Life of Backlight for Keyboard

Is there any downside to keeping the keyboard light on all the time (other than battery life)?
Thanks!

Hi rndmmac, welcome to Apple Discussions!
Other than battery life and power usage, no, there is not really a downside to having the keyboard backlight on all the time. The backlight in the keyboard (and the display too) is LED now, meaning that the life of that backlight will definitely far exceed the usable life of the computer itself. You could probably leave that backlight on 24/7 365 for 10 years and it would still be going strong.
The usual useful life of an LED is maybe 50,000-100,000 hours. At 50K, that would be maybe 5+ years. It also depends on other factors including how close to maximum output is used. Then there is the occasional random LED burnout.
I wouldn't necessarily count on anything being "typical" since there's a distribution of longevity.

  • The backlight for my keyboard

    the backlight for my keyboard on my new mac book pro (2012 OS X Mountain Lion) is not turning on. Ive tried rebooting and covering the camera. Nothing works... Also I feel like my battery runs out ridiculously fast.

    You may have a broken keyboard.  Take your MBP and reciept back to the apple store.  They will exchange it for another one.

  • No option for keyboard backlight or illumination

    no option for keyboard back light  in system preferences and my f5nf6 keys are not working either with a late 2011 macbook pro 13in with osx 10.8.5

    drdan_73,
    open the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, and select the Keyboard tab; is your “Adjust keyboard brightness in low light” checkbox checked, or unchecked?
    Do your other F… keys work properly? For example, do F1 and F2 change the screen brightness?
    Did your F5 and F6 keys work properly when Lion was installed on your MacBook Pro?
    Have you tried Lab Tick? (I don’t know if it functions under Mountain Lion or not.)

  • How to backlight my keyboard?

    Got a Macbook Air and I have tried to find how to backlight my keyboard. Under preferences - keyboard it does not offer me the option of backlighting. So how do I find out and where can I switch it on? Thanks for any help

    Looks like I can answer my own question. My MBA not only cannot backlight the keyboard - major disadvantage for me - it neither offers the option of ambient light adjustment.
    Dropping those features consumes more of my time - I make more mistakes typing (and yes, I can type 'blind' but since I'm typing on a 'English' keyboard that has to be set up for German typing, I sometimes have to able to quickly see the keys properly to remember which key is which in German) and have to adjust the brightness. I switched form Windows because I was tired of wasting my time - so this is certainly annoying when Apple is doing that too - for no good reason as far as I can see.
    Please Apple, do give me and other users enough credit. We really are intelligent enough to turn features on and off when we want them. Just taking them out will make me wonder what I will have to do without when buying Apple next time around. This is the wrong way of saving energy or whatever the excuse is! I don't think I would have bought the MBA without backlight if I had known. It is just too timeconuming for me.

  • Backlighting on keyboard

    i have a 2009 macbook 13-in titanium and i want to know if my computer comes with backlighting for the keyboard. my f5 and f buttons do not have commands either which i know on the newer models that is where the backlight is programmed to.
    thanks!

    The aluminum MacBook was introduced in Oct. '08 and discontinued in June '09 when it was rebranded as the 13" MacBook Pro. There were 2 aluminum models: 2.0GHz without backlit keyboard and a 2.4GHz with backlighting.

  • By default, on a mac keyboard F3 lets you see all the open apps and the such. However, I changed it so that I use those keys for keyboard shortcuts; But i'd like the normal F3 key to still work without me having to press FN.

    rajlego,
    in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

  • What is the ActionListener.getSource for keyboard keys?

    Hello,
    I am building a small game where you move something in a JFrame by pressing the up/down/left/right arrow keys on your keyboard.
    I presume I take care of this with eventhandling. I can sort of understand this topic because I use it with buttons. Then it goes like this:
    ActionEventHandler event = new ActionEventHandler();
    startButton.addActionListener( event );
    exitButton.addActionListener( event );and
    private class ActionEventHandler implements ActionListener
        public void actionPerformed( ActionEvent e )
          if ( e.getSource() == startButton )
            Application.game();
          else if ( e.getSource() == exitButton )
            Application.exit();
      }Now can I just add more if statements to this to test for keyboard strokes? If so, how do I program this? If you can help me, please be as specific as possible because I am pretty new to the game and most of the solutions I get from these boards I cannot use, because I don't know where to use them or how....
    Thank you!

    I would use the KeyListener. It has three methods, keyPressed, keyReleased and keyTyped. For a game, I believe you are only interested in the first two. You can then from the KeyEvent find out what keys and modifiers are pressed and released.

  • Problem with backlight on keyboard. Mountain Lion.

    Hi 2all.
    I have some problem. I have MacBook Pro (early 2011), i7. Some days ago I upgrade my MacBook OS to Mountain Lion (clean install). In Snow Leopard I can turn off the backlight of keyboard, and then it will be off. If I need it, I turn it on. But now I have another situation. I turn off my backlight, but after log off user, or restart MacBook backlight of keyboard turns on... Whats happen?!
    Thx fo help.
    Best regards,
    Kyros.

    Lab Tick is a shareware menu item that gives you complete control over the keyboard backlight. You can set the level of illumination by hand, and electively disable automatic adjustments made by the OS.

    my PC sign: driver for keyboard filter not found. what can i do?

    Hi:
    I don't think it is a big deal but let's see if we can find a driver for it.
    Please click on the missing keyboard filter in the device manager. Then click on the details tab. In the Properties drop down list, select the second item (Hardware ID's).
    Post  the top string of characters you see in the window.
    That will give me more information to go on.

  • Hi yesterday i downloaded a software from i tunes for keyboard short cut and i don't know how to use them and install them, how to use keyboard shorts bought from i tunes

    hi yesterday i downloaded a software from i tunes for keyboard short cut and i don't know how to use them and install them, how to use keyboard shorts bought from i tunes

    You can install it on your iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) either by redownloading it directly on the device via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on it, or by connecting the device to your computer's iTunes and syncing it to it.
    Syncing apps from a Mac : iTunes 11 for Mac: Sync and organize iOS apps
    from a PC : iTunes 11 for Windows: Sync and organize iOS apps
    As to how to then use the app, if the description on the app's description page in the store doesn't describe how to use it in enough detail, then is there a link to the developer's website on its description page, and does that have details ?

  • IOCTL for keyboard IO Solaris 10 and Solaris 8

    Do you know what has chaned for keyboard io via solaris 8 and solaris 10 update 5?
    Here is the story. I have a solaris binary work fine in solaris 8. It remaps the keyboard input (most probably using ioctl)
    according to some table it has (actually a binary file on the filesystem). Code uses open windows.
    It has told me that it work fine with free solaris update 3.
    I am trying to make the code work in free solaris update 5, but keyboard input is not converted to something else.
    We have installed OWA package for compatibility.
    I have tried changing keymap of openwindows via various way openwin configuration, xmodmap, changing keytable files, etc. Here are resuts.
    Solaris 8 and till Solaris update 3:
    a -> A
    In Solaris 10 update 5:
    a -> 3
    all keymap changes did not effect the result for solaris update 5.
    The interesting part is If I start openwin via +kb option
    a is converted to @
    I don't have the source code for the binary.
    What could be the reason for that? and more important any way to fix this?

    Found the problem.
    In solaris 8 keycodes are up to 159 and in Solaris 10 up to 254(?).
    and keycodes refers to different characters between these two versions.
