Light levels for editing

When editing photos, especially the exposure, at what level should I set the computer monitor brightness to approximate the print values of the photo? I don't want to confuse the light levels of the printed photo by having the monitor value too high. And I don't want to find out when I buy a photo book that I have all the wrong values.
Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It doesn't matter. The monitor light level affects all of the pixels in the photo whereas adjusting the exposure in iPhoto will change the levels as they relate to the other parts of the photo.
If you increase the level in the monitor the white part of the photo will not wash out as it will do if you increase the exposure within iPhoto.
I just adjust the monitor to a level that's comfortable to my eyes for the viewing conditions.

  • Lighting advice for editing

When using a display and a monitor, what type of lighting is best to use when editing and making graphics in PS for FCP? Is there a particular type of lighting that is recommended for properly illuminating a display to give accurate color info?
    Thanks.

    what type of lighting
tungsten halogen mini spot lights-you can buy a cheap spotlight kit from a DIY store fit them on the ceiling directly above the desk-dont use fluorescent lights -they will cause flickering looking at the screen - many people get headaches with fluorescents anyway
recommended for properly illuminating a display
you don't illuminate the display you illuminate the desk shading the display to prevent reflections
buy an office or an edit desk with a medium grey colour
for very accurate work you can paint the walls white or light grey
there is an IBU spec for grade 1 edit workstation which is along the lines of the above

  • The best RAID level for video editing that has some form of redundancy?

I've been asked to help find the best solution for importing and editing large amounts of HDV (25 Mbit/s) video. However, those whom I am helping also want a level of redundancy that will allow a single drive to fail and their data to be preserved. So what I'm trying to figure out is the best RAID level (or levels) for their need. I'm fairly certain that either 0+1 or 10 is what I'm looking for, however the I/O performance differences between 0+1 and 10 aren't quite clear to me. If someone could explain that to me I would appreciate it. Additionally, if someone knows a better level than either 0+1 or 10 for the needs I described, please don't hesitate to let me know.

The difference between RAID 10 and RAID 0+1 is how the array is created.
RAID 0+1 creates a RAID from multiple RAID 0 arrays that are mirrored.
You can tolerate any number of drive failures in any one side of the mirror (that side of the mirror goes offline as soon as any one disk fails, so it doesn't matter how many other disks fail in the same array), but one drive failure on both parts of the mirror will trash your data.
RAID 10 creates a stripe of multiple RAID 1 mirrors.
In this setup you create RAID 1 mirror sets and stripe them together.
In this setup you can tolerate one disk failure in each element of the stripe.
For example if you have 6 drives you might create three mirrors of two drives each, and each mirror is then striped.
You can lose one drive in each mirror, but if you lose two drives in any mirror set, you're out of luck.
In both cases, though, you're not going to get the best usage out of the array since mirroring has a 50% overhead - meaning you're only going to get 50% of your total disk capacity as usable space.
With the XServe RAID, the RAID 5 performance is very good - good enough for your 25MB/sec throughput so I'd go with RAID 5 arrays, not RAID 0 or 1 on the XServe RAID itself.
Then, depending on your space requirements, you can either stripe or mirror them together for a RAID 50 or 51 array. In this way you gain the data redundancy of RAID 5 with better disk utilization than 10 or 0+1.
RAID 50 will give you the best performance (and the most usable space), RAID 51 will give you the best redundancy.
At the end of the day it's up to you to decide which format to use based on performance and usable space requirements.

  • FAST FOOD FOR EDITING

when i get into working on stuff I really hate stopping and doing other things ...unless I'm waiting for some process to get done ( eg. export etc ).
So when I am on computer working I get sucked into it and dont like to stop even to eat etc.
I have discovered that fast food is the answer.
even better...get on phone and order food delivered !
but other than that I've discovered you can enhance frozen food TV dinner things or soups...pretty quick and is really good...
    1) get stouffers (sp?) fetticinii alfredo...nuke...( 2 min ? ) and add can of tuna ( mix it in..) yum...instant tuna casserole !
    2) get progressive new engl clam chowder.. heat up... add can of chopped or minced clams...heat a min longer....way better !
( add red pepper or whatever ).
whats YOUR secret editing fast food solutions ???

darnit.. i was writing email to my state senator and missed the crab story.. what happened ? can we eat them ?
yum... i ate some crab cakes for breakfast this morning... from icelandic or something like that... microwave on high for 2 minutes covered... the perfect fast food for editing...add cocktail sauce.
cock and tail .... sauce... appeals to most people on a subliminal level .... IMO...
for me its the tail part.. but hey, friday is gay day in the film biz ...( IMO ) and mayor bloomberg tends to prove it 7 days a week !
no offense.. my best friend is gay
just kidding but it could be true
how would i know anyway? maybe i havent met the right wife yet.. 3 down but there are many fishes in the sea.... any chics feeling adventurous out there ??
    edit... true story :
I was working on set of some stupid tv cop show ( i think it was law and order at chelsea piers but forget ) and sitting at a big 'conference table' with other crew members during a take. after the take we had to move to the room we were sitting in to shoot, and to do that we had to lower some bay lights etc which were above the big table .. so the room had to be cleared of people to do that ( dont wanna drop stuff on people etc ).
Soooo, the subject of this " new " movie ( brokeback mountain ) got brought up by some *** hags sitting at the table... chics who love gay guys in general for the spirit of the thing.. ( this is hollywood so theres no figuring out why this is true ) .. and one asked ME if I was gonna go watch the movie. Like go to a theater and watch this new movie.  This is starring the guy who killed himself like a week ago.... and everyone was sorta talking about this great new movie and the dead guy.
Being a grip etc.. and pretty old ... I looked at this young woman and there musta been something in my countenance that sobered her up or something...cause she looked away and giggled and changed the subject and then got out of the room when I said, " We're gonna lower the bay light, get out of the room ".
I never saw her again. The dead guy is still dead. The gay movie about cowboys is still a blockbuster. Life goes on , eh ?

I don't know of a native way to do this in xfce... though admittedly it has been a while since I have used any DE.  I typically use a pretty consistent brightness level though, so I just made a udev rule that waits for proper /sys path to show up and then sets the appropriate value. Here is what I have (though it is probably not going to be exactly the same):
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="acpi_video0", SUBSYSTEM=="backlight", DRIVERS=="i915", ATTR{brightness}="4"
On the udev wiki page, there is a link in there to getting started using udev rules.  It is somewhat old, but everything about it still applies (since it is just the basics) with one exception.  The command is now udevadm.
As an alternative, you can use Xyne's relight.  I have not tried this myself, but it basically just writes the value of your brightness on shutdown and reapplies it the next boot.  I would imagine that this could probably be done with a couple quick and easy systemd.service files as well.  I think you could just model them somewhat after alsa-store.service and alsa-restore.service in terms of Wants, After's, Before's, etc.
Thanks! But it seems a systemd's bug like 65kid said, I would rather wait for it's fix

  • "Error 7 occurred at Invoke Node..." when attempting to open .vi for editing

I am attempting to open a vi for editing, and instead the vi is attempting to execute.  I get the error:
"Error 7 occurred at Invoke Node in BuildTargetBuildSpecification.vi->BuildXFS.vi"
Possible reason(s):   LabVIEW:  File not found. The file might have been moved or deleted, or the file path might be incorrectly formatted for the operating system. For example, use \ as path separators on Windows, : on Mac OS, and / on Linux. Verify that the path is correct using the command prompt or file explorer.
    Method Name: Project: Open
When I close the Error Message dialog, Labview terminates.

    Hi R.Jay,
Error 7 generally occurs when trying to create an executable when there is an extra instance of a top-level vi.  You may need to remove the file as a support file (but leave it as the top level vi).
Are you trying to run an executable that has already been created?  Unless you have already built an executable, it should not automatically run when opened.  Also, was it built in a previous version of LabVIEW?  Sometimes this error can be seen when you upgrade to a newer version without compiling.

  • Logical level for logical fact table sources

it is clear that for fact aggregates, we should use the Content tab of the Logical Table Source dialog to assign the correct logical level to each dimension.
question is : is it mandatory to assign even for non-aggregates fact tables the logical level for each dimension (which normally should be set to the most detailed level of each dimension) ? is it any known issue if "logical levels"in content tab are not set ?
the reason I'm asking this is a strange bug I have (I'm not going to discuss it here) and then only workaround seems to be NOT setting the logical levels (on content tab) for logical fact table sources.
    thank you !

If levels are not set: By default levels are considered as lowest level
It should not matter if you set or not
Generally we set for facts explicitly when we are using Aggregate tables.
Your current issue might be a case by case; I would suggest to check implicit fact, any table mapped to the source to force a join etc
    Mark if helps

  • Specs for editing on MacBook Pro.

Just got CS6. My old MacBook isn't up to the task of editing HD with it. (I used to use Final Cut Pro 6 with little problem). I'm considering getting a new MacBook.
Anybody else editing on a MacBook? What do I need to make it run smoothly, and not have to render all the time. (Edting on a desktop isn't an option at the moment).

    Hi,
If you want a solution that can get the job done, but not an extreme pro level, you could try proxy editing/offline editing.
(Pasted from another reply I made to another similar topic.)
I keep checking out these forums from time to time and there has been a rapidly rising trend for people asking more and more about editing on laptops. I myself posted in the past quite a bit since I also needed a laptop. The very fact that they are considering laptops for editing and not going for more powerful AND cheaper desktop alternatives means that they need systems that are not going to be used for very heavy duty editing and for general usage as well, and a laptop is ideal due to comfort using it for general computing.
I have also personally met and seen people who have configured systems with nVidia non-supported cards WITHOUT the hack and are more than happy not knowing whats going on and that their card has never really been used by premiere without the file modification.
However, even RED4k footage can be (theoretically) edited EFFECTIVELY on a minimum requirement PC if the experts here start recommending people how to do proxy/offline edits. Even for the extremely non-technical folks, there are youtube links with easy to understand directions on how to do that.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4290664?tstart=0
    http://www.homedvd.ca/2010/12/19/offline-hd-proxy-editing-at-work/
    http://helpx.adobe.com/speedgrade/using/proxy-files.html
I will post links later as do not have access to youtube now, or anyone can simply search for 'proxy edit' or 'offline edit' on youtube.
People with even terrible systems with 1 hdd and 4 gigs ram can merrily hack away at footage without much worries. Yes, there will be a few additional steps and time required, but they can still pull off something acceptable this way.
Another thing, there are caddys on ebay for $10 that swap out the optical drives of the laptops with an internal enclosure which allows another harddisk to be added. I am using this myself on a lenovo W520 and have 2 7200 RPM harddrives. I can even add in a 3rd MSATA SSD drive as this laptop allows that (you can even order one from lenovo with RAID already installed and 2 drives).
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=w520+cadd y&_sacat=0&_from=R40
Therefore, yes, I do believe that it is possible to edit just about anything (save very high bitrate footage that needs to be done quickly) on just about anything (if the transcoding time and disk space are available).
I once again wish to clarify that the above is geared towards non-professionaly like myself (or even for professionals having a really bad day) but this technique can become even more effective if intel's Quicksync transcoding engine is used, which is the fastest at video transcoding at this time. (have not checked this out myself yet)
I hope this was helpful. I would be more than happy for any criticism and advice from the experts here because I learnt a lot through them and hope to learn more.
    Cheers.

  • Optimal summarization levels for CO-PA

    Hi,
is there any guide or SAP Note how to optimal set the summarization levels for CO-PA?
E.g., how many characteristics should a summarization level contain or how many keydata records is maximum for a summarization level?
    Thanks in advance

    Peter

    Thanks for reply Pradeep,
unfortunatelly I have not found the information I need.
Does anybody know some other source?
The question is: what is the maximum size of an summarization level (in MB)?
Because if we add more and more characteristics to a summarization level, the amount of keytable records rises and the the summatization level losses its purpose.
Within the OSS 83204 (file h83204en.doc) there is a smatement, that a summarization level is considered as big, if its size is more than 20MB...this is nonsense, our summarization levels are bigger than 1GB. Is there any newer version of the manual to the summ.levels?
    Thanks

  • Dreamweaver freezes whendownloading a page for editing.

When I try to download a pagein DW for editing from my website, DW will not display the page. It indicates that all the essential files are downloading, but when it get to the place where I would expect to get a display of the page in design view, it just spins. The only thing I can do then is force close the program. Help! The website is www.enonumc.com

    Hi Dennis -
I notice a few anomalies in your code which may be relevant.
In several places you have links to targets which are one level above the root folder on your server.
(wherever the link path starts with ../ )
Most hosts will not allow access to folders and files above the server root, so perhaps your FTP transfer is stalling DW in the attempt to access these files
For instance on your home page:
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="../enonumc.css" type="text/css" />
    <script src="../Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">

    var MenuBar1 = new Spry.Widget.MenuBar("MenuBar1", {imgDown:"../LoveGrowsHere/images/SpryMenuBarDownHover.gif", imgRight:"../LoveGrowsHere/images/SpryMenuBarRightHover.gif"});
    //-->

  • IPhone display lights up for half a second...

My new iPhone 4 does the same my old iPhone 3GS did. Sometimes when I push the slepp/wake button to wake it up, the display lights up for half a second and goes dark again. This always happens twice. Only when I push it the third time, the display stays on. Since it's a brand new iPhone 4 and the old iPhone 3GS did the same, it must be software related. I've had it with iOS 4.2.1 and iOS 4.3. Does anyone know this phenomenon too?

I get that occasionally. I've always assumed it was to do with the proxy sensor and the location of my paws on the device at the time. It's not consistent and rare occurrence.
Also, i use the Otterbox cover for it. I think it's design allows buildup of dust on the proxy and also could be contributing to the same theoretical cause.

  • Export for editing Question...

Are exported images already linked in the library, or do I have reimport the finished image back in?
The problem I have is I will export a RAW file into Photoshop as a 16 bit Tiff, do my first level of edits, then move into 8bit to finish up. Then I save that file into the fodler the original RAW is stored in. When I go to import the Tiff, it tells me it cannot as there is already a RAW file with that name. But, if I export it to a different folder and save my edits there, I can import the file in, but I am not able to stack it with the original RAW.
Should I be exporting to the same folder the original RAW resides?
    Thanks for any help...

Allen, just do "Edit in Photoshop" and then when you're done in Photoshop, do File-Save and close Photoshop. Your edits will be in Lightroom.
What happens behind the scenes is that LR makes a new file as soon as you choose the "Edit in Photoshop" command and adds it to the Library. When you save in Photoshop, you're simply updating that file. Since it's already in LR, there is no need to "get it back" into LR.

  • Selecting the Planning Level for Statistical Forecast in S&OP on HANA

    Hello together,
we currently face an issue regarding the statistical forecast in S&OP on HANA:
The customer wants to implement an S&OP process containing the two steps statistical forecast (automatically calculated) and sales forecast (manually determined). The planning level of the statistical forecast should be higher than the planning level of the sales forecast, i.e. the statistical forecast is calculated on a higher planning level and then disaggregated to be an input for the manually determined sales forecast.
Since it doesn't seem to be possible to disaggregate any key figure below its base planning level we need to have the lower sales planning level as base planning level in all key figures, including the input and output key figures of the statistical forecast.
When running a statistical forecast with a defined forecasting profile, the planning level used for the forecast seems to be the base planning level of the input/output key figures defined in the forecasting profile.
However, we need to define a higher planning level for the statistical forecast in order to have a better data base for recognizing trends and sesonality. In APO DP it is possible to define the planning level for the forecast when running/scheduling the forecasting job. Is this also possible in S&OP on HANA? Can we define the planning level for the forecast in the forecasting profile or when running the forecast from the Excel AddIn? I tried to use the field "Filter" in the forecasting profile as it listed all the planning levels (as well as a lot of other things, we don't know where they come from), but the forecast was still carried out on the base planning level.
Do you have any other idea where to define the forecasting planning level that is different from the base planning level of the input/output key figures?
    Thank you in advance,
    Jonathan

    Hi Bert,
thank you for your fast answer. I checked the forum again and found this post:
    Question about Statistical Forecast
However, I don't really get how the disaggregation is meant to work; the suggestion seems to be to calculate a forecast on an aggregated level, i.e. with input and output key figure with an aggregated base planning level, and then disaggregate it "somehow".
Do you have any idea how this disaggregation might work and what other steps I have to consider?
It seems as if I'd have to define a whole bunch of new key figures and have more than one output key figure but no input key figure for the statistical forecast, which doesn't make sense in my eyes.
Actually I was looking for a solution where I can define my forecasting profile with both input and output key figure on the lower planning level and then insert the level I want the forecast to be done at either in the profile as well, or even more flexible when running or scheduling a forecast. Defining more key figures any time I need another forecasting level does not appear very comfortable. Is it meant to be like that or is there another way to reach the goal mentioned above?
    Cheers,
    Jonathan
Edit: The mentioned thread contains some valuable information on how to disaggregate key figures. However, the really tricky decision is how to define the disaggregation ratio.
