Life begins at NullPointerExceptions.???

Hey everybody.
Ok this is a bit hard to explain so here goes.
I am creating the game of life, its a crappy little game that runs at command line, anyway i have coded it all and I tested the methods as i went, all was fine until the last two methods i coded then it all went to $#^!.... The area that is the problem is the counting the array elements around the life form(array element) a 1 = Alive and 0 = dead. The first generation of life works fine but when i create a few generations some index elements return null. Ok i will post my code, it comes in two parts.
If you could take the time to have a look and let me know where im going wrong it would be muchly appreaciated. Cheers.

I will post the helper class below.

Could it be that you get an ArrayIndexOutOfBounds Exception?
Maybe you should think again about your method to find the number
of neighbors...

int nb = 0; // number of neighbors
          // fields above
          if (y != 0)

  • OSX TIGER HEADACHES - DID LIFE BEGIN IN 76?

    Hello,
I thought I had better start by mentioning that my first job was actually operating an Apple II Plus back in 82... what a beast.
Things have moved on a little since... anyway to my problems which are with a
    Powerbook G4 1.5ghz 1.25 gig ram running OS X 10.4.11.
    These are just a few....
    1. Spotlight not working with external hard drives attached via firewire, won't re-index even with Spotless.
    2. Very slow system, constant spinning wheel when accessing files, constant finder freezes.
    3. Mouse misbehaving, slow erratic.
    4. TOO Many console errors.
    6. Security system not working well
    7. when looking into activity monitor mds root file using 50- 88% of CPU most of the time!
    8. Bad file creation dates in system (1 April 1976!)
    9. Fan constantly running. processor hot even when no apps are running.
    10. external hard rives behaving erratically.
Basically my machine is not very well, logic board was replaced a few months back.
Diskwarrior is not sorting the problems.
Absolutely any advice, except the usual 'Why don't you reinstall the system' will be most welcome.
So far this is what I have found out...
I have been trawling through various Mac forums and some of the very interesting information has led me to several conclusions.
My first is that Apple are playing games with us all... then I read on... maybe not?
Trying to fix start up errors (very big list) led me to look into the SYSTEM folder, which has a creation date of 1 April 1976??
Now I am not sure this will effect the system, but I am pretty sure it's going to do something bad. I'm running Tiger on another G4 tower which has the correct creation dates.. sometime in 2005, this runs well no problems like these.
Anyway I trawled away and found this...
'A BETTER FINDER TOOL SUITE' they say it can fix creation dates, but I am a worried what this may do....
A Better Finder Attributes 4 for Mac OS X: Features (http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderAttributes/features.html)
I've not yet tinkered with the creation dates of the System as I wanted to ask here if anyone knew of this problem and any advice they can give (please no archive and install again!)
The funny thing about it is that the 1st April 1976 is the date Apple was founded. (Fishy)
    Thanks for reading
    Ian

    Hi Antonio,
    thanks for getting in here.
I suppose I must confess this was a reclaimed logic board, but it came from a very reliable source have no doubt.
I am certain that this is not the problem and it is software related.
Since my original post I have been working very hard to stabilize the machine and have succeeded on most counts.
1.Spotlight repaired and indexed normally at last ('Spotless' came through... eventually)
    2. Fan no longer running constantly as indexing has been stopped on Firewire drives.
    3. Ram was good and purchased from a very reliable company have no doubt, that has been fine for more than 2 years I am sure it's not the issue!
    4. Internet Cleanup was causing many of the security issues and failures, I will be touch with SMITHMICRO, but rarely do they respond...(will post)
    5. when looking in Activity Monitor 'mds root' has now calmed down to no activity and was related only to the Spotlight madness.
My only worry now is the 'Creation Date' in the 'System', but as I mentioned I can correct this for $20 by using - 'A Better Finder Attributes 4'.
I would like to understand where this date is coming from this is OSX not OS9??
If I were to re-install a system that has many mods, I will looses them, plus re-installing from 3 year old disks in a Powerwook with a susspect Superdrive is not an option for me.
    thanks
    Ian

  • Battery losing charge while plugged up to charger

In the past few days, I have had a new problem arise with my Droid Incredible 2.  I have had my phone for about 8 months.  In the past few nights, I have plugged up my phone as I have done for the past 8 months.  The phone typically has about 40-50% charge remaining when I plug the phone in to the wall.  When I plug the phone in, I make sure the battery icon shows it as charging.  (FYI: Typically the battery icon changes to have a lightning bolt inside of it and it fills from right to left over and over again until it reaches a full charge.)  After confirming the phone is charging, I fall asleep.  When I have woken up the past few mornings, my phone has been powered down, and the battery charge indicator light is not on.  I can unplug the charger and plug it back in and the battery indicator light will turn on.  I have to allow the phone to sit for a minute before it will finally power on when I push the power button.  Once the power is on, the battery icon does not show as charging, and I get a message that the battery is too low and I need to run on AC power.  After about an hour of leaving the phone connected to the charger, the battery icon changes to the typical charging icon as described above.  I have pulled up the battery status and history (which is a factory installed phone application).  If you have a Droid Incredible 2, look under Settings > About Phone > Battery > Battery Use.  The battery use screen has a chart that shows the % battery life remaining on the y-axis with time on the x-axis.  It also shows a summary of the main processes running on your phone.  On nights when I have had this problem occur with my phone, the chart has looked like the one in the picture attached.  Notice, the phone shows it was charging at the bottom of the screen, but the battery life remaining in the chart is crashing to 0%.  Where the battery life begins to increase again is when the phone suddenly decided to start charging again.  After showing this chart to a Verizon employee, and telling them my story, the employee went on to say that it looked like it could possibly be the battery.  They performed a battery test. (FYI: A battery test at my local Verizon store consists of powering my phone off, and fully charging the phone then calling a special number that would supposedly pull the battery power down a certain amount after a certain amount of time.)  Unfortunately the battery test showed that the battery was good because it charged normally, and it depleted normally when the phone call was made.  No quantitative measurements were taken to determine if the battery was good or bad.  Even though the Verizon employee agreed that it may be my battery from looking at the chart attached, he said they could not replace my battery under their warranty because their policy did not allow them to replace the battery unless it tested bad in their test.  The employee eventually suggested that I should uninstall some apps (which have been on my phone for a long time) because they might be causing the problem.  Does anyone have any advice on what the problem could be?  Does anyone know who I could contact at Verizon to discuss a policy change?  If a phone has a factory installed application that can monitor battery power, then the phone supplier should be able to use that information to determine if the battery is good or bad.  Otherwise there is no point in having that feature on the phone.  Someone please give me some help!

Lena-It seems this is happening quite a bit.  My phone has been acting the same way for about 2 wks now.  I went to the Verizon store & they were little help.  They suggested I contact Assurian (insurance) about a replacement phone.  I tried a different USB cable & wall charger (sold by verizon) which works intermittently.  I am currently signed onto the Assurian website about to order the replacement phone & pay the shocking $99 deductible...when it looks as though is is a very widespread problem.
I have found other forum entries noting overheating of the battery & I haven't yet looked for anything about my phone not syncing when hooked up to my computer.  There is something clearly wrong with these phones & we should not be responsible for paying a deductible!!
Do you know of what other channels can be taken to resolve this issue? This is beginning to look like a product liability issue...

  • Leopard Freezes on Restart

I'm having a Leopard installation problem I haven't seen discussed, so here goes.
Installation appears to go as it should (taking about an hour).
I get a screen saying installation was successful and a count-down to restart.
    I click restart.
GRAY screen with Apple appears, and the little circular animated icon goes around and around for a minute or so.
    Then freezes.
A two hour wait with a frozen animation produces nothing new.
I've forced a restart with the same result, several times.
Restart while holding down "c" DID get me back to the Leopard install screen, but a second attempted install failed in the same way.
I've seen a suggestion to try "archive and install". I've NOT tried that yet. Will try now and report results.
Since this is not a Blue Screen, I don't think this is the same problem others have had. I do not have Application Enhancer installed on this machine (at least not where other posts have expected it to be.)
If anyone has a fix to this I'd appreciate it. If I find one for myself I'll of course post that here as well.
This is on a MacBook Pro 15 inch, purchased new in August. 2G ram. Plenty of disk space free.
    Sigh.
    Charles

Thanks very much to chat2ian and Nicolas those were helpful responses.
Here is what seems to have solved my problem:
Force a shutdown from the frozen restart screen by holding down the power button.
Power back up while holding down the letter "c" to force boot from the cd/dvd drive.
Chose the option to "archive and install", rather than the default "update".
After a (lengthy) installation, the installer says it is done and ready to restart.
    Click restart.
Hold breath, cross fingers, appeal to appropriate godesses.
After about 30 seconds of gray screen, solid blue screen with cursor appears.
(Think: Great-- progress is a blue screen of death. But wait!)
After a frightening pause, a color wheel appears, and hope returns!
Leopard starts, configuration help runs, and (in my case a least) 5 more packages are ultimately updated, followed by another restart.
This is also a bit of tense drama, but runs about as usual (perhaps a shade slower than Tiger.)
So far, all files and software are present, and life begins to look worth living again.
Nicolas: Sorry I didn't see your reply until after I'd started the "archive and install" run, so didn't get to see if Command-V would show me the same stopping point that you got.
chat2ian: I was within another try of adopting your approach and reverting to Tiger. I started this "simple" update at 9.45 and it is now 20.37.
The irony is I bought the MacBook Pro in August because I wasn't willing to go through another MS upgrade to Vista. I honestly thought this would go smoothly the first time. Silly me.
Thank you both for trying to help.
    Charles

  • Any solution to the MX340's dreaded error 5011?

Has anyone found a solution to error 5011, esp. on the Pixma MX340?

I have done that numerous times for this problem which existed in the unit from the lif beginning, but has become increasingly difficult to clear., until this point when it never clears.  I've been offered a slight discount on a new one, but feel like Canon should do more than that with a known issue in their product design.  Unless  I'm offered a better deal, I'll never purchase another Canon product in my life  after having been a loyal customer since childhood and through college using my Canonet 28 SLR.  Please consider that I depend on this machine for finding a job and am on food stamps and unemployed now for 4 years.  Thanks for answering my request because the last time I called into Canon, I was told to push the stop button 5 times while powered off!

  • Recently had a new battery changed into my iphone, now the battery gauge doesn't work?

Any advice? It's been 4 days, I am currently traveling in Russia and cannot call the toll free Apple Support number from here.

I read online that I should reboot the iphone 2-3 times as it may be a glitch. What's happening is when I charge the phone the battery percentage stays the same, once I unplug charger and reboot phone battery shows 100%
The same is the case as the battery life begins to diminish I have to reboot to see what true battery life is.. I have airplane mode on at the moment due to my travels..

I assume that you don't have the installation discs, so:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold command + s key down after you hear the chime.
    3. When you get a text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    (Type these commands very carefully)
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    4. You will go through the setup process again, create a new admin account, login to it and then change your existing account password or whatever else you need to do. You can delete the account you made in this process, or not.

  • IPhone 5 hotter than Venus and dreadful battery life after beginning to use photo streams?

You may be able to tell from the title i have an issue.
Set up the photo stream today after my bro in law shared pictures. Phone immediately heated up to ridiculous levels and my battery life has been dreadful.
I've had the phone since start of June and had good battery life and no issues with heat, done the ios7 update last week (with no problems) so I reckon the issue is with the photo stream feature but I'm no tech wizard.
I've done a few searches for an answer but not found anything.
    Any help would be great
    Cheers
    Stevie

i am having same problem lately with my Iphone 5 and IOS7. I see my phone gets very hot when using the camera (or the gps apps). but even when I turn the camera off as well as GPS, the drainage is growing and when it gets to 24% it shuts down !!!! dead, I connected to the usb cable and it started but showed 0%.... very frustrating indeed !!!! would I be experiencing same issues with the new 5S I ordered already ??
I see your comment about the "photo stream" - it sounds potential problem - I wonder if any other colleagues will bring this up as well ?!
I turned off the Photo Sharing - will see if it's better, I did not want to turn off the Photo Stream becasue I did npt want to lose all my stored photos in te Icloud.
is there something wrong with the camera ??

  • Console does not comes back to life after screen blanking

    edited post on 2014-07-13:
This problem has nothing to do with suspend-to-RAM and/or suspend-to-disk (hibernate).
It is a screen blanking on the console triggered by a timeout in the kernel.
It can be modified (or disabled) with the setterm command for the current session.
The issue is still unresolved since the console doesn't comes back to life after hitting a key.
See post#6 on 2014-07-13 for further details.
    Changed title accordingly.
original post on 2014-07-09 titled "blank screen on resume after suspend but screen OK after hibernation" follows:
Dell Inspiron 9400 (aka E1705) with Radeon X1400 (RV515) (confirmed by dmesg: loading R500 microcode)
    - arch x86_64 fully updated up to 07-JULY-2014
    - xf86-video-ati open source driver installed
    - no (additional; ie: explicitly) installed power management packages such as pm-utils
    - no X installed
    The problem:
    • hibernation works fine; ie: by closing (and waiting a few seconds) and re-opening the lid
    • however resume after suspend isn't working; ie: by pressing any key to resume ... it seems the screen never comes back to life
After suspend activates (and after I hit a key to activate resume) I see no activity at all (blank screen) but ... if I type some commands (eg: timedatectl etc) and then I close the lid to activate the hibernation sequence re-opening the lid (say, a minute later) the machine comes back from hibernation as expected and I can see the commands (and output) I typed when the screen was blank so ... it seems to me either:
    • the backlight state is not restored on the resume sequence (first thought)
    • the machine shuts down the screen after (a 10 minute) timeout but never activates the suspend sequence (and will never activate resume then) (second thought while reading dmesg output)
This problem was present on this laptop since my first (and subsequent) arch installations so it seems is not kernel/driver specific since I did many pacman --sysupgrades in between while learning arch.
The testing sequence (with related entries on included dmesg output):
    - typed timedatectl ... showing 23.29.04
    - now allowing idle time for the machine to suspend
    - suspend starts at 23.39 (ie: after 10 minutes) ... tag it as event1#1
    - after 30 seconds resuming with the space key and after a few seconds typing (blindly) timedatectl ... tag it as event1#2
    - after 60 seconds closing the lid allowing time for hibernation ... tag it as event2#1
    - after 30 seconds opening the lid ... tag it as event2#2
    - now I can see the output for timedatectl (typed blindly on event1#2) and it shows 23.40.11
As you can see in attached dmesg output (at the bottom of this post) there are (to me) no evident entries for event1#2 (resuming after suspend):
    ... event#1-1 ... suspend starts here:
    [Mon Jul 7 23:40:12 2014] perf interrupt took too long (2504 > 2495), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50100
... event#1-2 ... resume from suspend should show some entries here:
    no entries at all
And the next entry after entering the suspend sequence is the starting of the hibernation sequence (when closing the lid):
    ... event#2-1 ... hibernation starts here:
[Mon Jul 7 23:41:30 2014] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
[Mon Jul 7 23:41:30 2014] smpboot: CPU 1 is now offline
... event#2-2 ... coming back from hibernation (I think) starts here:
    [Mon Jul 7 23:41:30 2014] ACPI: Low-level resume complete
    [Mon Jul 7 23:41:31 2014] Restarting tasks ... done.
[Mon Jul 7 23:41:31 2014] video LNXVIDEO:00: Restoring backlight state
So the machine shuts off the screen (and/or backlight) but never enters suspend mode because "restoring backlight state" appears once and should appear twice in my testing.
    Why isn't working then ?
Because the signal to enter suspend mode is never sent/received by the OS ?
Which brings me to a key question: is the acpi package (which it is not installed) (or something like that) required for such signaling ?
In the following post a user claims a similar problem but he can see some activity (after resuming from suspend) by directing a bright light to the screen so the problem there seems to be the backlight not powered up again: it is not my case, when I did the same I saw no activity at all.

I think that it is something wrong with kernel and graphic drivers but i'm not able to solve it from the beginning of using of Arch by me.
I'm not so sure this issue is software-related only because in my case it seems the laptop screen enters power-saving mode (10-min timeout) on its own without any events logged (as shown by dmesg) so my next thought was OK, I'm going to get rid of this issue disabling the screen power-saving timeout in the BIOS and set it to never power down or something like that and from then on managing power mode manually; ie: when I want to power down I will just use systemctl suspend/hibernate which work fine ... problem is: there are no related options in my BIOS for such timeout.
The only timeouts I have are in /etc/systemd/logind.conf set to 30min (#IdleActionSec) (commented) by default so these are not in effect because the screens goes blank after 10m which is less than the (default) 30m in logind. Maybe setting loggind to 9m (un-commented) to catch the event before the machine-default one ?
    IdleActionSec=9min
    IdleAction=suspend
Will check it and report back.

  • Worst ever Customer support in my life

    Hello Team,
My Name is Anish Mathew and you can reach at my number xxxxxxxxxxx).I would like to report one of the worst customer support I have ever experienced in my life. I am not sure which email address I should be sending this,so marked on all addresses I got from the internet. Please forward this to the right people as I didn't find any escalation point.
The story begins around last week of June 2013 when my laptop(Lenovo thinkpad edge xxxxxxxxx doesn't detect my battery. Since it was out of warranty I went ahead and bought a new Lenovo genuine battery thinking that my battery is corrupt. But the laptop didn't detect the new battery. As a next step I reached out at one of your Authorized service center in Bangalore below.
    Caddons Computer Services
    No.3350, KR Road,
    BSK II stage,Bengaluru-560070
    Tel-26762986/87/88
As per the call with the technician I took my laptop to the service center. The initial response itself was pathetic. The problems seems like the chip that is supposed to detect the battery is no longer working. As per Lenovo we cant replace the chip instead we need to replace the Mother board which would cost me 14k. Rahul told me that he will extend the warranty and get the mother board replaced under warranty which would cost me 8k. We agreed this and gave the laptop on 29th June 2013.Attached is the service report copy with the dates for your reference.
Guys Today is 21st Feb 2014 and you know what still nothing has happened. Wont you get frustrated?. Since today I would have made like 100 calls atleast 1 in a week. Every time I call they would say " we will get back to you sir" and thats it. Today when I called Rahul he says Sir be patient it seems. Are you joking?. I have been showing patience for the last 8 months and in a couple of months we will celebrate 1 year(Anniversary). What would you expect me to do at this point?.I will never ever recommend a Lenovo product to a anybody that I know. Please close such pathetic service centers which frustrates your customers. I need an answer ASAP or planning to go to consumer court for Justice. I still expect positive outcome.

Your complaint is with the computer store that you took the computer to.  Go back to the store in person and get your computer back.  They've had it long enough for you to know they are never going to fix it.  Then call the Lenovo customer service number on this website (for India) and work with them.
This is a user forum, not a Lenovo customer service forum.  By all means take the computer store to court (if the Indian court system is anything like the US system, you are wasting your time), but they are not lenovo..

  • 2013 Macbook Air 13" battery life not as good as advertised

At full charge, the estimated battery life read a little over 17 hours. At 97%, it now reads 15:39. Like I get this is vastly better than the older Macbook Air, but it still falls quite short of the 24 hours advertised on the website. Currently, it is still at 97% but now the estimated battery running time reads 14:59. Is this normal? I accidentally drained my battery twice since I bought it at the beginning of August, and I understand that's not good for the newer batteries - could this be the reason? My screen brightness is at 50% and I have no movies or music playing. Safari is the only ap I have open.
I'd appreciate any ideas or help with this problem (that is, if it is one).
I just looked at the estimated time again, and while it is still at 97%, the estimated remaining time is at 13:48. It's taken me a little over a minute to type this.
I'm not very tech-savy - is there something wrong with the way I understood the advertised battery life?

The Air is nowhere advertised for 24 hrs. batt. life.........  in any configuration.

  • Mid-2013 Macbook Air: question about the battery life

First of all, I'm sorry if these questions have been already asked, I've looked around and I've seen some answers, but none that fit my specific case.
I have had this computer since December (Macbook Air, 13'', Mid-2013), I've been using it for a month now. At the beginning, I used to use it until my battery was low (between 10 and 20%) and then charge it. Then I learnt that it's better to keep it plugged as much as possible (I have read this in other discussions and on the Apple page). The problem is that my battery is no longer a 100% of its capacity according to Cococnut Battery. It started with 99%, then back to 100%, then 98, 97... and now it varies from 97 to 98 (right now it says that my computer's current capacity is 6948 mAH). I don't know if this is normal, or if this is caused by the use I used to give to my macbook air at the beginning or by any other thing. I also have 19 loadcycles already. Besides, I have noticed that sometimes it jumps form 100% to 99% of battery pretty fast when I don't have it plugged, and I'm not sure if that happened before.
This is my first time dealing with a macbook and I don't know how these things are supposed to work, and I'm worried my battery might have any kind of problem and that's why itdoesn't have full capacity anymore, since I've been using it for only a month.
Also, sometimes it takes a little while to shut down. It usually takes 2 seconds, but sometimes it takes longer, maybe 20 seconds (first the screen turn white, then the loading icon appears and then it finally shuts down). Is this normal too for macbook airs?
    Thanks for the help!

Those are only averages, for purposes of the battery 97 98 99 and 100 are the 'same thing'........theyre all estimates.
Normal on shut down, sometimes you can see a few seconds, sometimes 10, 15 seconds shut down.....depends on what and HOW much its shutting down before poweroff.   Normal.
    ON BATTERY USE:
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW  & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.    As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
*However if you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode       (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above:   “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”.
This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace

  • Satellite A215-S4757 - Battery life and cooling fan issue

    Hello everybody,
I would like to ask a few questions abou my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?
I have my laptop since august last year and I think it shouldn't be a problem of dust, because it is too "young" for that and I don't live in a "dusty" appartment...
Anyway, I think the "almost allways running fan" problem appeared about 2 months after I purchased the notebook. I have installed "Speedfan" and I see "HD0" temperature is increasing from about 30deg immediately after I start the laptop, to about 39deg after 1 hour.
But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behaviour normal???
Is the core temperature of 45-50deg normal? I am just using my laptop for Internet browsing, e-mails, etc., no complex 3d games!
The second thing is that the battery life is (and was from the beginning) not spectacular: it lasts max. 1,5 hours with wireless on, but normal use of laptop (not playing dvd's or something like this). Is this normal? If yes, is it because of the amd turion 64x2 processors?
Please help me with some advices / opinions.
P.S. I've bought my Toshiba as I was on trip in USA (NY).
Thank you very much in advance.
    Conrad

    > I would like to ask a few questions about my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?
Im an owner of a Satellite A210. Its similar to the A215. The A210 is a European model and the A215 belongs to the US notebook series.
I have noticed the same on my A210 and I think its normal behavior.
    > But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behavior normal???
The CPU temperature of 40-60deg is nothing unusual.
The temperature could arise up to 70-80degrees while playing a game. So dont worry about the temperature.
The cooling modules are controlled by BIOS. The fan table is stored in the BIOS and it contains informations about temperature limits and the cooling usage.
If a certain temperature level was reached the cooling module starts to rotate with a certain speed.
Now I would like to say something about the notebooks battery life time
Generally the battery life time depends on the notebooks usage.
While playing games or watching movies the battery would discharge much faster.
Anyway, your notebook was equipped with high-performance devices and as far as I know the Vista was preinstalled on this series. Both factors (high performance devices CPU and GPU) + Vista OS need a lot of battery power. Vista needs more notebook resources as the Win XP and therefore notebooks with Vista OS run shorter on battery as the notebooks with preinstalled Win XP.
Last but not least you have to know that there are different battery models A stronger battery with higher *mA* value would help to run the notebook longer using the battery power.
Hope I could clarify this question.
    Bye

Hi, i have the same type of error when testing configuration, but it seems that the mapping even doesn't start :
    i'm creating an EBP to XCBL scenario, so it's a RFC->XI->XCBL 3.5
    Here is the Java exception
    Mappage d'interface
Can someone be helpful for that ?
    Regards
