Lightroom 2 develop sliders

Hi
i bought lightroom 1.4.1 and now i'm using photoshop cs4
well lightroom 1.4.1 , i mean the develop sliders are very smooth
and the cs4 (or cs3) acr is amazing blazing fast , again the sliders
i tried lightroom 2 last version on different pc , very powerful and normal pc
i updated every drivers , but the lightroom 2 sliders are not very smooth , are sticky
i tried to delete every preference
now my question
is a problem related only to me , i'm running it under windows xp sp2 and windows xp sp3
or is a general issues
thanks

Hi Victoria,
I have read several of the nVidia tweak notes but they never seem to have the same terminology as the setting that show up when I bring up my nVidia control panel.  Here are the global defaults on my system - can you guide me as to which ones I should focus on changing?  I have tried many combinations and can't see any significant difference but unsure which ones are really important.  I have also customized these combinations such that they are limited to when Lightroom is running but unsure if that feature works or not.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  • Develop sliders respond really slow

Upgraded to LR 4.2 + Update, and the sliders still works very slow.
    I have a machine with 8GB + i7 370K + Nvidia 560 Ti + Dell U2711 (27" monitor).
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
My system is running with 8GB of memory and a core i5 CPU.
Lightroom is installed on an SSD drive and the catalog file is located on the same SSD drive as well.
The SSD drive has a lot of space free (at least 10 GB).
    I'm using a Dell U2711 monitor (native resolution 2560x1440).
The most interesting thing is that if I adjust lightroom window size, then the development sliders work very fast.
LR is a non-destructive editor that never writes or changes the original file. PS is a destructive pixel editor that also caches multiple copies of the edited file in memory to speedup "undo" image building. PS4-6 supports Open GL, which uses the graphics processor for processing certain image views (Rotate, 3D, etc.). LR and PS work entirely differently concerning onscreen image building, and LR benefits very little by increasing graphics card performance.
A faster system processor will make LR more responsive with a high resolution display, but simply keeping the Loupe image smaller when adjusting sliders in the Develop module will do the same thing. My system is only slightly higher performance (i7-280, 12GB) and I have no issues. BUT my monitor is 1920 x 1080 (~2Mp) versus 2560 x 1440 (~3.7Mp). Your processor needs to build almost twice (2x) the number of pixels every time you make a change in the Develop module. If my i7 system performance is about 1.5x your i5 system, then screen response time will be almost three times faster ( .3 to .5 Sec. versus 1.0 to 1.5 Sec.).Using dual high resolution displays is even more challenging for LR.
Try making the Develop module side panels as large as possible by dragging the border with your mouse, and perhaps increase the height of the filmstrip. Then use CTRL + SHIFT + F Key to enter and exit full screen mode for a larger image review of your Develop setting changes. On my system this takes about 1.0 sec., so this may not be a time saving option for you (i.e. ~3.0 sec.). Give it a try.

I have installed Adobe Lightroom CC.  In the process of launching, a popup appears, that says:  "AN INTERNAL ERROR HAS OCCURRED.  Cannot create the required folder:  /Users/(my user name)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Develop Presets."  So even though Lightroom CC is installed, it will not launch.  What do I need to do to allow it to launch?

The problem was solved today.  Here's the full story.  I'm a Mac user.  At first I installed Lightroom CC on my iMac (desktop).  I had this problem so I called Adobe, and was referred to a "special unit" .  After about an hour the tech solved it for me ... we did a screen sharing and she took control of my computer for a loooong time.  Because of language difficulties, at first I wondered if she knew what she was doing but she eventually solved it.  Although she couldn't explain exactly what she was doing, she summarized it by saying "it was a permissions problem."  I asked if I would have the same issue later when I installed it on my laptop (Macbook Air).  She said probably not.
But I did.  The same internal error popup arose on launch and launch did not complete on my laptop.  I tried chat but no joy so I eventually called Apple Care.  I had noticed that on my laptop (and the iMac for that matter), that there was no Library folder after my user name.  The Apple tech explained that the Library folder is actually there but it is hidden because it's very easy for users to do some very nasty things to their computer by going astray while in the Library folder.  The folder is actually there, but they hide it.  I did remember seeing that the tech helping me with my iMac had typed the work "Library" while she was controlling my computer.  Basically she had activated the hidden Library folder so she could open the path that Lightroom was trying to follow to create that "Develop Presets" folder.  For some reason, the inability to create that folder in the launch process was preventing launch from being completed.  The Apple tech said she didn't actually have to do that and activated the Library folder by use of the Go selection on the menu bar.  Anyway, once that complete path was replicated and opened, the next step was to go to the Lightroom Permissions field and add my user name to the user categories already there and enable "read and write" permissions to my user name.  Once done, I shut down my laptop, and then rebooted.  I launched Lightroom and then boom, voila, heavens to betsy, etc. it launched and suddenly a dismal weekend turned into a great one.
I am not a geek, so I hope this makes some sense.  I also hope Lightroom launches again tomorrow and beyond!

Hmm, not sure I completely understand now. What exactly simultaneously should mean in this context? The thing is that it seems there's no chance in getting the connection to work when I first turn on the client on my Windows computer. The other way (starting on my Linux computer) it works just fine, and I am able to connect from my Windows to my Linux anytime.
Also I'm not sure that this is the problem, cause it seems that same problem apply to connection to other computers as well (however this impression is based on a testing with just a very few tries, so I'll try to test it more soon).
    Thanks for the explaining anyway!

  • Lightroom 3 sliders lose color shading after upgrade to Mavericks...any help?

Just recently upgraded to Mavericks OS on Mac, but now finding that the coloring of the sliders (for example in the Hue, Saturation, Luminance module) is gone.  This is really annoying as I cannot see what the color will look like unless I actually move the sliders.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • All Develop sliders visible at one time across two monitors or wide monitors

Is there any way to have all the Develop models visible at one time instead of having to scroll downwards ?
I have a 21:9 screen with lots of horizontal space, so I would like to have the Develop sliders fill the space horizontally instead of vertically. Or if Develop panel can be fully visible on a second or third monitor.

As far as I know there is no way you can do that.

  • Is there a Lightroom developer mailing list?

Google searches are coming up fairly empty, but is there a Lightroom developer mailing list?

I think you're looking at it. You can set this forum up to email you if you prefer. :-)
I have thought it would be nice to have a site where people could share code, dev tips, techniques, etc. I'd be willing to take the initiative on that but I'm not sure how much interest there is. There aren't a ton of LR developers yet and it's possible to post small chunks of code here already. But if people think a larger scale thing would contribute to larger scale amounts of shared code, I might reconsider.

  • Keyboard shortcuts to select develop sliders

For those people who like to minimize their mouse kilometers, it would be useful to have keyboard shortcuts to *select* individual sliders in the develop module. [See also the specific request for an exposure shortcut that recently came up in this thread:
shawnmoore, "What is the Lightroom keyboard shortcut for Exposure?" #, 27 Aug 2007 9:10 pm ]
Keyboard shortcuts for individual sliders would be particularly convenient for people using programmable controllers (i.e. the Contour Design Shuttle). You could assign the shortcut to a programmable key (on button for 'exposure', for example) and then use the shuttle/scroll wheel to adjust the corresponding value.
Now, I realize that Lightroom is quickly running out of available shortcut keys, so I suggest to couple them to the active panel. Currently, ctrl+[number] (on Windows) selects the n-th panel on the panel set on the right hand side, i.e. ctrl+1 -> basic, ctrl+2 -> tone curve. My proposal would be to use ctrl+F[number] to select the n-th slider (or other control) *within* that panel. Then, the up/down arrows could be used to adjust the values.
    Any opinions?

Question 1. I already asked this, Can I removed the Apple default apps?
No. But you can turn off automatic syncing and Push email and set the phone to retrieve mail manually.
Question 2. Can I control the way apps access the data network?
Sort of. Turn on Airplane mode which will disable the cellular modem then turn on WiFi only. With Airplane mode ON and WiFi ON, your phone will only connect to the internet using an available WiFi connection.
I can't find a way to prevent apps from using it or switching to it when my WI-FI drops momentarily.
Apps do not run in the background so they only way an app can attempt to connect is if you have it running. If you do not run the app, it cannot run up your bill. For Apps that have "background" notification, you can turn that option off in the settings for each of those apps.
Question 3. Is it possible for the mobile provider to turn my data network off while leaving the cellular network active?
That is up to your provider. Call them. Go into Settings, General, Network, and turn OFF Data Roaming.
Question 4. I'm trapped in a tough spot, is there something "technical" I can do, that I haven't mentioned bellow? There must be something to elevate the situation.
In the US, you can return the phone within thirty days and void the contract. If you do not have that option, or if you are past thirty days, you can pay the ETF (Early Termination Fee) and void the contract.
I live in a very rural area in the US and I have used all of the techniques listed above at different times. I hope this helps; I "get it" that a huge Surprise! data roaming bill at the end of the month can be upsetting. Try the stuff I listed above and if none of that works, paying the ETF might be cheaper than paying Surprise! bills every month.
    Hope this was helpful.

  • I'm looking at older photos but the sliders are from Lightroom 4 and not my current Lightroom 5 sliders.  How do I get the photos to work on Lightroom 5 editing?

I was looking at some old photos from 2012 but when I clicked the files (.dng) instead of opening with the sliders for LR5, it opened sliders for I believe LR4.  How do I get those older photos to open under LR5 sliders and not older versions of LR?

    tma654 wrote:
Sorry, not so good great at LR.  Do you have pics or something visual to show how this is done?...Do i have to switch each photo's process version or is there a way to do a whole batch of them?
The quickest way to update just one photo is to click the lightning bolt icon under the histogram in the Develop module. This can be more convenient than scrolling all the way down to the Calibration tab.
A quick way to update a whole batch of them is to select any number of them in Grid view, and then choose Photo > Develop Settings > Convert to Current Process. The AutoSync way works too, as long as you remember to turn it off immediately after you're done.
Like JimHess suggests, I don't automatically convert them all at once, but on a case by case basis because they don't always look better after conversion. The benefits of the new process version can potentially make them look better, but you usually have to do a few more adjustments to get them there. If you don't have time to do that yet but you need to use the existing images soon, leave them in the old process version for now.

  • Matching Lightroom Develop Settings to In-Camera Picture Styles

For certain shoots it would suit me to have my pictures import and look like the embedded jpegs which are created using Canon's standard picture styes. Is there an easy way to create LR develop settings to match the popular Canon styles such as Standard, Portrait and Landscape so that I get approx the same amount of sharpness, contrast, colour balance. Perhaps someone has already done that and they've shared the Lightroom Presets.

    Rob Cole wrote:
Are you 100% sure the luminance noise reduction algorithm is tailored to each specific camera model, in Lightroom (and ACR)  I mean?
What I stated  is based on "visual" observations of raw files from three different Canon DSLR cameras inside LR and DPP. I am sure it varies from camera manufacturer and even camera model, with some models applying NR during demosaicing and others not. The Fuji X-Tran is a good example where Adobe initially had issues with the demosacing process, which affected image sharpness and noise levels. My guess is that this is done in two-steps:
    1) Initial demosaicing on Import into the Develop module where the 4-pixel cell  RG1BG2 raw data is converted into a "uniform" single pixel bit map with RGB values. This is the best possible place to analyze the image data for Color NR and demosaic interpolation to maximize sharpness and minimize "aliasing." How "well" this is done has a huge impact on the overall sharpness of the image. Hot pixel removal is done during demosaic processing for all camera models. Hot pixels can't be removed from JPEG and sRAW image files since they are already demosaic'd.
    2) Additional Color and Luminance NR and Capture Sharpening is performed inside the Develop module using the camera raw cache data. The Luminance NR "tailoring" I refer to is probably based on "reverse engineering" of the manufacturer's raw converter algorithms. The higher the ISO the larger the NR amount applied at any given setting. In order to provide somewhat "uniform" values it would have to be based on the ISO versus Noise performance of the specific camera model.  For example a 12Mp 1.6 crop sensor camera is not going to perform near as well as a 12 Mp full-frame camera of the same generation.
Attached below is my best effort in LR and DPP using a Canon 5D MKII 21Mp raw image shot with a 24mm TS-E II lens–The sharpest lens I've ever owned. It's pretty clear (pun) DPP pulls out more detail, but falls down in the tonal definition (i.e. shadow detail). The only thing this can be due to are differences in Canon's DPP demosaicing and LRs.

    DPP Sharpening = 3 out of 10, LR Sharpening = 40, .8, 40, 0

  • Lightroom develop, Photoshop Raw and Smart objects

I understand that Lightroom's Develop function and Photoshop Raw adjustments are the same.  So I adjust in either or.  I can then open the photo as a smart object in photoshop. I can then make further adjustments as an adjustment layer. Which I think is the same as both Lightroom's Develop function and Photoshop Raw adjustments?  I understand smart objects allows non destructive editing and smart filters.
SO my questions are: When would you not open the photo as a smart object? Surely I should always open the photo as a smart object?  If I want to do any editing not allowed to smart objects such as clone stamp I can then create a layer and then apply the clone stamp to the layer, can't I?
Secondly, should I also convert all layers to smart layers or leave them as a normal layer.
Or thirdly, am I way off track?

If I want to do any editing not allowed to smart objects such as clone stamp I can then create a layer and then apply the clone stamp to the layer, can't I?
And that is where the underlying Smart Object starts losing (some of) its usefulness.
Because all those edits will be unaffected if you should choose to change the development settings of the embedded RAW.
Secondly, should I also convert all layers to smart layers or leave them as a normal layer.
    What for?
Unless you want to non-destructively apply transformations or Filters or need several instances of something in one file it would mainly cause a drag on performance. (Edit: or bloat the files’s size)
But in those cases Smart Objects offer significant advantages.
