Lightroom 1.4 & Nikon D5100

Hi,
I'm running Lightroom 1.4, but when I try to upload RAW files taken on my Nikon D5100 I get an error message saying the files are either unsupported or damaged.  Is it possible to edit Nikon Raw files on Lightroom?
I'd be grateful for any advice,
Chris

Support for the Nikon D5100 was provided in LR 3.4.1 in May 2011 so the options are
1. Upgrade to Lightroom 3.5 the latest Lightroom version or
2. Download the latest DNG Converter from the Adobe website and convert your .nef files to dng. Lightroom 1.4 will then be able to work with the dng files. Keep the original nef files for use with the Nikon software as it does not support dng files.
That said the upgrade to LR 3.x is a substantial improvement from version 1.4 and well worth the price of upgrading around $90. Many new and improved features including an updated processing engine, sharpening, noise reduction and lens correction function. You can download the trial version and use the full functionality for thirty days and make an informed decision.

  • Lightroom 3 and Nikon D5100

    Hi,
I just recieved my Nikon D5100 today and it looks as if Lightroom doesn't recognize raw for the camera.  It worked perfectly with my Nikon D5000.  Does anyone know when Lightroom will support D5100 raw and if there's a workaround until it's officially supported?
    Chris

    I'm in the same situation.
    Failed options:
I could use NX, but then I would end up with jpegs or tiffs, neither of which is my permanent storage format (DNG), nor a viable alternative (not being raw).
I tried to install Adobe DNG converter, but it prompted me to install their app manager, which then said it couldn't install DNG converter. (DNG converter 6.0.3.79 does not recognize the D5100's NEF files.)
Preview and Quick Look don't recognize them yet; no OS X support.
    Read-only:
Xee does open the D5100's NEF files. (Version 2.2 is current from http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee.html .) It is designed for viewing, not editing; I use it for my first preview/cull step (sometimes).
The GIMP also opens the D5100's NEF files. (Version 2.6.1 from http://www.gimp.org/ , which says it uses UFRaw 0.17 which in turn uses DCRaw.) However, no option to save as DNG.

  • How can I share (e-mail) NEF files shot with a Nikon d5100 in Lightroom 4.4?

I am new to shooting RAW NEF and then sharing them in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.4. How do you share (e-mail) NEF files shot with a Nikon
D5100 that have been downloaded into Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.4.? Isn't there someway to convert to JPEG for sharing. I have 50th wedding
anniversary photos taken and want to share with family and can't. Thank You for any assistance on this problem.

If you use the inbuilt email option your NEFs would be automatically converted to Jpeg, in accordance with the settings you choose bottom left of the email dialog box (or you can setup your own specific settings).
Alternatively you could export to Jpeg, then attach the exported files to an email outside Lightroom.
Or you could upload them to a web hosting site such as Flickr or Picasa, or maybe use Dropbox or similar.
Bottom line is there are lots of ways of sharing your pictures with your family.

  • Photoshop CS3/Camera Raw and Nikon D5100

    Hi,
I have Photoshop CS3 and a Nikon D5100 and I am unable to open my RAW files.
    Any ideas?

    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
The D5100 has been supported since Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 6.4 which is only compatible with CS5 and later. CS3 is too old.
    Either
    Join the Cloud, or
Join the Photoshop Photography Program, or
Buy Lightroom 5, open the Raw files, save to TIFF then edit the TIFFs in CS3, or
Keep CS3. Download the free Adobe DNG converter and convert all your D5100 Raw files to DNGs. Then edit the DNGs in CS3.

  • Tethering for Nikon D5100

    Hi there,
I'm wondering if the Nikon D5100 will be working with LR 4 in the near future? I took a course over the summer and purchased the software. I'd love to use the tether feature but it isn't listed as supported yet.
    Thanks!
    Elizabeth

    We do not know.  Sorry.
You can shoot RAW+JPEG and use the JPEG files for now. Or go through Adobe ACR and convert to DNG. Or use Nikon NX2 or Adobe Lightroom that will convert D5100 RAW files.

  • Lightroom 4 NEF files/D5100 - fully loaded preview image dark

    Hi Team,
I shoot in raw (NEF) with a Nikon D5100 and I notice that when the preview fully loads, it loads much darker than what is showing for the preview while it is loading.  Does anyone know why this might be?  The image I'm seeing while the image is loading in Lightroom is the image I want to work with, not the darkened image that is showing after the image preview fully loads.
    -photorobot2010

The image that you see while LR is loading your picture is the JPEG that is embedded in the raw file by the camera. LR replaces it with its own preview which it renders from the raw data. Probably you have Active D-Lighting set in your camera's menu. That causes the image to be underexposed, and then boosted when the JPEG is created. LR ignores ADL, so you'd be better off setting it to "off".

  • No RAW Support for Nikon D5100 in Aperture 3.1.2 - any ideas of an update soon?  I am only using the Aperture 3 as a Trial.

Anybody know if Apple is releasing a new update to support the new Nikon D5100 yet?  I am on the Aperture 30-day trial right now.  Thanks.

    We do not know.  Sorry.

  • Can I edit Nikon D5100 RAW photos in iPhoto '09?

I recently shot photos for an event with my Nikon D5100, using the RAW + jpeg setting. I uploaded my photos into an iPhoto event, and both the RAW and jpeg photos appeared in the event. I have read that iPhoto '09 supports lossless RAW file editing, so I selected one of the RAW photos and attempted to edit it. iPhoto entered the edit window, but the image appeared blurry and all of the editing tools were grayed out. Photo editing works fine with the jpeg files in my event. Also, when I double click one of the RAW images it opens it as a gray exclamation point icon.
More information: I am running OS X 10.6.8, and iPhoto 8.1.2. The page at the below link indicates that the D5100 is supported in 10.6.8, without mention of a specific RAW Compatibility update that must accompany the OS. I am assuming that since iPhoto '11 requires OS X 10.7.5 or later this information applies to my use of iPhoto '09, though any RAW compatibility updates on the Apple site for download are either only for iPhoto '11 or already installed on my computer.
Any insights on what may be going wrong? Thanks.

I believe that the 5100 will work on iPhoot 09 and 10.6.8 and these issues:
I selected one of the RAW photos and attempted to edit it. iPhoto entered the edit window, but the image appeared blurry and all of the editing tools were grayed out. Photo editing works fine with the jpeg files in my event. Also, when I double click one of the RAW images it opens it as a gray exclamation point icon.
are due to the fact that iPhoto cannot find the Raw file - that's what the ! means.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Lightroom brighter than nikon view

Windows Vista, lightroom 2.3, nikon d300 shooting raw images. Monitor calibrated using spyder3
If I open an image in nikon view and compare it to lightroom, the lightroom version is significantly brighter than the nikon view display even though the histograms look the same. When the full size view initially pops up in lightroom, it looks the same, but when it finishes rendering it, it suddenly jumps brighter. If I export the image from lightroom to a jpg and compare its histogram to the orginal in nikon view, the exported jpg histogram is significantly slid to the right and no longer matches the one lightroom (or nikon view) orginally displayed for the image. Color and tone seem pretty close. My question - is there some setting that lightroom is using that bumps up the brightness or is it just the difference in the programs? I love lightroom, but its display and the proofs it exports just aren't as good as I'm getting from nikon view

  • .nef Nikon D5100 is not displaying right in Camera Raw

    Hello,
these two images show the exact same .nef file being opened in two different programs. The first one with the blown out colors is opened in Adobe Camera Raw. The second one is opened in Nikons View NX 2 software. This is also the way I see the photo on the display of my Nikon D5100 camera. I really would like to handle my .nef files in Bridge and Adobe Raw and not in Nikon View NX2. Can someone help me with this please? I have Photoshop CS5.1 (64bit) and Camera Raw 6.7.0.339.
    Thanks in advance,
    Thomas

    Hello,
Thanks for the reply. How do you switch the camera profile please?
I can adjust the settings in ACR so that it looks more like the Nikon Software, but it's not easy to match this. Also, when I pull vibrance to -100 for example to regain the detail, a lot of noise appears. You'll have to admit that there is a BIG difference here between the two images. (both are untouched)

  • Which version of camera raw will work with elements 9 and a Nikon D5100? How do I download photos to it?

I have Photoshop Elements 9 and use a Nikon D5100.  I have downloaded camera raw 6.5 but cannot download photos to it.  Does camera raw start automatically or do I have to manual start it?

    That did I, thanks.

Aperture3 won't open raw files from my new nikon D5100. It worked fine with my D40, but when I got the D5100 it wouldn't open the raw files from it. Is there an update for it?

  • Does Lightroom 3 support Nikon D800 Camera RAW

Does Lightroom 3 support Nikon D800 Camera RAW

No, you can either upgrade to LR4 or use Adobe's free DNG Converter to work with your images in LR3 as DNGs.

Use the DNG Converter 8.7 RC at Adobe Labs:   http://labs.adobe.com/
