Life after Apple Care

Well, my Apple Care on my June 2009 MBP is finally due to expire in a few weeks. Is there anything I should take advantage of before it expires, or anything I should know about maintaining my computer later?
I don't have any particular symptoms, except that I still have the original 2GB of memory and so I never upgraded past OS 10.6.8.  This hasn't been a problem for me, as I'm using the laptop less and less as I use the iPad for most routine stuff. So I see no need to upgrade the MBP unless there's a good reason to. Any info on the continuing functionality of Snow Leopard?
If/when I do decide to upgrade, is installing memory oneself recommended for someone who's never opened a laptop before? Is it generally safer to have the experts do it, and should I do it now under Apple Care?

I really hoped that this machine could last longer than 3 years,
Depending upon use, if near daily and moving it around, dusty environments, cat hair, not using external devices like keyboards and mice, then yes, it can go in 3 years.
More like 5 years if used less and in a pristine manner, except Apple puts the screws to the machine with a OS X upgrade that can hobble it or break it.
Can you explain more about why Firefox?
It's a free third party web browser from  Mozilla and it gets updates for OS X 10.6, unlike Apple who has abandoned Safari for 10.6 users.
It's fast, it gets security updates (sometimes in hours) and it's the most customizable and powerful browser.

Firefox is the "people's" browser, packing more add-ons, personas, themes than any other browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/themes/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/complete-themes/?page=7
Don't like ads? Or popups or anything else? There is likely a addon that will take care of it.
I use Firefox because I'm hard of seeing, so I've customized it so I can see everything nice and clear, Safari is very hard on the eyes as it's so tiny and black on gray.

No, sorry. it won't work with the 2007 MBP. You can replace the optical drive yourself - just go shopping at OWC.

  • Computer still Whines after Apple Care

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook makes the whining sound when the processor isn't working on something. I can turn on Bluetooth for temporary relief, but even then the computer will eventually start making the whining sound.
I sent the computer in to AppleCare, and they essentially gutted it and replaced several things. Unfortunately, the sound is still there.
My question is this... has anyone had the whining sound from the MacBook effectively dealt with, or is this something I am going to have to live with?

Hello, sorry to hear that you have an issue.
My old MacBook had some of the symptoms you discribed, but it was only when the backlight would dim. At which point you could hear it whin. Apple replaced the logic board for a completely different reason, and I thought the logic board replacement would solve it, but it didn't, nor did it solve the other issue. At this point in time Apple decided to give me a new machine- after 3 archive and installs, about 2 attempts to repair. Once I got my new one I sucked all the info from the old to the new, and did an erase and install on the old one so no information would still be on it. After I did that left it turned on for light web browsing while my new one was updating to 10.4.8. I then noticed that the whine wasn't there anymore, fluke- maybe, but it might be some kind of screwed up setting in the OSX that you got.

  • After Apple Care (Memory, applications, and more)

Just got my ibook back from the shop; hard drive was bad! I have two problems right now: I can't seem to get the extra RAM recognized by the computer. I think I reinstalled it correctly. The other is that Apple Works is no longer on the computer. I am not in favor of erasing anything since I been downloading all the updates for the past number of hours and for other reasons. Any advice?

Appleworks should be on the software restore disks that came with your computer. You can reinstall it from them. It should be in a separate applications folder. I don't remember the exact name of the folder but it should be there. If not then you can try to extract it from the software restore disk using Pacifist, which can be downloaded from Version Tracker. If that does not work you can do an archive and install so that you don't lose any of your files. This will create a new system folder but leave your home folder and all of your settings and preferences untouched.
    Here is some general information on performing an archive and install that you may find useful;

  • I bought my 15" macbook pro i7 just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quick..at fully charged it says I only have 2:27 of usage time. I didn't pay for that-what can I do about it? I do have Apple care. Thanks.

I bought my 15" macbook pro just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quickly. This started maybe a month or two ago. Its hard to tell. I only noticed the rapid change recently. Fully charged it says I have 2:27 (2 hours and 27 minutes) of usage time...with about 50% screen and keyboard brightness.
I've checked inside system preferences and its cycle count is 261 and full charging cap is 6316.
I have apple care...is this something i can/need to take up with apple. You'd think if you pay the price for these machines you should get mroe use out of them.
ONLY A YEAR I'VE HAD THIS!
My PC lasted 4 years before the battery showed signs this dramatic of wear.
Any help is appreciated, im  new mac owner. thanks.

do you have a mbp with dual video cards? running the system with the higher end card increases the heat and also drains batt power.
i have the 1st gen unibody (2008) with an original removable battery of 311 cycles and 4453 charge. under normal use ill be happy to get 1.5hrs. the mac battery counter thing says i have 3.3hrs though (whatever). compared to me, i think you use your battery more than i do, perhaps its the reason why it degraded so fast in a year?

  • My MacBook Air is not being listed under the My Products tab after adding the Apple Care Protection Plan

I purchased my MacBook Air from US in December 2013, my company paid for it, so it got listed under their account earlier. So I asked them to remove it from there account and then I added it back to my profile in January 2014. Then it was listed under My Products tab in the My Support Profile page. Later I bought Apple Care Protection Plan for this MBA, and registered that plan with my MBA's serial number and soon after that, MBA vanished from My Products. I thought it might take some time for it to get listed back again after adding the protection plan, but it didn't appeared for quite a long time and so now I am opening this support ticket.
Now whenever I try to add my MBA again by clicking Register New Product, I am getting "According to our records, this serial number is registered to another Apple ID. If you have more than one Apple ID, log in to My Support Profile with that Apple ID to see your other registered products. Not sure if you have another Apple ID?" How can I get my MBA back into my profile?

AppleCare does not cover accidental damage, but try taking it to an Apple Store and see what they say!

  • Apple care is useless in India. I bought an iPhone 5 from a Maple store in June 2013.  Also got convinced at the store and purchased an additional Insurance worth Rs 1000 at the same time. The iPhone 5 has a very poor battery life. Needed to be charged at

Apple care has been of absolutely no help to me. My 10 month old iPhone 5 stopped charging one fine day and Apple denies any responsibility for  the same. Between my Family of 4, we Re currently using 5 Apple devices. Am so disappointed with the service from Apple. Although my cell phone is well within the warranty period , I have been denied a replacement. And the Shield Insurance that I purchased is now declining the insurance amount even. They insist I prove that it is an accidental damage. And Apple refuses to cover what they choose to call a 'physical damage'. So where does that leave me ?!

I cannot see the damage. But the screening centre has pics showing it is damaged. Apple refuses to cover a physical damage. But the reason the device is damaged could only be coz it had a poor battery life from start. The iPhone 5 is infamous for the same. We all know it. Apple conveniently denies responsibility.
And the Insurance company says it covers only accidental damage. Now how am I to prove an 'accidental' damage ? Unless I lie to them....

  • What and for how long additional OR separate benefits I receive after buying Apple Care?

I bought a MBA 13" in India (home) last month.
I wanted to know about Apple Care / Extended warranty that is available for sth like ~15K (INR).
Can you please give me a detail as in what do I get with this for my Mac and for how long?
Can I buy this before the day my current/default warranty expires or shall I have to buy this within some stipulated period from the day of purchase of my Mac?
What is already available for my Mac as of now and for how long? Shall anything be added to warranty or care that is available with my Mac as of now? Shall be added right from the day I buy it or it will happen so after my current warranty/care gets used up i.e. after completion or 1 year or for whatever period MBAs comes with care/warranty. So, these extended warranty simply increases the number of years on my protection plan or gives additional cookies?
If I buy an iPhone5 then shall I have to purchase separate apple care for that? Or is it available for all my Apple products? Or if not then are there such plans that I can buy to cover all or many of my apple products and are cheaper as a combined purchase?
Within that period if let's say my Keypad fails screen goes kaput then Apple will either fix it/replace it or it will ask for extra money if it needs replacement? Or will ask for extra money even if it was not accidental damage (my fault)? I read sth about accidental damage with AppleCare purchase - it adds to the first year also or only during the next two years (or next 3 years - not sure how long it holds).
Shall I have to buy it offline or i can buy it online too? What if I buy from another country (online/offline) if it's available for cheap over there?
I see some deals on such packages on eBay - mostly on USA eBay, and have read posts people buying it but they were mostly from USA/EU. Can I buy one of those? Shall they be valid for my product(s)?
By the way, does Apple provide an email support with those plans because I couldn't find one email address for Apple support.

  • Why my apple care for iphone doesn't transfer to my new phone after I claim a new one from apple store ?

2 days ago my iphone fall into a sink full of water. Yesterday I went to apple store and ask for apple care for iphone and they have it. So, I bought it and registered it right away since my iphone still be in a garentee and still not surpass one year usage. Then they told me that my iphone problem considered in a "physical damage case" which they have a policy for claiming a new iphone and pay some fee. After I got my new iphone, they said that all the information and phone data which is registered into apple system about the phone and the user and bla bla bla will transfer to my new iphone. Today, I just check my phone serial number in "support & coverage " column and I found that all the phone data in apple system is already transfered from the old one to the new one EXCEPT the data of apple care that I already registered before I claimed the new phone. Now, the question is " What can I do ? " and " will it be transferd to my new iphone or I have to buy a new apple care for my NEW PHONE That I got from their service "

Placing your iPhone in the toilet was the correct thing to do but you should have purchased an android phone instead. That would have solved these issues. :-)

There is a problem with the activation process between your machine and Apple to verify your machine is allowed to reinstall OS X.
You will have to call AppleCare to resolve this issue. (even if you did't purchase AppleCare you still call their number)

Another method is to take it back to the AppleStore you purchased the machine at.

  • Can I purchase Apple Care after one year of warranty?

I Purchased my iPod over a year ago. There is currently nothing wrong with it, however Ive previously had to send the iPod for repairs.(Center Button Broke)I find apple products have the tendency to break after a year or more of use!! So to keep safe I was wondering whether I can buy Apple Care now? Thanks

    No, per Apple:
    +Important notes+
+The AppleCare Protection Plan can be purchased only while your iPod or Apple TV is still covered under the standard one-year limited warranty.+

  • My iMac has slowed down considerably soon after my Apple Care expired.  Reminds me of the PC days.

What can I do about my iMac slowing down.  Shortly after my Apple Care ran out it started to slow considerably.  Kind of like having a PC again.  On a PC I would defrag it, but Apple tells me it is not recommended for the iMac.  Tired of watching the multi-colored circle spin.  What can be done?  I just upgraded to Lion.  The problem seems a bit worse since.  AND I can no longer get my iMac to back  up with Time Machine.   What gives?

Try using disk utility on your hard drive to repair it, also repair your permissions.  Open activity monitor and take a look at your RAM and CPU usage.  You may have a program or tow taking up a lot of your resources.

  • Anybody have experience of service after guarantee/Apple care expired.

I am plaining to get a MacBook Pro, but what afraid me is that if the Apple care/guarantee has expired, as I have an experience with my iPhone of being refereed to a third party service center. That was not a good experience one, as they didn't do a proper job to my iPhone.

Yes! i have had my screen replaced 3 times, just before the warranty ran out,and i knew that it would happen again, (even has i am typing this out its happening again) I was given no choice but to buy this Apple Care Plan. My question is what happens after 3yrs. In my country England you just keep on paying the insurance every year. If you do not have any insurance, Say, on a washing machine you call the guys out to fix it, they tell you the price before they begin. You are better off buying a new washer, because of the price they charge. I know for definate after 3yrs thats it,and say if you had to get your screen replaced it would cost you £400 plus carriage, and that comes to about £500. You might as well buy a new computer. Unless anybody can come up with a better answer to this i would love to know.

  • Apple care after 1 year

Hello I'm actually abroad. I'm Italian and my parents bought me an apple care in England for my birthday. I will be back in 1 week and it will be like 1 week later from the expiring warranty date. Can I activate it? Do I have problem? What I can do? Is there an extra time after the expiring date?
    Thanks and regards

Apple is not obliged to renew your AppleCare, and to be honest, I highly doubt they will. You can contact them, or look into a third party warranty system such as SquareTrade.
