Lightroom 2 Trial breaks iPhoto

I have been silly.
Whilst trying Lightroom 2 recently I imported my full Pictures folder into the application and allowed the application to move the images. This has destroyed my iPhoto 'database'.
Where once I had 3.5k images arranged in a few hundred events, I now have 9.5k images in one folder. When opening iPhoto it can obviously not find a single thing or show a single event. All of my hard work organising my library over the years has evaporated.
I have got nearly 10k images now because Lightroom 2.0 imported the original file and any modified files of the same images separately.
I don't think this can be fixed - and I know it is my own fault - but moving on...
I am now using Adobe Bridge CS3 to begin the task of organising my Pictures folder once again. It seems like the ideal piece of software to bring some order to this chaos. Once I have a new file structure in place I hope to slowly import back into iPhoto. However, I was going to import without copying images to the iPhoto Library so as to avoid duplication and because I would rather use a file structure in Finder to keep my images organised.
I think I only really need iPhoto to enable me to access my images for use in other iLife and iWork applications and to 'share' my images easily online and in print.
Is this a sensible way to go? I will consider any other option as I am really starting from the very beginning and can take any path.

Also, there seems to be a lot of duplication that worries me with 7.5GB spare on my 80GB hard drive.
First things first: OS X needs about 10 gigs of HD space for normal OS operations. You need as a first priority to make space on that HD. If you don't the OS will slow down, apps will crash and the *risk of data corruption is greatly increased.*
Therefore, should I import all 10k images into iPhoto at this stage and begin organising from there?
No, sort the wheat from the chaff first - get rid of the thumbnails and modified versions first. as this can be done by filesize, use the Finder or Bridge.
Can you explain the difference between referenced and un-referenced library please?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.
and the only other thing I do is to work on the very best images in Photoshop CS3.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
I just don't like the thought of all of my images being 'hidden' in the iPhoto Library and not in folders that I have control over.
Your images are not 'hidden'. The images are perfectly available in the iPhoto Window. The files are stored in the iPhoto Package File. Want to see inside? Right click on it and go 'Show package Contents'.
Also, you have control of the location of the files in the pkg file:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
I don't have a vested interest in which you decide between Bridge and iPhoto. Many times when I write answers I have one eye on folks who may read this thread in a week or a months time. But your first priority is to make space on that HD.

  • Lightroom and/or iPhoto with Apple TV (first 1st generation) integration/streaming

As a hobby Photographer I love using lightroom, Many times, I want to use apple tv to show the photos, or even just randomly browse them. Now the problem is, there isnt any (or I dont know about one, thats why im here ) easier or more automatic or integrated way to stream the library into the apple tv i have (first generation apple tv) than through iPhoto.
Now, I WANT to use lightroom for handling and editing photos (the editting options and organization/sorting of photos is just somewhere in different dimensions to iphoto)
But, I HAVE to use iPhoto for streaming to Apple TV.
Any Idea how I could do all this without manual import export between the LR and iPhoto?
I know lightroom can watch a folder and use automatic import but is that really the best way?
Thank you so much! Please let me know of any idea that pops into your head!
    Thanks!

Sorry but you'll need to go back and forth: out of Lightroom and into iPhoto. Setting up a workflow of flagging and using Smart albums can make this easier. But basically, those images need to get into iPhoto to work with Apple TV. Have you considered using Apple's Aperture? Aperture integrates nicely with Apple TV. That's what I use. However, be warned that Aperture is a resource hog and requires more of the higher end processes to work really well, especially if you have large photo libraries. You'll want 8GB of RAM and a newer graphics card (basically a newer Mac) and higher end CPU. The minimum requirements that Apple says Aperture needs are minimal at best.

Lightroom trial doesn't show complete menu selections or import button.  Also get error message on launch:  An error occurred when attempting to change modules.  I am unable to find/see the following file to try renaming the SLCache and SLStore files:  System Library/Application Support/Adobe.  Any ideas?  I only have 16 days left on the trial and have been unable to get it to work on my Macbook Pro.  This is all I am seeing after Lightroom opens.  Thanks!

Thanks to both of you for attempting to help.  I finally figured out what was wrong . . . it was a Permissions problem.  Very frustrating, but after scouring the troubleshooting tips I finally found the one that solved my problem.  I had to add a User and give it Read/Write privileges to Lightroom.  The file I had to add the User to was Hidden on my Mac, so that added an even bigger challenge to the mystery.  Only a few days left on my trial version!  I hope I have time to try it out!

Yes. The trial version is the full version of Lightroom, and it is fully functional for the 30 day trial period.

  • Lightroom trial version, windows

cannot install lightroom trial version on windows vista laptop,  the exe program does not run.

Lightroom does require 64-bit support.  Your processor does support this but you will want to see if your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.  If it is 32-bit then you will need to install a 64-bit version in order to utilize Adobe Lightroom.

If apps don't show up, your system may not meet the requirements. Check them:

  • Latest RAW photo format update breaks iPhoto?

    Hello,
I'm running the latest iPhoto (9.2.1) on Lion (10.7.2).   I bought iPhoto the other day so that I could enable Photo Stream from my iPhone.
After it installed via the App Store, Apple Update said there was a RAW file format update.  I didn't install it right away as I was importing the 6500+ files into iPhoto.
A majority of my files are in DNG format from when I imported the RAW files into Lightroom.  But iPhoto didn't seem to have any issues with this and imported happily.
Once the import was done, I could see all the thumbs of my photos without issue and the larger versions of the photos.
I installed the RAW file update, and now things are broken.  None of my thumbs show up.  iPhoto knows the files are there as it has a record of something being there, but no display.  When I double click on the thumb to see the full size, I get a  !  for the bigger picture.   Now here's the really odd thing... if I use the scroll wheel on my mouse and scroll super fast in the thumbs display, I can see thumbs scrolling by, i stop scrolling, they all disappear.  I've attached a screen shot of what it looks like.
I'm utterly confused on this and not sure how to proceed.  Is there a way to roll back the update?  Or should I blow away the library and reimport?
Any ideas would be greatly appricated
    Thanks

This has  nothing to do with the Raw update. (And, by the way, all these do is add support for new cameras. If you're not shooting with one of these specified cameras there's no need to update.)
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Lightroom trial will not install

Lightroom trial will not install , javascript error? Mac OSX10.8.5

Scrappy1 what do you mean exactly by doing a scan?
Under Windows 7 you will want to use the Programs and Features Control Panel to remove your installation.  I would recommend verifying that Photoshop Lightroom is removed from the list of installed applications.

    I dare say so.
However, LR5.2 is largely to fix bugs in LR5.0.  LR5.0 was released on 9th June, and a number of significant bugs (that affect quite a lot of users) were acknowledged by Adobe on 12th June.  I'd quite like to think that Adobe can fix those significant bugs with a full release (not another RC) within 3 months.

  • Trying Lightroom trial; two questions?

Sorry if these have been answered. I searched but maybe didn't use the right set of search words.
I just imported a directory with subdirectories, 3000 pics, into my Lightroom trial. Sometimes I use the finder to change file names or move them. Not the smartest thing when using Lightroom, I know, but I seem to fall into doing it fairly often. It worked out in Bridge because it was a browser.
Can the folders and files (if renamed) be refreshed if changes are made outside Lightroom?
I like to save a copy of my Master photo. Even though I think the changes in Lightroom are non-destructive, can I save a master copy and another edited copy? I had to make a copy of the photo before using Camera Raw from Bridge. Possible to revert, I know, but then I would lose my edits. Would you make a separate folder to keep Master Copies?
Summarizing: can folders/files be refreshed from within Lightroom?
Can I save a Master copy and use a second copy for developing?
Whoops, one more question. Can I have a preview pane showing in Lightroom like in Bridge? I'm looking, but haven't found one yet.
    Thanks in advance for advice!

Thanks Jeff. i was beginning to wonder if my questions were too basic to bother with ;-)
i did figure out how to use the compare feature as a preview.
Can you tell me how to refresh the folders and files from within lightroom, just in case I get the saving keywords problem figured out and can use the program at all.
I am having a major problem saving keywords to files as mentioned in another post. In fact am getting so frustrated I'm in the process of trying fusion so i can go back to ACDsee which was perfect for what I needed.
Very possibly lightroom and the like are more complicated than i need.
    I appreciate your response.

  • Cannot get Lightroom trial to start on Windows 8 [was:lightroom]

I cannot get lightroom trial to start. I am using windows 8

I think you're getting the wrong end of the stick.
Nothing to do with Lightroom not supporting your browser.
It's a download issue often resolved by using a different browser.
You could be downloading any software. This case just happens to be Lightroom. But it's not Lightroom's fault. It's the Adobe website.
Anyway, I've got to go. Best of luck.
