Lightning Cables Poor Design and Quality?

To charge my iPad 2 and iPhone5 I have purchased 4 extra OEM lightning USB cables 1 each for my car stereo, home, office and studio plus keeping the original for my laptop case.  I like the small foot print of the newer cable, but already 2 are misshapen and 2 have split the outermost insulation near the lightening/iPhone end.  So, Ive had to wrap with electrical tape over the frayed outside coating near the lightening end.
Anyone having the same experience?
Im surprised at this since my cable use is spread over 6 different cables so none gets that heavy of use. I've never had cables for past devices such as 2nd Gen iPod, Samsung Blade, Palm Treo,  Palm Pre, or Samsung Epic ever wear out after years of use. Even my 5 different MacBook pro charger cables never wore out out in just a matter of months.
Anyone, are these cables under warranty? I tossed the original boxes.
thanks all

All accessories that came with the device have the same 1 year warranty.
As for the warranty on cables purchased seperately, read the packaging that came with them.

  • New lightening adapter poorly designed and quality?

The new lightening pin adapter is terrible.  I have one for a week and today on the way to work the audio just stopped working.  It will still charge the phone but I can't listen through the radio anymore.  This after I was already disappointed in the fact it was not designed to use with an iphone 5 case.  I had to cut pieces of mine out to be able to make it work.  Terrible design and quality!!!

What is your techical support question?

  • Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to iCal that will interface with the Cloud? I find iCal to be poorly designed and not very efficient.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to iCal that will interface with the Cloud so it works on the iPhone and the Macbook? I find iCal to be poorly designed and not very efficient. I waste a lot of time entering information because you can't go to a specific day and enter information, nor can you navigate between months and add information on a specific date by clicking on the date. You can't easily scroll month-to-month and once you do by scrolling through nine months to get to where you want to be, you cannot enter information by clicking on a specific day in the month and entering information. I just called Apple and they verified that this is the way it works. You cannot go to a date and enter information, you keep getting thrown back to today and then you have to go into the calendar and change it manually on the screen. It is just not efficient.

    APC, CyberPower are reliable.
    Look for 1500VA. As example:

My two month old iPhone lightning cable is suddenly corroded and not working. Any solutions to this apparently common problem on the horizon?

You bought a used iPhone. Amazon is not an authorized supplier of iPhones, nor are any of the 3rd parties that sell iPhones there.
You can make an appointment at the genius bar and have it looked at.
If you are very very lucky, it is still under warranty and it wasn't opened or otherwise tampered with before you bought it. In which case, Apple will replace it under warranty.
If it's not under warranty, they will replace it for $199.
If it has been opened or tampered with, they won't touch it.

  • Lightning cable contacts arced and burned

I've had my iPhone 6 for about a week now. I plug it in every night to charge, just like I have with all of my other phones. This morning I woke up and the phone was still at about 25% charge, though it had been plugged in all night. I took the lightning cable out ant noticed that there was some significant black marking and pitting on the contacts, which looked a lot like what happens from electrical arcing. When I took plugged it back in I got the "this charger isn't recognized..." warning. I tried again and everything seemed to work, but this has me concerned.
Pictures of both sides of the connector:

Take it to an Apple Store genius bar ,along with the iPhone 6

  • Have dock, have AV cabling - Poor TV Picture Quality

Either I have it hooked up wrong, or the picture quality is just plain bad.
My guess is that it is just gonna be bad when transfering the signals from a tiny little screen to a large 42" TV.
    Anybody got any tips????
    Thanks,
    Froggy

You are guessing along the right lines there. Stretching a picture from ~2 inches to 42 inches is an issue. iTunes supplies 640x480 resolution for video files. This resolution stretched to fill 42 inches doesn't look very good.
Personally this is the reason I never went for Apple TV.

  • Lightning cable shorted and caught fire.

Anybody have thier lightning cable shot out and catch fire?  That was fun.
The lightning end of the cable had the rubber around the cable melt and spark and smoke and flame before me putting it out.

    No.
When connected to an Apple power adaptor?
If an Apple cable and power adaptor, call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby.

  • Lightning cable petition

Ok, that`s really silly, that lightning cable is so low quality, that it just can`t live more then a year. My **** nokia 8800 charging cable is used for 10 years. It costs 1/10 of a price of a lightning cable and it just works and looks like new! I got plenty micro USB cables, which costs $0,99 and are way more durable.
Please, make god **** NORMAL cable without that tearing ****, that just tears apart on any case.

I have 4 30pin cables that I use one from ipod touch 1g, one from ipod touch 3g, one from iphone 4 one from ipad2
    all still work
wife have her iphone5c lightning cable after a year
maybe the trick is when we disconnect the cable we don't yank the wire we disconnect it by pulling the plastic plug which connects to the ios device

  • CISCO 2125 very poor design or i'm missing something?

CISCO 2125 bad design by Cisco, product development should revise.
I noticed Cisco product sales support staff is pushing 2125 WLAN controller as great WLAN solution. They got me into considering one as something what will work just fine.
I strongly disagree, this product is extremely poor design and it is missing gigabit port for LAN connection.
This product will support 25 APs with its eight 10/100 Mbps ports. Only 6 APs can be linked per port. So for 25 APs you are already using 5 ports. Per manual POE ports 7 & 8 should not be used for anything other than single AP so that leaves you with only 1 port #6 to connect to your LAN.
Yes, that is true, 100Mbps for all the WLAN users on the 25 access points and product is advertised to support high speed N wi-fi capable of doing 300Mbps per user node. What a nonsense? makes no sense even for lightweight use.
Makes you wonder who approved such product for production and what a bad design on the $6K piece of equipment
CISCO please put a Gigabit port on the 2100 series or stop marketing and pushing such poorly designed product

I don't know who you discussed your design with but you were not educated on the use of the product very well. The 2125 is meant to support more than 12 APs in a very light client deployment of 20 or fewer users. If you need more horsepower then you need the 4402-25. This is a reseller issue and not a Cisco design issue. I have deployed over 300 2100 series controllers and the only problem I have is with customer education. See the attached guidelines.

  • Will Apple replace a faulty lightning cable that was purchased separate from iPhone?

I bought an iPhone 5 along with a spare lightning cable from Apple's website in September. Since then BOTH lightning cables have failed, and there is NO sign of physical damage or abuse on either one. I called AppleCare, and they agreed to replace the one that came with the iPhone, but the senior advisor I spoke with rudely told me the one that was bought "separately" for $19 cannot be replaced, nor refund issued. I thought that it would be covered under manufacture's warranty. I've also heard rumours that if you take a faulty accessory to a genius bar they will gladly swap it out for a new one. Only problem is I don't live near an Apple Store. I was thinking about calling AppleCare back and see if I don't have better luck with a different rep. Any thoughts on this?

    From Apple's warranty page.
Your Apple-branded hardware product is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase ("Warranty Period"). If a defect arises during the Warranty Period, Apple, at its option and to the extent permitted by law will (1) repair the product at no charge using new parts or parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability, (2) exchange the product with a functionally equivalent product that is new or equivalent to new in performance and reliability, or (3) refund the original purchase price. This warranty excludes damage resulting from abuse, accident, modifications or other causes that are not defects in materials and workmanship.
If you choose to call applecare, they can arrange to ship you a replacement, but you will have to agree to a "hold" on a credit card until the defective cable is received back to the factory.

  • Is lightning cable a bad design?

I have gone through 5 cables within my household.  (2 Iphone 5's).  2 were original and 3 aftermarket.  There does not seem to be a difference between durability, if anything the aftermarket with braided cover seemed to perform the best.  This is new to the Iphone 5, the cables for previsous  Iphone/Ipod products lasted until the product was replaced.  (we acturally gave away cables to friends as spares).  So my questions is what is Apple going to do about this?  I am pretty sure that Steve Jobs would not have sat on this and not taken swift action to permanently fix this problem.
Is there a fix?  Is the design of being able to install the plug in either side the issue that makes it so delicate?  Does this mean that we will have to wait for an Iphone 6 to resolve?
I am very dissatisfied with my first Iphone.

Alan, I did take the two cables back, they were quite well prepared with the replacement cables and admitted that they had quite a few of the replacements for the new cable whereas the older style not so much.  They were not immediately prepared to replace the cable that had simple broken off inside the phone  but were happy to replace the one that stopped working.  Upon pushing for a replacement for both they agreed.
So for anyone with a lightning cable that either stops working or works intermittently, Apple will replace them no hassle.  For anyone who finds the idea of replacing these cables regualarly, to be a problem, no solution has been found.

3rd party email addresses have to be deleted on every synmced mac product, although I have 1and1.co.uk and my imac updatetes the mails in that account from mac mail.
Yahoo etc is a 2 step deleting process but good to get your emails pushed when on the go.

  • TS2634 Why does only the short lightning cable supplied with my iPad work and longer cable don't?

I have the latest iPad purchased through Kogan. It is a 64mb with retina display. It will only accept charge through the short cable supplied. I have purchased (3rd party i admit) longer cables to use for charging so I can sit at a sensible distance from a power outlet and still work on my ipad. I have now tried four separate cables from two different suppliers and none work. Curiously the last two work perfectly on wife's iPad which is identical except for being 32mb. I don't wont to now spend $25 on the longer cable now available from Apple to find the same result.  Anyone else experience this fault?

The lightening cable is not a simple cable. It has active electronics within it and is quite clever in that the pins being used are changed depending on how the cable is being used and what is connected.
The longer the cable, the more the level of the signals on the cable will drop. This drop is sometimes enough to properly transmit and receive power or information/data. This drop is clearly too much for your iPad so it does not work. Your wife's iPad must have a slightly better tolerance on this and therefore works but it probably only 'just' works.  iI would recommend that you do try Apple's cable as it is, no doubt, much more expensive, might have higher quality and will therefore work better.  If the cable from Apple and your iPad do not work then you have something to ask Apple about - possibly a swap of or your iPad but I would guess that the Apple cable will work.

  • My original Apple charger and lightning cable doesn't charge my iphone 5 and ipad 3rd generation.

Both my devices are low in batt and i need to to use it tomorrow for work. Who would compensate my losses???
Pardon me i'm not trying to create a scene here. When i first gotten my iphone 5 (new and sealed) and before upgrading to ios 7, everything works fine. After i upgraded to ios 7, the phone main camera lost its focus after a few days usage. Fortunately the phone is under warranty and was replaced at an authorised lab BUT unfortunately i lost a fair deal of data (sms, whatsapp chat history) along the way, although most of the things have been backed up. Since there is no turning back, there is nothing i could do but to face it. And that's not all...
After a good usage of just 3 weeks, with the exact same charger and cable (both original from that came with the phone), it suddenly failed to charge. I have tried plugging it in and out and still to no avail. By the way i have not mention, the ORIGINAL lightning cable sleeve gave way after just a few weeks use. And do mind that it was HOME USE. Havent been brought out to use roughly.
And guess what, I JUST TRIED PLUGGED THE ORIGINAL LIGHTNING CABLE TO A SAMSUNG CHARGER AND IT WORKED.
I hereby swear to God that every word i said here is nothing but the truth. Not spamming. It has already caused me countless inconvenience but still i will bring the charger and the phone to the authorised lab once again to have it checked, and looking forward to get an explanation.

Both charger and cable are covered under warranty as well.  Get them replaced.
    Who would compensate my losses???
    Nobody

  • HT4623 I was updating my iPod Touch 5 iOS from Ver 7.0.3 to Ver 7.0.4 and my iPod locked up. Can not reset. The only thing I get is a picture the lightning cable pointing to a circular iTunes icon. Any idea on how to unlock my device? Thanks. Stroke72

I was updating my iPod Touch 5 iOS from Ver 7.0.3 to Ver 7.0.4 and myiPod locked up. I can not reset or restore the unit. The only thing it will do is show me a graphic of thr lightning cable facing up to an arrow and then to a circular blue iTunes icon. I interpert this to mean "connect the iPod to my computer thru the USB cable while iTunes is running. I do this and nothing changes. Total lock up. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
