Life in the slow lane

I know I'm slowing down as I get older, but what about my G5 Quad? I thought by adding more ram (2gb) video renderings and such would progress at a faster pace. Haven't noticed any marked improvement. Maybe I'm not using it correctly or my settings are incorrect. the 'info' pane recognizes all 4 gigs. Is there any way to tell if it's infected with something? I 'woke' it up the other day and the activity monitor was buzzing along at a frenzy. Had Safari and Mail open during its nap. Are aliens coming in during nap time and doing bad things? Inquiring minds (and mine too) want to know...
Thanks,
John

Currently on large drive: used=230.54gb, free=235.09 small drive: used=74.21, free=223.76 Just did another disk verification. Folders: 159,740. Files: 609,533. Could this by why there's a work slowdown?
Seems slow in loading most apps; slower than usual. I use Final cut pro, After Effects, Photoshop, all the processor hungry apps. Just seems things aren't running very fast, or fast enough for the size of the box, or so I thought. When I added two more gigs of ram, things like fcp and ae didn't seem to render that much quicker, if at all. I'm thinking I either have too many files/folders, gremlins, aka aliens (they do exist, btw), or I don't have things set up right, which is certainly possible. I think I may even have two entire systems on the large drive. Had to reload everything last year sometime and in finder, looks like dups of libraries and other stuff but am not brave enough to pick which ones to dump...
I repair preferences, verify disks, run macjanitor, etc.
It's a great box. Just wish I knew more about setting up and housekeeping, which I obviously don't. I'll check out your suggestions. I need all the help I can get :}
Thanks

• INFINITY BROADBAND IN THE SLOW LANE

Although I'm paying for 40MB in the whole time (nine months) that I've had BT Infinity I've only achieved that speed once! The average now is around 20 MB no better than the Virgin cabled system I transferred from.
The computer's fine, it's plugged straight into the hub. The Infinity(?) box is within yards of the house. Can I really be bothered to go through the  hassle of calling the Indian call centre? Probably not!
Quite apart from that, BT didn't transfer my account correctly leaving me with a large bill - what a complete con!

are you connecting to your hub by a wired connection or wireless ? also could you run the diagnostic speed test
http://speedtester.bt.com/ not the beta test so we can see your IP Profile

• Time Capsule with an Airport Extreme bridge resulted in slow LAN speeds

Wondering if other people are seeing this. I am unsure if this was a result of upgrading both my TC and AEx to 7.6, but my LAN speeds had suffered in this configuration.
1.  Comcast cable modem connected to the WAN port on my TC.
2.  Connected an ethernet cat6 cable from the TC to my Airport Extreme, which was configured as a bridge.
3.  My desktop was connected to the Airport Extreme.
4.  When doing file transfers within the LAN or general internet usuage, my network speeds were extremely low.
5.  Disconnected the cat6 cable from the TC and plugged that directly to my desktop.
6.  Network speed jumps up by a factor of 5. LAN file transfers and internet usuage has returned to what I had expected.
Is there a known issue where a bridged AEx conncted to another Airport "main" device will result in all machines connected via the AEx to have slow LAN speeds?
I didn't see this issue months ago. I did less than 2 months ago upgrade our machines to the 7.6 firmware, but after experiencing some hiccups on the network, reverted back to 7.5.2.  However, the slow LAN speeds haven't gone away when the two airport machines are connected to each other.
Any insight or advise is appreciated.

By now, millions of users have updated to 7.6 and I cannot recall seeing a post similar to yours on this forum.
As far as a "known issue", you would need to contact Apple regarding that.
Suggest that you have the AirPort checked out at an Apple store if you have one near you.

• Getting slow wifi speeds on wireless router connected to the same LAN

I have a main router/firewall with two wireless routers(linksys E2500 and TP link) connected to it.I want to configure them to all be on the same LAN (192.168.19.0) so i experimented with the TP link first by removing the ethernet cable from the WAN port and inserting it in the LAN port then I disabled DHCP and it worked perfectly. The only downside is that i am getting slower speeds on the TP link compared to the linksys which is still on the 192.168.1.0 network.Ethernet also works fine though i've observed that the TPlink name displays on the ethernet NIC. Can the speed be increased one way or the other or i have to change my setup?

• New to MacBook - slow LAN file transfer problem

My new MacBook is painfully slow when wifi-ing to my house LAN.
I turned in my old G4 iBook for a MacBook (2GHz C2D, 2GB, 10.4.9, all updates). I have a LAN that consists of a wired 1G Ethernet backbone (a Mini and a Powermac G5 are wired in) and a Snow AEB that provides 802.11g wifi access to the LAN. The wired LAN connects to a D-Link GB Ethernet switch so the wired systems can exchange files fast. The switch connects to a D-Link EBR2310 router that connects to a cable modem to ComCast. The router has the latest firmware (1.05, it's an 'A' version router).
The Mini, G5, and MB are static IPs on the LAN. The D-Link router passes out DHCP addresses >100, with addresses <101 reserved for static LAN IPs. I use static IPs for network reliability when recovering from power outages and other unforeseen glitches. The LAN has worked very well in this configuration, with fast file transfers among machines and good stability.
With my old 802.11g G4 iBook, I was able to watch DVDs that are stored on an external FW drive connected to the Mini. No stalls, no pauses, no dropouts - MenuMeters showed an average throughput of about 700KBytes/sec on the iBook when viewing a DVD. I used both VLC and DVD Player with good results.
With my new MacBook, I can't view my DVD files. 802.11g network transfer rates to the MB (indicated by MenuMeters and by Activity Monitor) vary rapidly from a high of about 1.1 MBytes/sec to 20 KBytes/sec. Movies stall, skip, etc.
Simple file copies from one system to another are also much slower with the MacBook - an average of ~100KBytes/sec vs. ~ 1.5 MBytes/sec with my old iBook. In short, the MacBook is dog-slow in file transfers from the other machines compared with my old iBook when using the wifi connection, with no change to the network infrastructure in going from the old laptop to the new. I would like to fix this.
My AEB is set up in bridge mode (simple access point) with WPA2 security. All three Macs are completely current with latest updates, as is the Snow AEB. The MB has 4 bars of signal strength. Slow file transfer problem does not change when moving the MB to or from the AEB.
Curiously, when I download a large file (like the Intel 10.4.9 combo update), the MB shows a steady ~800KBytes/sec download speed, with none of the speed variation it shows with file transfers from either the Mini or the G5. File transfers to/from the MB to either of the other Macs are very slow.
Both the Mini and the G5 have Airport cards: when I switch them from wired Ethernet LAN to wifi LAN, they transfer files between each other at ~ 2MBytes/sec - about what you'd expect from an 802.11g protocol. So the slow file transfer doesn't seem to be due to the AEB, it seems to be specific to the MacBook. When I connect the MB using its hardware Ethernet port, files transfer just as fast as the other systems.
I have tried these measures, without effect on the problem:
- power off/restart of every component in the system;
- changing the AEB to an open network mode;
- changing the MB from static IP to DHCP;
- toggling IPv6 on/off;
- running no applications other than Finder on all systems;
Activity Monitor on the MB doesn't show anything sucking up CPU cycles during file transfers. I have plenty of RAM. The only thing I've changed in the network is the swap of the iBook for the MacBook.
Can anyone suggest what else I can try to make acquisition of this nice shiny MacBook a step forward, rather than a step back? Thank you!

Hi,
Did you want to use the Live Migrations for that?
We recommend that you configure separate dedicated networks with gigabit or faster speed for live migration traffic and cluster communication, and these networks should be separate from the network used by the management operating system, and from the network
used by the virtual machines.

• Very slow LAN speed

I have a "MI424WR" router. Various pages say it has speeds up to 12 mebabyte/second transfer rate, but I am only getting no more then 3mb/s ever.
I have 1 desktop that is wired and 1 laptop that uses wireless
Help is apprecitated

Since you refer to slow LAN speeds, I assume you're referring to a transfer between the wired desktop PC and the wireless laptop.
Any transfer between the two is going to be constrained by the slowest component, which is your wireless connection.
You said you're getting "Mob/s".  I'm not clear if you're referring to megabits or megabytes.
If that number is megabytes, that's about average for a wireless-G connections.
MOB/sec (note the caps) * 8 bits/byte = 24Mbps
If you meant 3Mbps, then you're probably dealing with a wireless interference issue and should look at the usual wireless troubleshooting issues, such as changing the channel, eliminating sources of interference, etc.

• Battery life. The elephant in the room or is it just me?

So the trade-off against integrating the antenna into the case (at such cost) was to make room for a bigger battery, so we could enjoy longer battery life between charges on our shiny new iPhone 4s. Really? My 3G was nearly two years old when I traded up to the iP4, yet its battery discharged at a far slower rate than the 4's battery from out of the box. Is mine just fitted with a battery that came off the production line on Friday afternoon, or am I expecting too much from the new model given its enhanced capability (as compared to the 3G and bearing in mind I skipped the 3GS), which must be expected to consume more power? Whatever, I am disappointed by the battery life of the iPhone 4, yet surprised to read no mention of any battery issues in these posts, especially as battery life was supposed to be one of its selling points. The reviews also seem to confirm an improvement in battery life that just doesn't square with my own experience. Anybody got a view?

I'm surprised my battery is doing well although I have replaced my iphone for the 2nd time. But here is the result from the first replacement:

comparing to what others have posted, similar stats but seems like mine only goes for 5 hours at tops or a bit over. So i took it to the genius bar, and this is why they replaced my iphone for the 2nd time.
Here is what I do with my iphone 4,
Basically I unplug it at exactly at 7 am, through out the day, I only check my phone every hour. Do some textings, check 2-3 apps every hour. of course i get phone calls in the morning and at night so during the day it's not a problem. From the time my phone is in sleep mode, and the time I wake it up, sometimes it stays, but sometimes I lose 1%, but then the moment I text or check few apps, I lose 2% more, which is fine i guess as the apps does eats small amount.
As seen on my stats, I can only get 5 hours of usage somehow. Even though the standby stats says 1 day 14 hours.
As for my 2nd replacement, even if it has similar stats (still on first charge so I have to drain it to calibrate the accuracty). I'll probably just keep this one, as long as the phone last the entire day is fine with me.

• Why the slow network copy (USB Ethernet 7-10Mbps)?

I have the fllowing setup:
MBA running 10.5 - USB Ethernet (100Mbps) - Netgear 1000/100 ethernet hub - 1000MBps Ethernet on Mac mini C2D running 10.5 Server. The ethernet speed between MBA and mini should be 100Mbps. There is nothing else going on on the local LAN.
I am copying a huge file (Parallels volume) with rsync via ssh from MBA to mini, On the mini it goes to a FW400 connected fast Rocstor drive.
The speed I am getting during the copy is 680kB/s, which probably translates to something like 7-10Mbps raw ethernet speed with all the package overhead.
What I am wondering is this: Why is this so slow?
Message was edited by: Gerben Wierda

I am using rsync because I am synchronizing a (say) 27GB directory with many files with another machine and I do not want to copy everything every time I want to synchronize.
I tried different forms of transport:
- using the Finder to copy to a shared drive. This goes at a speed of 759kB/s or around 7Mbps.
- a direct scp from the MBA to the /tmp drive of the OS X Server (so no firewire drive involved) and the speed was around 800kBps, so again around 7Mbps.
- Using ftpd on the server:
- A local copy on the server via the network with ftp from /tmp to /tmp ran at 21MB/s, so around 180Mbps.
- A remote copy from MBA to /tmp on the server ran at 680kB/s or around 6Mbps.
Basically, it seems that so far whatever method I use, I can't get it above 7Mbps on a 100Mbps interface when going from MBA via ethernet to the OS X Server.

• Short Battery Life and Very Slow Data on 4S

Short Battery Life and Very Slow Data on 4S,
anyone else noticing the slow speed of data on this phone?

Yes, I measure my slow data on Sprint in kpbs, not Mpbs. Like standard is download maybe 250kpbs, upload 100kpbs (that's 0.25 Mbps and 0.1 Mbps). On the same tower my buddy who has an AT&T iPhone 4 shows 2.5Mbps download and 1.5Mbps upload (that's 2500kbps and 1500kpbs), a LOT faster. Sprint has not been much help.

I haven't shut it down in over a month. I shut it down yesterday for over 12 hours yet upon starting up again the slowness persists. Removed Google chrome application the speed arose slightly any tips? I contacted a support member but unfortunately my warranty has run out, he suggested that may be a result of putting the mac into sleep constantly, and not shutting down and that there may be files i can clear to remedy the issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
Regards.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

• Configuring SMTP Namespace Sharing between two Exchange Forests on the same LAN

Hi guys, really hoping that someone can help me with configuring SMTP Namespace Sharing between two Exchange Forests on the same LAN.
Basically, I have created a new forest and installed a new exchange organisation in this forest.  Both forests are located on the same IP subnet and a two way trust has been created between the forests.  Federated sharing has also been configured.
I can use ADMT to migrate the user and computer accounts to the new forest and also migrate test mailboxes over.  Ideally, I want to be able to do the mailbox migrations in stages so will need to be able to have mail flowing between the two forests.
I have read over the following article (http://ibrahimnore.wordpress.com/2012/09/06/configuring-smtp-namespace-sharing-between-two-exchange-forests-part-2/)
which is good but it's demonstrating over the internet, can anybody advise how this can be achieved on the local LAN?
Any help greatly appreciated :-)

Hi Gilliano,
Thanks for correct link. I must say this is a very good article indeed, I read the entire article and if you go to the 3rd part of this article, please note the text "DOMAINC.COM is configured as Internal Relay Accepted Domain on both the domains"
This is exactly what I asked you to check. Personally, I understand the method described in this article will work but its very complex to manage and administer, while the easiest option is to configure internal relay at the first place and no need to make
so many DNS changes and customizations to your environment.
The solution really depends on what your requirement is - Since you mentioned that you are migrating stuff over from source to destination - I feel this article is too complex for your situation and not really worth (for your requirement). The setup described
in the article is an excellent choice if you are planning to keep both forests alive for longer duration due to several reasons like compliance or company mergers and so on...
please let me know if my explanation is not clear enough.. we can even even have a one-on-one email conversation too!
All the best!
Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. Regards, Siva

• Remote devive access and acquiring signals from a different PC in the same LAN

Well, I'm still interested in knowing if the way to see the DAQ channels from one PC to another located in the same LAN is the Remote device acess RDA?
If the answer is yes I would appreciate the information from sombody who has done it.
Thanks

Please don't create another question. I answered you to a previous one that is the same than this. Here is also the response.
Hello,
the only easy way in order to do that is to use RDA ( Remote Device Access ). This is a component that is installed when you install NI-DAQ. Currently, RDA is only supported by Traditional NI-DAQ. So, if you have programmed your application using NI-DAQmx, it might be more dificult because you will have to use networking communication VIs as Datasocket,TCP/IP, ....
Here you have a link about RDA. There, there is a link to an Application Note called Networking Two PCs for Remote Data Acquisition

I hope this helps.

• Is there any way to fix the slow code completion in Netbeans 5.5+

Netbeans 5.5 or Netbeans 5.5.1
Is there any possible fix for the slow code completion within the editor? I've googled this issue and haven't found much of anything relevant.
While, not used all the time - a faster than what it is now code completion would be helpful.
Thanks,

• I just bought my first iphone.  I am so disappointed in the battery life on the iphone5.  Have the phones always been this way?  Is there anything in the works to improve the battery life?

I just bought my first iphone.  I am so disappointed in the battery life of the iphone 5.  Is this the norm for iphones?  Are they working on a fix to this problem?  Almost wishing I had bought something else.

Without knowing what battery life you are seeing we can't determine if you have a problem. Have you compared your usage to the Technical Specifications?
Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G
Standby time: Up to 225 hours
Internet use: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 8 hours on LTE, up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 10 hours
Audio playback: Up to 40 hours
Under normal use, unless there's a problem with your phone, battery life is comparable to any other smart phone and better than some. If you've never owned a smart phone before you will be disappointed with the battery life on all smart phones. You should expect to charge any of them daily. It's a mistake to think of it as a phone at all; it's a very powerful pocket-sized computer that can also make phone calls.
