Lightening power cord going bad?

Plugged in IpodTouch this morning at work and all of a sudden the thing goes nuts -- beeping away madly with the icon showing that it's getting power going on and off, over and over. Reading that there may be some power issues in our building (and why our cafe is not running today) . Could that be it? Or has my power cord gone bad?

thanks!  I'm going to take the cord, and the power adapter (somewhat old) it plugs into, home and test it out there.  If it still won't work, then I'll take it over to my local Apple store. The lightening cord was purchased separately but at the same time as the iPodTouch5G (Dec 2012 -- Christmas gift -- so it's almost 3 months old)> The cord that came with the device itself is connected to my workstation at home and, as of last night, was working fine. But, as I stated up front, the adapter is pretty old (over 3 years).. and as I've found with others .. DO actually fail after a while. So need to determine which is failing - the cord or the power adapter. There was a power failure here early this morning (resoolved by the time I arrived), which may have inflicted nasty consequences when it was restored.

Did you check with Verizon to make sure that your destination country would allow the device you have to connect? The possibility is that this country does not have (or you are not in range) a carrier that uses CDMA. If the carriers in this country use GSM you may be out of luck. VZW cannot guarantee service in any country outside the USA.

  • G4 MDD power button going bad?

    Hi all -
I'm using a g4 MDD dual 1gig machine. Has been working great for the past few months, till just now. When I power down, the computer won't restart, unless I unplug it. (what?) That's right, the computer works fine, I turn it off and the power button will not turn the computer on unless I physically unplug the machine for a split second. After that it powers right up (at least for now). Prior to unplugging, the power switch does nothing, no lights, no chimes, nothing. It's like there is no power going to the compuer at all.
Does this sound like the power button is going bad or maybe something else? A few months ago I had PRAM/ PMU issues - could they be coming back?
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I took care of my power-up issue tonight by working on my power supply. Here is the posting I made in another thread:
Here is what I did to troubleshoot my power issue. Your power supply can be serviced and this post offers a couple thoughts and some troubleshooting suggestions. Please read it through to the end. This isn't a cure-all for all G4 Macs, but the steps I followed seem to cover a number of bases and might prove helpful to those who are really frustrated.
I've owned a Mac every year all the way back to 1987 and have never had an issue until now and I am convinced my problem may have been triggered by a power surge or brown-out, which we seem to have experienced a lot of around here lately. This post refers to the Samsung power supply with Apple Part Number 614-0224.
I have a G4 Dual 1.25 MDD I purchased in 2003. I have had a brief issue with powering up my CPU. It wouldn't power up last weekend. I unplugged the power cord, then reconnected it to the machine and it powered up. I reasoned the power cord had become loose, but then last night I couldn't get it to come up at all. Not even a click. No lights.
So I tried all the easiest possible solutions: resetting the PRAM (pulling the battery from the logic board) and resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The switch, by the way, is located near where the ATA drives plug in to the logic board. Neither of those two things solved my problem. The CPU would still not power up.
I checked the lithium battery voltage with a voltmeter. It was at 3.6v, so it was still good.
I then decided my issue was probably with the power supply. With the power cord disconnected from the back of the CPU, I pulled the black power connection from the logic board and performed a power supply voltage test following the pin schematic found in this thread:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58561
The +5v trickle voltage found at Pin 9 was not present. I had no other voltage readings on any of the other pins. My issue HAD to be with the power supply.
Tonight I removed the power supply by disconnecting all of the optical drives (I have two DVD burners in this unit), all of the hard drives (three) and all of the logic board connections.
I removed all of the screws from the outer casing of the power supply, including the fat screws attaching the two black fans to the unit and the one long screw in the middle and near the edge of where the two fans are. The casing came right off.
There have been a lot of questions as to whether there are fuses in these power supplies. There has to be some protection for them and I have yet to see any power supply that did not have a fuse or resettable circuit breaker. This power supply was no different...it has a 250W, 8A fuse that is easily accessible and is located on the same side as the male power socket, near the edge of the circuit board. It is hiding under a yellow shield and is right next to a plastic connector.
Bingo! My fuse was blown. Many glass fuses will show some sort of blackness and mine did, as well as being able to see the actual glob of metal where the fuse burst.
What caused a fuse to blow will be different for each machine. I believe in my case it suffered from a power surge. There were no visible signs of burns from arcing, popped capacitors, shorts or bad chips. The board was completely clean, which tells me the issue was near the power source. The fuse may also have been on the verge of popping when I unplugged and reconnected the power cord.
Everything's speculation, but replacing the fuse did the trick in my case and I saved myself time and about $150 (on average for a used PS on eBay). I picked up a second fuse to tape to the inside of the CPU, near the power supply, so I will have a backup fuse if I need it in the future. I may also have a drive that is going bad, or I may have too many drives operating off one supply. My Mac's been configured like this for about five years now. I will replace at least two drives with new, larger capacity drives. I keep my video and digital image files on separate drives, but have a third drive I can blow out. That surely will help prolong the life of my power supply.
While I had the computer apart I gave it a good vacuum and a little air can action. Dust can aid overheating and defeat the purpose of good airflow from fans.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac G5 Power Supply Going Bad Again?

I had my power supply replaced back in December 2005. Now my 20" iMac ALS is shutting off randomly again. Often when starting up it the fans will get loud and the computer will shut down. When booting from a CD, the computer will do the same thing - most of the time. I got it to boot up so I could run the Apple Hardware Test, but it shutoff during the mass storage segment. (It said my Logic Board was okay). I was able to boot once using the TechTool Deluxe that I got with my Protection Plan and I had no errors. I've tried several times to boot up with the DiskWarrior CD, but the computer always shuts down before it even gets past the grey Apple.
So, I can sometimes boot from CD. The computer sometimes shuts off suddenly. The computer sometimes won't boot beyond the Apple until shutting it down and trying several times. However, sometimes the computer starts right up.
I've ruled out software, the hard drive and probably the Logic Board (since it passed the Apple Hardware Test). Can it be anything beside the power supply?
My iMac falls under both extended warranties and I have AppleCare Protection Plan until sometime in 2008. If only it wasn't so hard to get a reservation at the Genius Bar...

Hey... had the SAME thing just happen to me. It IS the power supply, trust me. The model iMac you have had defective power supplies from the start. It was/is just a matter of time before they go out. The GOOD news is you have Apple Care (although you are probably covered under the Repair Extension program for this issue/iMac model)... Now beecasue you HAVE Apple Care and are not gonna get this fixed under the extension program APLE WILL COME TO YOU to fix your iMac. It is part of your Applecare agreement. Tell them it is impossible for you to bring this heavy, awkward (albeit a design wonder) computer to a genius bar -- which are often situated in malls and hard to get to areas carrying an iMac. Tell them you just can't do it. They WILL come to you. It actually free up the Apple Stores from doing the repairs and tying up the genius's... I just did this, a three day turn around and I never left my house... and I live in LA where we have at least 6 Apples stores in my vicinity. Hope this helps! If it does can you reward with a "helpful/solved" (I know that's tacky to ask for but this will solve his probably)... Do it, call Apple, tell them you physically can't carry it in (probably the scenario) and they will dispatch a tech. GOOD GOOD Luck.... I know this shut off thing can make you crazy!!!! Kudos for buying AppleCare!

  • SATA Power Cord

I have an RD240 and want to install a SATA drive in one of the empty bays.  I will use this drive as a dedicated backup.  There are plenty of open SATA connections on the board but no SATA power connectors from the power supply.  The power cord going to the optical dirve appears to be a mini sata power cord.  Anyone know how I can connect a power source to the spare sata drive?

  • Macbook pro turns off when taken off the power-cord, is the battery bad?

For a while my MCP when I take it off the charger it doesnt hold the whole time as it should and the battery doesnt last long, and now the past couple days when i take my laptop off the power-cord it will stay on for five minutes then shut down. I dont know what is going on, maybe a bad battery? I got my computer august 2006 . These are my numbers.
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 590
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 431
    Amperage (mA): 685
    Voltage (mV): 12575
    Cycle Count: 167
isnt the fully charge capacity a little low? what should I do?
    thanks!

If your MacBook Pro is a core duo model you may have a bad battery and be elgible for a battery replacement. The batteries on the original core duo MacBook and MacBook Pro had the warranty extended and extra year. The details are in this link.
MacBook and MacBook Pro Battery Update 1.2
Call Apple at the number in the link and explain your problem. You could also go into an Apple store and get help there.

  • Edge 540 model : when I connect/disconnect AC power cord, screen goes dark

For the past few days, everytime I connect the power cord, the screen goes dark for a second. The same thing happens when I disconnect the power cord. Can someone help me find out what is wrong with it? Is it a hardware issue or is it just a momentary glitch (It just started happening yesterday)?
My laptop is brand new so I can use the warranty if i have to.
    OS: Win 8
    Thank you.

this is a normal behaviour it happens all the time. It is your refresh rate changing between different power setting. Set the screen refresh rate at 60 hz for both battery and with ac adapter connected this should prevent the momentary blanking of the lcd.

  • IBook screen goes black after unplugging power cord

I originally posted this topic in the wrong discussion group for iMac G4, the computer is actually an iBook G4.
My wife's iBook bought about 2 years ago shows battery 100 percent charged. But when she unplugs the power cord the screen goes black. Can not be restarted until she plugs in the power cord. It seems like it might be the battery. She got extra batteries when she bought it. Is there a way to tell if it is the battery before having to replace it?

Did you check on the status of your battery using "About this Mac" under the Apple on the menu bar? Click on "More Info..." and select Power under Hardware. It will tell you capacity and cycle count.
You may have a dead battery.

  • Bump Power Cord, Computer Goes Black

So I am having a very strange problem that I hope someone can help me with. Every time I touch/bump the end of the power cord (the connector? aka the part that goes into the iBook) my computer screen goes black. All my programs keep running and itunes keeps playing, I just get a black screen. I then just close my laptop, open it, and everything works fine again. This problem literally happens every time I touch the connector part of the power cord though. Anyone know what that problem is? Thanks so much!
P.S. - I have already tried reseting the PMU.

    Hey Brandon,
Forgive me for my ignorance, but what do you mean which iBook we are dealing with here? >Like what more detailed information are you requesting besides it being an iBook G4, so I know specifically what to tell you.
So if you look here, in the section "iBook G4":
    http://www.lowendmac.com/powerbooks.html
You'll see there were 10 different iBook G4 models.
    Four 12" models:
    # 12": G4/800, G4/1 GHz (2003), G4/1.2 GHz (2004), G4/1.33 GHz (2005)
    and 6 14" models:
    # 14": G4/900, G4/1 GHz (2003), G4/1 GHz, 1.2 GHz (2004), G4/1.33 GHz, G4/1.42 GHz (2005)
The information is on a bar coded strip under the keyboard.
While there are many similarities from model to model there are also differences, especially where cables are located.
In general I would look at the DC in board since that is very prone to damage. There is a know weakness in the inverter cable which we have seen fail right at the right hinge point (as you look at the iBook).
This is relatively easy to diagnose since you can still see the screen working if you use a flashlight.
