Life Span of Battery?

I have a two year old 1.25 GHz PB. The battery doesn't hold a charge for very long now. This computer has been used heavily and I'm wondering now if it's time to get a new battery. Does anyone know how many charge cycles my PB can take? What's the average life span of a battery if it's used heavily? 1 Yr., 2 Yrs?

Hi Harry --
Yup, two years is a pretty good amount of time to have one battery, especially if it's been used pretty regularly, as both time and use will degrade the battery's capacity and its ability to hold a charge. It may well be time to replace it.
You should consider downloading a free app called Coconutbattery -- http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27425 -- it will tell you lots of useful info about the condition of your battery, such as it's original capacity, it's current capacity and the number of cycles its been through.
With regard to number of cycles and lifespan, Apple's Web page on notebook batteries states as follows:
Battery Lifespan
A properly maintained PowerBook or iBook battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 300 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs.
But I've seen elsewhere, that at or around 300 cycles, the battery really begins to lose practical functionality, though the key numbers are capacity related, not cycles if you ask me.
For a frame of reference, my battery stats are: after 10 months and 167 cycles, my battery's original capacity of 4400 mAh is now 4228 mAh.
Post back your numbers and we'll advise further.

  • If macbook retina gets too hot, can it shorten battery life span ?

hey guys, when I'm gaming on Windows in bootcamp, I'm getting temps upwards of 176 degrees F. Is this normal ? Can it damage the battery life span ? For instance, if battery reads 8 hours on full charge but now it reads 7 hours with same processes running each time

No, that will lenghten its life. Using the MacBook on the battery is what shortens its life.
If you're running Lion your battery will run down much faster than on Snow Leopard. Lion runs in 64 bit all the time where Snow Leopard only ran in 64 bit as needed.

  • Battery / hard drive life-span of the Zen Visio

How long on average do internal lithium-ion batteries li've, specifically those found in Creative players such as the ZVM? What would be a rough number of recharges possible before the battery fails, and does the life-span of the battery depend on chronological time as well as number of recharges? Should a battery outli've a hard dri've or vice versa? Also is the life of a hard dri've potentially infinite if it is treated with care? If so, what can be done with a ZVM whose battery has died, but whose hard dri've still works?

    ) Li-ion batteries are good for 300-400 charge/discharge cycles.
    2) Yes, Li-ion batteries deteriorate over time even if they are not used.
    3) The HD should out li've your battery
    4) Send the player back to Creative and they'll replace the battery for a fee. It used to be $80 USD.
You can expect the battery to last 2-3 years.

  • IPod life span when using Hi-Fi

    Hello,
I was wondering about the effects of using an ipod in the Hi-Fi. I understand the Hi-Fi recharges the battery.
My question is if the ipod uses it's battery (and reduces it's battery life span when playing in the Hi-Fi or does the ipod use electrical power when used in the Hi-Fi plugged into the wall.
For example, if I listen to the ipod through the Hi-Fi for 14 hours or about one charge, has my ipod lost one of its (approx) 400 charges?
All in all, loving both the ipod and Hi-Fi, just curious about the overall battery effects of the Hi-Fi.

    Hi gussie byrne,
I'm not sure how to verify these, but does the article on wikipedia help?

  • Is it better for your battery if you let it run down all the way and then charge it? Or to charge it whenever you have the opportunity?  Which is better for the life of the battery?

I was wondering it the life of the battery would last longer if you let the battery run down all the way and then charge it? Or to charge it whenever you have the opportunity even if it doesn't have a low battery?  Which is better for the life of the battery and prolong the life of the battery?

I've had a iPhone 4s since March 2012, and it's battery is pretty useless now.  I was using the app Battery Doctor (Battery Saver, Battery Life) by Beijing Kingsoft Internet Security software, which encourages the user to charge more often, whenever battery life drops below 100% full and greater than 20% full, and gives ratings according to the number of full, partial & overcharges done, but I'm concerned that charging like that actually results in worse battery life??
I now have an new iPhone 5 and don't want the battery to only last as short as the last one did
    Any advice/comments please

  • When I run multiple Microsoft powerpoint files at a time on my MacBook Air, it simply gets hotter and generates little noise (most probably fan noise). Will this make any effect on life span of MBAir??

When I run multiple Microsoft powerpoint files at a time on my MacBook Air, it simply gets hotter and generates little noise (most probably fan noise). Will this make any effect on life span of MBAir??

    Theoretically, yes.
Heat, and heat cycling certainly do take a toll on even solid state components. I have several "very old" Macintosh computers, and the logic boards exhibit the effects.
The fan too, running at higher speeds, does eventually cause wear. More than anything, the higher airflow leads to a higher propensity for dust accumulation on the fan, and the heat exchangers.
In practical terms though, maybe not so much. If you plan on having your computer exhibit a reasonable useful life before you retire it or upgrade, you may never experience any of the detrimental effects. I rarely use a computer longer than 3 years, before I sell, give it away, or just stop using it.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Your computer is well designed to give you a long life, even in the manner in which you describe. Take care of it, but use it for what you bought it for. Nothing you mention is in any way, abuse.

  • C4740 - Poor Color Cartridge Life Span

When print 4x6 photos from my C4740 printer I am only getting about 18 prints from the color cartridge. The original cartridges that came with the print seemed to last forever. Since replacing them I have replaced the color cartridge 3 times and working on my 4 cartridge in the time span of 2 days. The ones that came with the printer lasted two months or longer.
So my question is what could be causing the cartridges to have such a short life span?
Is 18 to 20 4x6 photos normal yield for a ink cartridge?
Also I am noticing that the black cartridge ink level is not changing so it leads me to believe it is not being used. I thought it had previously been used when printing photos but I could be wrong.

Here are some specs re: Photo yield expectations for the C4600 which will reference same as C4700.
HP 60 Tricolor - Photo Page Yield
    HP 60 Tri-color Ink Cartridge (CC643W)
    Approximately 45 4X6 Photos
Actual yield varies considerably based on content of printed pages and other factors.

  • Maximum life-span of process instance

    Hi
Is there any maximum life-span (duration) limit for an in-process instance in Oracle BPM?
In other words, does OBPM supoort very long running business processes (e.g. processes that run for over 4 years etc).
Please note- I am talking about life span in-process instance, and not completed or aborted instances.
A pointer to any release documentation section in this regards would be a great help.
    Thanks
    Hemant

    Hi Hemant,
Work item instances can remain active inside a process for years. There is no documentation that I'm aware of that specifically states this, but it's the way it has worked for the last 10 years. Large insurance and financial institutions using the product today have to have this capability.

  • Would using a Apple Time Capsules be easier to use as you can use the Airport Utility to set everything up? Would using encryption affect the speed / durability / life span of the drive in a computer or Time Capsule?

Would using a Apple Time Capsules be easier to use as you can use the Airport Utility to set everything up?
OR would there be better programs out there that would do more than Airport Utility on a non Apple drive?
Would using encryption affect the speed / durability / life span of the drive / Fusion drive in a computer or Time Capsule?

    1. Time Capsules are the easiest device to setup for Time Machine.
    2. Sorry this is unclear. There are a huge number of routers available that have far superior controls than apple routers.. some support Time Machine.. most don't. They negate your question 1. in being difficult to setup. And alot of 3rd party devices that claim Time Machine compatibility are unreliable.
    3. Encryption is irrelevant.

  • HT3371 My Macbook Pro does,nt seem to have any life in the battery does it need a new one

My Macbook Pro does,nt seem to have any life in the battery does it need a new one

You can check the actual capcity by opening the "System Information" application in the folder "/Applications/Utilities".
Then you can select the information section "Hardware > Power" to see the information regarding the battery:
The important information is highlighted in the image above.  The ratio of Charge Remaining (when fully charged) to Full Charge Capacity is a good metric of how "healthy" the battery is.  The Number if cycles is another indicator.  The higher the number of cycles the lower I would expect the ratio of Charge Remaining (when fully charged) to Full Charge Capacity.

  • I am having difficulty charging my iphone with the cable. Its been 1 yr since I bought the phone. Does the cable becomes useleless after a year. Whats the life span for the cable?

I am having difficulty charging my iphone with the cable. Its been 1 yr since I bought the phone. Does the cable becomes useleless after a year. Whats the life span for the cable? It automatically gets disconnected and then get connected again.

That is shorter than normal. Any signs of wear? And you're sure it's the cable, not one of the pins in the iPhone's charging port?

  • Increasingly FCP runs to 104 degrees C when operating. This can damage MAC BOOK PRO RETINA components, shortening their life-span.

Increasingly FCP runs to 104 degrees C when operating. This can damage MAC BOOK PRO RETINA components, shortening their life-span.
Can you suggest what I should do apart from shutting down word documents and other software, Parallels, Windows 7 when using FCP?
I am gravely concerned with this high heat. I have to use a remote keyboard it is so hot, but gravely concerned with with the damage the heat is doing to to MAC BOOK PRO RETINA.
ironic - given I switched to Mac from PC this year JUST for  FCP editing.
BTW - I am a film lecturer advising thousands of K-12 teachers and a have a report to deliver to the Education Department shortly.
    Please advise. Many thanks. Schbang

You didn't mention what sort of work you're doing - if you're just cutting video this shouldn't happen.
My suggestion would be to optimize all of your media to ProRes .
Even though PR is a much larger file it's much easier on the CPU. Playing back compressed media is like rendering all day.
I routinely use an old 2007 MBP with a core 2 duo and FCP7. I can cut and color correct with no problem at all using ProRes LT files. The only time it gets hot is during long renders.
I have the laptop elevated on a pedestal that allows air to pass underneath . During long renders I  point a small fan at it which often cools it enough to shut the internal fans down.
All that said, I know the retina is a more compact design and components are much closer to each other.
So, I'd be interested to hear from another retina owner.
    Good luck.

  • BDC Session Life Span?

    Hi All,
I'm wondering if there is a life span for a BDC session once it is created? For example, viewing your sessions in SM35, would there be a point in time that a session will be deleted?
    Thanks,
    Scott

if u maintain parameter keep = 'X' in the function module  then it will be there in session untill u delete it.
if u dont maintain keep = ' ' in the function module it will automatically deleted once it session get executed.
In some  cases how long it will be there that u can come to know if contact ur BASIS people

  • How long is a iphone life span before it stops working

how long can you use a iphone before it needs repair or it is dead?

If you actually take care of your device... the only limit on it's life is the battery.
Apple makes no statements, from what I've found, on the life expectancy of the battery.  That being said, many people are still using original and 3G iPhones with the original battery, so that's 4-5 years at least.
