Light Leak Defect in Northern Virginia Phones

There has been much discussion of the "light leak" issue on these boards. On the left side of the phone, between the bezel and the black o-ring, light from the screen escapes -- and dust and moisture can get inside.
In the past two weeks, I've had 5 phones, from 3 different Northern Virgina Apple stores, all with this problem. Most recently, a Specialist opened 3 brand new boxes for me, all having the light leak defect.
I was told that the light leak was "within the acceptable tech specs", and told they couldn't open up more than three new phones for me in one visit -- was told I'd have to go back to another store, and probably would have to settle for a refurbished "warranty" phone.
So, first a warning to those condidering purchasing a new iPhone -- look out for this problem before you leave the store.
Second, a question for the forum: What are the practical harms of this defect? Can dust and moisture get inside and damage the phone?

Hi Arturo Bandini,
I too had the same problem with my iPhone 3G. There was quite a large gap where the rubber was not sealed properly. A spec of dust got under the screen. It was literally the only thing I could stare at while using the phone.
I scheduled a Genus Bar appointment and got a new phone. The new phone, luckily, is not defective.
As others have mentioned, I do not believe that this is "within the technical specs". This is a big issue and I advise that you try to keep finding one that is not defective.
Out of all my friends and family with both second and first gen iPhones, I am the only one that has gotten one with the light leak issue. I think it's an unusual case for 5 phones, in a row, to have it.
Sorry and best of luck on finding one that is 100% up to your standards.

  • Light Leaks and reboots on CLNR.

So my new phone per the great policy was replaced with a refurb. That seems fair. The refurb I noticed has light leaks and the screen appears like it its not tightly sealed all the way around.
A replacement is on the way but not before the nice verizon rep that told me the only way the screen would be loosing adhesiveness, since I did not notice if it was like this from day one, 25 days ago, is humidity or water damage.. Yeah for three weeks I have been watching my mom die, now that is out of the way, i have time to focus on all things thunderbolt... I should be aware of the details of my refurb junk. I am now aware at their discretion they will decide to arbitrarily charge me for something I did not do.  Because adhesives or humans who rebuild these things never fail. Only the user, I guess
Better believe the next one I guess I will need to fine tooth comb it on day one. I was going with the assumption of quality. I was wrong
Rooms to Go does the same thing... We had 3 month old furniture with cushions starting to break down. Did rooms to go say we were sitting on them to hard, maybe they might suggest at 170 pounds I lose some weight as I am 6' 1" and a guy.  No rooms to go replaced 3000 dollars worth of furniture with NEW furniture.  Rooms to go replaced it with a different model, style, etc... since the first did not meet expectations.  They delivered that new set tuesday of this week.
All sarcasm aside, my mother did pass, rooms to go did replace my furniture, and I am waiting to see if I get charged for something I did not do to a defective phone because I did not notice the slight lifting of the screen the day the sub par replacement arrived...
Reading is fundamental and I will only be a verizon customer until this contract expires... There 14 day new replacement policy for sub par equipment is a disservice for the millions of dollars they receive from hard working folks like you and I.
Two companies. One sells 3000 dollar items replaces with no questions. One sells 500 dollar items and continues to make 1500 a year off of thorough recurring billing and gives you junk replacements... Some business model.

  • How is the dust / light leak issues now? New batches?

So its been a little while since the intro of the iPhone 3G. And lots of new batches of iPhones are floating around. I've had problems with 8 phones now with eitehr dust or most recently Light leaking from the left side.
To those who just got their phones within the last week, have you experienced any of these problems?

I swapped out last night at an Apple store for a new phone as I had dust showing up under the screen as described. I've also linked it to a poor seal on the left side of the phone. The first replacement the "genius" brought me had a much bigger gap by the seal and the light leak was apparent even in the store, the second I could not see the leak / gap until I tested it at home in a dark room. So, I expect dust will show up again. The Apples store was out of replacement phones for over a week until yesterday, so either they got a transfer of a batch of defective units from another store or the problem has still not been addressed, which would be unfortunate.
Has anyone found a way to seal up the gap? I tried pressing the seal in place with a thin edge, but it did not help. I'm expecting that a drop of water in there on a rainy day will do far more damage than a speck of dust.

  • Does the iPhone 5 'light leak' affect function?

I just recently received my white iPhone 5, and I have a small light leak near the power button along the bezel. Does this affect the function of the phone, such as the screen brightness? And Would Verizon replace it?

There may be a possibility it could affect the function but not likely. I would call Apple and report it though as they may replace it, Verizon would send you straight to Apple. Being that this is still such a new product they like to capture new products with hardware problems.

  • Screen light leak!!!!!!

    hi there,
i got an iphone 4, and it had replaced once aready about 2 months ago, there is a spot light leak on the bottom of the screen, when i just get it, it not really matter, but now the little spot becomes 'bigger', it is really obvious to see when the turn on and off my phone, that makes me SHOCKED by the "growing" light spot!!!!!
i m wondering if i can get another replaced phone with perfect condition that would not disappoint me again!!!
    cheers

It was bought from the online Apple Store.
I'm just hoping that they'll do something about it; I know that there's some people that damage things themselves and try and return them, and it affects it for people that do have genuine claims like myself.
One thing that pains me is that I got it as a graduation present from my parents, the second is that this is the THIRD iPod that I've had problems with over 2007 and 2008 (half way through last year my 30GB iPod's hard drive failed, it was only seven months old, and earlier this year my 1st generation iPod touch had to be replaced because it kept freezing). I guess I've just had bad luck, because I've always taken absolute care of my iPods...they've always been in cases, never been dropped, never been in a position where they could be damaged.

  • Iphone 5s had white light leaks on lcd after unlocked with touch id

My iphone 5s had white light leaks on lcd after unlocked with touch id. It's a bit confusing because if I unlock with passcode, there's no white light leaks. Does anyone have the same issue? What should I do?

Title: Burst of White Light on iPhone 5S and iPhone 6
    Description:
On unlocking the device with Touch ID a burst of white light is produced from the Top Left/Right corners of the screen.
It happens when more than two folders are created i.e three/four folders each having some applications and the phone is locked while on the same screen.
If no folder or maximum two folders are created then no such burst is produced when unlocking with Touch ID.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Configure Touch ID
    2. Use Black/Dark wallpaper on Home & Lock Screen.
    3. Create minimum four folders either on the home screen or the second having some applications in each.
    4. Being on Home Screen lock the phone.
    5. Unlock with Touch ID and a Burst of White Light will appear on Top Left/Right Corner.
    6. Now move/drag two of the folders to the other second page.
    7. Go back to Home Screen and lock the phone.
    8. Unlock with Touch ID and there is no Burst of White Light.
                        OR
Repeat step 1 and 2 as listed above.
    1. Go to the second screen (after home screen) and create three or four folders with applications in it.
    2. Lock the iPhone while on the same screen.
    3. Unlock with Touch ID and there is a Burst of White Light.
    4. Now drag or remove the folders with only two left.
    5. Lock the iPhone while on the same screen.
    6. Unlock with Touch ID and there is no Burst of White Light.
NOTE: If iPhone is LOCKED and UNLOCKED when on the screen with no folders NO WHITE BURST is there.
    Problem Since:
Burst of White Light when apps added to a folder and unlocked with Touch ID. This is noticed since the update iOS 7.0.6 [11B651]
    Devices:
The burst of light on iPhone 5s is easily recognized but on iPhone 6 its for a fraction of a second. Not checked on iPhone 6+.

  • HELP what is this little red light on the front of my phone?

I know about the 3 sensors on the front of the phone on the top near the ear piece, and the one on the bottom on the right keeps showing a red light. It looks like a small red "C" with a little dot in it. When ever the phone becomes active the light comes on, and stays on for about 10 seconds after locking.
I just today affixed a new screen protector (invisible shield) and just now noticed it happening for the first time. I do work in a dimly lit room but never had this happen before.
What does this light mean and how do I stop it?

Could be a sensor. Or light leaking into the sensor from the screen

  • E52 Keypad Light LEAKS!!

    Hey,
Bought an E52 this week..of many Many keypad light leaks..the one below the Home key's the worst; you can actually see an LED. In low light situations, this actually gets to you.
This picture is from a Lebanese handset reviewed by somebody at Symbian-Guru..its the same in my Indian handset..
Went to a Nokia Care centre where they showed me a spare keypad cover..I turned it around and there's a HOLE in that spot on all E52 keypads!!
If somebody could please explain the logic behind this...?
    Thanks in advance,
    Gopi A.

I suppose it's not just on the E52 then. The light leakage also occurs in the E72 and many have mentioned this flaw, thinking it's only their unit that has this design defect.
In the E72, it has exactly the same light leaking under the Home key. There's also a slighter light leaking beside the left soft-key and also beside the right-soft key. (probably not as bad as the E52 for the light leaks on the sides of the soft-keys).

  • Broken sleep button - repair in northern virginia?

Yesterday morning I dropped my beloved iphone and the top button is jammed. It seemed to work ok but now gets stuck in fits of constant rebooting. Sometimes if I bang it around a little, I can get it to work for a while but it eventually craps back out.
I went to the Apple store in Tysons and the guy said it would cost $270 for a replacement. I know the 3G iphones are coming soon and I don't want to spend anything close to that amount to fix it.
    I have two questions:
    1. Is there any way I can work on the phone myself to get the button working again? At this point the phone is all but dead anyway so I don't mind a little risk.
    2. Is there any repair shop in the Tyson's corner or northern Virginia area that can repair an iphone with this problem for relatively cheap? I saw someone on another forum said its about $30 to fix it locally but I don't know where to begin.
    Any help is appreciated,
    Mike Shea

  • Graphic card & light leak

I'm not sure if it is the graphic card problem but my friend said so.
Sometimes I have lines going acrossing my screen and when that happens I have to move the screen back and forth just to fix it.
My MacBook also has a light leak on my screen, just one tiny spot which annoys me.
Is there a way to fix these problem? I still have my service and support coverage.
If I were to replace the graphic card, will it be covered?
How will they fix my light leak problem?

If you still are covered under warranty or an AppleCare plan that should be covered, assuming you have not damaged the MacBook in some way. Contact Apple at expresslane.apple.com if you are in a country that supports it, or call Apple at the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively, carry your MacBook in to an Apple retail store or authorized service provider to have it looked at.
    Best of luck.

  • Light leak on the screen...

I have a week 38 build...got this on 21 September...i noticed recently that i have very slight light leak on top right corner of the screen...very very faint you cant resly tell unless i point somone...i wonder if its a defect...does it even quilify for replacement?

most lcd with backlighting will have the light leak, but not all of them. If you had a monitor, turn off all the light in the dark and see if you have them. My HP 23 inch widescreen HD monitor also has a light leak on all sides when the screen is black and in the dark room but if I am watching a movie or something then I don't even notice the light leak.
Now If you have it set to full brightness you definitely may notice the light leak. While in a low brightness, you won't notice.
Now if you think it's bothering you then it's your decision to replace it or not.

  • Light leak in camera during flash iphone 4s?

All photos are cloudy when using flash -- there is a light leak.  Does anyone have a solution?

    Micha3l84 wrote:
I got my iPhone 4s a couple months back from 3 and since getting it the camera hasnt worked great. With the flash on I get a white haze on my pics and they don't really seem 8mp quality to me. Will the apple store fix or replace my phone and has anyone else had this problem and if so had a resolution to it?
There are several possible causes for the problem you describe:
You haven't removed the shipping film from the back of the phone
    The lens is dirty
You have a case on the phone that is scattering light from the flash or reflecting it back into the lens
You are too far from the subject (the range of the flash is only about 5 feet).
So remove your case, make sure there is no plastic film over any part of the back, clean the lens and take a bunch of pictures under varying light conditions with subjects at varying distances. If the pictures are still disappointing take the phone to an Apple store for evaluation. Make a genius appointment first (www.apple.com/retail). Don't take it to 3; they don't repair iPhones and don't know anything about them.

  • IPhone 3G Light Leak

Hi, i got my iphone 3G yesterday, and in very low light situations, light leaks out from between the chrome bezel and the screen. The leak is very thin but it is about an inch and a half long; even tho it is thin, it is still very noticable. I checked the web for more information about it and found that it has happened to MANY iPhone 3G owners.
What I want to know, is if Apple is doing anything to fix this problem.
I plan on exchanging my iPhone, but i dont want the new one to also be leaking light.
Does anyone have any idea what Apple is doing to eliminate this problem, or when it would be 'safe' to exchange my phone? (so the new one wouldn't have a light leak)
    -Thanks
(sorry for such a long post)

I went to Apple store tonight (8/21) with light leakage purchased on 7/19 and got a new one real quick. The gentleman that took care of me was nice and he didn't even check to see if what I claimed was true. Real smooth experience.

  • I have light leaking from the right top corner of my iPhone 5.is it a problem or a major thing. Is there anyone, who hasn't got this problem?

I noticed light leaking from the top right corner of my new iPhone 5 from a small area. I noticed first, when I changed the brightness to higher and when I changed back the light was still there.

Personally I would take it to the Apple Store cause the iPhone is still under warranty. You should try your carrier first if your not near an Apple Store and then go from there based on what help or lack of help they provide.
    Best of luck.
