Lightroom 2 - Auto white balance - crash

I'm having intermittent problems while applying auto white balance on some CR2 files in Lightroom 2 running on OS X 10.5.4. When choosing Auto from the list of white balance options, LR waits for a second or two, doesn't update the history panel and the spinning beachball appears. CPU rises to about 100% and there's no other way than to force quit.
So far it happens with, say, one in 50 images (I've been working on approximately 100 images and with 2 this happened).
When I restart I can easily recreate the problem by going through the same routine.
The workaround is working on another image and then going back to the problematic one; then I can apply AWB without any problems.
I can save a (lengthy) hang reporter log file.

Thought I was doing pretty good with LR2, but unfortunately this problem has showed up on my Mac OS X 10.5.4 system. The stalls (i.e., beachball) are when developing CR2 images from a Canon 5D. I experience many occurrences of the problem when going through this folder of RAWs, perhaps 20-30% of the images. Today I thought I had found one that always fails, but turns out not to be the case, although it causes a failure over half the time it is accessed. Same symptoms as described in the above posts: Convert an image's white balance to auto, in either quick-develop or develop. Then when you access the image you get the spinning beachball forever, and have to force-quit. I've also stalled LR with this sequence: in QD, convert WB to auto, switch to develop module, undo the WB change in history by clicking the prior step... LR stalls. Basically I've seen all the same steps as described here, and more.
Also, just for fun I tried everyone's favorite troubleshooting step, i.e., trashing preferences. It made absolutely no difference. The first time I simply clicked on the troublesome image, LR got stuck.
Jao... interestingly, I never saw this problem in the beta in spite of developing many, many images in the beta. If it was known and not fixed, that's quite a concern.

  • Lightroom: Why does auto white balance no longer work after changing the camera calibration profile?

    I'm using NEF raw files from Nikon.
    Lets say for example I import a NEF file into Lightroom (v4) and click on 'auto' for white balance. The white balance in the image is  adjusted correctly (somewhat). However, if I then change the camera profile (in the camera calibration section) from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard' then the white balance in the image becomes very wrong. I then have to set the white balance back to 'as shot' and correct it manually instead.
    Why would 'auto white balance' no longer work just because I change the profile from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard'?
    Any ideas?

  • Colour cast using auto White Balance in ACR 7.4

    I am experiencing a yellowish colour cast when I set the White Balance to Auto in Adobe Camera Raw. This happens with pictures taken with the Nikon D7100 and also the Nikon D50.

    Oh, Auto WB is reliable for what it was designed to do...take the image colors into consideration when determining the auto white balance. It's doing exactly what it's supposted to do...the fact that it's often not what you want shouldn't be a surprise.   • D3 + "Auto" White Balance in LR2 = +30 Magenta

    I have been finding some problems with the "Auto" white balance setting in LR2...
    Since I started shooting RAW with my D3 (while still shooting with my D70 in the same locations) LR2 likes to give me a +30 Magenta whenever I choose Auto no matter where or what I'm shooting.
    I don't suffer the same adjustment shooting RAW on the D70 (interchanging the same lenses.)
    Anybody else seeing this issue? I'm shooting Auto WB on the D3 almost all the time and I end up having to manually perform any WB tweaks in LR otherwise everything is too "pink."

    While generally agreeing that a gray-card white-balance measurement is more accurate and eyedropping something that glows in UV light is a problem, in this particular case, if the dress does indeed look white to the eye, and the people that will be viewing and purchasing the pictures expect it to be white, then white-balancing on the dress can be ok.
    In this particular instance the issue seems to be that there is mixed lighting between the sky and the trees so the particular part of the dress being eyedropped changes things, and the angle of the gray-card would make a difference, so the multiple angles of fabric in the dress may offer a wider range of "targets" where one is more accurate than the gray-card.
    I wish LR would allow the Auto WB to be restricted to the cropped area of a photo, so you could crop it down to just the gray-card or in this case the front of the dress and have it guess more correctly.
    The maximum area that can be sampled by the WB-dropper is too small and the area sampled for the Auto WB is too large for LR to be the most helpful in certain situations.
    Being able to eyedropper a non-neutral area, such as the skin and compute the color-balance as compared to a library of skin tones, would also be very helpful.
    Elements lets you color-balance a photo based on skin tones, and you can do this thing by hand in Photoshop Levels/Curves by referring to RGB values, but I wish LR would be helpful in this regard, as well.
    I realize this is what the DNG Profile Converter and Colormunki are letting you do, but having to create a permanent profile and install it and use it are not the same as being able to create an image-specific profile and use it in place of WB across several images.
    Why shouldn't I be able to have someone hold up a color-checker and have LR compute an image-specific color-balance based on that.
    The other thing LR should allow is have an eyedropper help with determining the highlight and shadow tint hue/sat values.

  • Turn off auto white balance on USB camera

    Hi,
    I'm using a USB camera to capture images of bright colored lights. I have the light configured and working in MAX and Labview 2009. My problem is that the camera is set to auto white balance in MAX and Labview, and I can't seem to change this to no white balance. When the bright lights are imaged the white wall behind the light turns the complimentary color to the light as the software attempts to 'white balance' the entire image. There doesn't seem to be an option in Labview or MAX to turn this white balance to anything other than 'auto.' I've attached the program and a couple screen shots to show the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    This might be late, but for the sake of reference I will answer anyway.
    You should use 2 property nodes.
    To the porpery: "CameraAttributes->ActiveAttribute"
    you should wire the string: "CameraAttributes::WhiteBalance::Mode", and to the property "ValueDBL" you should wire 1 (for manual).
    Then repeat this on a second property node but change "mode" to "value" and wire the desired value to "ValueDBL."

  • Pentax K-3 multi auto white balance

    Raw images from the Pentax K-3 with the setting "multi auto white balance" activated have a green color cast when processed in Adobe camera raw (left), Pentax's own Silkypix converter get's the images right (on the right).
    Any chance that in the future multi auto white balance will be supported?

  • D2X auto white balance handling?

    How does Aperture get on with NEFs shot with auto white balance on a D2X? It was a problem in CS2.
    And...when I saw the demo at the Nikon show in London, they were running it on a Quad. I loved the ability to zoom in on the thumbnails, but how fast is that on something lowlier than a Quad, like a dual 2.5?
    (Thinks: can I go on finding enough queries to hold myself back until the first update?)

    I generally shoot in auto white balance and I have not noticed any problems with my D2X images. I actually expected some issues based on all the bashing over the encrypted NEFs with the newer Nikons.
    With now just shy of 10,000 images in my library, Aperture runs very nice on my Dual 2.5.

  • Unsatisfactory E71 auto white balance, blue/purple...

    The E71's camera doesn't really shine with regard to automatic white balance. There's almost always some blue to purple tint. It seems to depend whether the "flash" was used and whether the camera is used in day or "night" mode. The other (non-auto) white balance modes usually don't match the actual lighting conditions too. Is it a deficient white-balance algorithm or is this tint just from the heavy noise in non-night mode? Is there any workaround (on the phone, not postprocessing on a PC) or fix, maybe it is improved in 200.x firmware? - Kolja

    Start camera as normal
    before capturing any picture,  set white balance to day light and press Ok
    After that set it back to automatic
    Purple tint is gone
    You must do it after capturing
    Nokia's guys please fix it

  • Lightroom seems to auto white balance on RAW files

    Hi, I started using Canon RAW files and noted that in Lightroom, it will render a preview and change the original photo colour etc. Is this normal and how to I switch this auto rendering off?
    For JPG, it doesn't seems to do that...

    When you import, one of the options is "Develop Settings" (the Import Photos dialogue box, below the list of pictures it's going to import, in an area labelled "Information to Apply"). Unless you have something other than "None", then I don't think it alters the WB, though I could be wrong. Of course, if you apply a Develop Setting then all bets are off - the preset could do anything.
    As for Auto Tone, go to Edit menu, Preferences, Presets tab, and check (or not, as you prefer) the Apply auto tone adjustments option. But that shouldn't alter white balance or colour.

  • Lightroom D100 custom white balance not read

    I have a D100 converted to IR use. I shoot with a custom white balance set off green grass. If I open an image in Raw Shooter or Capture I get the balance I expect. In Lightroom it opens as what looks like an unbalanced "pink" IR shot. Manually adjusting the white balance in LR I can't get my normal results - may be related to the fact that the red channel looks completely clipped at the high end which I don't see in RSP.
    The D100 is meant to be supported for reading white balances.
    Any suggestions ?

    Suggestion for a workaround:
    It seems that you want to work with a specific WB value you know.
    Just create a preset with a fixed WB value which you apply by importing your IR shots. Then you don't even have to set it in the camera.
    Besides this with my D70 I get the WB valance values from the camera without probs. I have however no experience with the D100

  • Lightroom & Nikon D800e White Balance

    I've set my white balance in the camera (D800e) to afixed temperature; 5500K.
    When I bring the .NEF file into Lightroom 4.1, the "As Shot" white balance is called out as 5300K, with a +6 Tint.
    I get this same reading with any of the six camera profiles listed in the LR Camera Callibration frame.
    If LR is reading the metadata in the .NEF file, the numbers ought to match.
    Why don't they?

    So on import you want all your photos so have a 5500K 0 WB in LR like you did with your old camera?  Then all you have to do is set LR to have that as it’s default WB, or create a Develop preset with WB 5500K0 and use that as your import preset.  The only reason it matters what your camera is set to is that you are using the LR factory default of As Shot so LR interprets the camera’s gray-point values into a WB.  The only thing that is affected by your camera’s setting is the WB of the embedded JPG preview that the camera shows as you review your photos, or that you see when you import photos before LR re-renders things. 
    If seeing this spectrum of colors on your camera’s display and on the Import grid is important, then so you need your camera’s custom WB to show up in LR as 5500K +0 then take a sequence of shots where you vary the WB slightly  in your camera maybe by 50K on each one, and keeping track of what you set it to for each one, and find the one that LR interprets most closely as 5500K +0.
    I used to do what I think you’re saying you do, have my camera set to the same custom WB for everything and have the tungsten shots look very orange and my twilight shots look very blue and other outdoor shots vary between orange and blue, and then adjust my WB in LR to how I wanted it.  Since I always was needing to adjust my WB in LR, I decided to get a little help from my camera, and now I have it set to AWB so I have the added benefit of the camera’s intelligence in guessing what looks good.  I still synchronize my various photos in a particular lighting scenario to the same WB after deciding what looks best, but sometimes I find the camera does a better job of guessing than I did and I sync to a custom-WB that is equivalent to what it picked for its AWB of one of the shots instead of always having to play with the WB to figure out what I want.  Having my camera set to AWB doesn’t preclude me from having the same WB for all my photos in LR and seeing which ones are warmer or cooler than others, but not having my camera set to AWB removes the camera’s intelligence as a suggested WB.

  • Lightroom 4 and white balance tool

    In Lightroom 4 i use the whtie balance tool and find point that give as high as 99% reading and it would work to set it as the reference point. Today i did the same thing and got a message that said Lightroom could not obtain white balance from that spot and to try again. i've never seen this before. even if i used  a spot that was 100% reflective. It would just render colors off.
    Today i did the same thing and a message came on the screen that Lightroom couldn't obtain white balance from that spot and i should try again. i was only able to obtain white balance if i used a spot that reflected no more than approx. 90%.

    The White Balance Picker sample area  in LR4  can now be adjusted using the 'Scale' slider, so yes it has changed from LR3:

    The readings you see in the LR Histogram in no way reflect the actual raw data values. The White Balance picker needs a sample area that has no raw data clipping in any channel (i.e.All four R,G, B, G2 channels 99% or less). I suspect the 99% area you are sampling has raw data clipping in one or more channels. If interested you can download RawDigger to examine the image file to confirm:

    I suggest choosing a sample area that is well below 99%, such as 85% to 95%.

  • Color correcting auto white balance footage

    I shot some video yesterday and at the time of the shoot, I made sure to set my white balance, however after looking at the footage I notice the color temperature slightly shifts constantly. I don't know why this happened, but it's too late to investigate, my project is due in less than a week.
    The good news is that I've realized that that there's a white object in the bg of the shot the entire time that is pure white so i could color correct by setting that as the white point in FCP. The only problem is that since it shifts every 3 seconds or so i would have to keyframe a LOT. Is there any plug-in or application that will let me track that white object in the background so it can set a custom white points for every frame?
    Running Final Cut Pro 6.0.2
    PS: I found Avid has auto color correction -- basically what I'm looking for I guess. Unfortunately I don't have Avid.

    there's no auto color correction feature directly in FCP
    there are 3rd party plugs to allow you to track objects but i'm not aware of any way to link that to a color correction

  • Lightroom Changes RAW White Balance Upon Import?

    Hi All,
    I'm new to Lightroom so bear with me. My problem lies in the import process: each time I import, a yellow tint (tungsten WB) is added to each photo, as if the white balance is being changed. I know that thumbnails are created in camera, but the photos look fine when Lightroom is "loading" them on the library screen, it is only when the "loading" message goes away that they look too yellow. I don't want to apply an import preset because I fear that each photo's problem is unique. When I use quicklook in finder, the images look fine. When I export as a jpeg from LR, the problem persists. Here's what I'm using:
    Camera: Canon T2i (Color Space: sRGB)
    Lightroom: Version 4.0
    Computer: Macbook Pro, Snow Leopard
    I've read that this could be caused by a corrupt color profile, but I'm not sure how to change this on a Mac and if it's appropriate to apply sRGB as a monitor profile.
    Any help is appreciated!!

    The initial preview is the camera generated JPEG (should match the LCD). Then LR builds it’s own high quality previews based on it’s engine. Hence the difference. Ignore the original OR if you really like it, try making a preset for importing the images that honor that rendering. Bottom line, the initial previews are not any reality to what LR is going to initially produce based on all those sliders.
