Lift & Stamp AUTO exposure

hi gang,
for a long time, you couldn't apply auto exposure to a series of images, and if you lift & stamp an auto setting, it would apply the actual value, not the "auto functionality" to other images. *well, something has changed, lift & stamp can do this now*. i'm not entirely sure with what update this changed, but it's brilliant nevertheless.
select an image, within the exposure brick, click on "auto" (leave the other sliders in the brick alone). Lift the settings (in the lift/stamp hud, it will now be referred to as "+default settings+". ah!
now select a range of other images, stamp your settings, and voila... *auto exposure different to every image*!

I need this feature because I shoot some time lapse and during the day I stay in aperture priority mode so the camera doesn't always pic the same shutter speed. When I play back the JPEG sequences there'll be some flicker in it.
After Effects has a filter that can kind of smooth it out but if Aperture would apply Auto Exposure to all the photos it'd probably do a better job. I guess I could do one photo at a time but with 500 to 2000 photos it would be a pain.

  • Stamp 'Auto exposure' not working?

    Hello,
I've about 100 photo's. All taken under the same conditions.
    I want to:
         - auto white balance
         - auto exposure
         - auto enhance
    them.
So I did this to the first photo, then lifted metadata & adjustments, highlighted Adjustments, selected photo's no. 2 until the last one and stamped them.
Aperture was a while busy processing.
After processing was complete, I discovered that the 'auto exposure' hadn't been applied (or false applied?) to several (probably all) photo's.
The photo's were clearly over-exposed. So I stamped some of them again, one by one, to if anything would change but no, nothing changed.
However, upon selecting a single photo and clicking 'Exposure->Auto' in the Adjustments tab, the Exposure was adjusted (example: from 1,24 to 0,13).
In the online help I cannot find anything that says that you can't stamp 'auto exposure' or that you can't stamp several adjustments at once.
Any idea why this isn't working (correctly) and how to solve it?
Checking 100 photo's one by one seems a bit silly to do . . .
I'm using Aperture 3.4.5 on a MacBook Pro (early 2011 model) with OS X 10.8.4, and no outstanding updates.
    Kind regards,
    emeu1

I can duplicate what you are seeing. The problem shows up depending on the order you apply the adjustments to the first image.
    1. First apply auto-exposure, then apply auto-enhance. Lift and stamp the adjustments. The auto-exposure adjustment is NOT applied to the selected images.
    2. Now switch the order... first apply auto-enhance, then apply auto-exposure. Lift and stamp the adjustments. The auto-exposure adjustment is applied to the selected images.
So it would appear that stamping auto-adjustments fails depending on the order the adjustments were originally applied, at least when auto-enhance is included.
The auto-exposure adjustment does show up in the lift-and-stamp HUDs, but isn't being applied.
    Some other notes...
Auto-enhance never seems to adjust exposure; it uses a combination of other adjustments, sometimes not always for the better.
Auto white balance gets thrown into auto-enhance, so I didn't include it when testing.
This smells like a bug to me, and I'm going to report it as such. You should do the same if you agree.
One more reason I don't like the whole lift & stamp approach to applying adjustments to multiple images. Blah!

  • Auto Exposure and Auto Levels

I have yet to figure out if it is possible to apply both auto exposure and levels to multiple images, and I do not mean lifting and stamping the same settings. If not this is #1 on my wish list.

I initially thought this was a glaring omission from the beginning. However, these auto functions have such unpredictable effects on images that they really do need individual application and review anyway. Not being able to batch apply them just enforces good practice going image by image so that one doesn't wind up with a bunch of badly adjusted images. Adjusting similar images with lift and stamp is more prudent though deserving of individual review as well.

  • Batch auto exposure or auto levels for a bunch of RAW images?

    Hi,
I want to apply the "auto level" to a bunch of RAW images all at the same time. I've tried to use the lift+stamp tools, but they lift the applied level instead of the function "auto level" itself, and thus uses the same levels for all the images. I've also tried to uncheck the "Primary only" function, but it still doesn't work - if I select a bunch of photos and press "Auto level", only one of them will have it applied.
Does anyone have an idea of a way to do this?
    Thanks!

There was a post a week or so back that discussed this and one way of achieving it.

  • How to Lift/Stamp specific adjustments

How do I pick for ex. only Saturation or contrast, with the lift/Stamp tool. Not all of the adjustments in Exposure.

Yes you could create a preset, but no way to batch apply to a selection of images. Lift/Stamp is the only way for that .... only the thick bordered image out of all selected images get processed by an adjustment.

  • Selective Lift & Stamp Operation

Hey all - can anyone offer an approach to lift and stamp only 1 adjustment on a given image?
I have a number of images that I've "developed", but and looking at the series as a whole, need to apply further changes to bring them in sync with each other. After getting my adjustments correct for my master, I am often overwriting ALL previous adjustments on the rest of the collection.
Can anyone advise how to selectively choose which adjustment is applied? (ie only an exposure tweak, but NOT a crop, sharpen or etc?) This also seems to apply to specific keywords, IPTC data etc.
    Much appreciated,
    Ted

Is this a common approach for mac applications? (it seems pretty non-intuitive from my pov)
Well, I have found Mac apps to be intuitive, in general. I think in this case, it's not, and you must learn what the Add/Replace buttons mean, or that you must delete the unwanted settings. The Lift & Stamp Add/Replace buttons make logical sense to me once I realized that Add means to add the setting to the existing set, while Replace means to replace all the settings with only what is in the Lift & Stamp HUD. Deleting the unwanted settings is easy.
There is a lot to Aperture that is not immediately apparent, which is why I learned so much going through the Luna/Long book. Like many applications I have tackled (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) there is a learning curve.

  • Using auto exposure give the same settings for every picture

for some reason, aperture 3.0 has been giving me the same settings when using the auto exposure on raw files. i swear it wasn't that way when i first started using the program. regardless of the image, it always sets an exposure of 1.0 and a recovery of 0.0.

GLITCHY GIMMICKS Just imported 2 raw & 2 Jpegs, Adj WB & Exp. on a raw. Then went to Library & turned on Quick Preview, went back to Adjustments and could still carry out adjustments. Went to another image and it still allows adjustments but the adjustments are being applied to the previous image. Typical Aperture Glitches. Apple would do better to get the stuff they have; working proper, before producing more and more GLICHY GIMMICKS Allan

  • Auto exposure not applying when using the auto enhance function

I am on Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite. I use a Canon 6D and shoot in RAW. When I am doing the batch auto enhance to my shots, I find that even though in the adjustments preset Auto Enhance includes auto exposure, often it is actually not applied. Are there anyways to fix this? The images actually are a bit underexposed and I now need to go through picture by picture to click on the auto button under adjustment. Thanks.

Have you set your camera to use Canon's Highlight Tone Priority? Then most of the Raw files will be underexposed, because Aperture is developing the RAW file "as is" and not applying the in-camera settings. See Keith Barkley's user tip.

  • Auto exposure not working

I'm using Aperture 1.5.6 and Leopard. I've always been able to use the Auto exposure button at the top. I just noticed it's grayed out and I can't use it. Is this a known problem?
    Thanks for any help.

What is the best image browser to export my images first to using a card reader. On my old tiger OS they exported to Preview and I hated that. Should I take them straight into Adobe DNG or DPP and how do I tell it to auto go to whichever app? I'm an avid Photoshoper so would that be the best possibility. I want to have the ability to edit them first before importing into Aperture.

  • Aperture freezes every time I push the auto exposure button. Any suggestions?

Aperture freezes every time I push the auto exposure button. Any suggestions?

What is your Aperture version? And since when are you haveíng this problem? Did this start, after you imported  photos or updated software? Did you move your Aperture library or your original image files? Did Aperture crash?
Does it only happen when you are working in your main Aperture library, or also when you are using a different Aperture library?
As a test, create a new Aperture library and and try to adjust an image there. Does it work?

  • Selective lift-stamp

Okay, let's say I'm editing a batch of images, and the first thing I've done is level them all. (I'm shooting from a boat so almost every image needs some degree of leveling.) Then I notice my white balance isn't what I want it to be, and I'd like to batch correct all images to a new temp and tint. Is it possible to lift JUST the white balance from one frame, and stamp it on all the images, without overwriting the straighten adjustments I've already made?

Yes. In the Lift+Stamp HUD, just highlight and then press delete for the adjustments you don't want to stamp.

  • Apple please rework the auto exposure adjustment

90% of the time, the result is worse than before. It seems, Aperture's auto exposure adjustment is based on an average of the whole picture. So in its effort to get a well distributed histogram over the whole range, it happily blows the brighter parts of the picture.
I usually try to recover most of the highlights except small reflections etc. and then lighten up shadows and mid-tones with the appropriate tools to get a well exposed picture.
So I would prefer, that the auto exposure adjustment would be more sensitive towards blown highlights especially larger contiguous areas of highlights.
If you can't find an algorithm that works reliable, probably give me two separate auto exposure adjustment buttons. One adjusts to overall good exposure, like it is currently, the other tries to prevent blown highlights.
An even more advanced auto exposure adjustment would be, to combine the current exposure adjustment with some shadow and mid-tones adjustment, in case the exposure adjustment with preserving highlights led to an underexposed image.
I don't expect this to give perfect results, but it would be a real timesaver to use it as a starting point for manual fine tuning.
Not to bash Aperture but to encourage you to improve it: ACR's auto exposure mechanism is doing a much better job than Aperture's current one.

Well, obviously all your photos are already exposed perfectly!
(Seriously: when you say "nothing happens", do you mean absolutely nothing? Does the "Exposure" panel's check-box become checked after you hit the Auto button? If so, then it made SOME adjustment (though perhaps not enough for you to notice, see initial comment!) If not, then yeah, something is not working right for you.

  • Lift & Stamp - why??

I have a large number of images that I'd like add various metadata to - in particular the caption field.
It beggars belief that I cannot simply apply a caption for all selected images in the caption box and then go.
Instead I have to faff about with the lift & stamp tool!
I'm sure the tool has it's uses in other areas but for applying metadata to selected images surly this is a rather long-winded way about it?

Ahh yes! Thank you Jade, that's much better

  • ISight auto exposure

    Hi,
I'm working on a real-time image processing and recognition project using apple's built-in iSight camera. Its auto-exposure and auto-focus is really giving me a headache. I googled a lot, including search in Apple discussion, all I got so far is to use the iGlass program. I tried it and the "exposure lock" feature did work. Unfortunately, that is not an option for me.
Followed some tutorials, I'm using QTKit to capture video from iSight camera. I used QTCaptureDeviceInput, QTCaptureDecompressedVideoOutput, QTCaptureSession, etc, very basic stuff directly from the tutorial.
Is there a way to disable iSight's auto-exposure and auto-focus without using any 3rd party app?
    Thanks in advance!
