Lightdm and KDE shutdown, restart

I use KDE and want to use fingerprint-gui to login. This isn't possible with kdm, so I ended up with lighdm. Login with fingerprint reader works, but with lightdm shutdown and restart buttons disappears from menu. After playing with lightdm from AUR, patches from fedora and another hints from internet I found solution.
To get shutdown and restart buttons back you only need lightdm from community and consolekit-git from AUR.
It would be useful to write a hint to package, but since consolekit is from AUR and deprecated, I don't know if it is good solution.
Is there better solution to this problem?

I found a better solution at the lightdm page on the wiki. All it requires is polkit from extra. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … ff_etc..29

If a server supports resuming downloads then the download should continue where it left off.<br />
You can test that by simple starting a large download and wait a minute or so before pausing it.<br />
Then you can close and restart Firefox and see if resuming works.
You can set the pref browser.download.manager.quitBehavior to 2 on the about:config page.<br />
That will make Firefox ask for confirmation if you want to cancel the download if you close Firefox.
    See:

Make sure you quit all your applications before shutting down.
    And try resetting the SMC.

  • Leopard and PowerBook G4 Shutdown, Restart, etc.

If I've been using my computer for a while (a day or so), I find it almost impossible to shutdown, restart, or logout of the computer. It will close one application then timeout saying that it couldn't close the program (although it's not running). If no program is running, it will quit Finder but do nothing else (just shows my background). I can relaunch the Finder and continue to work normally and shutdown via the terminal (sudo shutdown). However, this is not very handy when trying to install an update (Keychain update specifically). It keeps saying it's not installed so I assume I have to restart through OS X.
If it matters, I often put the computer to sleep as I go to class. I'm not positive if this matter because I haven't been able to keep it awake for over a day yet to see. Also, sometimes my Google Notifier refuses to recognize an Internet connection or just shows the same amount of msgs even though I'm getting more. Again, not sure if this has anything to do with it but I have turned it off and I still have the problem. The install of Leopard was also an Update rather than a complete clean install.
    Thanks.

I am having a similar problem where, when I tell it to restart or shutdown, it removes all the icons and shuts down all the programs, but leaves the Dock still in place and an empty screen and sits there. I can only shut down by powering off. I didn't try sudo shutdown, but I will try that next time. But is there something else to be done besides using the terminal?

  • {Solved} Windows 8.1 Doesn't show users when windows loads, only shows options for accessibility and shutdown/restart

I just recently come into a problem on a dell all-in-one, where the computer has been updated to windows 8.1 and doesn't show users, only a blue screen with the power options and accessibility options and here is how I fixed it.
Note: you will lose your desktop apps
    1. Turn on computer and let load to the blue screen with the options
    2. While holding down shift click on the power button and then click restart (while still holding shift)
    3. Hold shift until the advanced recovery options comes up
    4. click on Troubleshoot>Refresh your PC
    5.Enter password for user account
    6. Let it do its magic

All 3 java stack instances go down at the same time on either server inconsistently with the following error in dev_jcontrol where the java jlaunch processes do not start up again....

  • KDE shutdown/reboot issue

I've had this issue for ages, hope I can explain it clearly enough.  Two people use my computer, when both are logged in, and the person who logged in first logs out, then the second person tries to restart or shut down, it doesn't work properly.  It just shows a flashing cursor, but if the person manually switches to vt1 the shutdown/restart continues as normal.  It's not a major deal just annoying.  Had the issue with KDE 4.6 and it continues with 4.7.  KDE starts via inittab.

I've managed to reproduce this in virtualbox, anyone care to shed any light before I attempt a bug report?

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.2 shutdown/restart button as menu options

    hi there.
i have recently add gnome as gui and i have difficulty finding how to add the buttons shutdown/restart at the top right position where logout is right now.
for the moment to shutdown or restart i have to either logout and do it from there (if it doesn't freeze, sometimes does that) or open console and shutdown or reboot from there.
can anyone help with this matter?
    thank you in advanced.

  • Where is the shutdown/restart buttons from the logout dialog

After I followed the almost all postinstall in Howto(s) from Archlinux Wiki, I lost the shutdown/restart buttons from the logout dialog box.
    Where are they?
    I set in the kcontrol:
KDE Components -> Session Manager -> General (Offer shutdown options) and Default Shutdown Option (Turn off computer)
    has no effect.
Could someone give me a hint?
    Thanks.

    Yep, it works.
    Remove
    export DISPLAY=localhost:0
I did not read it carefully
    I put
    xhost+ localhost
    export DISPLAY=localhost:0
    together in my user .bash_profile
    I should split this:
    xhost+ localhost
    in my user .bash_profile
    and
    export DISPLAY=localhost:0
    in my root's .xinitrc
    That should do the job.

  • Snow Leopard - very slow restart / reboot and Boot Camp restart fail

    Hi
After Snow Leopard installation on my Macbook Pro I have a very slow restart. I logged this immediately after install and waited till 10.6.1 was issued and installed but still have the same problems. Hope some one can help.
For an normal restart or reboot I have the grey screen for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for about 2 mins 30 secs before loading desktop. This is longer than Leopard and clearly not what Snow Leopard is meant to be. I have installed on an iMac as well and can see the new normal fast boot.
I also have Windows on it's own partition and use in Boot Camp. I have used this successfully under Leopard.
When I restart from Windows using the Start button and restart, Windows shuts down and then the mac starts up but gets stuck indefinitely on the blue screen. I have waited up to 25 mins then forced a shut down.
However if I restart from Windows using the Boot Camp icon in the taskbar and choose the restart from MacOSX it shuts down windows and restarts the mac in record time!! about 25 secs grey screen and 25 secs blue screen. I can't get this in normal mac mode! - Bizarre.
I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, run Tech Tool, Onyx, reset PRAM, deleted startup items plists and removed startup items from System Preferences Account.
I have monitored the Console app for all the startup conditions noted above and will post below. In the logs of the normal mac reboot you can see something to do with Security Agent taking over 2 mins to load. Maybe that is a clue, but I don't understand these messages. Please note that the iStatsmenu app was installed after snow leopard and I had these slow startups before it's installation.
If anyone technical can understand what the **** is going on here I would really appreciate your feedback.
    Regards
    Eric

    Hi guys
Thanks for your contributions. I have made little progress on this issue since posting.
Just as added info, I did a re-install of Snow leopard from install DVD and upgrade again to 10.6.1 and no change to the startup behaviours. Same pattern as before, although the first restart was fast and probably how it is meant to be, then the slow ones reappeared.
I also had a thought that somehow it may be related to the nominated startup disk. There were posts on other boards about similar issues with Leopard where the hanging start was found to be related to the computer not knowing which startup disk to use. I thought maybe as it works when using the boot camp icon from Windows but not the restart button, it may be related, but in OSX and Windows both are set to startup in OSX on HD. So no further joy.
Maybe someone else will come along who can understand the Console logs. Why does the loginwindow and Security Agent take so long?
Do you guys have any clues from your Console system logs? Does yours hang on loginwindow?
The fact that there are so few people with the same problem suggests to me that there is a third party device/preference/ hidden file somewhere that is having an effect and it's not an Apple issue.
I am getting close to wiping the hard drive and starting again....but live in hope.
    Cheers

  • [solved] Issue with conky and Kde 4

I have a small issue with conky and KDE 4.2. I start conky with a script which I stored under ~/.kde/Autostart. The script is simple and looks like this..
    conky -c ~/.conkyrc_kde4
This works fine. But when I restart the first KDE and check with ps, I have 2 instances of conky running. The instances keep on growing with the number of restarts.
I think kde tries to restart all the apps which were running when the session was terminated. Is there a way to change this behavior in general or all the programs or for only a specific program like conky ?

    I did
Systemsettings > Advanced > Session Manager > Start with an empty session
and put everything you want in Autostart

  • Import of photos is not working. Moreover 'photos' app is not getting closed, it says 'closing all libraries'. Even it is stopping shutdown/restart of my mac.

Next time you open the photos application hold down both of the keys suggested and then launch the application in the usual way. If you do this you will be presented with the opportunity to repair your library.

  • Slow shutdown, restart, logout on MBP retina 10.9.3

I have been unable to shutdown or restart my MBP mid 2012 retina (2.6 GHz Intel Core i70, other than by holding down the power button.  I've tried, I think, almost all suggestions on this forum (safe mode, restore, repair permissions reset PVRAM. etc).  I finally got it to shutdown regularly by eliminating all Divx software on my computer (no easy task), but shutdowns and restarts still hang an unusually long time, about 15 seconds.
It was suggested I send console information just before my last BOOT_TIME to see if any process in the time after restart command and boot would give any hints.  Here are the entries, and there appear to be some problems but I cannot interpret them.  I have an external WD passport drive connected (which I can eject before restarting with no noticeable effect, and a USB hub, which I also disconnect to no effect).  Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.  I am about to give up...  I would like not to have to re-install the system software..  Thanks for any help!

  • Time Machine:  When it's backing up, can't open new apps/shutdown/restart

Running Snow Leopard. I just did a MS Office 2008 Service pack 3 upgrade. And noticed that while Time Machine is backing up, I can no longer open any new apps or shutdown/restart the macbook. Nothing responds anymore.
Related issued: If it's been sleeping, I can't type anything to unlock my computer.
In either situation, I have to hold down the power button to shut down and restart. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

i have big problem i make update to my software  iso 7.12 in my iphone 4  but when i recive calling  and i want to cancel and recall again i phone is stop no working and i must restart it to work what can i do

Basic Troubleshooting Steps when all else fails
    - Quit the App by opening multi-tasking bar, and swiping the App upward to make it disappear.  (For iOS 6 older, hold down the icon for the App for about 3-5 seconds, and then tap the red circle with the white minus sign.)
    - Relaunch the App and try again.
    - Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    - Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    - Reset All Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)
    - Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    - Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
    - Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.
