Lightroom 1.0 Library Conversion

We where using a beta version lightroom and really liking the features so when the beta expired, we purchased a licensed version and installed it. After the install, Lightroom offered to convert the library which we accepted.
We where using a 'yyyy/mm/dd' organization and now when we look at our library we see things like:
01 at C:\Documents...
01 at C:\Documents...
02 at C:\Documents...
What happened? How can I fix this?
If lightroom is gonna advertise itself as the photo management software, the last thing it can do is screw up someone's library.
Thanks.

Not if, it did. Check the Help file and read everything you can on the forum. Basics at

  • Lightroom 3.5 - Library automatic syncing between two Macs?

    Hey there you Lightroom-Masters!
I am diggin' deeper and deeper into Professional Photography and am now using two Macs two develop my my .DNG RAWs.
In my Livingroom stands a 27" iMac, which is great to develop them further, and when I am on the road I am using a 15" MacBook Pro.
Thing is: the iMac has a Library of roughly 40.000 Pictures, the MacBook Pro is mostly used when I am not home for editing. Is there
any way I can sync my Librarys via Ethernet to each other? That way I wouldn't need to re-edit my shots again on my iMac, or export my
whole catalogue and push them around via my own network...
I hope one can understand my problem, if not I'll try hard to explain it further...

Given the amount of images and the idea to stay portable (I am carrying around 10kg of Equipment + the MBP) it is not an option to keep the catalogue saved on a portable FireWire (or Thunderbolt Drive). I just need a solution to sync the processed images with my iMac, best would be via my home network (as I don't need to sync it when I am abroad or else). Simple as that...
The second idea from you, Hal, is more feasible for me. I'll test that out as soon as I can.
I am still wondering why Lightroom hasn't got that function right away... I can't believe that I am the only one wanting such a feature?
But thank you very much, Hal!

  • Lightroom:  Converting entire library to DNG

I'm intersted in converting my entire library to DNG in Lightroom 5 without losing any quality and
    maintaining the most flexibility possible.
Currently I have all of my folders organized chronologically.
Unfortunatley, over time I have switched back and forth between xmp and catalog based metadata which
has left some folders with xmp and others without.
I want everything to be consistent and ultimatley more efficient for Lightrooms performance.
What is the cleanest, safest and most comprehensive steps to accomplish this?
What boxes should I check in the "covert to dng" dialog box?
Lossy will reduce the file size but compromise quality, correct?
Any other tips for things that come up along the way would be greatly appreciated.
    All the best,
    Alex

•the file is the same quality and yet a smaller file
Most of the size reduction comes from reduced jpeg preview, raw data compression is about the same. Save fast-load data, xmp, and a full-size/high quality jpeg in there and it will be bigger than the original raw. Don't take my word for it - do the test!
    Alexander Herring wrote:
•dng allows the option to turn on FAST MODE in Lightroom which is up to 8x faster
    That's pure crap.
    Alexander Herring wrote:
•no need for a side car xmp, which make the file more easily transportable
Whether sidecars are a net plus or minus is a subject of constant debate in this forum. I keep all my raws in proprietary format, but frequently give other people DNGs, in order to assure the sidecar isn't dropped. But I wish sidecars were an option for all file types including DNG & jpeg...
    Alexander Herring wrote:
•dng is non proprietary which is more stable for archive becasue it's an open source
Remember: you can convert to DNG at any time, but you can't convert back. Well, actually, you can revert with a little help from UnDNG.

Having not taken such a large step like this with my entire library I thought it wise to see if anyone had and if there were any pitfalls
by doing to much at a time, etc
Lots of people convert to DNG and are proud of it - the only practical problem you may run into is if using non Adobe-converted-DNG compatible software. I mean, if you try 100,000 at once you may not make it through, since Lr often has memory leaks which can gang up, etc. but you can always restart.
    Alexander Herring wrote:
Ultimatley for me, having my files in an open source format make me more comforable about the future
In my opinion, the warm fuzzy feeling you get converting to DNG is the only good reason to do it (or the main reason anyway).

  • Aperture 3 to Lightroom 4 GPS metadata conversion

Good day.  I'm needing help converting GPS data created in Aperture 3 to the images so that I can pull this information into Lightroom 4 (which I'm currently under the 30 day trial period but despirately wanting to change to!).  Does any of you have any advice on how to do this?  Please help!!!
    Chris

    John,
Your advice continues to be spot-on, however, my ability to understand and implement appears to substantially lag when it comes to it's use.  Here's my steps (if you can let me know where I'm messing up I'd appreciate it).  I've exported the originals and the accompanying metadata in a .txt file, which I then converted to a .csv file to make it compatable with LR/T.  After installing the plug-in and importing the images, I selected Library > Plug-in Extras > Import Metadata using LR/Transporter.  After this, I get a window and select my .csv file (everything's beautiful to this point! ) in the "Input File" box.  What do I need to do at that point?  I see the latitude and longitude in separate columns, as expected, in the .csv file, along with other data; the latitude is expressed as (i.e.,) 41,5688700076N and longitude expressed as 87,39.35256521W.
Thanks again for your continued dedicated assistance!

  • New Thunderbolt drive, How, or Do I even need to tell Lightroom where the Library is?

I have learned, over time, to be very carful with Lightroom and now is no exception...
I copied all of my files, the complete library of photos, over to a new Thunderbolt hard drive. I then erased and renamed the old firewire drive and now use that for a backup.:
My question is: When I opened Lightroom it acted as if nothing had happened and all of the photos are showing. What is Lightroom doing? Is it using the old drive which is now a backup even though I renamed it? or, is Lightroom 5 so smart that it sees the new Thunderbolt drive and library and just decided on its own that 'this' is what is going to use?
I have no idea what is going on, but since it is day 1 I want to be sure Lightroom is using the correct library, not the backup.
Can someone help me determine that things are in place and working as they should?
    TIA,
    Ken

    JimHess wrote:
I apologize for having to ask so many questions. But what was the name of the old drive before you renamed it? Additionally, if you go to the library module and right-click on one of your images, one of the options in Windows is to "Show in Explorer" and on the Mac I assume it would be to "Show in Finder". If you click on that option it should open your system browser and show you the folder where that file is located. And at the top of that window you should be able to see the name of the drive and folder you are looking at.
The name of the old drive was "LaCie New 2TB" - I will now look at what comes up when I choose 'Show in finder' ( I'm on a Mac)
Okay, back here and what I found was right-clicking on one of the images brings up "“A32Z7813.CR2” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
So, even though I have no question marks or exclamation marks, Lightroom does not see the original Library or Catalog (which one is it?) of original images.
So, I think the question is, How do I tell Lightroom to use the complete original files that are now on the new Thunderbolt drive?

  • Aperture library conversion hung up

Hi. My upgrade/conversion of my photo library to Aperture 3.3.1 has hung up while on Step 8 of 10. It says 0% complete and has been there for about an hour.
I have a huge database. Should it take a while or has it really hung up? Should force quit and restart Aperture?
    Any guidance appreciated.
    Mark

That's a big Library.  If you force-quit, you should then repair your Library, which will take at least a few hours anyway.  I'd let it run for six hours, and see if it reports any change.  It is (unfortunately) not uncommon for Aperture to give no sign of working, even though it is.  OS X's Activity Monitor will often report "Not responding" -- which, presumably, is correct, but doesn't confirm that it is hung.  Perhaps someone with more knowledge can tell you whether an actual hang will show in the Console.
As a couple of reference points, upgrading a Library with only 50K Masters (but 1 TB of data) was done overnight.  Upgrading a Library with several hundred thousand Masters (but less than 500 GB of data) took over 100 hours.  Those numbers are from a MBP 5,5, 2.3 GHz, 8 GB RAM.

  • Mp3 library conversion

Hi there. I apologize in advance if this topic has been discussed before; I've searched for a solution already but came up empty, so here I am. All of the songs in my itunes library have been imported using AAC encoding, however I needed to make a copy of my library in mp3 format so I could import all my songs into the hard drive in my cars radio, which isn't compatible with the AAC format. I created a folder on my desk top and selected my entire library and used the "create mp3 version" option under the advanced menu. Everything went well up to that point; however my itunes lists every song twice. Is there a way to only display the contents of my "itunes music" folder? Thanks in advance.

If you use iTunes to do the conversion, it will always place the new MP3s into the iTunes folder. Once it is done, you can move them elsewhere if you wish.

  • IPhoto Library Conversion Problem - and solutions

I installed iLife '06 today. Then I opened iPhoto and it needed to convert my old Library. After 15 minutes it gave me the "Unable to upgrade this photo library because the current user does not have access. if possible repair permissions ...". Sigh.
Well, this forum had a similar posting and the answer appeared to be to use the "sudo chflags -R nouchg [your library folder path]" command in Terminal to clear all "locks" on all files. I did that but still got the same error message.
My answer turned out to be to go to the Library folder, "Get Info" on that folder, ensure I had "Read/Write" permissions as the owner/group/user, then click on the "Details" part and click on the "Apply to all enclosed items". That did the trick for me.
Apple - if you see this, please change the "conversion" routine to identify these problems before spending time on the conversion process only to fail at the end! The suggestion in the error message to "repair permissions" is useful but not comprehensive enough either.
    Thanks

    Issue resolved.

  • Aperture 3 Library conversion to LR3

I continue to search the web for a way to do this and still maintain the quality and content of my Aperture library.  Has someone come up with a way to programatically convert from A to LR?  Thank you

Yes, I can't recall the menu commands and haven't got Aperture on this computer. But if I remember, the export masters command does have an option for preserving project structure.
Also, I think Aperture 3 has a way to let you save metadata back to the files themselves. So you may be able to avoid duplicating your files. In conjunction with this, the batch change command may let you copy the project name to a keyword, or to another IPTC field like job.
Review how your files are held in Aperture. If they are "by reference", then the above save metadata option may be all you need. But if they are "managed", use the "relocate masters" command first - LR can't see inside the vaults.
There are no prizes for rushing things, so I would recommend doing a test with a few pictures and checking that everything has come across properly.

  • Library conversion issue

Greetings. While searching the Developer Zone I came across a downloadable library file containing examples of HTML POST and GET routines in LabView 7.0. This sounds like just what I need to get the ball rolling on next month's project. My problem is that I'm running LabView 6.1 so I can't open this library. I was wondering if some kind soul with a few minutes to spare could save the .llb in 6.1 format (if possible) and mail it to me. The file is 'Example HTTP protocols.llb' in the Networking/TCP/UDP section of the Developer Zone. Thanx.

  • IPhoto library conversion to Mavericks problematic

Updated to Mavericks from 10.7. Was using iPhoto (I think 8) on the older 10.7 system. After upgrade to Mavericks iPhoto automated database upgrade gets stuck (spinning beach ball at the end of 'Upgrading iPhoto database' stage). My only option has been to force quit this attempt. Have had two Live Chats with Apple about this with no success. I've also checked several of the discussion boards here. Any suggestions for those of us that jumped from an older version of iPhoto to the newer one in Mavericks? Thanks.

What version of iPhoto are you current using?  If it's iPhoto 8 (09) there are problems with it and Mavericks.  If that's what you're using I would upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 via the App Store which will require a purchase.
If you're using iPhoto 9.5.1 and getting that message give this a try:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Suggestion: Lightroom "Finder-like" Library

One area of Lightroom I find claustrophobic, is the Left panel's CATALOG, FOLDERS, COLLECTIONS. One, they are too small. Too much information resides in some tiny real estate.  We are in a visual medium, but the most important organization tools are just small text.
It would be nice to have the option of a larger panel, or perhaps use the central panel like a finder to navigate your collections. Yes, you can select a harddrive and see folders in the Central panel. Wouldn't it be nice if you could customize a desktop, have only the folders/collections you want in the order you want them. Put all your unprocessed selected photos in a collection, top left, and a completed collection/ folder top right.
The finder and explorer have been out for a long time. List view is nice sometimes, but the ability to layout a "Lightroom Desktop" iconically instead of lists would make the workflow more satisfying.

Try John's plugin out and see if it can get you part way there. http://lightroomsolutions.com/plug-ins/list-view/

  • Unable to search Lightroom 4 images after conversion

Lightroom 4 just converted all my images from LR3.  The problem is that I can't look up anything in the "All Photographs" catalog. Although all photos are available in the folders below, all the collections are intact, the All Photographs catalog shows 30K images, and all other functions seem normal, clicking on it shows a blank screen with this message:
    Click "import..." button to begin
Begin what? The import button takes you to the normal import screen with "source" as being the first step. Does it want me to pick all the photographs that are already in the catalog, so that it can... import them?  The catalog already has all this information.  What am I missing?
Right now the only way I can do a search on the catalog is to do it from a folder or collection.  I need to search the entire catalog!
MAc Pro, Mac OS 10.6.8, Lightroom 4.0, Photoshop CS6

I recall several people reporting this in Lightroom 4.0.
The latest release candidate, Lightroom 4.1RC2 has probably fixed this issue. Please download it and install it. Let us know if the problem goes away.
