Lightroom 1.1 vs Nikon punchy pictures

Hey,
there are some posts on this forum about the fact that Lightroom (RAW to JPEG) could not deliver pictures as punchy as the one produced embedded by a D50 (for example) when shooting in JPEG.
Many presets are available out there, trying to match that punch, but in my own opinion, it is not equivalent.
I was really looking forward to see Nikon a little involved in Lightroom 1.1 (instead of trying to keep their secret in Capture) and I wanted to know if LR 1.1 does the job now. If yes, any advices?
Thx !

>So what I am being told is that if I expect the colors from a particular
camera model to be anywhere close to right when using Lightroom, I need
to go out and create my own 'Lightroom Specific' profiles for each
camera?
Essentially -- yes. Your raw data -- whatever
raw data means -- isn't baselined to ISO norms. Even the raw sensor data is pre-processed for the manufacturers technologies. It's only conjecture on my part, but reasonable conjecture, that this pre-processing is a form of marinating the raw broth in favor of the manufacturers secret recipe.
The keys to unlocking all that flavor may very well be using tools that decrypt the manufacturers private metadata. That doesn't mean one can't produce an outstanding image with other software -- you just need precision tools to get there. ACR, LR, Bibble, Capture One and others offer different toolsets and different approaches to do this with.
>How many people do you think have the time, skill and inclination to
build individual profiles specific to their camera serial number?
Hands up anyone? :~)
IMO, there is no paradox here. How many people had a color lab in their studio to process negatives and transparencies? How many farmed that out to service providers? If you love the default profiles a lab offers -- e.g. NX, Bibble, Capture One -- then save yourself from further learning and buy the convenience of their service.
Adobe could develop profiles -- my guess is at much longer release intervals -- to help you see better with, but LR and ACR already provide all you need to learn how to see on your own. They are more of a mechanics toolset than a lab service.
With raw data there can be many different ways of extracting the final product. The more knowledgeable one is about extracting the data, the more control they have over the final product. This approach, while not as convenient as having a lab paid to intervene on your behalf, is IMO, much more preferable as it doesn't tie you down to someone else's recipe.
Perhaps in the future Adobe will offer more camera-maker centric profiles as an option in addition to the default baselines they currently offer. However I'm unsure if that approach would dovetail very nicely with the ACR engine?

  • Lightroom 5 problems with Nikon D4 Camera

Lightroom 5 still presents a problem for the Nikon D4. Pictures are rendered significantly darker than the original shot. The histogram confirms the degrading of each picture. And the visual difference is un-mistakable. Have talked with Adobe twice. They had no solution. When I use the Nik Software View 2 the pictures are rendered perfectly. Why does Adobe say they have fixed the problem when they have not? The Adobe web site suggestes Lightroom 5 is now compatible with the Nikon D4.

Yes, you are right. Thank you for the help!

  • Is Lightroom appropriate for scanned negatives and pictures

What little I have read about Lightroom assumes pictures taken with a digital camera. I have two digital cameras (Nikon D70 and Canon Elf IS 850) which give me reason to try Lightroom, and it has been recommended to me by a big-time photography acquaintance. Photoshop CS3 is what I am using.
I have hundreds (more likely thousands) of pictures I have scanned from old negatives and old prints (don't be surprised, as I am old and retired). My oldest photograph is an 1882 print of my grandfather milking a cow with my mother's comment in her scrapbook: "Dad can milk a cow!" Not surprising, as his parents had a farm, though my mother knew him as the owner of a small town hotel. I've a negative from about 1912 which I successfully scanned.
I have black and whites copied from my mother's scrapbook pictures, black and whites from black and white negatives of my children's youth, and color negatives from when color became affordable.
I think you get the picture.
The question again: Will Lightroom be helpful with these old pictures, be they from prints or negatives?
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I'm using Lightroom for processing and cataloging scans of both old slides and even older prints, and find it very convenient to use. Firstly the develop capabilities are pretty good for adjusting white balance and tone curve either on individual images or batch processing (e.g. correcting a magenta cast or skylight haze on a whole box of slides in one go). My slide scanner does a decent job of auto cropping the slides though I imagine LR would be good for this if not, however I do have to manually crop and straighten scans of prints from my flatbed scanner, and the lightroom UI seems to me to be good for that also.
I have also converted my initial 16 bit uncompressed TIFFs from the scanners to DNG, saving a fair amount of space (~30%). Some would argue this is totally unnecessary as you could compress the TIFFs instead, but I find the conversion to DNG within LR very easy to carry out, and I also find it gives better (lossless) compression especially on the somewhat grainy 16 bit scans. Once I'm happy with all the color and tone curve adjustments I'll probably produce 8 bit LZW Tiffs to archive and maybe discard the still huge 16 bit DNGs (depending on the cost of storage at that time).
I think Lightroom is also very good for the task due to the integrated nature of the DAM and Develop tools - it doesn't force you into a fixed sequence of working (such as having to do developing before cataloging and other metadata operations or vice versa).
EDIT: I just realized you're referring to Negatives, not slides, so you might find the Develop tools a bit harder to use as LR isn't optimized for handling non-camera images especially negatives, though as someone else noted there are some work-arounds for handling negative conversion. However once you manage to produce positives somehow, I'd definitely recommend LR for further work.

  • Lightroom 4 raw files Nikon D600

received lightroom 4 with my Nikon D600 & can't import raw files.  It says it does not recognize the files & also can't view the thumbnails.  using a card reader

That camera requires at least Lightroom 4.3.  If you have only installed from the disk that came with your camera you need to update your version.  The last version you can update to is version 4.6, and that will support your camera as well.

I have loaded directly into Lightroom using import and via Nikon Capture NX2. RAW files display fine in Capture.
In Lightroom, blank previews are created for each available image, with the message "Preview unavailable for this file."

Often, this error message means that you have used some version of Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer, and this has corrupted the files. There is a fix which uncorrupts the files at http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
But you said you get this message when you "connect my other camera Nikon D3100", the key word being "connect", and this doesn't really fit the description I just gave. This error message normally happens after you have transferred the photos to your computer via Nikon software, not when you connect it. So ... maybe you need to explain a little more ... what exact task (what menu options, what are you clicking on, what are you trying to do) when you get this error.

  • Will Lightroom 4 ever support Nikon's D4S net files? If so is they an idea of the release date?

Will Lightroom 4 ever support Nikon's D4S net files? If so is they an idea of the release date?  I don't mind upgrading to 5 but unfortunately it doesn't work with my OS for Mac and I shouldn't have to upgrade both and don't want to...

Well BAD BAD me... I ASSUMED it worked because I could install it on my mac 10.6 but guess what... 8.3 won't support the D4S files.  I swear I am in a never ending loop of hell.  I really shouldn't have to upgrade my WHOLE operating system AND buy the newest version of Lightroom that I don't need just because I got a new camera. THIS IS CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lightroom 4.1 and Nikon D700 in Tethered Mode

Lightroom 4.1 is not seeing my Nikon D700 in tethered mode.
(I'm on a big Mac Pro running 10.6.8.)
The Nikon has the latest firmware.
I have started the computer, the camera and the software in different sequences always getting the same result---No Camera Recognized.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

The D700 does not require a menu selection setting adjustment for tehtered shooting ... it is accomplished directly via the camera's firmware. Same for D800/D800e/D3s/D4 and the D300s ... and several other Nikon models ...
There were some problems reported for tethered shooting with OS X 10.6.8 that I don't think Adobe has addressed. Apparently Apple changed how USB connections are handled in that OS version, though other tether software options seem to work ok ... beyond that, you can use the Image Capture.app (found in your Applications folder) ... if the app recognizes the camera it will show the files contained on the camera card, secondly, if you go to File>Take Picture, it will open a dialog window that will allow you to actually trigger the camera with the space bar on the keyboard (or the camera's shutter release) and download the image taken to the folder you select in the option on the top right of the dialog ... If this works, then you know your camera and USB cable are working properly.

  • Lightroom 2.4 - Won't display pictures in preview thumbnail and main panel

I've included a picture so you get what i mean?
I'm currently using lightroom 2.4 which i've upgraded from 2.2 (2.2 actually had this problem so i decided to bite the bullet and upgrade but it didn't help my problem). I tried creating a new catalogue, importing a new photo, syncronising the folders, optimising the catalogue and re-installing lightroom 2.4. I also restored my computer to a couple of days ago. I know it worked a couple of days ago so im not sure exactly whats happening here.
I've opened up other photo editing programs to see if i can view the photos and yes I can.
I know in lightroom when i go to print or web or slideshow it will show the picture but I just don't understand what i can do to resolve this problem. I tried searching on google and its driving me up the wall.
I hope someone knows whats going on here!

  • Just purchased Nikon D610. tried to import 3 images and got this message: The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. How do I fix this frustrating problem. Have been using Lightroom for years also Nikon products without any prior

How do I import images. Have a message that says: The files are not recognized by the raw format suppot in Lightroom. Am using a Mac version 10.9.4. the import is from a new Nikon D610. Am using LR 4.4 Please help Adobe is useless as a support.

Each camera must be supported explicity and your LR version is years older than your camera.
According to Adobe's Camera-support page, you need at least LR 5.3 to work with your D610 NEFs in LR:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
If you don't want to upgrade to LR 5, or can't due to your OS being too old, then it might work to use the latest DNG Converter and create DNGs from your NEFs, which should open in LR 4.x.  You can find the DNG Converter here:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates

This was helpful, Julieanne, however, I have one more question on custom sort order. I am trying to sort a Collection that is made up of photos from several different import files. It's a vacation collection where I have created a different file for each day of the vacation as well as by who took the photos. So i have a file for my daughter's shots, my shots, my son's, etc, to keep things organized. Now that i have selected the "best of" from each original import file, I have created a new User Collection where I am putting them all together. The problem is, my entire Collection won't sort. I want to sort them all by capture time, but LR keeps grouping them by the original file source, and only sorting by capture time within each group. Can you help?
