Lightroom 1.4 won't read RAW images from my camera

I upgraded from a Canon Rebel XT to a Canon 1000D (Rebel XS), and it won't read RAW files anymore. When I try to import a RAW file, it says "file appears to be unsupported or damaged."
I've read that I can download a plugin to solve this problem, but I'm not having much luck. I've downloaded Camera Raw 5.2, which says that it supports the Canon XS, but it's still not working. Perhaps I've installed it incorrectly? Please help. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but another workaround for this common issue of trying to use RAW images taken with a newer camera than is supported by the version of Adobe software you have may be to use Canon software included with the Canon XS to import the Canon RAW images to your PC's hard drive, and then import them using the Adobe software. If they're still not recognized by LR, you'd have to first convert them with Canon software to another format such as TIFF or JPG, which of course, besides being a nuisance additional second step, loses the advantage of having taken the photo in RAW to begin with, though you could do basic white balance and exposure corrections with Canon software on the RAW files before converting.
If you'll be using a lot of XS RAW photos in Lightroom, it's probably worth the hundred bucks to upgrade to LR2 which most users feel is much more powerful than LR 1.4 anyway and therefore worth the charge. The adjustment brushes, graduated filters, and improved sharpening make the upgrade worthwhile, and then LR could import your XS' RAW photos directly from the camera. However, *if* your PC is barely managing with LR 1.4, you may find LR 2.x too slow for your PC. You can try LR 2.x first for a time for free before paying for the upgrade. Check out the video tutorials on the upgrades because their use is not intuitive and you may falsely conclude they don't add much function if you don't learn how to use them.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 won't read raw files from Canon EOS M

Photoshop cs5.1 won't read raw files from canon eosM, what to do?

The EOS M requires at least Camera Raw 7.2 but Raw 7.2 is only compatible with CS6 or higher (CS5 is only compatible up to Raw 6.7)

To open and edit Raw files, either upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud and get the CC version.
Alternatively convert the Raw files from the EOS M to DNGs using the free DNG converter then edit the DNGs in CS5.1

  • Lightroom v2 won't read RAW files from Sony A77

Hi there - just got a new Sony A77 but Lightroom v2 won't read RAW files when I try to import them.  I know I need to upgrade my version of LR (I will be going to v4) but... is there ANYTHING else I need to do or to upgrade in order to ensure Lightroom 4 will read those Sony RAW files?  Thanks!

I don't keep track of what cameras are supported in what versions.  But, IF your camera is supported by the latest DNG converter, you could use it to create digital negative copies of your images.  Those DNG files can then be opened in the version that you have now.  You won't get anywhere near the development quality that you will get with Lightroom 4, but at least you can work on your images with what you have now.
And if Lightroom 4 supports your camera, that is the only thing you can do to "ensure" that you can use your files.  Of course, if you modify them now with the version that you have, you can leave them with those adjustments when you upgrade to Lightroom 4, but if you want to use the new adjustments and the improved develop tools you'll probably have to basically start over on any images that you want to convert to the new PV 2012.

  • My cs4 won't open raw image from my Canon 5D II.  What is the solution?

My CS4 opens raw images from my 40D with no problem.  However, when I try to open raw images from my new 5D II, it says it is "not the right kind of document".  Why is this?  Aren't all RAW images the same?  What is the difference between the RAW image in my 40D, and my 5D II?  Is there a solution to this?

  • CS3 is unable to read raw images from my Nikon D5000.

I'm a brand new user to Photoshop and to this camera.  Camera raw 5.4 plug-in is only good back to CS4.  Anybody have a fix here?

    You have two choices:
    1.— Upgrade to CS5; or
2.— Download the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter and convert your raw NEF files to raw DNG files that you can then open in CS3.

  • Bridge not loading raw images from new camera

I just got a new mark iii camera and bridge is not recognizing the preview. Other folders from my old camera (mark II) work fine. Any ideas? I tried a Google search and someone suggested purging the cache. That didn't work. I am running CS5 on a Mac. Thanks!

Bridge has nothing to do with this.  Only the ACR plug-in can open raw files.  Bridge is just a file browser, nothing more, nothing less.  Bridge doesn't open, edit or save files.
Assuming you are referencing the Canon EOS 5D Mark III  (there are a bunch of "Mark III" cameras around), you just need to update your ACR plug-in to version 6.7.
Note that the Adobe auto updater in CS5 was and remains an utterly unreliable, useless piece of cr@p, so you are going to have to locate, download and install the ACR plug-in 6.7 manually yourself.
    Here's the link:
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Camera Raw 6.7 Update
Follow the instructions on the download page to the letter.
    Good luck.

  • How do I getr my CS5 to read RAW files from my new Panosonic DMC FZ200?

My Adobe CS5 can't read RAW files I'm attempting to PP in it from two new cameras. What  good is having software that is suppose to be able to read RAW files when it won't for new equipment. Surely it should be able to adapt to newer  cameras as they come along.Today I tried downloading a sample RAW file from a online review of the new Canon 5D Mark iii. It starts to open in CS5 but then says it can't read RAW files from this camera either. How do I change that in my Photoshop CS5. I havn't tried it in Elements 10 yet. will it do the same thing and will I need to change the settings there too? I can post process RAW files from my Canon XSi  and XTi  without any problem.

What  good is having software that is suppose to be able to read RAW files when it won't for new equipment. Surely it should be able to adapt to newer  cameras as they come along.
    What Noel said.
FYI, Adobe is constantly supporting new cameras with new versions of Camera Raw.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
But you must upgrade your version of Photoshop in order to run the latest versions of Camera Raw to read Raw files from the latest released camera models. Or join the Cloud and you can keep your software current at all times as part of your membership.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Or run the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all Raw files to DNG then edit the DNGs in Photoshop

DNG conversion requires extra steps - but it's free.

  • CS 5 Extended won't open Raw files from my Canon SL1

My Raw plug-in version is 6.7.0.339. Is there a later version for me to download and install? Do I need to use Adobe DNG Converter? If so, which version?
Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I did search the forums but didn't find an answer for CS5 Extended.
    Thanks!

Your version of Photoshop will not open Canon Digital Rebel SL1 images directly. Support wasn't added until Photoshop CS6 in Camera Raw 7.4.
Adobe stopped updating older versions of Camera Raw to be able to read raw files from newer cameras whenever they released a new major version of Photoshop.  Thus, the version you have is no longer receiving updates and will never directly be able to open your CR2 files.
    You can check this yourself:
First you need to determine when Adobe released support for your new camera in Photoshop. To do that, look at these two pages.  You'll want to find out the earliest version of Camera Raw that can support your camera, then what version of Photoshop can run that version of Camera Raw.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Since your version of Photoshop cannot support your camera directly , you can download and install the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, which can take your raw files as input and put out DNG format files, which your version of Photoshop can open.
Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG)
The DNG converter DOES work, and you will be able to open the converted DNG files with your version of Photoshop, but if you want maximal quality from your raw files (not to mention the convenience and ease of use of directly opening your raw files) you'll want the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe has made substantial improvements in raw conversion quality in recent years.

  • Can't read Raw files from EOS 700D in CS4

How do I update CS4 and Bridge with ACR 5.0 to accept .CR2 files from EOS 700D? Have tried downloading and installing ACR 5.7 but bridge still opens using 5.0. Any assistance greatly aappreciated, thanks.

As i already mentioned support for EOS D700 starts in ACR 7.4 so ACR 5.7 won't open Raw files from this camera.
However, you can use DNG converter to convert Raw files into DNG and import in CS4 aaplication.
The Digital Negative (DNG) format is Adobe’s proposed standard format for camera raw files. DNG files are useful for archiving camera raw images because they contain the raw camera sensor data and data specifying how the image should look. Camera raw image settings can be stored in DNG files instead of in sidecar XMP files or the camera raw database.
You can download the latest DNG convert from following place:
    Windows:

    Mac:
