Lightening Images/Photos in InDesign

Can someone help me how to lighten images (.gif) that I have dragged and dropped into InDesign (CS5) - when the finished product is printed, some images are too dark?

correct me if I am wrong, but TIFF doesn't allow clear cut images (just a box) and GIF is clear cut images
Not sure what you mean by TIFF doesn't allow clear cut images?! The image types you describe are very different from one another. In a print environment, TIFF, PSD and high res JPEGs can be used. GIF and PNG are web images and are not suitable for high quality printing.
Any images you place in your brochure should be edited in Photoshop, saved in a suitable format and placed into InDesign. The images 'effective' ppi should be 300 at print size. GIF will not achieve that.

I can't place images from Photos into InDesign since updating to Yosemite 10.10.3. Is this an Apple issue or an Adobe one? It used to be a simple process with iPhoto but not anymore.

Thanks Steve. I should have mentioned that I’m still using CS6. Wonder if that’s the difference? All I get in the sidebar is Photo Booth which is useless.

  • Optimizing Images directly in Indesign??

Is there an option to optimizing your linked images directly in Indesign? I'm looking to select an image and have Indesign take its layout scale and apply that to the image file optimizing the linked image to constrain it's proportions to that which it is sized on the page in the layout in Indesign. I know that I'm able to have the option to edit original file and then do this sizing in Photoshop. But with hundreds of photos that have a multitude of different layouts and scales in contrast to their original files and to one another there must be a way to quickly have Indesign recognize the image's scaled size in the layout and optimize the original file to be that in proportion with its scaled size within layout, right??

When you output the file to PDF you can use the Compression Settings to automatically reduce the Resolution of the image to the size - basically it optimises the image size and resolution while making the PDF.
When you resize an image to fit a particular resolution and size in Photoshop - InDesign uses the exact same method.
The only problem with this is that when resample an image you usually need to Sharpen the image a small bit - or sometimes not at all - it's purely down to the sort of image it is - if it's a soft image then you probably wouldn't need to sharpen it, if it's a hard image with lots of detail and edge contrats then you probably would need to Sharpen the image when you resample it to a different size and resolution.
In about 10 years - I generally don't resample an image in Photoshop for output - I set the Compression settings in InDesign and let InDesign do the work - for the type of images I usually use I would never need to sharpen them as the difference is neglibile for the audience reading the material.
Howver, there are times like in Art catalogues or very high-end printing I would need to sharpen the images - and that's the only time I generally resample Images in photoshop.
There are some plugins that will do go through all the images and resample (not sure if it gives the option to add a sharpening filter?) but there are some out there - this one springs to mind
    http://zevrix.com/linkoptimizer.php
But I don't think for the general public it's very important to add the sharpening filter - perhaps architecture, art, fine magazines etc where quality is an absolute must - then yes.

  • How do I lighten a photo?

    Hello:
I have a .jpg photo of a sunset.  I would like to lighten the photo so I can use it as a background on a web page.
    How can I accomplish this?
    Thank you for the help.

    Hello!
It could be that your photo is overexposed; that is, details in darker areas don't show up. There are many ways to correct overexposure, and the best method will depend on your image and what you're trying to achieve.
I suggest that you begin by opening the image and saving a copy with another name so that you have the original to go back to. (There are other ways to work without destroying information in the original, but I'll save those for another time so that this answer doesn't get too complicated.)
With that new image open in Photoshop, click on the word "Image" in the top menu and mouse down to Adjustments, then mouse over to Shadows/Highlights.
The Shadows/Highlights dialog will appear. Move the Shadow slider to increase the amount of detail you can see in dark areas of your photo, and move the Highlights slider to bring back detail in areas that are too white (also known as "blown out"). Once you like what you see, click OK.
If you're feeling adventurous, click the Show More Options box in the Shadows/Highlights dialog. The dialog will expand to give you these options:
Explore the new options by playing with the sliders. If you don't like the results, just hit the Cancel button.
As I mentioned, there are many ways to fix a photo that is too dark. For more information on the topic, please see Key Concept: Exposure.

  • How do i make a still image (photo) fit the length of the music? I record music and want to put the tracks to a video file with a still image of my business logo in the background. Any help?

How do I make a still image (photo) fit the length of the music? I record music and want to convert the tracks to a video file with a still image of my business logo in the background. On windows movie maker you could just select "fit to music" but this program isnt as easy to figure out! Any help?

Double-click on the still image in the project timeline to open the Inspector. In the Inspector, adjust the duration by typing in a new duration to match the length of your music. I think the limit for a still image is 10 minutes. If you need more than this, simply drag the image into the timeline again then adjust its duration. The two images will play seamlessly (no gap will be visible).
    See this iMovie Help topic:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3a883915
You can achieve more precision when entering durations by changing a preference in the menu item iMovie Preferences. Check (tick) the preference for Show Time As HH:MM:SS:frames. This will enable you to enter the duration of stills down to the frame level, rather than full seconds (NTSC is 30 frames per second; PAL is 25 fps). When entering times, type a colon between each time segment, such as 2:50:15, which represents 2 minutes 50 seconds and 15 frames. For 5 seconds 20 frames you would enter 5:20 and so forth.
Note that the music will only run to the length of the video in the timeline (in your case, the still images). So, after increasing the stills duration you will need to drag the end of the music track as far as required. The stills can be dragged inwards to reduce the duration if necessary.

  • I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible?

I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible? In a nutshell I want to point the link to an image in a directory that uses just part of the address.

I know this is something you can do in Maya with linked files. I guess InDesign just isn't there yet.
MW Design -  Yeah I think "Relative paths" is the right term! I want to create a Layout with an image in the center of the page - and then duplicate my folder structure with that file. With that, I want to replace the Linked image file with a diferent image file of the same name. In effect having multiple files of the same layout with different images.  I hope that made sense.

I want to find the image tag name from Image layer name InDesign JavaScript?

    Hi,
You can use following script to fetch image tag name and the layer name on which it lie:
var imgBox = app.activeDocument.rectangles // fetch all rectangular frames from the active document
    for(var i = 0; i< imgBox.length; i++)
      if(null != imgBox[i].associatedXMLElement )
                var b = imgBox[i]
               alert("Image tag name "+imgBox[i].associatedXMLElement.markupTag.name + "\n exist on layer " + imgBox[i].itemLayer.name)
Hope this would help you to resolve your problem.

  • RELINKING IMAGES MANUALLY IN INDESIGN DOESN'T WORK

    Hello,
    Please help,
I am opening an Indesign CS3 EPS image file in Indesign CS4 which is made by combining 2 Clipping path images. The problem is: I am not ablt to use the images manually. however, automatic relink works fine. Although I don't know where that option is. I just want to use manual relink.
    any suggestions??
    thanks
    Rachael

I've seen cases where this "Mini Save"/ "Automatic Recovery" did not work at all.
    Rare cases, but:
Always when the InDesign file is opened on a different computer and you are working on a network. And someone pulls the plug from that other computer (shutting it down, ignoring the messages that another machine is hooked)!
SO: I would never rely or bet on the otherwise fabulous feature "Mini Save"/ "Automatic Recovery".
There is a startup script around in the web by Martin Fischer somewhere on the site hilfdirselbst.ch, that saves a copy of the actual file in a special folder every time you do a "save" or "cmd + s" adding a continous number to the auto saved file name.

  • Placing Caption under the image (photo)

I have Photoshop Elements 5.0.2 running under Windows Vista Ultimate on an HP Pavilion having 4GB RAM.
Would like to place a caption directly under 4x6 or 6x4 photo. How do I do this? I have spent hours on this. For printing the photo there seems to be some relationships between canvas size, image size and contents of the paper size field of the Page Setup window. Where does one find what all the fancy choices are in the paper size field of the Page Setup window? I have searched the help and also my copy of Brundage's Photoshop Elements 5: The Missing Manual. Failure. Besides I'm wasting ink.
Would prefer not to have to type in using the Text (T) tool directly in the image as it appears to drastically increase the physical file size of the image (from 689K to 25.785MB).
I do not care if the caption is on a border on not. Would like no borders on top, left or right.
Please specify what goes in the Page Setup and the Print Preview windows.
    Thanks.

I want the caption to appear under the picture.
I have come up with one solution: Crop the image (photo) to, e.g., 4x5.5, then extend the canvas .5 inch below the image, thus obtaining a 4x6 for printing. Then I use the text tool (T) to type in what I want as the caption on the canvas showing at the bottom of the image.
Is there a way of using the built-in Caption facility rather than my hokey method above? I would like to not have to retype the text (once for the Caption which I can have as part of files to send folks and once to print). - There must be a way of having the built-in Caption show up on a border which only shows at the bottom and outside (not on) the photo. (?)
Thanks to Juergen for solving the size problem. - How stupid of me!
    Thanks Barbara.

  • Problem Putting Images on my InDesign File

Hi, I'm totally new to Adobe software, but I'm in the process of designing a product catalog for my company using InDesign.
So far i've been able to to stumble through the program myself, despite the learning curve. I do have one question that I think should be simple: Whenever I put an image into my InDesign document, the DPI of the image takes a really bad hit. It's the same size and everything, so why does the resolution get so messed up? How to I persist the resolution of the images?
    Thanks!

By default, InDesign uses a lower resolution screen preview in your layout, so it may appear as if the image has lost resolution when in fact nothing has changed at all. View > Display Performance > High Quality Display to get the full-res preview.
That said, the preview has very little to do with the effective image resolution, that is the actual resolution of the image at the size it was saved divided by the scaling factor used when you placed it. If the image is doubled in size, the effective resolution is half the actual resolution. You'll see those numbers in teh Info Panel, and the only one you care about is effective resolution.
