Lighting effects previews ok, but disappears

Hi there,
Huge apologies if this has been covered elsewhere or is a simple solution. I just need the answer asap. I am working in Photoshop CS6.
I am putting a light effect over a layer and the lighting effect using the alpha channel.
Everything is fine in the preview stage, however when I go back to the main part of my document the effect appears for a little while then disappears. I save it before it disappears as a JPEG and as a psd to input into indesign but when saved the lighting effect does not show up on either file.
I don't think its crashing or anything. I appologise I'm not 100% sure what the specs of my Mac is, I only just got it. Its the i7 retina display released mid last year with 8GB RAM SSD. I hope the screen shots can help
This is what it looks like without the effect and what it looks like after the effect disppears.
This is what it looks like in preview, and what it should look like when saved.

First screenshot shows the result when "Alpha 1" is targeted before activating the filter. "Alpha 1" is no longer targeted and Channels panel reveals that the filter has not affected the target layer. Only the display image has the result of the filter. When the display is later updated with the real content of the document, the filter effect will vanish.
Second screenshot shows the result if "Alpha 1" is not targeted before activating the filter. Channels panel reveals that the target layer really has been affected by the filter.

  • Lighting Effects filter in PS (CS6; 64-bit) crashes program

This is a Win7 64-bit OS, new CS6 installation with all updates applied/installed.
Use of Lighting Effects rendering filter in PhotoShop (CS6, both 64- and 32-bit versions) causes PS to crash.

I did make some suggestions, which you appear to have only dabbled with...  Did you try Basic mode?  Did you try checking/unchecking all the various settings in all the combinations?  Be exhaustive.  You feel your system is advanced, I get that, but you're looking to isolate a problem here.
I'm not as familiar with nVidia as I am with ATI, but have you investigated the various settings their driver UI provides?
I'm not saying there's a definite fix in there, but In doing these things you might:
Discover a combination of settings as a workaround that makes it work acceptably for you.
Be able to tell Adobe or nVidia exactly what to look for if they want to investigate it further.
By the way, have you contacted nVidia and let them know Photoshop is crashing when it tries to use their GPU for Lighting Effects?
Lastly, some folks have found that fully uninstalling the display driver, cleaning up any remnants of it and prior display drivers that may still be laying around, and installing the latest driver sometimes helps.  Display driver writers are apparently not all that good at writing installers.
I never had this issue with CS4... Only CS6
People sometimes like to say that kind of thing, but (and I'm sorry to be blunt):  So what?
This is an entirely new program with new, different, and greater demands of your computer system.  It's using more and different features of your GPU than any prior version.
I can only assure you that it does work okay for some others.  I have had no problems with Lighting Effects myself.  But you should know that since Photoshop CS6 first came out I *HAVE* had crashes while trying to do 3D modeling work.  At least some of those were caused by the (then current) ATI display drivers.  I (and others) contacted ATI and described the problems, and their subsequent driver versions have gotten more stable.  Their current version seems to work rather well with Photoshop CS6.  My point is that things can get better.  Hang in there.

  • Lighting effects won't fully render

When I try to render lighting effects there is a horizontal gap in the middle of the image where the lighting effects do not render. Never had trouble rendering 3d or other things. Is this a defect in the software? Windows 7 64bit, Photoshop CC 2014, processor Intel i7 3.4 GHz, RAM 16 GB, and Video card GeForce GTX 560 Ti VRAM 1GB.

Sure do. I keep my drivers are up-to-date. I'ts a good card and not too old. It renders lighting effects vdery fast but not completely - a narrow rectangular gap in middle. Some gaps are larger than this.

I have CC and while attempting Light Effects, the Light Effects Layer will appear in the layers panel, but the option bar will not appear and neither will the Properties panel. All my preferences are set correct, and my computer has a compatible video card and RAM. Please help!
I tried to delete the layer attempt again. I am in a Photoshop class, but the work is all online, so all my teacher is going to do is send me to this site. I am trying to edit a photo for this class, and without this working, i go to filter>render>light effects. the bar and panel will pop up for about 2 seconds, then disappear. How do i get the options bar and properties panel to display?

I was about to suggest resetting LE from the Workspace drop-down top right corner, but if you can't see the Options Bar, I guess that is not going to happen.  The normal Tool reset is grey out for LE, so it might be a case of resetting Preferences.
    Reset Preferences
Windows — Hold down Shift Ctrl Alt immediately after starting Photoshop
Mac — Hold down Shift Cmd Opt immediately after starting Photoshop

  • Disappearing Icons/Controls in Blur Gallery and Lighting Effects Filters

About a month ago (after I downloaded Photoshop 2014 but BEFORE the most recent update); I found that the adjustable tack icon (in Field Blur) and the light icons (in Lighting Effects) have disappeared.  I can still adjust their controls but they don't appear on the screen so I'm not sure where exactly they are and thus can't move them.  Anyone else had this issue?  This has persisted after the most recent update.

Could you please post a screenshot to illustrate the issue?
    What are the Performance Preferences?
What have you done for general trouble-shooting so far (restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be of special interest)?

Edit: Have you tried changing the GPU "Advanced Settings" (and restarting Photoshop, otherwise that won’t take effect)?

  • Preview toggle in Lighting Effects crashes CS6 Beta

    I'm on Win7x64 Ultimate, 8GB RAM, GTX260-896 MB VRAM, latest drivers (296.10 released 13 Mar 2012).
I can use, and save the results of using, Lighting Effects (only relatively small (< 4 MB) flat 16-bit TIFFs and flat JPEGs tried so far) with no apparent difficulties. However, any but the most limited use (not exceededing three on average - applied as a continuous toggle) of the Preview button invariably causes CS6 Beta to crash. This is the error message generated by Windows:
"Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopprd working
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

This happens with all Basic, Normal and Advanced Drawing Modes in the "Advanced Settings" tab of the Graphics Processor Settings dialog in the Performance Tab of Preferences. Having ticked "Use Graphics Processor" and then clicked the "Advanced Settings" button, CS6 Beta tells me that Open CL is an available option (which is consistent with the release notes for the latest drivers) but because my graphics card is now about 4 or 5 years old, I have my doubts and so my testing  has included not selecting that option. However all tests have selected "Use Graphics Processor to Accelerate Computation".
I was hoping that someone in the Adobe development team might be able to have a look at this issue for me? Please?

Continuing to experience this problem - this time applying the filter to a Smart Object layer in an 84 MB PSD file - crash occuring after just 3 toggles of the Preview button.
Here is the summary and full report generated by NirSoft's AppCrashView (ver 1.11) program. It takes its info from the Windows WERs.
Can anyone else reproduce this behaviour ?

  • Lighting Effects opens, but no icons/control

When I open lighting effects in CS6, there are none of the resizing/repositioning icons [controls, widgets, whatever you want to call them] that I see in all the tutorials (and remember from previous versions of Photoshop). The Lighting Effects Properties window opens on the right, but no amount of fiddling produces any change in the image. Even if I choose a preset, my image is still just a useless darkened version of its former self (and still no icons appear).
BTW,  I am running Windows 7 on a quad core laptop with a supported video card (Radeon HD 6520G), so this problem should have nothing to do with that.
    Any ideas?

CS6 Lighting Effects requires a video GPU you may want to check your GPU settings. The screen should look something like this.

  • Titles/Captions in Dutch remain in "Preview", but disappear (become defaults in English) after "Publish to Devices".

In my project all (sub)titles and captions (in Dutch) remain in "Preview", but disappear (become defaults in English) after "Publish for Devices".
    How can I solve this?

    Beste Lieve,
    Groet,
    Jan

    Hi Cyclosaurus,
Thank you for your reply. Sorry to bug you again but can I ask some further questions? Pls excuse my lack of knowledge on these things.
    In relation to your points:
    1) In the ftp publishing settings, public_html is acutal in where it says "site name", where it says "URL" I have http://www.gippmed.com. I was advised to put public_html in "site name" from my hosting. If I put anything else it publishes the entire site to a folder with that name on the server and is not viewable online?
    2) I have removed the spaces in the album page name and will reupload soon. In relation to the image file names, am I correct in saying that iweb is naming them from the captions? Do you really have to use one word captions or use underscores, it looks a little odd? I have read troubleshooting articles about iweb and spaces and it also recommends similar as you are, suggesting that all page names should have underscore instead of spaces. Problem is, if for example I change the page name "About Me" to "About_Me" iweb automatically changes it in the navigation menu and this looks silly to have undescores in the Nav Menu. Is there a way around this?
Lastly, a new problem that I have never had before:
Previously, iweb would remember what I had published and only publish new site changes. Now, every time I turn my computer off and on, I open iweb and it doesn't recognise any of the previous publishing, ie it republishes the entire site.
Thank you again for your help

  • After Effects CC on a Macbook. In RAM Preview the green progress line is not displaying. Preview works but no line to indicate progress. Is there a way to tunr the line back on?

We have two Macbook Pros running CC After Effects. Bothdo not show the green line while running RAM Preview. The Preview works but there's no way to watch its progress. Any thoughts?

It is an option in the timeline window. Upper Right Corner...
Sometimes it causes problems. Maybe that is why it is turned off.

Tested video cards for Photoshop CC and CC 2014
Adobe tested the following video cards before the release of Photoshop CC and CC 2014. This document lists the video card by series. The minimum amount of VRAM supported on video cards for Photoshop CC and CC 2014 is 512 MB.
Important: This document is updated as newly released cards are tested. However, Adobe cannot test all cards in a timely manner. If a video card is not listed here, but was released after May 2013, you can assume that the card will work with Photoshop CC and CC 2014.
Adobe tested laptop and desktop versions of the following cards. Be sure to download the latest driver for your specific model (Laptop and desktop versions have slightly different names.)
    nVidia GeForce: 400, 500, 600, 700 series
    nVidia Quadro: 2000, 4000 (Windows and Mac OS), CX, 5000, 6000, K600, K2000, K4000, K5000 (Windows and Mac OS)

Intel HD Graphics P3000, Intel HD Graphics P4000, Intel(R) HD Graphics P4600/P4700, Intel HD Graphics 5000
Note: AMD/ATI 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 series, nVidia GeForce 7000, 8000, 9000, 100, 200, 300 series and Intel HD Graphics (First generation) cards/GPUs are no longer being tested and are not officially supported in Photoshop CC and CC 2014. Some GL functionality is available for these cards, but it's possible that newer features don't work.

  • After Effects CS4 - layer appears in low-res but disappears in full-res

    hi
Does anyone know what underlying circumstances might cause this to happen?
I have a composition with 12 layers, 3 of which appear fine in the preview screen up to half-res, but when I bump the project up to full-res they vanish. Likewise when I render the comp at web-video settings everything is fine but at full res I lose those layers.
    The layers are:
    1 - Camera
    2 - Adjustment layer
    3 - jpg 3d
    4 - jpg 3d
    5 - Adjustment layer
    6 - Pre-prepared composition 3d
    7 - Black solid
    8 - jpg 3d
    9 - jpg 3d
    10 - jpg 3d
    11 - White solid
    12 - Black solid
All the jpgs are different parts of the same very large image, masked. Layers 8, 9 & 10 are the ones that appear in low res but disappear in full res. If I move layer 3 down to below layer 7, that disappears (in full res) too.
All a bit odd! Any ideas?

when I say "bump up to full res" I mean either select "full" as opposed to "quarter" "third" or "half" at the bottom of the preview
window, or else doing the same from within the composition settings.
A colleague created the composition and I think the problem must have originated at his end as his PC is fairly slow. The jpg image was very large indeed (24000x6000) and he has now cropped it, and it works fine.
He sent me the updated project file, and sure enough it works fine on mine as well, despite the fact that he didn't send me the cropped jpg. So my laptop is still using  the same 24000x6000 jpg file, and now it's working!!

  • Help! Lighting Effects filter has disappeared.

As the headline says, the Lighting Effects filter has disappeared from the Render options in the Filters menu of Photoshop CS5. Can someone please tell me how to get it back?
    Thanks!

Thanks to both of you for pointing out that Lighting Effects only runs in 32-bit mode in Photoshop CS5.
Of course, the obvious followup question is: Adobe is responsible for keeping its native plugins up-to-date, isn't it?
8 GB RAM upgrades are becoming very affordable nowadays, which makes 64-bit mode a desirable option for a much broader range of Adobe customers than ever before. I respectfully suggest that Adobe get on the stick with this one.
