Light painting with Quartz Composer

How can I create a light paint effect with Quartz Composer? Which patches do I have to use?
Thank you in advance,
Steffen

Well, after some digging, I found that it's nothing more than a large image that gets imported. The trick is, and what I still need help with, is creating the camera movements...and even more challenging is the hand held wobble that is subtle enough to add a really nice effect to the whole movie.

  • Screensaver crashing when made with Quartz Composer using Asynchronous Mode?

Hi all, I made a screensaver using video in Quartz Composer but the playback was choppy. I went into settings and used Asynchronous Mode, which sorted this out. It was running fine at first. Runs well in viewer and runs when I select test screensaver. I powered the mac up this morning and any of the screensavers using Asynchronous Mode they start for a second and then the screensaver stops suddenly. Again they work fine whilst test screensaver button is used and in the QC viewer but suddenly not when I use hot corners or when the Screensaver activates???
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

I downloaded his pre-built version and fiddled with it a bit, putting in a .mov file. The saver crashed System Prefs. Discovered that the quartz composition would only open in QT7, not QTX. I tried a quartz composition that did not have a movie in it, and that worked as a screen saver. I tried the movie saver, replaced the movie with one that did open in QTX, which would work in the Finder and QuickLook, although it ran only in QT7 (as do all my old qtz compostions), but it still crashed System Prefs. Unfortunately I haven't installed Developer Tools for Snow Leopard, so don't know if you could get it to work using the latest iteration of Quartz Composer and rebuilding the composition there--don't even know if there is a new Quartz Composer.
I suspect there is a problem between 32bit and 64bit things, although exactly what that might be I don't know, since the straight qtz compositions, without a movie, seem to work in screen saver mode.
Using the QT7 only movie produced a slightly different crash report than using the QTX compatible movie. I have seen other reports of non-Apple screen savers that will not run in Snow Leopard, with the statement that the savers must be re-compiled to work in 64bit. My quess is that really simple quartz compositions use the quartz engine available in Snow Leopard, and thus even though built with a 32bit Quartz Composer do run as 64bit, by calling only Snow Leopard functions, and thus will work, but that the movie saver has something inherently 32bit in it and so causes a conflict.

  • Quartz Composer issues

    Hello everyone,
I created screensavers with Quartz Composer last week and they worked perfectly. For more safety, I tested them on 2 other macs dealing with Snow Leopard (mine having Lion) and it was ok too. But today they aren't usable anymore on either of them. I created them again (the exact same way I did last week) and now they work but only on my computer. Do they have a validity duration?
Moreover, I wanted to use them on another macbook but the files don't seem to contain the source images. When I look at the file's information, the weight is 32 ko which seems very light. How can I attach the source images directly within the screensaver and not on a file aside?
    Thank you for your help!
    Mélie.

I have it running  on 10.9.2, what version of QC do you have? I have 4.6

  • How can I use multiple cameras in Quartz Composer?

Good morning, all. This is a quartz composer question, but I can't see a quartz-composer specific forum to ask it...
As part of a school project at ACAD we are building a rig to record the output from three video cameras to build a panoramic video. I have played with Quartz Composer to do the melding of videos recorded with this setup into a single image, and it worked very well.
However, to do so live is the intention for this project as well, so we can build the composite video for recording (the timing of three different cameras is a bit awkward) as well as line up the cameras without having to do so separately.
In Quartz Composer, however, the video-in plugin only reads the camera model number, not the unique GUID as seen in the System Profiler, so three identical cameras will not be read properly... you can only choose the model number, not the specific id of the camera.
Is this a bug in Quartz Composer? Is there some top-secret plugin that is hiding somewhere that will allow you to choose the individual camera id's as seen in the system profiler? (Cameras tested have been firewire handycams streamed live, and usb cameras. identical model numbers can't be chosen as individual cameras properly)
Thanks muchly, and please shuffle this question to the proper forum as necessary.

I am working on a project where I need the same functionality. But even though I'm using different webcams, and can clearly select them in the menu, still only one camera works at a time. Even if I run two separate patches, with two different camera inputs, only one of them works.
If you find any solution to this problem, I would really appreciate if you could share it.

  • Issues with quartz screensavers' screencapture.

I started messing around with quartz composer when Tiger came out, and I've made a wide variety of screensavers since. One of the new features in leopard is the ability to take a screenshot the moment the screensaver activates. This allows you to make a nice transition from the current screen to your screensaver, however, if you use a password to unlock your computer upon wake, this image is only solid black. I'm guessing this is a security feature, but I would like to be able to use this image feature and a password lock at the same time. Is this possible?
Also, if someone has posted this before I am very sorry, I searched around both in the discussions and in general online but got no answers.

    Just as an update...
I have deleted the iLife applications form /Applications, installed iLife '08 excluding iMovie, downloaded the free iMovie '06 installer from Apple, installed it and tried the same process again of launching iMovie and importing a JPEG. The same two errors still exist

  • Quartz composer and shake

Lets get out the most important detail-- I'm very new to shake.
I like to use quartz composer to create backgrounds. When I try to bring in a quicktime movie I've created with Quartz Composer I only get the first frame of the movie then... black. My question is, is it possible to use a quicktime movie created in quartz composer in shake?
thanks for any ideas and input you have

Try FxFactory instead, its a much more advanced product and version 2 gives you access to the camera data in Motion.
    http://www.noiseindustries.com/support/fxfactoryupdates/files/fxfactory_201.html
So if you can do the maths, you could easily write your own plugin that would be able to orientate an object within a plane as you suggest.
And as I used FxF to write Volumetrix, I have to add the disclaimer

  • I am having trouble with iTunes (possible Quartz Composer Visualizer problem) but have no idea how to fix it.

I tried to use my iTunes but the icon didn't show up and instead I get a folder. The folder is titled TunesApp and in it is another folder called Contents. Contents contains: _CodeSignature, Frameworks, Info.plist, MacOS, PkgInfo, Resources, and version.plist. In the folder MacOS is my iTunes and I can use it, but I get this message:

I can only use my iTunes as long as I keep the message open. When I close the message it tells me: "Closing this window will terminate the running processes: login, bash, iTunes." I have no idea what is going on with it as it was working not too long ago. I do not think I updated it recently but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you!

Sounds like your computer is having additional issues.  I suggest taking it to your nearest Apple Store.

  • Quartz Composer 4.6 Crash

I installed xcode 4.5.2 today in hopes of getting quartz composer 4.6 running on my macbook pro 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 duo with 4 GB of ram, unfortunatly the efforts were to no avail. I was previously running QC 3.1.2 before that and it is still running fine.
At first QC 4.6 would not open at all and I was geting the following error seen in the attached image. I followed previous posts that instructed to delete com.apple.QuartzComposer.editor.plist and Cahe.db. This allowed me to start accessing the application but not through selecting the template .qtz that are offered when starting a new file such as the second screen shot. I have to open a composition that I have created previously, this leads me to believe that it is not pointing towards the template .qtz at startup.
When I do open a previously made composition QC runs but will again crash when I try to access the patch library. also if I switch the preferences to start with the patch library open the QC will not make it to the the editor screen.
I was trying to get a crash report but the app seems to not be filing crash reports right now for some reason. I'll try to get it to generate one but maybe this is enough to turn on the lights for someone.

Thanks Frank for your help. I am using Lion 10.7.5
In doing this I realized Kineme 3-d needed updated. My test user got an error that Kineme 3-d was crashing QC. After I updated that went away and I started having the same problems as in my primary user account.
When QC 4.6 starts and I click on the blank, screensaver or any other start template I get the info in the attached screenshot. If I open a past composition QC fails when trying and open the patch library see the beggining of an error report below.

  • Keynote and Quartz Composer

I am fairly new to Quartz Composer, that being said I have built several animations that I want to add to Keynote presentations, but everytime I try to add them into Keynote they only last :30 sec.  I have tried exporting as a .mov file and each time I do I am prompted to give the file an end time, I have tried several different times, and yet Keynote still gives it a :30 sec runtime.  I have looked at the exported file in Quicktime and it also says the file is only :30 sec.  I have been searching forums for some time now with no luck, but I have found that I am not the only one with this problem.
How can I get the QC file to last longer than :30 sec?  Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated as this is really starting to wear on me.  Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions, agentdavo.
I don't think it is. I tried the same thing (to try to get around QuickTime's 3 second limitation) and Keynote isn't allowing access to the video hardware.

  • How do I install Quartz Composer on my imac 7-27"??

I am trying to get into Quartz Composer and I am very confsed since imac 7-27' doesn't come with a cd-instal anymore. I tried to do online, installing xcode 4 from the apple site, but at some point it says that i never used itunes store and ask me for my billing details...it's confusing since Quartz Composer is a free aplication. Any ideas on how to dwonload this. On SnowLeopard you can do it through your instal cd, But how to do it in Lion????
    Much appreciated!!

You need to provide billing information to DL from the App Store, whether or not you buy anything. That's the only way to get anything, including free stuff, from the App Store.

  • Burn tool effect still happens when painting with low opacity/flow

i posted this before, and it wasnt resolved. i figured i'd wait for an update for it to be fixed. i'm using a samsung galaxy note 10.1, and i just downloaded the 14.2 andrioid update, and the problem still occurs. please fix this issue. photoshop touch could be the most useful app i own, but, as it is, it is completely unusable for me. when will the next update happen, and will it attempt to fix the brush opacity/ flow burn issue? The more time the paint brush remains unusable, the less familiar i become with photoshop, and the more familiar i become with autodesk sketchbook. I want to like photoshop better, but for now i just could not recommend it to anyone seeking to use it for digital painting.
the dark spots on this image were made without any change in my brush color. i simply made a lighter touch, with the pressure related opacity control on.

So, I realize I'm answering my own post, but just in case anybody else has this issue, this might be helpful. Tonight, I went into task manager (using a galaxy note 10.1...which, in turn, is running on android 4.0.4), touched the RAM manager tab, and pressed the "clear ram" button. i started up photoshop, opened a project that's been pending for some time, and the burn effect was no longer happening. At very least, it was no longer happening at a very noticeable level. So that's my solution. Clear your RAM every time you're about to open Photoshop.

  • Quartz Composer files presented as QT movies

    Dear All,
I have discovered the Quartz Composer in the Dev tools and have been having great fun using it. However, when I insert the QTZ file into keynote (i am using keynote 3 and tiger 10.4.4) it plays as a quicktime file with reduced resolution.. very annoying. Is there anyway of rectifying this? I've also tried linking to the qtz file as a hyperlink but as you know keynote won't let me.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Conor

Are you setting Keynote to enlarge the slideshow to fill the screen? If so, then that may be why your .qtz files look blocky around the edges. Try turning that option off to see if it enhances their look any.
    EDIT:
Just tried that and it doesn't work like that. It appears that if you want it to show up looking as good in Keynote as it does in Quartz Composer, then you'll have to use it at the same resolution it's used in Quartz Composer. Enlarging in Keynote will make it blocky, enlarging in QTZC then dropping it into Keynote will make it show properly.

Quartz Composer wasn't built correctly, it needs you to install Xcode into /Developer (the default). If you install it anywhere else, it'll crash with the log you mention.
You can fix it with the following command (in Terminal)
    installnametool -rpath /Developer/Library/PrivateFrameworks "<your install path>/Library/PrivateFrameworks" "<your install path>/Applications/Quartz Composer.app/Contents/MacOS/Quartz Composer"
    In Nathan's case, <your install path> is "/Users/nathanbriggs/Developer".

  • Where's the best place to find Quartz Composer experts? (looking for a developer)

I'm looking for a Quartz Composer developer who is 1) interested in working with an artist and 2) can give me a quote for a specific project I am developing.

Apple hosts a bunch of mailing lists, one of which is for Quartz Composer devs. I read the list occasionally but have never really had the time to become proficient with QC.
Start here for general info about Apple's mailing lists:   http://lists.apple.com/
Then click the "Lists hosted on this site" link to see all the various lists. You'll have to subscribe to quartzcomposer-dev in order to post your questions to the list.
The list is intended for technical discussions related to development and not really for job solicitation. But the usual folks on the list seem relatively friendly for the most part so I expect if you asked nicely and took any negotiations off-line that you wouldn't receive any flak.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, magneticpitch!
I can't help you with your question, but I'd like to make a suggestion about using Discussions. In general, it is best to ask your question in only one forum at a time. That way all the answers are in one place, and it is easier for people trying to help to see what has already been suggested. If after a few days, you haven't gotten help in the one place you asked, it is appropriate to ask in another forum.
    Good luck.
