Light for iSight camera?

I keep having a problem where if I am working on the couch or on the road, the lighting is too dim for anyone to see me on iChat. I remember there being a light for the old iSight camera, does anyone know if there is something similar for the built-in iSight camera? It would help out a lot.
Thanks in advance.

Hello BayArea MacFan
With the suggestions above, you have several good options.
I don't know of anything like the old Griffin SightLight for use with built-in iSight.
I have a SightLight, but use it only on the road. For daily use at home, I light my face with a small clamp-on lamp like this one. I tried several different bulbs and settled on a small (9 watt) "warm" toned fluorescent bulb that gave the best color balance without being too bright or too hot.

If this is the TimeFox you are posting about, I don't understand why you think there might be any connection to an iSight camera.  Please explain further.

Not sure I understand your question because Photo Booth is "fun" software for iSight.
However, you can use any OS X image editor application to modify images
(cud put hats on make cool faces and stuff) you have captured
with your iSight. The editor app I use is Adobe PhotoShop Elements.

  • Is it possible to have other recording qualities for iSight camera?

I have just lashed out on +QuickTime Pro+, and the very first time I fired it up I thought: "Oh, Oh, I've wasted my money". Every other program I tried before I decided on QT Pro had the ability to use a variety of recording-quality settings for the iSight camera. With QT Pro I get just three:
    * MPEG-4 (320 x 240, ~ 264 kb/s)
    * H-264 (320 x 240, ~256 kb/s)
    * Native (640 x 480, 90 Mbits/s)
Not much of a variety. You either choose the low settings, or jump to the high setting at almost 400 times the data rate.
Is it possible to obtain a few more settings ( i.e. 640 x 480 using H.264) via third-party software or other technique?
Also, can I turn off sound recording if I so wish?

Thanks, RickToronto, for the suggestion about +QT Broadcaster+. A nifty little program and I'm sure I'm going to be able to put it to use sometime, but after testing the various compression options at 640 x 480, including NONE, I could not get the frame rate greater than about 10, whereas using the NONE option in +QT Pro+ allowed me to get 640 x 480 at 18 fps. There must be a fair amount of overhead in using +QT broadcaster+.
Looks like I'll be sticking to +QT Pro+, recording using the NATIVE option, then compressing afterwards. Doing that certainly shows up the amount of computation needed for compression. It took my G5 about 6 hours to compress one hour of 640 x 480 @ 18fps (~40 GB). And in addition, I got the impression that the output looks better from +QT Pro+ than from +QT Broadcaster+, but that might just be my imagination.
One last matter: one of the options in +QT Broadcaster+ -- the control options for iSight -- look almost identical to those I saw in a program called +BTV Pro+. Would the +BTV Pro+ fellow have 'borrowed' the look from Apple, or has Apple licensed them from him?

  • Other uses for iSight camera??

    I was just wondering:
Many DVD recorders have a firewire input for copying DV tapes - can the iSight camera be connected to make live recordings?
Some DV camcorders have DV input (for recording from other sources and copying iMovie projects back to tape) - can the iSight camera be connected to the DV input for aux camera?

  • MBPr requires SMC restart for iSight camera

New MBP with Retina seems to be having a problem with iSight camera since installing Mountain Lion. It seems that every second day or so the camera stops being recognized and I have to do an SMC reset to restore normal operation. I have checked the USB settings under "About this MAC" and the camera still shows up as being connected even when applications like FaceTime and Skype stop detecting it.
Any help would be very much appreciated, Thanks!

i have the exact same issue. i didnt notice it before mountain lion though

  • Schematic for isight camera

    Hi there,
I have a 20" iMac with an insight camera...I had it repaired recently re upgraded to a Terabite HDD and the wires for the insight camera was accidentally ripped off of the board. I am not sure what wire goes where so i am looking for a SCHEMATIC wiring diagram which shows me which wire goes where...
    Thanks again

I agree with Rudegar that Apple does not offer schematics to the public.
It sounds like you have already tried restarting the Mac and using Apple's suggestions here without results:

Whoever did the disk drive upgrade should have reconnected the camera.  If he cannot or will not do so now, contact your Apple-Authorized Service Provider.  An AASP will have the needed test equipment, special tools and technical data to properly diagnose and correct your problem.

  • Change preferences for built-in isight camera?

I have a MacBook Air Rev C, 120GB, and it has a built-in isight camera. I wanted to change the video settings as I look really dark on camera and looked for isight in Applications and couldn't find it. Is that because you can't change any settings for isight camera?

  • Built In iSight camera has stopped working on 27 inch iMac and 27 inch LED.

The camera's on my 27 inch  i7  imac and 27 inch cinema display all of a sudden just stopped working. I checked in the system profiler, and both show that
they are connected. When I try video chat in iChat the green light comes on and connects like it's a one way video chat... when I try and switch to the display monitor's iSight the green light switches to the other monitor, but the camera is still black... I tried this with Facetime, Skype, and Photobooth, all nothing... Any insght into this would be great. I'm thinking that it could be an internal hardware problem with the machine... Logic or Motherboard....
    Any info would be helpful
    thank you

    Built-in iSight cameras
These steps are for iSight cameras that are built into a computer, such as the iMac G5 (iSight) or later, the MacBook, or MacBook Pro.
See if the issue is application-specific.
Try another application (iSight works with applications like iChat, PhotoBooth, and iMovie HD 6) to see if the iSight camera exhibits the same behavior in all applications. If it only happens in one application, try reinstalling that application.
See if the issue is user-specific.
Test your iSight camera in another user account. If the issue only occurs in one user, the issue would be isolated to user settings.
Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
    Reset SMC or PMU
Reset your computer's SMC or PMU, and then check System Profiler again. (SMC reset instructions for iMac G5 (iSight), Intel-based iMacs; PMU reset instructions for MacBook and MacBook Pro.)

Try zapping the PRAM.  See KB Article http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243 OS X Mountain Lion: Reset your computer’s PRAM
If you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it.

  • ISight Camera not working and green light won't cut off

Ok, so I used to use macs all the time (exclusively) then I left for a few years, and now that I am back I have had a great experience so far except for this oddity...
I have no idea why but all of the sudden my little green light beside my built-in isight camera won't go away, I am not even trying to use it in any application. When I do, however, try to use it in photobooth for example it yields nothing but blackness. So, to troubleshoot I figured I'd try two things:
Re-installing Mac OS X from scratch using the CDs that came with it (no big loss, I wanted to customize the installation anyways)
Reset the SMC (I am used to resetting PRAM and stuff like that, so it's been a while for me)
Both of those have yielded no change.
I would have searched the forums for answers but apparently that feature has been turned off temporarily to help "improve support", or something I read rather quickly earlier lol
So I call upon you, Mac Geniuses, to please come to my aid...surely there is something else I can do to fix the isight on my macbook. I just got it, granted I got it refurbished from Apple, I expected nothing less than top notch from Apple as they have always delivered before.
Thanks in advance for any help!!
    -Joshua

Ok, my mistake...When I went to reset the SMC I noticed when I upgraded the memory the retention bar that holds things *around the battery, I guess* into place wasn't in there the way it should be, the metal tab wasn't in it's little slot, so I fixed that error, then went on with the procedure and then no more problem
I'm an idiot, Apple rules, I'll be the first to admit it LOL
    Have a great day!

  • For those concerned:  The iSight camera is lower quality.

I really do not care, but it is noticeably "softer" or less focused/clear than the MBP or my iMac.

    Hello ilovemyjc
The difference seems to me to be related to the Ø.3 MP camera in MBA versus the 1.3 MP in new MacBooks and MacBook Pros.
There are a couple of ideas that can help you get the best image quality from either Mac:
    • Use good lighting for the best iSight picture.
    • As shown in Mac OS X 10.5: iChat system requirements,
iChat video quality depends on broadband speed (bandwidth.)
I have tested iChat video with an MBA user who has good broadband speed (> 500 kbps up AND down), and his picture is only slightly lower in quality than when he uses his MacBook from the same internet connection.
If you need MBA's small size and weight features, the smaller video stream should not be a problem. Less video data uses less battery and processor power, generate less heat in MBA's small case, require less hard disk space for saved images or videos, and result in smaller wireless transmissions.
If you need higher resolution images, use the other MacBooks.
