memory) (bool)
At first I thought, the problem could be caused by the KDE power saving settings. I changed the settings, so nothing happens when I close the lid (no hibbernation or screen lock or something like that), but without success (the wlan connection is still unstable under the described circumstances).
Also dmesg shows nothing that points out a problem (as far as I can see):

how about checking both your wired and wireless nic drivers in device manager to make sure that the "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox on the power management tab is deselected.

  • Lid Closed Mode on an 867?

I am surethis has been covered in these forums somewhere, but I must be using the wrong search terms, b/c I can't seem to find a conclusive answer. So here it goes:
Can I run my 12" aluminum 867MHz Powerbook with the lid closed while attached to an external display? Or is that an option only on the newer (newest) PBs? I know iBooks need the keyboard clear to help dissapate heat. Is that an issue with my PB as well?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I've been using my 867 Mhz PowerBook with the lid closed and connected to an external display, keyboard, and mouse ever since I bought it in March, 2003. I've had no heat-related problems at all. However, whenever I have a chance, I prop up the back end of the PowerBook on somethat that will raise the rear of the machine off the table about an inch or so to allow for better air circulation underneath it, where it seems to get the hottest. I didn't do this as a response to any problem, but when I realized how warm the underside of the machine gets, I figured it was a prudent thing to do.

  • Wakes from sleep while lid closed

I got my MBP three weeks ago and I have noticed that when I have the lid closed and it is sleeping and I set it down it begins to make noise and when I open the lid I see that has already come out of sleep mode. I know that the MBP's have a motion sensor that shuts off the hard drives when it senses that the computer is falling or something. When I'm putting it down and it does this, it is always on a hard surface but it's not like I'm dropping the computer down, I'm gently placing it. Any thoughts?

That's cool.. It's good to see they fixed it on the latest revision. The college ordered these right before apple's last upgrade to the MBP. These are the 2.33 GHZ Core 2 Duo machines. The tech did mention that I could take these to the nearest Apple store.. a 2 hour drive, and one of the people at the store could evaluate them and then decide if they should be fixed. No guarantee they would.. and according to him and my description.. "the behaviour is expected.."
While it would be worth popping them into a fedex shipper to know they'd get fixed.. I guess I have to decide if it's worth a two hour drive to maybe get it fixed. The sleep sensor is such a simple and small part.. I'm reasonably confident I can fix it. I'll weigh my options in the next couple of days. Now that I know what's causing it.. I'm not as worried about it as I was. I had envisioned bare wires shorting out in the lid or something.
I will contrast Apple's support with Dell's though. I really despise Dell.. but, when the college has a problem with a machine, they send a part out no questions asked. The college has it's own tech support team and Dell will either send a tech immediately, or send the part to one of our team members. I'd really like to see the college choose more apple products. But, their response to our repair request has hurt that effort. Can you see us with a lab full of macs driving them two hours to an Apple store because of some hardware problem? We don't pay any extra for the Dell support, it's part of the product warranty. Apple could learn a thing or two...
I may stew on this a few days and call tech support again..
