Lighting Effects All Black

Using Mac Photoshop CS6
Drawing Mode: Normal; "Use Graphics Processor to Accelerate Computation" and "Use OpenCL" are both checked.
Filter > Lighting Effects = all I get is black. The element I'm trying to add lighting to is completely black. What's more, the circular controls are gone. Point, Spot and Infinite are the same.
Used to work fine. Didn't change anything.
Thanks.

Lighting Effects is dependent on your GPU and display driver.
You might have gotten a driver update through Windows Update that changed the behavior of your system.  But you haven't described  your computer, so that's speculation - you may not even have Windows.  If you DO have Windows, you may be able to get an even newer/better display driver directly from the web site of the maker of your video card.
It's also possible that if you go into your Preferences - Performance dialog, press the [Advanced Settings...] button, and change to one of the other drawing modes you might be able to recover the functionality.  Make SURE to close and restart Photoshop after making changes there.

  • Lighting Effects Gives Black Screen

I am using Adobe Photoshop CC (2014) and when I try to use lighting effects all I get is a black screen.  The image is 8 bit, I convert it to a smart object, but when I select FILTER>RENDER>LIGHTING EFFECTS another window pops up and instead of seeing the light and circles it is just completely black.  Any help would be appreciated.

That usually means a problem with a video card driver.  Have you updated your video card driver from the GPU maker's website?

  • Lighting Effects renders black, or very dark.

    Hi,
I have been faced with an almost identical problem listed here - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5486667#5486667
However, the solution listed has not helped me.
The only thing that changes it from complete blackness is the "Ambience" value.
I've done all software and hardware updates, reinstalled the graphics card driver, and restarted a multitude of times.
    I am using:
    Dell Optiplex 390
    Intel(R) HD Graphics 2000
    Windows 7 64 bit
    Photoshop CC
    No Color Management
No plug-ins, or anything other than default PS settings
If it helps, I used Lighting Effects on Photoshop CS3 and CS6 for almost two years on this machine with no problem. This was the first time I had tried to use it since I upgraded to CC. I uninstalled all other versions of PS when I upgraded, so I have not tried to replicate the problem in older versions.
I have attached screenshots for reference.

Check to see if there are any updated drivers for your card.  http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
The standard advice is to get the latest driver from the Graphics card maker rather than Microsoft or your PC maker.

    Worked fine yesterday. Thanks.

For anyone else with this problem, resetting the Preferences worked for me:
    Reset preferences.
Resetting preferences returns OpenGL settings to their default status. Reset Photoshop preferences by pressing and holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option+Command (Mac OS) immediately after you start Photoshop.
Click Yes when asked if you want to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File.
Retry the function that caused the problem.

  • Photoshop cc lighting effects do not seem to work

I am trying to put spotlight on area in photo but from render - lighting effects all that happens is my workspace changes on the right to "lighting effects" but nothing works and I have to close this side and shut down photoshop just to go back to a normal "essential" workspace. == what is the problem?

I'm having the same issue as well. Just started using CC tonight on both my home and work Macs. My home computer is a late 2006 MacPro, 6GB RAM, 2.66ghz and the work computer is 2013 MacPro with way more guts in it. Photoshop at home runs terribly slow all together but I did manage to see some slight improvement when I switched off "Use Graphics Processor" in the Preferences panel (Prefs > Performance) but this also turns off the Lighting effects filter. I remote logged in to my work Mac and using the same file (saved in the cloud), applied the lighting filter and it worked perfectly. All that to say, I'm pretty certain is a graphics processor/memory issue more than it being a CC issue. At home, the filter attempts to work, stops, and the only thing left is the properties panel like the effect is active.
Looks like I need some upgrades.
    Hope this helps!

So, you're totally new to computers?
Go to the Help menu in Photoshop and select the System Info menu item.  Copy all that information and paste all of it here MINUS your serial number.
Yes, Photoshop can delegate a lot of the computing tasks to the GPU on your graphics card.  You may have to disable that feature in Photoshop Preferences > Performance.

I have CC and while attempting Light Effects, the Light Effects Layer will appear in the layers panel, but the option bar will not appear and neither will the Properties panel. All my preferences are set correct, and my computer has a compatible video card and RAM. Please help!
I tried to delete the layer attempt again. I am in a Photoshop class, but the work is all online, so all my teacher is going to do is send me to this site. I am trying to edit a photo for this class, and without this working, i go to filter>render>light effects. the bar and panel will pop up for about 2 seconds, then disappear. How do i get the options bar and properties panel to display?

I was about to suggest resetting LE from the Workspace drop-down top right corner, but if you can't see the Options Bar, I guess that is not going to happen.  The normal Tool reset is grey out for LE, so it might be a case of resetting Preferences.
    Reset Preferences
Windows — Hold down Shift Ctrl Alt immediately after starting Photoshop
Mac — Hold down Shift Cmd Opt immediately after starting Photoshop

Ask in the AME/ Premiere forum and by all means provide some solid technical info - system specs, sequence settings, render settings, footage used. Nobody can help you without that.

  • Urgent - Need help with Lighting Effects Filter

    Hi,
I need urgent help on something regarding the Lighting Effects filter in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I need lighting effect urgently to complete a project.
I am using Photoshop CS5 on a Windows Vista computer in 64-bit mode.
On the net it is given that you can run photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode to use the lighting effects filter - both on Mac and PC.
    My Problem:
While on the net it is given how to change from 64-bit to 32-bit and vice-versa, I have my Photoshop CS5 installed on 'E - Drive' and not on 'C - Drive' due to lack of space. I have followed all the instructions on how to open it in 32-bit mode on the net, but I still cannot use the lighting effects plugin.
What I need is if someone could give simple and clear instructions on how to open Photoshop CS5 32-bit version instead of opening the default 64-bit version on Windows Vista - that would be great.
    Looking forward to answers.
    Thanks.

That advice about running the 32 bit version of cs5 for the Render> Lighting Effects filter
only pertains to the mac version of photoshop cs5.
The lighting effects filter does work in the 64 bit version of photoshop cs5 on windows, your
document just has to be 8 bits/channel and in the RGB Color mode (Image>Mode) same
for using the lighting effects filter in the 32 bit version of cs5.
Added: In general it's frowned upon installing photoshop on drives other than C drive.

  • Using the lighting effects filter causes my CS6 to crash

    Hi,
I read other threads with people have issues with their PC, but I am not able to follow them to correct my issues.
When I open a JPEG file from my mark iii into CS6, I try to start a new layer and then add the lighting effects filter.  CS6 crashes (the little effects comes up on the screen and the little blue circle goes round and round). Nothing happens, but if I check task manager it says photoshop is not running.
I have windows, 16GB ram, and am using a small percent of my memory.
How do I see if I need to update my video card and how do I do that?
    Thank you, Michele

Have you installed all the Photoshop updates?
And have you checked your GPU maker's website for updated video card drivers?

  • Lighting Effects filter in PS (CS6; 64-bit) crashes program

This is a Win7 64-bit OS, new CS6 installation with all updates applied/installed.
Use of Lighting Effects rendering filter in PhotoShop (CS6, both 64- and 32-bit versions) causes PS to crash.

I did make some suggestions, which you appear to have only dabbled with...  Did you try Basic mode?  Did you try checking/unchecking all the various settings in all the combinations?  Be exhaustive.  You feel your system is advanced, I get that, but you're looking to isolate a problem here.
I'm not as familiar with nVidia as I am with ATI, but have you investigated the various settings their driver UI provides?
I'm not saying there's a definite fix in there, but In doing these things you might:
Discover a combination of settings as a workaround that makes it work acceptably for you.
Be able to tell Adobe or nVidia exactly what to look for if they want to investigate it further.
By the way, have you contacted nVidia and let them know Photoshop is crashing when it tries to use their GPU for Lighting Effects?
Lastly, some folks have found that fully uninstalling the display driver, cleaning up any remnants of it and prior display drivers that may still be laying around, and installing the latest driver sometimes helps.  Display driver writers are apparently not all that good at writing installers.
I never had this issue with CS4... Only CS6
People sometimes like to say that kind of thing, but (and I'm sorry to be blunt):  So what?
This is an entirely new program with new, different, and greater demands of your computer system.  It's using more and different features of your GPU than any prior version.
I can only assure you that it does work okay for some others.  I have had no problems with Lighting Effects myself.  But you should know that since Photoshop CS6 first came out I *HAVE* had crashes while trying to do 3D modeling work.  At least some of those were caused by the (then current) ATI display drivers.  I (and others) contacted ATI and described the problems, and their subsequent driver versions have gotten more stable.  Their current version seems to work rather well with Photoshop CS6.  My point is that things can get better.  Hang in there.

  • Acrobat docs print all black

Our 'workhorse' LJ 5Si has beeen with us for YEARS - and has pretty much always been able to do everything..
This 5Si has a JetDirect Ethernet connection on our LAN and everyone prints to it routinely... it gets a lot of usage...
But now, we suddenly have a recurrent 'new issue' with ONLY ONE OF OUR EIGHT COMPUTERS (!!!).
Suddenly, it seems that every Acrobat 'pfd' document he attempts to print yields a page that is so totally black as to be unreadable.. 100% coverage (except the margin areas)....  As this user described it: "as dark as black cat in a coal mine at midnight...".
Mysteriously, this also happens when he prints to our other 'workhorse' printer, an HP LJ 8500 color laser....  so this is obviously something to do with THIS PC and the PCL drivers for these two lasers, as NONE of the other seven PCs has this problem...  They all can print without problems to both of these printers.
They can all print the same documents that THIS PC cannot...
And yet, a cantankerous old HP LJ 4 prints like a gem... every time... from this same PC.  (PCL 5 vs PCL 4...?)
We've tried 'updating' the HP PCL drivers (after first trying the 'default' Microsoft drivers, we then downloaded all new HP drivers), we've tried upgrading Acrobat, we've tried un-installing ALL of this (printer drivers as well as Acrobat), we've tried un-installing and deleting all associated folders for both - we've even tried creating a new user account...  Seems like nothing works....
I'm about to 'blow away' Windows and re-install EVERYTHING (and that's one DAUNTING task, no doubt ... as an architectural firm, there's alot of software to re-load), so before I resort to this 'last ditch scenario', I thought I'd post a "HELP!" here and see if anyone has a clue as to what the heck is going on here...
I REALLY don''t look forward to spending the next ten hours re-building Windows XP Pro and ALL the software setup on this workstation...
Even though this PC is less than a year old (Core2-Duo @ 2.66 GHz, 4GB DDR2 RAM,  250GB RAID-1 hard disks, etc.), I'd rather buy an entirely NEW PC than spend my time re-building this Windows OS and all the software...  Yee-Gods!
    Help...?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

So from my understanding, only printing from the acrobat software from one PC to 2 different HP Laserjets causes the pages to come out black.
    Test pages print ok?
pages from other applications print ok?
It's likely an adobe issue, probably some kind of conflict with an update or something, have you tried slowly rolling back the windows updates to a date where the printer was working?
The only other off the wall thing I can think of is a really funky network issue or bad cable but that should theoretically effect all applications.
Good luck but I think you are looking at a complete uninstall/reinstall if the driver/app removal didn't resolve.

  • Lighting effects not working, 'Could not apply the workspace because there is not enough memory (RAM)' with 4GB RAM?

Tried to use 'render/lighting effects' on 5 more or less new different laptops now. All kind of Window versions.
They all have at least 4GB RAM. The Graphic Card is compatible.
Layer to work on is RGB-Type.
It's all about Photoshop CC 2014, trial version.
When I go to 'Lighting effects' it says first:
'The 3D features require that 'Use Graphics Processor' is enabled in the Performance preferences. Your video card must meet the minimum requirements and you may need to check that your driver is working correctly.'
    - I switched the 'Use Graphics Processor' on and off and restarted new - nothing happens.
    - Video card is compatible.
    Second it says:
''Could not apply the workspace because there is not enough memory (RAM)'
    - RAM on all the computers I tested it with is at least 4GB
    Please help!

We would need to know the amount of Video ram you have. If it is above 512 MB, then check for driver updates.
    Windows OS
    Click Start.
On the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type "dxdiag" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
The DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens. Click the Display tab.
On the Display tab, information about your graphics card is shown in the Device section. You can see the name of your card, as well as how much video memory it has.
Once you know the kind of graphics card you have, visit the manufacturer's website to download the latest driver. Here are links for downloading drivers from the most common graphics card manufacturers:
