Lighting effects smart filter shifts between documents
I have a smart object (a rectangular shape layer) that I have applied a Lighting Effects smart filter to. I got it looking just how I wanted, then moved it over to another PSD (by dragging and dropping the layer group). When it landed in the other document, the whole effect had shifted, with the position of the light changing on me... Why is this, and can it be avoided?
One way would be to convert your shape layer a smart object,
then instead applying the filter, double click on the smart object thumbnail
to edit the contents and convert the shape in the document that opens to
smart object and apply your lighting effects filter and then save and close
that document.
Now when dragging between documents, the effect should stay the same.

CS6 Lighting Effects from Filter Render
I know that 3d is not available with the basic creative cloud photoshop only. But my oil paint would not work and they said it is the graphics card. i contacted my laptop manufacturer and they said it is the latest and updated version for my laptop and that i cannot change it for another as it is soldered to the mother board. Fair enough. I can live without oil paint.
But, now the lighting effects do not work either and a message pops up referring to the graphic card again.
Has anyone else had a problem with this and do you have any advice. Am I missing anything anyway or can it be worked around?
Thank youYes, I'm having the same issue in Mavericks with the latest version of Photoshop CC. I cannot duplicate nor can I drag a light source to the trash in the Lights palette.

Lighting Effects filter in PS (CS6; 64-bit) crashes program
This is a Win7 64-bit OS, new CS6 installation with all updates applied/installed.
Use of Lighting Effects rendering filter in PhotoShop (CS6, both 64- and 32-bit versions) causes PS to crash.I did make some suggestions, which you appear to have only dabbled with... Did you try Basic mode? Did you try checking/unchecking all the various settings in all the combinations? Be exhaustive. You feel your system is advanced, I get that, but you're looking to isolate a problem here.
I'm not as familiar with nVidia as I am with ATI, but have you investigated the various settings their driver UI provides?
I'm not saying there's a definite fix in there, but In doing these things you might:
Discover a combination of settings as a workaround that makes it work acceptably for you.
Be able to tell Adobe or nVidia exactly what to look for if they want to investigate it further.
By the way, have you contacted nVidia and let them know Photoshop is crashing when it tries to use their GPU for Lighting Effects?
Lastly, some folks have found that fully uninstalling the display driver, cleaning up any remnants of it and prior display drivers that may still be laying around, and installing the latest driver sometimes helps. Display driver writers are apparently not all that good at writing installers.
I never had this issue with CS4... Only CS6
People sometimes like to say that kind of thing, but (and I'm sorry to be blunt): So what?
This is an entirely new program with new, different, and greater demands of your computer system. It's using more and different features of your GPU than any prior version.
I can only assure you that it does work okay for some others. I have had no problems with Lighting Effects myself. But you should know that since Photoshop CS6 first came out I *HAVE* had crashes while trying to do 3D modeling work. At least some of those were caused by the (then current) ATI display drivers. I (and others) contacted ATI and described the problems, and their subsequent driver versions have gotten more stable. Their current version seems to work rather well with Photoshop CS6. My point is that things can get better. Hang in there.

Need help with Lighting Effects; CS3
So, let's say that you were trying to work out some customization using the Lighting effects under: Filter > Render > Lighting Effects.
I understand that there is a very specific file that has the Styles.
Any chance I can fix this problem? If you mean that they're grayed out then that's because you're not in RGB color mode with 8bits/channel. If you mean that the filters simply don't show up in the Filters menu then they're probably hidden in which case go to Edit->Menus and make sure that the Set dropdown is set to Photoshop Defaults (switching to the Basic workspace changes the menus to the Basic set that hides a lot of menu items)

I recently upgrade from PSE 9 to PSE 12. I like the difference in the user interface but cannot find Lighting Effects in Filter/Render.
Is it tucked away somewhere else. No, alas, it's gone. But if you have an older version it can be copied over, at least in windows:

Photoshop 13.0.1

16 bits per channel RGB mode.
The Lighting Effects filter quantises the optional height-map channel to 8 bits, which can result in a very obvious terraced-slopes appearance and moiré.
(Adobe, please do not simply reply with "you should be using 13.0.4" unless that actually fixes the problem.)Alpha channels are 16-bit in a 16-bit per channel document. As Christoph said, selections are limited to 8-bit, so if you make a channel from a selection then that channel will have 8-bit quantisation.
Here is an example of Lighting Effects filter using a channel containing a 16-bit radial gradient as a height-map, and where the filter is quantising the height values to 8-bit. -
How to move pages between documents WITHOUT elements shifting
Hi everyone! My team members and I are so frustrated over what I think should be a really simple issue: copying/moving/dragging pages between documents and NOTHING CHANGING.
Whenever we move pages between documents (which we have to do on a monthly basis - moving content into client branded files), at least ONE thing will shift and it usually has to do with overset text and/or text wrap. We have googled our brains out. We've tried everything on this list How-To: 10 Techniques for Copying Pages Between InDesign Documents | CreativePro.com and in the various Lynda tutorials we've looked at. We have combined our powers and still can not solve this problem so now I come to you, hoping that you can please please please help us figure out this issue before one of us throws a computer out the window.
We have this one document. And this is what one of the problem pages looks like. Everything is on one layer. (look at the section marked 5)
Then I move the pages (copy/paste the content; drag and drop the pages; etc.) into the destination document so we can apply branding.
AND THIS HAPPENS.
WHY does this text suddenly become overset?
The preferences of both documents are IDENTICAL. In fact, Document B was originally created from Document A.
AND FUN FYI: I took Document A and Saved As a new name. Opened it the new name. And tried moving the pages into the newly named document -- and the SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED.
I am going to bash my head into a wall. Can someone please shed some light on this? Have you seen this before? How do we fix it??aschwartau wrote:
Doesn't saving as IDML lose some of the properties if you use any shadow or other effects?
That's not something that I have ever heard, but since I haven't heard everything, I suppose it's possible. What you may be thinking of is that some people use idml to migrate a file to a lower version, and if that lower version lacks a feature of the version that created the file, you will either lose or modify the way that that feature worked in the original. I don't think that even in that scenario that a feature that was present in both versions would go away just because it took a trip through idml to get to an earlier version. And if idml botched shadow or effects, nobody would use it, and I don't think Adobe would have it.
aschwartau wrote:
If we had just done a final Save As on the Document A before giving it to the team member who's going to be copying the content into Document B, does that not count as doing a Save As? You mean the minute it's freshly opened try doing another Save As? (P.S. Edit: Just tried this. Didn't change what happened. )
The thing that Save-As does is remove little bits of data associated with undos that a normal Save retains. Sometimes this data can lead to problems, so any time you do it, it will help, but if you do it at stage 37 and you hand off at stage 38, you will have cleared out most all of anything that may have built up over time. I don't want to give the impression that it is required, but it certainly doesn't hurt, and is probably a good idea to Save-As periodically. -
Urgent - Need help with Lighting Effects Filter
Hi,
I need urgent help on something regarding the Lighting Effects filter in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I need lighting effect urgently to complete a project.
I am using Photoshop CS5 on a Windows Vista computer in 64-bit mode.
On the net it is given that you can run photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode to use the lighting effects filter - both on Mac and PC.
My Problem:
While on the net it is given how to change from 64-bit to 32-bit and vice-versa, I have my Photoshop CS5 installed on 'E - Drive' and not on 'C - Drive' due to lack of space. I have followed all the instructions on how to open it in 32-bit mode on the net, but I still cannot use the lighting effects plugin.
What I need is if someone could give simple and clear instructions on how to open Photoshop CS5 32-bit version instead of opening the default 64-bit version on Windows Vista - that would be great.
Looking forward to answers.
Thanks. That advice about running the 32 bit version of cs5 for the Render> Lighting Effects filter
only pertains to the mac version of photoshop cs5.
The lighting effects filter does work in the 64 bit version of photoshop cs5 on windows, your
document just has to be 8 bits/channel and in the RGB Color mode (Image>Mode) same
for using the lighting effects filter in the 32 bit version of cs5.
Added: In general it's frowned upon installing photoshop on drives other than C drive.

Why can't I use lighting effect filter in CS6 with an 8bit RGB file?
I've read all over that the filter only works with an 8bit/RGB file, which my file is, so I don't understand what the problem is. I am attempting to light a smart object (3d bevel and extruded text) that I created in illustrator, and thought that I might just need to rasterize the smart object before the filter would work, but even after I render it and or flatten the image, merge visible, I still don't have the option to use lighting effects! Please help!
Thank you for your prompt reply. After doing a bit of investigating I'm finding out this video card is pretty shite (work owned machine), and I didn't have the gp enabled in performance prefs. I had been using such an old version of PS previously I wasn't aware there was a setting for this, frankly. Per some other threads I found, I updated to the latest graphics accellerator drivers for it as well, but unfortunately the enable gp option is still greyed out, so I'm guessing it just won't run this onboard gpu doesn't meet some minimum system requirement or something. Thx again.

No Lighting Effects filter?
Hey I'm trying to use the lighting effects filter but it doesn't appear to be on the menu..I'm using CS5 on Mac OS X 10.6.8
I've tried opening a new document in 32bit mode and it doesn't seem to make a difference..I read that CS5 automatically installs in 64bit mode
so I shouldn't need to modify anything?
Any Ideas?
Thankshttp://forums.adobe.com/message/3490036#3490036

Using the lighting effects filter causes my CS6 to crash
Hi,
I read other threads with people have issues with their PC, but I am not able to follow them to correct my issues.
When I open a JPEG file from my mark iii into CS6, I try to start a new layer and then add the lighting effects filter. CS6 crashes (the little effects comes up on the screen and the little blue circle goes round and round). Nothing happens, but if I check task manager it says photoshop is not running.
I have windows, 16GB ram, and am using a small percent of my memory.
How do I see if I need to update my video card and how do I do that?
Thank you, MicheleHave you installed all the Photoshop updates?
And have you checked your GPU maker's website for updated video card drivers?
