Lightroom 2.5 so so slow....

I am a heavy lightroom user typically processing raw Nikon D3 files on my Macbook Pro. I have unfortunately recently upgraded my lightroom 2.4 to 2.5 and have promptly slowed my workflow by at least 75%!
Previews are slow to load, sliders do not move smoothly and any update, even small colour changes are redrawn so slowly that this version is really becoming unworkable. None of these problems existed with the same setup on 2.4 version.
Whats going on? Anyone have any ideas on a fix? Version 2.6 in the pipeline?

I do D300 files (same res as your D3 images, so just as hard on Lightroom) on my MacBookPro from two generations ago without any issue. Three things to keep in mind. 1. You need to max out the memory on that MBP. The default it comes with is wholly inadequate for Lightroom use (or any use for that matter. Apple is really stingy with the memory in their default configurations and charges an arm and a leg for memory upgrades). I maxed out mine to 4 gigs and it runs great. 2. Make sure your harddisk has sufficient empty space and is sufficiently fast. You need several 10's of gigabyte free for good speed. 3. If you have maxed out your memory and your machine supports 64-bit apps (i.e. at least core 2 Duo), run Lightroom in 64 bit mode. It makes a huge difference.
Memory is cheap from places like other world computing and newegg (and lots of others) and it is very easy to install.

Hi. Did you trigger a delete data via LR preferences ->Lightroom mobile.
I'm not seeing a catalog connected to your account.
Did you import originals via the connection-kit?
    Thanks

  • Lightroom 5.4 to Lightroom Mobile sync is soooo slow - why no local sync?

I am testing the new Lightroom 5.4 with Lightoom Mobile. What really annoys me is the fact that all photos are going up to the Creative Cloud. I have private pictures which should be private. Always. No upload. No Cloud sync. It is important!
Speed is the next major problem. LR 5 is way too slow for a fluid workflow. But this is mentioned from other users.
What absolutely makes me sad ist the sync speed of LR5.4 to LR Mobile. 100 Photos took up to 4 hours. On a typical wedding I have 2000+ images. Depending on the speed of the first 100 photos I have to wait 80+ hours? Are you kiddding me? This makes LR Mobile unusable. My clients are expecting results fast. Speed is one factor to the next contract.
Overall, I don't want to sync anything into the Cloud. I want a to use my fast local sync via WiFi or USB. Only those two options. I want to sync photos even without any internet connection successfully and quickly.
I'm fine with authentication with Adobe servers for licensing verification. But that's it. The rest should be configurable by the users whether they Cloud sync or not.

Tom, thank you for taking your time to come here and enlighten us with the decision making process behind what was done. Like it was said before here, the Lightroom Mobile so far has been very, very frustrating. I came home very excited to test it and make my dream come true. To be able to take my catalog (or a shoot) with me on the subway, etc and be able to choose the photos on my iPad. See, I am a photographer and I shoot mainly fashion and beauty, so my workflow starts as soon as I finish shooting by importing all images into Lightroom and then going through the painstaking process of choosing which picture to use. I would shoot anywhere between 5-12 looks in a day, around 100 photos per look and at the end of the process I need to choose only one photo from each look. This normally involves going back multiple times to be able to get to only one from each look. The LR Mobile would have been the perfect solution for me, making me able to look at photos while out of the office, on the subway, at home, etc. It would have made my editing process much faster (or less slow). Instead, I've been sitting and waiting for 6 hours so far and only 18 photos showed up on my iPad (from the 500+ that were chosen to be synced from my desktop LR. Now I know it's not my internet that is making it that slow because I have 80+Mbps of download and 40+Mbps upload. And that haven't helped me much as my LR is stuck on "Syncing 527 photos" for the last 5 hours. Most professional photographers that I know deal with a huge amount of photos from a photoshoot. Wedding, fashion, advertising, we all shoot 1000+ images in any given work day. To come home and have to wait 100 hours before we are able to edit on the iPad is just not useful. This will be useful for the amateur photographer that will take photos of their children/dog/flowers and want to be able to show their guests the photos without having to get them in front of the computer.
Now I understand what you said about having to have a centralized place so that all the clients up to date on the changes, and I think that is great but I also think that it's paramount that there's a different way of syncing, a faster, more efficient way. Even if it is, like mentioned, not a "everything in sync" solution. Something like sync the desktop to the iPad and only those two work together. If both are changed before the next sync, a "the 'blabla' catalog has been changed since you last synced, do you want to overwrite it?" takes care of the problem, much in the same way that Photoshop asks us when we are saving something that has been somewhat modified by some external agent between saves. But the beauty of shooting all day, loading everything in Lightroom at night at the hotel and in the morning catch your flight and edit your shoot on the iPad while traveling, or being able to show the clients on the iPad right after you shot the wedding, or (what I was dreaming was going to be possible just to have my dreams crushed when started to use it) shooting tethered on the job and giving the art director the iPad so that he/she can see the shots without having to stay in front of the computer during the whole shoot. Now THAT would be a game changer! That was what I was expecting from LR Mobile but unfortunately got disappointed. I'd pay for the app alone if it did that!

  • Lightroom 2.4 Is Too Slow To Use As A Professional Product

    Hello -
I would like to know how to get Lightroom to respond in less than 4-8 seconds for almost any task.
From returning to Grid mode (4.5 seconds) to adjusting a routine crop and angle (5-7 seconds per move, 60-90 seconds total) to simply shift-selecting three to fifty photos (4-9 seconds) no matter what I do in Lightroom, it is worse that Photoshop 1.0 on a Mac Plus. Really.
Returning to Lightroom from another app - 7 seconds.
Getting the menus to drop down - 4 seconds.
    My lightroom settings:
    standard preview size: 1680
    Quality: High
    Discard 1:1: Never
    write changes to XMP: off
Catalog: 127 mb on F drive (24 gig free)
Catalog: 13.5k photos, 95 gig on F drive
Cache: 6 gig on F drive
    NVIDIA settings: performance over quality
    My computer:
    HP 8730 elitebook
    4 gig ram
    XP Pro, SP2
    Proc: Core 2 Duo T9400, 2666 MHz (10 x 267)
    DirectX    4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)
    Chipset: Cantiga PM45
Video: NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M  (1024 MB)
    (2x) 250 gig 7200 rmp HD
Before anyone says to export to a new catalog and re-import, etc, use a smaller catalog, etc, be advised that I have done all of that. I have imported only 250 images to a new catalog, on a newly installed OS, with Lightroom as the ONLY application. Still it acts this sluggish.
I have scoured the boards for solutions, and having tried all the varied fixes to no avail, I really quite strongly feel that a person should not EVER be in the position or running some of the most powerful available hardware and STILL have to wait interminable seconds for Lightroom to respond.
This software, as it stands now on the PC platform (unless I am missing something quite obvous) is absolutely unusable in its present state.
Can someone from Adobe or a board guru please respond in kind to my request for help?

Partitioning ONE drive to contain system files, application, cache, catalog and photos=SLOW.
It really doesn't matter that the drive is 7200 or 10k rpm if ALL items reside on the same drive. The MacPro has four bays. One drive for system and catalog, second for cache, third for photos=FAST.
Wow, I'm glad you repeated that, and used capitalized text so that I would be sure to understand.
Clearly, the benchmarks I have off of the various evolutions of my last 3, $10k computers must be in error. (single system disk, RAID-0 system disk, 10k RPM system disk, RAID-0 3x -10K rpm system disks, multiple scratch volumes on different drives, singular scratch volumes on RAIDed drives, tested via benchmark programs and application specific batch tests, etc.etc.)
More importantly as an issue of forum protocol, you didn't actually read my post.

I'm throwing 370 mb/sec between two individual sets of 4 drive RAID-0 sets.  Single 7200rpm drives sling about 80 mb/sec.  My drive arrangement isn't the reason Lightroom IS TOO SLOW TO USE AS A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT.

  • I am having trouble with lightroom and photoshop being too slow.

Currently I am using LR 5.6 64bit andCS5 64 bit. Is the programs are running too slow because I am using 64 bit? If so, how do I get the other versions. I just started having this problem with the new upgrades.
Please if anyone knows what to do please answer right away. I have jobs that I need to get out.

Thank you both for replying. My processor is 3.2 Ghz. Ram 8gig 64 bit operating. Size of files are 29.6m
available Ram is set to 7170 range in MB i have set to 5019. I have the sync set to sync everything.
When I am importing into lightroom a new scan card, Raw, Canon D 5 Mark II raw. my Lightroom changes to DNG. It can take several minutes to edit. LR will spin quite a while when I try to look at a file in library or develop module after the files have been imported to lightroom. I have my preferences set to hold for 30 days so it should not take so long for files to refocus when I close lightroom and then reopen later. When I bring photo into photoshop, it sometimes it will not open if I have another file open in Photoshop. It takes 30 seconds for a file to open in photoshop from Lightroom. When I zoom in on a photo in LR it takes up to 30 seconds to focus.

  • Lightroom v1.0 is very slow

I got adobe Lightroom since yesterday and I find it very slow, if you select a photo and then you click 'develop' it takes hours and hours before you actually land in the 'develop' tab, if I want to make adjustments on my photo's Lightroom stops working and it will not react so I have close it and start it again. Has anyone experienced the same kind of trouble?
    Roger

LR is very slow on some Windows machines for (to me) unknown reasons. I run on two pretty slow Windows machines and LR 1.0 is quite fast for me. This includes running my single-core Pentium M laptop on battery power at 600MHz.
I have posted many times some tips for making LR 1.0 operate faster.

  • Lightroom 6 creats smart previews slower than lightroom 5 why?

Can anyone tell me if this is a bug or something else... i couldn't beleive when I import my first gallery !!!  IT WAS TOO SLOW (the smart previews import)!
I try the same gallery with Lightroom 5 and brought the smart previews in seconds !!

Thanks , I will follow the tread that you have mentioned.
I read it just now and it is a deception. not sure that was a good idea for me to upgrade LR 5.7.1 to 6 "beta" as quick...
hopping new updates will increase and optimize the CPU utilization

  • Lightroom 2 on pc is slow on you pc?

    Hi
I use lightroom 1.4.1 and it's amazing fast!
I tried lightroom 2 and it slow to me
I mean the sliders in the develop module are sticky , slow , not reactive
lightroom 1.4.1 again is perfect on my pc
I tried LT 2 on several pc powerful with xp or vista it's the same
Well who has the same problem?
    thanks
    have a nice day
    mantra

Another disappointed Lightroom 2 user here. I really wanted to use this product but I've experienced frustratingly SLOW performance on both of my 2GB Windows XP machines(both these machines run CS3 Photoshop and other high-demand apps just fine).
LR version 2 is so SLOW it is essentially unusable. It's way FASTER TO USE PHOTOSHOP, that should tell you something- I thought Lightroom was supposed to allow us "more time behind the lens and less time in front of the computer"??? Performance is everything in a application of this type!
Sliders are all very unresponsive, it literally takes 8-10 seconds to make a simple adjustment. The local adjustment brush is laughably, pathetically slow. It's so slow that you think what you just painted was too subtle to notice- so you go to adjust your brush settings, that's when the program finally catches up and paints your adjustment in a big wayward streak from the image towards where your cursor is now.
It seems everything I do incurs a wait penalty. Switching from Library to Develop modes, hiding/revealing a adjustment panel, etc. Graduated filter, to slow to use. Forget about using the dual monitor support. This release is across-the-board slower than LR1.4. I find it a bit of a slap that "increased performance" over version 1.4 was touted as a reason to upgrade to version 2. ha!
I hope there's a fix coming soon, there's some great features in LR2 I'd like to be using... For now- anyone thinking of buying version 2, take heed!

  • Lightroom plays music in slideshow slow.

I am trying to create a slideshow then when I tried to put music and hit the play button the music is distorted in slow tempo.  I tried exporting it and I still got the same result.
How can I fix this problem?
I am using lightroom 4 in MAC OS X version 10.6.8

I am now having a distortion issue.  Create a slideshow, import a tune from my iTunes library, set the show to synchronize with the song, and all works fine -- except the audio is raspy and distorted.  I've tried several audio tracks with the same result.
    Help please!

  • Why is Lightroom 5.7.1 so slow in develop module?

Lightroom CC slows right down and becomes unbearably slow when in develop module and working with brushes, or zooming/panning.
My computer is not the problem...running 32GB RAM and dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M graphics cards...

Lots of adjustment brushes and lots of spot removal can bog things down. Your best bet is to move those takes to the end of your develop cycle.

  • Lightroom CC is far too slow. What to do other than go back to LR 5

I've read quite a bit on the net and in these forums. Having un-ticked the CPU acceleration, I still think LR CC is slow and gluggy. Anyone have any suggestions to speed it up?
I will go back to LR5 until it's better
    Thanks

I see no point in keeping any backup older than a month.
If my "working" catalog went bust in Jan 2013, would I want to open a backup of - say - May 2012? What would that help me?
BTW: The catalog backups done via Lr are not incremental, each backup contains the full catalog, not only recent changes.
Reminder: you don't have to fall back to the older catalog for *all* things/photos. You can judiciously import from older catalog if need be.
Put another way: backups are full, but restoral can be "selective".
Also, don't forget the role of xmp for augmenting a catalog backup - one can get some stuff from an old backup, then overlay recent xmp to restore recent edits. Not only that, but it's also possible to selectively restore some things from xmp, whilst leaving other things - granted it takes a text editor (if sidecar) or exiftool (if embedded) and some know-how.
No question: you burn less bridges by keeping old catalog backups too, regardless of who you are or what you like. How important that is to you (or whether it's important at all) is a personal thing.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Does Lightroom 6 correct the super slow cropping issues that a Retina iMac has with LR5?

I've had huge timing issues with Lightroom 5 on a brand new, loaded, Retina iMac.  These are the worse when cropping and straightening.   Photos are RAW from Canon 5DmarkIII and Canon 7D.

    Hi,
Have a look in the system.log file for a IOkit timeout.
I had a problem with my Imac from purchase, it turned out to be a problem with the firewire port.
If there is a IOkit Timeout during boot-up, check to see if your system profile can seethe firewire port okay(no warnings).
If there is a problem with firewire, you can disabling it by moving all the IOFire*.kext file out of the
    system/library/extentions folder.
    Hope this helps,
    Steve

  • Why is Lightroom 5 Crop tool so slow?

Having this problem all the time. Sluggish crop tool making it impossible to make fine adjustments. Sole solution is to NOT use the 2nd monitor view. It seems this is causing the problem.
Except I WANT to use the 2nd monitor-option as a part of my workflow.
Using a Macbook Pro Retina 2,3 i7 with 8gb Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB and OSX 10.9 latest version. Surely this config is strong enough?
Secondary monitor is a Lacie324 hooked to the MBP through Apple-HDMI cable.
Help wanted! This is driving me crazy.

    Hi John,
Sorry but no. Still having the problem. Just installed CUDA driver for Mac. Hope this will help. Don't know if LR really takes advantage of this driver though.
Read somewhere to uncheck the "dynamic switching between Graphics Cards" - box in "Systemprefs>energy saving options". But still haven't seen improvements in performance.
Had no response to the issue by anybody else so it's difficult to come up with a solution.

  • Lightroom 3 super slow on new Windows 7 64 bit...Why?

I've recently switched over to  Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, running 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1GB ATI Radeon 4800  series video card, 1920px monitor and have found the performance in  Lightroom 3.4.1 much slower than I did on Windows XP, 32 bit running 2GB  of RAM with a 128MB motherboard card (laptop to boot).
Why  is this happening? The main issues are extremely slow imports (minimal  previews set as default when importing), very delayed thumbnail  (preview) rendering (the grid view sometimes sits with half the  thumbnails rendered, and half not rendered, then all of a sudden, a  minute or two later, all will be rendered...), and slow, in-consistent  1:1 rendering. I've tried all the different combos when it comes to  preview rendering but nothing does the trick. I've even tried switching  my 10GB LR3 (ACR?) cache to different drives but nothing does the trick.
Could  this be an issue with the Catalyst Control Center (software controling  my video driver)? It's all I've got left to consider but would very much  like a resolution.
    Thanks in advance.

Try the performance optimization tips here first:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400808.html
Optimize your catalog(s), render 1:1 previews on import, and make sure your Cache folder isn't near the setting in LR preferences. If necessary, increase your Cache size and see if that helps.
If you regularly use Standby Mode to turn off your system, try shutting down Windows AND REMOVE AC POWER. If you have other connected devices (storage, camera, game, etc.) that use a separate power supply, disconnect them from AC power as well. Wait at least 10 seconds, then restore AC power to all devices, and reboot your system. This called a "cold boot," which will insure restoring ALL hardware devices, operating system, background applications and drivers to a known good state.
When I'm done for the day my OS is "Shut Down" and the main AC power strip turned off. It is the ultimate surge protection – NO CONNECTION. When I reboot the next morning I know all my system memory and other resources are freed up and available for my designated usage.
Following these guidelines I have absolutely no issues running LR 3.4.1 on my Windows 7 64 bit system.
