Lightroom 2.5 Import always results in "lost files"

Using LR 2.5
Have an existing file folder tree with three levels of sub-folders and JPG image files in the lowest level folders.
Have tried a variety of "Import from Disk" sequences and invariably the images import but then become "lost".  Even after re-installing LR, creating new catalog, and only importing one image it is "lost" and then when I use the find function it complains the filename is already in use.  Left teh "Don't import dupes" unchecked.
Awful hard to not conclude that there is a software bug when LR traverses a filefolder tree.

I am having a recurring problem recently that I cannot figure out.
I have a bunch of photos that I have yet to import into Lightroom so I started importing them in place and moving some into better named directories.
Perhaps you could explain more here ... you import and then move the photos/folders? Are you using Windows or MacOS to do the move? Are you moving the photos/folders in Lightroom? Which?
By the way, I agree with Saskatchewan (however you spell his name) that the most efficient use of Lightroom is not to move files or folders around from one place to another on the same hard disk. You organize in Lightroom with Lightroom tools (keywords, captions and metadata, collections). In the past, before you had Lightroom, folders were both storage locations and organizational tools. Now that you have Lightroom, folders represent storage locations only; you organize your photos using Lightroom tools only. Lightroom tools give you more power and more flexibility than anything you could come up with using folders.
If you need to move your storage to somewhere else because of space or backup needs, then do so, using Lightroom's folder panel; but don't move folders to be better organized and to help you find your photos better because that's what keywords, metadata and collections are for. In particular, your "better named directories" most likely should be keywords.

  • Quicktime "Save As Source" ALWAYS Result In Invalid File

When ever I try to save a file being played in Quicktime 7.0.1 PRO on a web page, the resulting file (although the correct size) always results in a corrupt file:
i.e. "QuickTime cannot open the file "<filename>"
it is not a file QuickTime understands (-2048).
This has only started since upgrading to QT7 and it is also applies to Internet Explorer, so I know this is a Quicktime problem.
If use "Download linked file" in either Safari or IE, the same file plays perfectly. But I can only do this if a link is available and not for an embedded file.
Can some tell me if there is a way to fix this problem/bug.
I have kept the system current with Software update.
    Thanks
    Gary

I upgraded to Quicktime Pro so I could "Save As Source" once the MP3 has downloaded fully into Safari.
It looks like your question has already been answered, so I will only comment that QT Pro isn't necessary in order to save files like MP3s from web pages. Sometimes it takes a bit of extra clicking around to be able to save files to your hard drive, but right-clicking on a link to a file should bring up a menu allowing you to "Download Linked File." In other cases, the Activity window can be of great help, and so on and so on.
For what it's worth, downloading your files as I've described will also get around the QT file association issue.
EDIT: I just took the time to read the link macmenno posted, and I see that Mr. Minow mentions the same approach to downloading linked files from web pages...

  • HTML Import Always Results In Landscape Orientation

I have a HTML that I want to convert to PDF but I need to preserve all the hyperlinks in it (they are to locations withing the HTML page).
I found that the only way I can preserve the links is by reading the HTML directly into Acrobat (9 Pro), which I guess is effectively an import process.
However the resulting page orientation (actual and not just view) is always landscape.
There is nothing in the html file directing this and there seem to be no settings under Preferences -> Convert To PDF -> HTML that are settable.
    <style type="text/css" media="print">
    body{page:portrait}
    </style>
I also tried adding this in various formats but makes no difference.
    hoep someone can help
    thanks!

thank you Steve, that box was already ticked but I saw something in there that when unticked worked for me
Scaling -> Switch to Landsdcape if scaled smaller than 70%
I see one small problem remaining if you might have insight into.
The HTML is essentially a collection of tables and the table width is 100% in HTML. This means it expands to fill the Web browser width.
After scaling during the Acrobt import process, the print is quite small and I think that the PDF conversion is based on 100% screen width.
    So I get this:
If I turn off scaling in the Adobe settings, I get this:
    What I want is this:
I guess I could edit the html to hard code the absolute sizes of the HTML tables etc, but might there be another way.
    thank you

  • Can Lightroom recognize and import gps coordinates from xmp files?

    Hello guys
i have LR 4.2 and using Lion with a MBP.
I recently got gps4cam for my iphone to record gps coordinates.
Unfortunately i imported all the pix of my vacation to LR instead of importing them with the gp24cam app first
so Now i have the xmp files with gps coordinates in a separate file for each photo, but LR even though ca see that file, does not import any of the info on it
Is there a way to force LR to read and recognize those gps coordinates without having to delete all the pix of my vacation from LR, and re-import them to my mac before with the gps4cam app and afterwards import em in LR.?
i mean i cant believe there is not way to do that...
y LR can read and recognize gps coordinates if are on a picture, but cant recognize and attach those same coordinate to the original fine if they are in a separate xmp file?
    thanks for your input guys
    matteo

    I would process differently:
Import your images as usual directly into LR, without the GPS data
copy the gpx-track from your external device to a storage sport from where LR can access it (my choice: same folder as my images).
Use either the map module to populate LR records with the GPS data (as stated by jim1403) or a plugin from Jeffrey Friedl for geo-encoding.
If you want to have the GPS data in your xmp, trigger the save from LR then (cmd s; may be auto-activated in your catalog settings)
Please note that several import problems have been reported by using other software before LR to update something. Do not let your GPS tracking software touch your images, especially if it offers to write into your proprietary raw files, at least not into your only copy of them... I consider this way too dangerous for my precious negatives. If it also creates xmp, then fine.
I am also a happy user of MotionX-GPS.
The real disdavantage of the LR command to read metadata from files is that it is all-or-nothing: it would be so convenient if one could choose which partial sort of metadata (EXIF, IPTC, development, GPS-coordinates, rating+caption+title) - but that would be a matter of a feature request, not for this forum.

  • Will deleting time machine result in lost files?

I purchased an external hard drive and connected it to time machine, however I no longer want all files on the hard drive and only selected items such as my itunes library and pictures. If I delete the folder on the hard drive that contains all the time machine files will they be erased from my computer as well (eg. documents and downloads)?

Avoid deleting the files inside the Time Machine disk via Finder.
The backups directories have many special permissions that can get you into an awful mess if you try to delete by hand. Instead use the 'Time Machine menu > Enter Time Machine'.
Navigate to your Downloads folder, select it and use the gear menu (or right click) to 'Delete all backups of …'. Repeat for other items you want to remove.
It can take a long time to remove all copies.
Personally I think a brody is right to suggest you think seriously about this before you begin. If it is your only backup I would get another disk to make a 'bootable clone' too.
You can also exclude items in Time Machines preferences, however you should not exclude too much otherwise TM is not much of a backup.

  • Lightroom refuses to import RAW files.

    Hello,
I have Lightroom version 1.4.1 (just downloaded the update), and cannot upload RAW files from my Canon 20D or 5D. What happens is that Lightroom will either:
    (1) Upload just 12-15 files, then freeze up. The light on my camera stops glowing red and it says "busy" on the camera LCD display. After waiting 30 minutes I get the spinning rainbow ball on the screen. When I try a "Force Quit" Lightroom does not respond at all.
    -or-
    (2) Nothing at all happens! No images are uploaded, Lightroom freezes up and the camera does nothing.
My setup is an Intel PowerMac with 8 gigs of memory, 3 1TB drives, and an Nvidia GFX 8800 graphics card. I am using OSX 10.5.4.
I tried deleting the plist file at least 3-4 times, tried different cards in either of the cameras, and I always get the same results.
    Help!

    David
Finally I found someone with the same problem I've been experiencing in the last 3 months.
This problem actually started after on LR 1.4.1 but
after I upgraded to LR 2.0, it now freezes half way on import just like you described, it actually take the OS hostage and not even force quit works, I have to force the system to shut down by pressing the power button.
Then I tried to see if I could import with Bridge and I ran into the same problem and had to take the same action.
I have switched cards, card readers and USB ports (used the front and back ports) but nothing seem to work.
But when I use Image Capture to import raw files, it works fine, no problems there.
I also upgraded the PS3/Bridge Camera Raw to the most recent version to be compatible with the LR 2.0 version.
I also have the 20D and 5D but I use card readers instead of plugging the camera directly into the computer.
It seems the problem is the way Leopard reads XMP data, that's something I found on a forum somewhere and it looks like Apple has not addressed this issue yet.
    I'm running Leopard on a 2.8 Gig / 8 core and 4GIGs of ram.
For now, my solution to this problem is to import raw files from the card reader using Image Capture and down load them into my LR library.
    That's my 2 cents

  • Lightroom 1.3 Import Bug

I have a Nikon D200 and typically shoot in RAW + JPEG mode. I upgraded to 1.3 on my laptop a few days ago, and have just done my first import. I was puzzled by only seeing JPEG images in the catalog after doing an import. I deleted them all and tried again, confirming that yes, the CF card had both JPEG and RAW files on it. The import again only showed me the JPEG files. I did the import a third time, this time *unchecking* the box for "Don't Re-Import Suspected Duplicates". Surprise, it worked: I can see both the JPEG and RAW images (I've always had the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" option checked off).
I've always had the "Don't Re-Import Suspected Duplicates" box checked and it's never caused this problem in previous versions.

Hi Melissa. I'm using a Delkin ExpressCard 54 CompactFlash adapter with a Delkin 8 GB UDMA memory card in a Dell XPS M1330. My camera is a Nikon D200 with all the default settings. I'm shooting RAW + JPEG BASIC.
The path to my images on the CF looks like this under Vista:
    F:\DCIM\103ND200
I made the mistake of doing a Lighroom import, then deleting the folder on the CF card before confirming that Lightroom had all the images - Lightroom has never mis-imported on me before, but since updating to 1.3 I'm seeing this frequently. Luckily I ran some memory card "photo unerase" software and was able to get back all my NEF images. It was a sinking feeling though thinking I'd lost them.
I've since done another import, which only copied over the JPEG files. I deleted all the images off the hard drive using Lightroom, then did another import, and without changing any of the settings it grabbed the JPEG + NEF files this time. My next import got both file types as well, though this time I opened the preview portion. Not sure if that had an impact, seeing the NEF files being selected. When the files didn't get imported it was an auto-import pop-up...when they DID get imported it was from a FILE > IMPORT FROM DEVICE. Not sure if that has any bearing.
Let me know if you need any other information. I hope this can get nailed down soon. I'd so more experimenting myself, but I'm on vacation and really need to get down to processing my images. ;-)

  • Is there any collective way to have Lightroom 5 find lost files?

Though I have tried to move folders and files only with Lightroom, I note that a good number of my images shown in thumbnails in Library cannot be opened because Lightroom 5 cannot find the files.  I assume I have moved files among drives accidentally without Lightroom's knowledge.  I also note that I can control click and try to find individual files.  Is there any way to do this find process for entire folders or drives?  Can I import files from a drive (which is the original source of the lost files) in mass and run them through the import function on Lightroom and return them directly to the file from which they were imported?  Would this create a new thumbnail in Library but duplicate the files in the affected folder and drive?

Lightroom isn't going to allow you to import images a second time. In the left-hand panel of the library module you can Ctrl-click on a folder and choose to update the folder location or find the missing folder. Have you tried that?

  • Importing Payroll Results in SAP.

    Hello All,
We are implementing SAP HCM suite and have a question about importing payroll results back into SAP. We are using ADP as our payroll outsourcing parter for Gross/Net and we have a business requirement to bring back the payroll results in SAP. We contacted ADP and the response we got is that none of our SAP Clients have every done same. We contacted SAP and the response we got is this is a consulting issue.
We are currently exploring the possibility of using ULK9 schema to import payroll results for every period from ADP, the question I have is:
Have you been involved in this kind of model for ADP or any other payroll outsourcing companies, If yes how did you handle bringing back payroll results for Off-Cycles, Reversals, Voids?
    Thanks
    Saket

Hi.. this is like running 2 payrolls one with ur payroll partner and one with your system. This is not a very good way of doing it as you will never be able to match the results as you have to always mirrior the configuration, badis, bapis and user exits, abap codes, etc..Moreover please do check if the result import can work for all the countries.
Also, please do think of issues like the patch level update- what's the aggreemnet with you and your payroll partner
also, other risks need to be clearly defined. In a nutshell, this is not a very good idea and there is hardly anone having it as it is like duplicating your payroll run everytime.
If you are certainly looking for an alternate, may be you can use dummy wagetypes (custom ones) to store your results..
If you are looking just to retain the employee history, your payroll partner should have it.. so again its just duplication of data..
    Hope this info helps.
    Regards
    Judith

  • Lightroom 3.4.1 won't import Photoshop 5.1 psd files

I can't get Lightroom to import psd files (they appear greyed out). I have set the Photoshop file handling preferences in Photoshop to "Maximize PSD and PSB File compatibly ALWAYS" and save the file as Photoshop with Layers. The Help doc says that this should save "This saves a composite version of a layered image in the file so it can be read by other applications"
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Steve

    Maybe they are imported already?
If you open a RAW file from LR into PS and save your changes in PS, a psd-file will be created that is imported into LR automatically.
In the Import Dialog the file will then be greyed out because LR is set by default to NOT import duplicates. You can change that by unchecking tyhe box <Don't Import Suspected Duplicates> in the top right corner of the Import Dialog.
In case you cannot see the automatically imported psd-file besides your RAW-file, in the Library Module go to >View > Sort  and select <File Name>.  If <Capture Time> is selected the psd will be at the very end of your filmstrip, because LR equates the time the psd was created with Capture Time.

  • Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error.

    OS 10.5.8
    (gb mem
I have recently exported a catalog from my main database (on a mac) with about 700 photos.  Including negative  files
We opened the catalog on a PC machine in the same version of lightroom. 3.5 camera raw 6.5.  The images were given new keywords and then exported as a Catalog  including Negative files.
The original catalog has been deleted from the main database on the Mac.
The  Catalog with the new keywords  saved across the network to the Mac.
Permissions are open to everyone on the folder the Catalog is in.
When I try and import the catalog in lightroom I can see the thumbnails,
However get this message. I’ve lost many hours trying to get the catalog bak into the main library.
I can open the catalog on its own in  Lightroom, just when I try and import the catalog  I get the bellow message.
I’ve tried importing saving to a new location
    Importing not moving the files
Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error.
I see others have had similar problems however do not see a clear answer.
    Has anybody a solution?
    Thanks Patrick

I'm having this issue as well, and honestly I've *never* been able to get "import from catalog" to work. In my case I have a catalog created on my Windows 7 laptop in LR3.5. I've copied it to an external drive, plugged it into my PC running Windows 7 with LR3.5. And I get the "could not import this catalog because of an unknown error" message.
I've confirmed every image in the catalog I am trying to import is accounted for and isn't "missing". There are no duplicate images between the exported catalog and the one I'm trying to import in.
    Thoughts?

Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto.   I get the following error message:
Some import operations were not performed.
The following files were not imported because they could not be read  [followed by a list of the files I wanted to import]
Thumbnails show up.  LR just will not import them.
Any idea what is going wrong?

If the Import button is not clickable, that means that Lightroom thinks you have no new photos to import (one possible reason is that they are duplicates)
So, you need to figure out why Lightroom thinks that. The way I would do this is to search your Library module for at least one of the photos, by file name. To do this, you would follow all 4 of these steps in sequence:
Click on All Photographs in the Catalog Panel on the left of the Library Module
Turn off all Filters (Ctrl-L or Cmd-L once or twice)
Expand all stacks: Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks
Search for one or more of the photos using the Filter Bar (press backslash), search by File Name

Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.

  • I keep getting the error:  "lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error" when trying to import from a catalog?

I have around 400,000 photos of 15 years so given the high number, I organized all my photos into 6 catalogs to avoid potential problems. All the photos and the catalogs are in a 4TB Seagate external hard drive. I use Adobe Lightroom 5 and I use a PC with the latest Windows Office 2013.
I wanted to have a NEW Catalog of all my rated 1 Star+ photos of all the years in a single Catalog. So I created what I called Star+ Catalog and I was told the best option is to import a Catalog at a time and given that there is no means to filter importing only Stared photos, I would import all the photos and then delete all the UnStared photos. I did that for Catalog Year 2014 but at the end gave me the message: "lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error". It actually had imported around 40k photos from about 50k total. I tried again and again and every time I end up with the same thing. I created another new Catalog and stared from scratch and the same ting happened: the ONLY EXACT 40k or so photos were imported and the rest were not!! When I imported Catalog Year 2013 of around 45k photos, it worked perfectly. But when I imported Catalog Year 2012 of 35k photos, the same thing happened!!
I then tried exporting the needed photos to a new Catalog and that worked.  But then when I try to import them again from my Master *+ Catalog I get the same error again!!
I also tried creating a new Master *+ Catalog and tried to import the Catalogs of each year into it and the same error happened again!!!
Any advice: 1) on how to solve this? and 2) if there is a better and easier way to create this Master Catalog of All Stared Photos of All my Catalogs?

OK, my starting point is that LR can happily contain 400000+ photos, and it's a mistake to create a 1 star plus catalogue as you suggest. Instead, I'd recommend you create a master catalogue of all your photos, which you can then query however you want - 2 star, or a certain keyword, or with "xyz" in the title etc.
If you are intent on going that way, you could try a slight change from what you've done so far. Instead of trying to import an entire catalogue and then delete no-star pictures, take the 2014 and 2012 catalogues and select only the 1 star photos. Then do an Export as Catalog for these items, and import the 2014-1star and 2012-1star into your new catalogue. That may get you past the problem images which I suspect are the problem.
If that doesn't work, or if you follow my initial advice, you're going to need to identify the image where the failure occurs. You may have a corrupt image file, and replacing it from your backup may be sufficient to resolve the problem. Alternatively, it may be a corrupt record in the catalogue, and in this case it may be sufficient to remove the image from the catalogue and import it again. You might try selecting everything in the 2014 catalogue and seeing if you can do an Export as Catalog, creating a clean 2014, and deleting 2014's previews folder might also get rid of a potential problem. Something else is to try the Export as Catalog for images 1-40000, then a second Export as Catalog for images 40002-50k.
So a few things you'll need to try, rather than a magic bullet, and a recommendation to change the underlying direction.
