Lightroom 1 catalog conversion to Lightroom 2 hanging, etc

We just bought Lightroom 2 and are trying to upgrade from 1.4.  When we launch lightroom 2 and go to convert the version 1 catalogs, we are experiencing tremendously long conversion times and the application goes in and out of "not responding" spinning beach ball states.  Eventually the catalog will convert, but upon re-opening Lightroom it similarly takes anywhere from 15-20 minutes to open, with bouts of "application not responding" in the force quit area and spinning beach ball.  It will eventually open, but obviously this isn't practical for use.
We have tried this on numerous version 1 catalogs, and on 3 different Macintoshes, one running 10.6.3, the other 2 10.5.8.  I have tried to delete the previews, as I said moved to different machines, reinstall, etc.  If I create a brand new catalog and import photos into it, all is good--performance seems fine, etc.  I am currently attempting to create a new catalog and then import from a converted catalog, but I am having the application hangs during the process as before.
The catalog in question is around 37000 photos, but as I have read in the forums, it seems like that isn't really an issue.  Particularly when the behavior in version 1.4 was perfectly acceptable and did not have the application hangs.
All machines in question are Intel-based MacPro's or iMacs with at least 4-6G of RAM.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brian

The Previews 'folder' often appears as a file, but on one of my Macs, it 'is' a folder, but in any event, you did it by deleting the .lrdata file. (You can use Show Package contents on that file and it'll open just like any folder.)
What happens when you launch LR 2 and go to Open Catalog and choose the old one?

  • Catalog Conversion Problem

I have been trying to convert a photo catalog from Photoshop Album 2 to Photoshop Elements 9.  The PSA is on an XP system and the PSE 9 is on Windows 7.   The backup and restore both go fine.  The conversion begins and stops right at 27% every time.  I get an error telling me to repiar with original software.  I've tried just about everything I know and have seen on the blogs with no success.  I removed any photo creations from the catalog and that did not help.  The catalog contains a few thousand photos that are really well organized by my 80 year old mother and I'm petrified she will lose them. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.  Neither product is supported any longer by Adobe.

The catalog conversion process is quite buggy, and PSE 6 and later have serious bugs in handling drives.  As a first step in troubleshooting, download and run the utility psedbtool:

Copy and paste the output here -- come to the Web to post your reply, rather than using email, since the Adobe forum software will truncate your reply.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 catalog conversion solution

The Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer failed to convert my Photoshop Elements 6 catalog until I ran the PSE11 Organizer under the built-in Windows 7 Administrator account. I did not find this solution mentioned during my efforts to solve this installation problem. It was not a suggestion I found in Adobe's help files dealing with catalog conversion. So here is a summary for others with this problem.
I installed Photoshop Elements 11 on my Dell XPS 9000 running Windows 7 Pro x64. I retained my PSE6 installation. I have nearly 20,000 cataloged images in my PSE6 catalog.
Problems began when the PSE11 Organizer failed to convert my PSE6 catalog to the new PSE11 format. The process seemed to run to completion, but then an error message said the conversion had failed. The suggestion was to repair and optimize the PSE6 catalog using PSE6, then try converting again. Conversion to PSE11 still failed. I spent a few hours searching for suggestions and solutions and tried each of them without success.
I then found one suggestion that the problem might involve permissions. The suggestion was to right click PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe in its installation folder (which on my computer is at at D:\Photo\Elements 11 Organizer) and run Organizer as an administrator. This also failed. However it did get me thinking about permissions.
Even though my personal account on my computer is an administrator account, I logged off my personal account and logged on to my computer's built-in Administrator account that comes with Windows 7. I don't think I've used that account for any other purpose since I set up this computer 3 years ago.
I then ran the PSE11 Elements Organizer using the Administrator account and the catalog conversion ran to completion and all seemed correct.
However, when I went to the folder where I kept my PSE6 catalog (G:\0-PSElementsCatalog\FamilyPhotos-6), the new PSE11 catalog was not there. Instead, PSE11 had put the converted catalog in the (absolutely awful) default location at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\FamilyPhotos-6). Using the PSE11 Organizer, I renamed the catalog to G:\0-PSElementsCatalog\FamilyPhotos-11(ConvertedFrom6). I then used PSE11 Organizer to move the converted catalog to my preferred location on my G: drive.
    All is now well.
Why did I have to use the built-in Administrator account to do the catalog conversion? What permissions does it have that my personal account (also an Administrator) does not have? Some years ago I encountered a similar problem that involved permissions on a registry key, not permissions on files or folders. Perhaps someone at Adobe can enlighten us.

    One thing puzzles me:

I don't understand why running the exe from the installation folder would have worked.
I would have simply tried to run that exe from its real location :
Sorry, I can't help you more about permissions...

  • Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer catalog conversion

I'm having trouble converting Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 catalog to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer.  I get a Conversion Failed error which tells me to repair with the program that created it.  I have tried several things including deleting all .avi files from the catalog, deleting references to missing files and backing up then trying to convert from an external HD.  I'm running Vista Home Premium on a HP laptop.  The Organizer optimize and repair don't seem to help in this case.
Does anyone have any history with this or advice?

  • PSE10 Catalog Conversion from Windows XP to Windows 7-64

    Hi,
I have a catalog conversion issue when moving from Windows XP to Windows 7-64 while at the same time upgrading from PSE8 to PSE10.
All my photos on the Windows XP machine were in the following folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Pictures
Files were transfered across the network using Windows Easy Transfer to the new computer. I then installed PSE8 and was able to see my photo folders in the Organizer Folder View at the path listed above.
After installing PSE10 the location of my photo files remain in the same folder but are not accessible through Folder View in the Organizer.  I can see all the photos in Date View.
In other words, the PSE10 folder view doesn't show the old "Documents and Settings" path under Computer\C: even if I set the View to show Hidden files.  It does, however, show the entire folder path under "C:\Users\My Name\Pictures" but none of the folders are marked as being included in the Organizer.
There seems to be a Windows alias between "C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Pictures"   and   "C:\Users\My Name\Pictures"   but the Catalog is not picking it up.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi,
You just hit on something there.  After opening the timeline I clicked on one of the bars and Voila! a group of folders appeared in the folder view containing all of my photo folders.  Seems there was a "Documents and Settings" folder INSIDE the  Pictures folder at the same level as all the individual photo folders.
Strange thing...drilling down into the "my pictures" folders ALL folders are marked as having photos in the organizer even though many are not part of the database.
    So, here's the path:
    C:\Users\Paul Valentine\Pictures\Documents and Settings\Paul Valentine\My Documents\My Pictures\
To add insult to injury, every time you click on the "+" sign to expand a folder, PSE10 decides you want to go all the way back to the top of the folder list so you then have to navigate back to the folder you just expanded.  That's a real pain.
So, is there any good way to get things moved "back" to the proper location?
BTW, Thanks for all the great help...and Ken I might just have to try the repair technique if I continue to hit the brick wall...
    Paul

  • Why did adobe photoshop elements 13 stop catalog conversion of elements 12?

I loaded my new adobe photoshop elements 13 fine. but when I told it to convert my 12 catalog to 13 it looked like it was converting up to 100% then it came up with catalog conversion error

If you open the Organizer and go to Edit>Preferences>Camera or Card Reader, do you have Auto Launch Adobe Photo Downloader on Device Connect checked?
Try checking that if you don't.

  • Catalog Conversion PSE 6 to PSE 10 Fails but did it?

I have gone through all of the links regarding problems (repairing the catalog in pse 6, optiizing, reindexing, etc.) and no problems are apparent in pse 6 but I get the "comversion failed..." error when trying to convert to a pse 10 catalog.  Nevertheless, a "temporary" catalog is created and as far as I can tell it seems to be OK.  I have repaired it in pse 10 successfully, it seems to show all of my images properly in the "folders" display mode, my tags seem to work, but it bothers me that pse 10 said the conversion failed.
What's the deal?  I don't want to put a lot of effort and confidence into pse 10 and find out some serious flaw is there after all.

OK, I very methodically did every step in
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/916/cpsid_91690.html
for the third or more time and get the same "conversion failed."  As far as the log file here is what it says:
conversion log: xxxRawCatalog to xxxRawCatalog temp 1
    updating volume for creation 64622
    updating volume for creation 126413
    updating volume for creation 231561
    updating volume for creation 231731
where xxx is just the detailed path to the folders involved.  I don't see any clues as to something going amiss.
    Any further help - anyone?

  • Lightroom 5 hangs on import.  New catalog, from local disk and from SD card.

    Lightroom 5.7.1
    Windows 7 64bit.
    SSD, i5 16gb RAM
jpg or dng from Pextax K3
When importing photos to my catalog the import process hangs and doesn't import anything.
    I have tried:
    Deleting preference file
Importing from Desktop, Folder on HD, SD Card
Folder without Anything but 1 photo
    Folder with Many photos
Created a new catalog and moved all photos across - the problem briefly went away and now is back.
7000 photos in this new temp catalog, but now the problem exists in my main (65k+) and temp (7k) catalogs.

    Things to try:
Detach all USB devices except mouse, keyboard, external hard drives (in other words, phones and tablets and anything else), try importing
Temporarily disconnect from internet, disable virus checker and firewall, try importing

  • PSE 10 to Lightroom 3 catalog conversion

I have a PSE10 catalog and want to convert it to lightroom 3.  Is there a way to do it?  Thanks!

Let me preface my comment by telling you that I'm new to LR too, and started fresh with it rather than importing from another type of photo management software.
Considering that they are both Adobe products, it may be as simple as opening your PSE catalog in LR. Launch LR and under the file menu, Open Catalog. I would make a copy of the PSE catalog first.
Hope this works for you. Good luck!

  • SOLUTION: Beta Camera Profiles Cause Lightroom to Hang

I finally found what was killing my LR2 install. I was moving and processing images when the CPU went to 50% (one core at 100%).
I ran a file monitor program and discovered LR2 was scanning *all* the camera profiles for each image selected. This is pointless since I had them all set to ACR 4.4!!!
So if you're experiencing hangs, go visit the following directory and delete the profiles:
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles

Thomas, I have a few questions, if you don't mind:
"When you say scan every profile, do you mean all 300+ profiles"
Does that mean that the Camera Profile Calibration Beta packages every profile available to Adobe in the download? Thinking about it after reading this post, I only remember choosing the OS being used.
"or just the 10 or so profiles for the camera model you select?"
I didn't think that we selected the camera model, instead thought Lightroom determined the camera used (presumably from the camera model information listed in the photographs metadata) and made the profiles for that camera available in the drop-down list.
Will Adobe consider making camera profiles for each camera model available as a separate file, then let the user choose which camera profile(s) they need and download into a "profile folder." If so, it would be nice if the user could return to the download page and choose additional profiles when needed (such as when one buys the latest/greatest camera) and add them to the profile folder without over-riding or or removing profiles previously downloaded.
Without going OT about which camera systems people use and why, I would think that everyone would agree that there isn't any need to load all 300+ profiles when you only need the profiles for the camera(s) one uses. This is especially true if it causes the program to run slower than it would without all those profiles one wouldn't use anyway.
One other thing about the profile presets, if you don't mind - will Adobe also consider adding access to the camera profiles in the the Library Module's Quick Develop area near the Saved Presets option. It would be nice if you could access the profiles without switching over to the Develop Module.
Thanks, in advance, for any response provided.
    Regards, JML

  • Lightroom 4 hangs on import

I just installed Lightroom 4 on my Windows 7 computer, but I am having problems with it:
When I start the program and click on the import button in the lower left corner, the program is busy for about one minute and then I get the message from Windows that the program encountered an error and needs to close. Sometimes the screen changes before the error message and displays "Quelle wählen" (it is the german version of LR. translation "select source") in the upper left corner.
I get this behaviour on every start of Lightroom. I tried already several times to reinstall Lightroom and before the last reinstall, I carefully removed all Lightroom references on my hard disk.
    I have installed Lightroom 4.1 64 bit.
My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1, has 4 GB RAM, AMD Athlon DualCore 4250e processor. There is 35 GB free diskspace on C: (SDD) and 80 GB on E: (mechanical harddisk).
The FAQ says: "What other software are you running?". I am not sure, what is interesting here. I am using Microsoft Office, Firefox, Thunderbrid, Norton 360° Antivirus and the NEC Spectraview Software.
Many thanks in advance for helping with this.

At this point, Tom, I would recommend renaming your Preferences file with Lightroom closed and then reopen Lightroom and let it rebuild the file.
"The preferences file is Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs, located in
    Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences/."
These folders are hidden by default and you may have to enable their view in Win 7
Let us know if this works, please.
