Lightroom 1 upgrade question

So, LR3 is right around the corner.  I have LR1 installed, and I received LR2 (upgrade) as a Christmas gift...
What I'm trying to figure out is this:  Should I return LR2, pocket the cash, wait for LR3, and upgrade then?  I don't believe Adobe has released their upgrade pricing policy for LR.  Anyone have any hints what it is?
--Jason

LR3 is speculatively out in March or April.
The questions would be:
Will LR3 convert/upgrade LR1 catalog or only LR2 catalogs...a LR2 trial might be good enough to convert a catalog, though, but you'd need to have it downloaded already before LR3 was available.
Will LR3 be a valid upgrade path from LR1, and would it be for the $100 that LR1->LR2 was or would it be more?  If your gift was a $100 upgrade and the LR1 to LR3 path is more expensive than $100 then it might not be any savings, and if there is no upgrade path, it would certainly be more expensive to buy a new version for $300.

I am a student who already has LR 4 on Windows 8. I would like to upgrade to LR 5. What is the best way to do so in order for the student discount to be applied?

There is no discount for a student upgrade. The regular upgrade price and the student price are the same from Adobe, $79. You can purchase a standard upgrade from Adobe and install it. You will need both your current serial number as well as the new one in order to activate an upgrade. You can order the upgrade from this website:

  • Can I buy a Lightroom upgrade (from LR3) with a perpetual licence and a student discount? If so, which page do I need? Thanks.

I am trying to buy a Lightroom upgrade (from LR3) with a perpetual licence and with a student discount.
If I go the student discount route on the web U get taken to the 'cloud' options which I don't want.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
PS Is the upgrade worth it in any case??

I believe there are NO upgrades for Student and Teacher editions but you can see here: Products
If the price is the same as an ordinary upgrade you are probably better off buying that because it can be upgraded in the future.

  • Lightroom upgrade will not load when it is opened.

When I load Lightroom upgrade to 4.0 and try to open the upgrade it hangs during loading of the catalog.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and the upgrade does not work.  I'm running Win 7 64 bit.

It sounds like the software equivalent of a heart attack in old age! My prescription would be LR 5.7 used daily.

  • Lightroom 3 question

I imported a number of images taken from products but need to remove the background, Photoshop does not show in the ''open in other application'' for Editing purposes, do I need to get photoshop or can I still do it with Lightroom 3 or do I need to update my Lightroom to the latest version?? Thanks in advance, Cheers, James.

Hi  There, and thanks for the answer! I don't have Photoshop the only thing I have is Light room, can Lightroom do this task or do I have to purchase Photoshop ?? And by the way, if Lightroom can't do that what for to have Lightroom anyway, I would think that Photoshop can do everything that Lightroom can - or am I missing something?
    Cheers,

If you already had photoshop, when you installed lightroom, it should have found photoshop for you. Is it possible the psd file association is not set for photoshop? That can happen if you uninstall a previous version of photoshop with a newer version still on your system.
Check the file association in both the OS's file browser (explorer or finder) and in bridge.
Failing all of that, lightroom should have a third option that will allow you to browse to a image editor of your choice.

  • Another RAM upgrade question

    Hi everyone,
I know there seems to be lots of RAM upgrade questions here but hey thats what forums are for.
    I'm looking to upgrade my macbook's RAM it's currently got 2GB (2x1GB)
Is it possible to purchase 1x4GB and put that with one of my current 1GB sticks to create a total of 5GB?
I would be interested to know if this is possible or if anyone has tried it.
    Thanks in advance
    Scott

This will work if your MacBook is late '07 or newer.

  • Lightroom 5 upgrade question

I have Lightroom 3.6 and want to buy Lightroom 5. Can I get an upgrade or do I need the full program?

You can just upgrade directly from Lr 3 to Lr 5 which is now at Lr 5.3

  • Lightroom: upgrade from trial to full version, how to enter license key?

I installed Lightroom from Creative Cloud (CC) trial on Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit. The version is LR 5.6. I do not want CC, so I purchased the full version of LR on DVD. I was going to reinstall LR from the DVD, but see that it is only version 5.2. I have already done a fair amount of work with the trial LR 5.6 and am worried about losing the catalog that I have created.
So I thought I could apply the full version license key to the trial install, but there is no place to do that within LR. When I bring up the CC master application it shows that I have 5 days left with LR, but still has no way to apply a license key.
I had a very long and frustrating chat session with tech support. In the end I was advised to uninstall the trial, then install the full version. I might be able to download LR 5.6 full and simply install that.
So let me summarize my questions:
Is there any way to apply the license key for standalone full version of LR to the trial version that was installed using CC?
If I uninstall trial version, will I be able to install LR 5.6 download and apply license key?
If I cannot install from download and instead have to install from purchased DVD, will version 5.2 be able to import the existing catalog? Will subsequent upgrade(s) to 5.6 go smoothly?
What about the catalog? Will the existing catalog simply be found during a new installation? Or do I have to manually import?
I've found the community help in the LR forum to be very good - and that is why I am abandoning ACDSee after many years Thank you all for your help.

You should just uninstall what you have installed for LR 5.x, now, then download and install the LR 5.6 update from the Adobe Updates page, and enter your standalone serial number, and things should pick up where you left off.
You might want to go into LR’s preferences (if LR is still opening for you) and see where the catalog (.lrcat) file actually resides on your computer in case you have a problem and have to double-click on that .lrcat file to open your catalog, but my experience is that nothing will seem different after you’ve installed the new version other than the version number will be newer.  The preferences, catalog, and pictures are somewhere different than where the program is installed so uninstalling and reinstalling shouldn’t affect any of it.
LR 5.6 update is here:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
FYI, the CC-LR is licensed by logging into CC, the standalone version is licensed by entering a serial number.  That is why you have to uninstall the CC_licensed version and install the non-CC-licensed version.
It also probably wouldn’t mess anything up to install LR 5.2 from the DVD, but then you’d have to turn around and immediately download the LR 5.6 update, anyway, and it would waste time, so why not start with the latest update.  The update is a fully function program, not a patch to an existing program.  It’ll either find your existing licensing information if you’ve already entered the serial number or ask for a serial number if it doesn’t find anything—which sounds like your situation.

  • Cross platform upgrade question between Photoshop CS5/CS6 and multiple Windows/Mac computers

    Hello,
I'm currently using a Windows laptop and PC running Photoshop CS5 from a Student license I got in college. I am considering moving to an Apple laptop so I was looking at the cross platform update question on the forum that led me here: Order product | Platform, language swap
It's not really clear if I will be eligible for the upgrade, and Adobe support chat sent me to the forum, and that page sends me back to where I started to see if I am eligible. I would prefer to purchase the upgrade outright, rather than pay for the new monthly subscription model.
If I am eligible for a swap/upgrade to Apple CS6, will I still be able to use CS5 on my Windows PC?
    Thanks.

I don't have a definitive answer, but I have a feeling that a student teacher version is not eligible for an upgrade discount.  You own the CS5 perpetual license, and can install it on two computers at the same time as CS6, CC etc.  That will be the case in perpetuity.  (not sure why I didn't just type 'forever' back there, or alert the cliche police 'Going forward')
Photoshop CS6 Extended will cost you just shy of US$1600 according to this Amazon page  The non extended version does not give you the 3D tools, and Photoshop CC comes as the full extended version as standard.  If you got the Photoshop / Lightroom Photography plan at a mere $10 a month, the price of CS6 would keep you subscribed for > three years.  Photoshop CC has a lot of wonderful features CS6 does not have, and will never have, and CC will be be constantly updated 'in perpetuity'. ;-)  $10 a month!  Heck, what's not to like about that?!!!

  • Lightroom Upgrades on Mac Creates Multiple Apps

In the Applications folder there are separate application "icons" for Lightroom, Lightroom 2.1, and Lightroom 2.2. The last two were created when the 2.1 and 2.2 upgrades were installed.
When the upgrades were downloaded to my desktop I executed the dmg files. They installed the apps as separate entities in the applications folder. I deleted the dmg files from my desktop already.
I assumed that these upgrades would overwrite the necessary files from the original ver. 2.0 installation. If I double-click on the ver. 2.0 app it will run Lightroom 2.0. Likewise, double-clicking on the 2.1 or 2.2 apps will run Lightroom 2.1 or 2.2, respectively.
I then have to manually delete the Lightroom icon in the dock and replace with with the one for ver. 2.2. That's easy. But I am still confuddled as to why the dmg files created separate apps.
Question: Can I safely delete the Lightroom and Lightroom 2.1 apps or do I need them to run version 2.2?
Question: how can the upgrade installers be executed so that multiple apps are not created?

    It's "Mac", not MAC! :-)
    Roger and Jeff-
I'd delete the earlier versions, or at least compress them and then delete if you think you may want an earlier version. Taking out of the Dock isn't enough- you have to delete or zip the Application itself to avoid using different versions.

  • Lightroom Upgrade at a client - sucess? - keyword problem deal breaker

    Hi
Just a small report, on how upgrading a client's LR 2 catalog went.
Background: The client is a professional photographer specialized on garden photography. Her customers are gardening and lifestyle magazines who publish her photos regularly as illustrations to various articles. She has a professional Canon EOS 1Ds MK III equipment and shoots exclusively raw. In a shoot around 300 to 1000 images are shot. The Lightroom catalog has around 20,000 images currently.
In Lightroom she uses mostly DAM and some basic development features, images are delivered either as raw of as JPEG images to the clients. Keywording is especially important. She has an extensive hierarchical list of plants most of them multiword keywords with spaces, and lots of other keywords indicating if images were sent to clients and other stuff.
The upgrade went just very well. I exported the catalog to a new intermediate catalog without previews, installed LR3 and imported this intermediate catalog into LR3 generating new previews from scratch. The hardware is modest, and some functional tests (especially switching images in develop, spot tool, and adjustment brushes) revealed that everything performs well enough.
Then she asked me where she would have benefits from using the new version. And then I told the whole benefit story, which can be read everywhere.
    - New process version, better details and noise reduction. She asked where she can see it? Hmm, I switched to 1:1 view changing the process versions, not really much to see on Canon 1Ds Mk III files. Even with noisier files, it was hard to tell, what has actually changed. So only a 4:1 view very tiny changes were visible. The impact on her business? Near to nothing as she does not print large. The differences would hardly be seen in the magazine prints.
    - Lens corrections and perspective control: does not really matter in garden photography, but she could see some occasional usefullness.
    - Publish services: no real need for it
    - Print packages: nope
    - Slightshow improvements: no use for it
    - Performance improvements: nothing visible
    - Effects: completely superfluous
    - New import dialog: at first glance a hindereance, as she has to get used to it
Then she asked: did they correct the keyword handling, when entering keywords witrh spaces? (You know the nasty bug, where keyword completion is broken at keywords with spaces). We checked (I knew it wasn't fixed), and of course she was heavily disappointed. Thus, after 2 years of development nothing new for her, keyword bug not fixed? Of course she said, that I should tell her, when keyword completion works, then and only then would she consider an upgrade.
So, despite all the bells and whistles about the new version, I doubt that for many photographers the benefits are really so overwhelming in the real world. It is a pitty that Adobe continues to neglect the DAM features (some fresh ideas for client management would be great), that existing features aren't consequently implemented (esp. the possibilities to query the catalog, and keywording), and that existing bugs are constantly ignored and not fixed.
So, please Adobe, get keyword completion fixed for keywords with spaces immediately !!! This is what professionals need. A catalog without reliable DAM features, renders the catalog concept to a great extend useless. Please listen!
Disclaimer: As I am not a professional for me the situation is not the same. I just report my experience I had, with a photgrapher, who needs a proper asset management. I recommended Lightroom to her because of the overall package (she moved from Cumulus), so I feel a little obliged to help her in this issue. In my case, as a user of a modest Lumix G camera system, I would consider the IQ benefits more signifcant. I don't know, if this is a general observation.
    Kind regards
    Thomas

So the over-riding conclusion from your experience with just one photographer is that Lightroom is 'useless', and this compels you to demand, in bold type, that Adobe must listen?
That Lightroom has issues and areas for ongoing development is obvious, and Adobe won't dispute this.  But rants like yours add nothing and are unhelpful.  Julie's response is extremely tactful and far more moderate than your post deserves.
    Dear Mr. Webster
I think when you post, you should definitely change your tone. Julie simply answered my original post by acknowledging the problem, your accusation that I did not use appropriate "netiquette" is ridiculous. Posts like yours are a real problem of this forum.
I simply gave a user story example to show that not for everybody the shiny advertised new features provide real benefits and that paying attention to a thorough implementation of features can be equally important. I think Julie has recognized this. And the issue is nothing for ongoing developments. Lightroom supports keywords with spaces, so it has to be done consequently. Keywording is essential for DAM. If keywording gets too tedious or leads to wrong keyword assignments, then DAM is really pointless.
The intention of my post was to point Adobe to an apparently small problem, which has quite a big impact to people, who depend on good DAM features. The issue is nothing new, existed since the first release of Lightroom, but nothing was done about it, unfortunately. Now that Lightroom addressed keywords with spaces even with a new preference setting, it was fair to assume, that they had done something about it with care. This isn't so obviously. The issue was discussed in previous threads, but did not get any visible notice from Adobe. I am glad that this has changed now with Julie's post.
In no way did I say that Lightroom is useless or even that I regard it to be so. I merely said that the catalog concept is to a great extend (not completely) useless, if its implementation is sloppy. DAM starts with data entry and only after doing this, you can use it to your benefit. Therefore it has to be efficient, which currently is not. Lightroom is criticized by a large number of users that it is forcing them into a catalog system instead of just providing access to the file system. Long existing bugs like this, likely proves them right in their view.
The competition (I mean complete workflow solutions) is not really better than Lightroom with respect to DAM features, however, my take is, that the developers should be equally ambitious with the quality of the catalog system as they are with IQ, especially if the achievements in IQ are apparently less relevant to owners of high end camera systems. (I could be wrong with the last statement, but it would be interesting to hear if others have similar observations).
    Kind regards
    Thomas
