Lid won't stay closed

The lid on my 15" MBP won't stay closed. It's out of warranty, so I'm looking for something other than "take it to the dealer."

Hi artwar24,
It looks like you are running Panther, so you may be out of warranty. If you are and don't have AppleCare, you might try this little procedure I have used successfully for a few years.
Caveat, this is not for the feint of heart, but with your book at eye level, sight from the side as you slowly close it. This should give you an idea as to which direction the clasp needs to be tweaked. The tension that holds the lid in place tends to tweak it out of alignment over time as it opens and closes.
Sometimes on mine, with the lid almost closed, I’ll hold the bottom portion with one palm on the front center and exert side pressure toward the front with the other palm. This may fix it.
Or, before the clasp catches but after it drops, hold it down with a thin object, like a popsicle stick or Q-tip. This will allow you open the lid back up so that you’ll have some working room. Then with thumb and/or forefinger, apply pressure in the direction you feel it needs to go. After a bit, you will get a feel for it.

  • PB G4 Display Won't Stay Closed

The display on my PB G4 won't stay closed. There seems to be something wrong with the latch, as it won't catch (or stay caught) when the display is closed. Any thoughts on how to fix this annoyance?
    Thanks.

Two inches of duct tape or a large rubber band make a pretty effective low-cost fix, but you can also replace the latch assembly — for a hefty price:
    http://pbfixit.com/Guide/33.17.0.html
Note that these instructions apply to the Ti DVI models. you don't say which Tibook you have.
To keep your PB from waking when it opens (it waits until you hit any key), follow these steps:
To set PB so opening the display doesn't wake the computer:
    Applications > Utilities > Terminal
Type or paste the following in the Terminal window:
    sudo pmset lidwake 0
It will ask for your password. Type that in, hit return, and quit the Terminal.
To change it back so the system wakes when you open the lid, type:
    sudo pmset lidwake 1
Thanks to Deegan for the tip.

  • New Pioneer DVR-110 installed, "patchburned", BUT drive won't stay closed.

Have had some good advice on how to intall a new DVD/CD drive, but after installing a New Pioneer DVR-110 (I thought succesfully) on my G4, and downloading Patchburn for Panther, the DVD drive now won't function as the computer keeps ejecting or opening the drive tray.
After installing the drive, I installed Patchburn, and Toast did recognize the drive. I then tried to verify disc permissions on the computer and it kept getting hung up during repair/verify saying it lost connection with the drive manager. Tried Onyx to repair/verify permissions and it too gets hung up. (Had to force quit)
Any advice on how to get the drawer of the DVD drive to stay closed and what else I need to do to get it working?... Alas I can not even reinstall my original OSX software now as I can't boot from the disc drive since it won't stay closed.
    Thanks, Rob

You can verify the closeness by opening the empty drive door with the KB and then hold the door open and close drawer with the KB.

  • Collection folder won't stay closed

I have a Collection set (with nested sub-collections) which won't stay closed. I click the twistie to collapse it, and one second later, it opens again.
Has anyone else seen this behavior, or have any insight into its cause?

Usually caused by a sub-collection (or sub-folder) being 'selected' ... 'select' a different collection/folder, and then it should work

  • CD drawer won't stay closed. MacPro 2010. OS 10.8.2

CD drawer won't stay closed. MacPro 2010. OS 10.8.2
I restarted with the drawer closed (before it opened again) and the drawer did not open after restart. I reopened drawer and again, it will not stay closed.
    Any ideas?

Many thanks for your reply. I don't know what I did last nite. I pushed in the drawer and restarted at least twice. Eventually it stayed in. I put in a CD and burned it using Roxio Toast and all went well.
I have not tried to burn another this AM..

  • Combo drive suddenly won't stay closed, how do I fix this?

    Hello,
today, my combo drive suddenly came open and won't stay closed anymore. If I push the close button it closes, and then just opens again. I have tried repairing my disk and reinstalling OSX, I even tried a different keyboard in case the eject key was sticking. I can't figure out what is wrong. Is the drive bad? Can I get a replacement drive that I can install myself if this is the problem?
    Thanks for you help.

Had the same problem (as have a LOT of others).
Took the following action which (knock on wood) seems to have solved it!
Plug in iPhone; when Sync starts, click on "iPhone" under Devices; click on "Summary" page; under Options at the bottom of the page, uncheck "Sync wiyh this iPhone over ..."; click apply; exit after sync is complete......my problem disappeared!
Note: if the box is already unchecked, try checking it; apply; uncheck; apply
    Good luck!

  • MBP SR display latch won't stay closed

The latch on my new MBP won't stay closed, and the screen won't latch at all or continually pops open. This can be a real pan when the computer is on sleep. Anyone else experience this? Is there an easy fix, short of sending the MBP off for service?
    Thanks.

  • Won't stay closed

My PowerBook has never closed lightly - which I know is not uncommon - but now it won't remain closed without coaxing. Pressing on the lid and it springs open. Other times it pops open on its own. Suggestions?

I had the same problem where the latch simply stopped "catching" when you close the lid. It had NOT been dropped or otherwise damaged, it just stopped catching when closed. My PowerBook was about 2 years old when this started happening, but I had the AppleCare protection plan which covers it for 3 years. I called Apple on the phone and they estimated that it was not covered by warranty and would cost $600+ to fix. I then took it into the Apple retail store and explained my problem and they confirmed that it was NOT due to any damage to the PowerBook caused by me and sent it off for me for a free repair (covered under the AppleCare warranty). It came back 3 days later repaired and free of charge.

  • PowerBook won't stay closed!

My girlfriend's 12" PowerBook G4 will not stay closed. There is nothing wrong with the latch - the latch activates just fine and keeps the lid closed to the unit. However, it doesn't close enough - the screen will remain on and the unit will not go to sleep unless we put something on top of it (like a remote control, etc.).
Does anybody have any suggestions to fix this problem?

Is the Powerbook still covered under AppleCare Warranty? If it is, I would suggest you call them, to have them take care of this issue.
If you have to put a book on top, to make it go to sleep, there is a pretty serious issue, in my opinion. Has it been dropped or damaged?
    Hope it gets fixed soon!

  • Panel bin won't stay closed

    hi all -
I upgraded from 7 to 9 mainly because 7 developed lots of technical flaws.  For right now, I want the good things about 7 to be carried forward into 9.  I haven't delved into what's new in PSE 9.   So I suspect I'll be posting a lot of these rather trivial questions.
At the right side of the Editor screen there is the "panel bin," (containing the efffects, layers, etc.)  In PSE 7 I closed it (by clicking on a little arrow right on the border between the bin and the workspace).  That was my default, and I opened it up when i needed it.
With PSE 9, I've been having to close it each and every time I load the work space, and now the closing is done by Window>panel bin.  So it seems that having an open panel bin is now the default.
What am I missing?  How can I close the panel and have it stay closed until I need it?

    Hi,
    Try this.
With the panel open, click on the three dots at the middle of the line separating the panel from the thumbnails - that should close the panel to the right side. I think it should stay closed until you next click on the three dots to open the panel.
    Good luck
    Brian
oops sorry, that was for the organizer and you wanted the editor
In the Editor, the tab key can be used to close/open the panel.

  • G4's case door won't stay closed - any suggestions, please?

Another question relating to my inherited Gigabit Ethernet G4's ongoing upgrades: I think fixing it so the blasted case door stayed shut w/o having to tape it would be a significant improvement, don't you? O.o
When the computer belonged to my brother-in-law I always figured it was probably a simple problem that he just didn't care enough to fix. When I first opened it up after it was turned over to me I fiddled with all the latch workings I could find to no avail, it stubbornly refused to snap shut and the slightest jar makes the door come crashing open unless it's shudder taped closed.
While working on the upgrades I've been attempting recently, I finally realized the actual cause of the problem - I found the 2 latch hooks that had broken off the top corners of the flexible plastic interior door panel floating around inside the case.
I don't suppose there's any point in attempting to super-glue them back in place, is there? They'd probably snap off again the first time I shut the case door. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can keep the door closed that are at least slightly less of an eyesore than the dreaded "tape solution" and don't scream "hey look, the case door is broken" quite as loudly as even so-called invisible tape does?
    Pretty please?

Thanks, fragmore! Hooray, no more nasty tape!
I was kind of wondering what that little pull tab thing was for - but not enough to, you know, actually look it up in the manual or anything. ;P
The only security concerns I had about the door involved the likelihood of finding my "intrepid-explorer-of-all-boxlike-spaces/any-available-heat-source-seeking" Siamese beastie curled up inside the case if it fell open while I wasn't there, so I don't think a lock will be necessary unless he enlists an accomplice equipped w/ opposable thumbs.
Thanks again for the brilliantly useful info!

  • Directory won't stay closed

I had to re-install Dreamweaver 8 after a hard disk failure.
I used Site Manager/New to re-set up all my sites, and I'm seeing a
very strange behavior I'd not encountered before:
A directory within one of my sites is open whenever I load
the site. If I close the directory and open another directory, that
first directory re-opens. If I close the directory and change sites
then come back, that directory re-opens. Basically, every time I do
anything in Site Manager that blasted directory opens up.
    I'm guessing it's an 8.02 bug, since I hadn't run the 8.02
updater on my last version. Anyone else encountered this behavior?
I didn't see mention of it in the knowledge base, or anywhere else
    online.

  • My Macbook pro won't stay closed, battery drains ...

As you all know the previous generation Macbook Pro latch system is not so good unlike the new models that come with a magnetic latch, is there any way I can add a magnetic latch system to my macbook pro? I know it would be a third party part, does anybody have any idea???

    sig wrote:
What/why is "battery drains" when the MBP doesn't stay shut.
I am surmising that the computer is not off, but asleep; in which case the computer would wake up if the case became ajar.

  • Local folders won't stay closed

I have a curious problem that first emerged in 5.5. I had hoped 6 would resolve it but it hasn't. I have four folders that dance together! If I close folder A then I am taken to folder B which is now open. If I close folder B then folder A or C open. I have re-set up my site, ensuring that the desktop folders were all closed but it has made no difference. My testing and remote servers are not affected.
It's not life threatening but extremely irritating!

I think I have solved it! In preferences I changed "Enable Related Files: Discover Dynamically-Related files" to "Automatically" - I had had it set to "Manually" or maybe it came that way by default.

  • Waterproof charging port won't stay closed

Hi. So I have seen that ports not closing properly seems to be a common fault. Will Sony repair this? Mine has been like this since the day I bought it. However I bought it from.carphone warehouse so cannot return it!! I have had my phone since August 2014 and haven't tried to do anything about it as the shop closed so assumed I wouldn't be able to.
However my husband persuaded me to try on here for advice.

    Help Sony!!
