Lightroom 3.4.1 looses video thumbnails - Mac OS Lion

I remember this having been brought up sometime ago (and happily sank into oblivion), and certainly not specific to OSX Lion (had it all the way before), -
Lightroom is prone to loose video thumbnails in the Grid view at random, i.e some are preserved, and others are displayed all black, see screenshot attached. This happens after some time, apparently after some successive imports of fresh images/videos to the catalogue.
The only workaround is to remove the clips from catalogue, then reimport them - is hardly acceptable since you loose all keywords in the process.
Will anyone at Adobe finally take heed of this issue? Not a dealbreaker, but certainly bothersome.
Users of Lightroom who suffer from the same issue, please add to this thread to make it more credible.
LR 3.4.1 on Mac OS Lion.
Thanks.

perhaps somebody found a way to fix the thumbnails without removing videos from the catalogue? Please share!

  • How should I best import HD Videos from the new iPad to my mac without loosing video quality?

The new HD video on the new iPad is awesome, but it can eat up a lot of memory in no time. I would like to know what is the most recommended way to export my ipad movies to iLife on my mac without loosing image quality, so i can free up space on my iPad.
If I use iPhoto I notice that the file size of the video from the new iPad is a lot smaller then if I use iMovie to import the same video.
Example: I import a 53 second video from the new iPad to iPhoto and the imported file has a file size of 143 MB in iPhoto. (iphoto save the video as IMG_0048.mov)
I import the same video to iMovie manually and the imported file size is 843 MB in iMovie. BIG DIFFERENCE. (iMovie saves that same video as clip-2012-03-20 16;13;08.mov)
Now to really be confusing: I go to Image Capture program and locate the file manually on my iPad and is has the same name and file size is what is in iPhoto.
So either iMovie is making the File a lot larger when it imports to an event, or the file I'm looking at is actually the iPhoto version that I get because I sync with iPhoto.
The second issue that I have is that now I have 2 videos on my hard drive: one in iPhoto, and one in iMovie for a combined data storage of close to 1 GB.
I would like to be able to import ALL my iPad recording into iPhoto and then delete the video from the device when done.
But if I loose video quality, I'm not happy about that. Secondly, by importing video from my iPad into multiple iLife programs, I'm creating duplicates with sometimes different quality. Any suggestions? is there a setting in iPhoto that can do all this for me?
    Robert

Don't use iphoto to deal with movies. it's not really meant for that. use Quicktime or iMovie to work with your videos

  • I cannot import any video into my  Lightroom 5.4 (last version updated) for MAC

I cannot import any video into my  Lightroom 5.4
    (last version updated) for MAC
in the beginnig it was  working, just after installation and update... now nomore...
    I use .mp4 files
Already tried to use a new catalog, clean caches, and reinstalling
the error says "was not able to import video files"
    thanks

Arghhh! A big thank-you to hhps-photo, you just solved the myth bothering me for the last 2 months!
I recently upgraded to Lightroom 5 from 4 and could not import any video. But when I downgrade to LR4 it worked again. I've tried so many other solutions suggested in the forum but none worked including cleaning cache, install divix plugin, install 32 bit version etc. Finally - it's because I blocked LR5 connecitons in my firewall !!!
So simply allowed LR5 internet connection in my firewall settings and LR5 worked like a charm!

  • Lightroom 4 freezes due to video files

I just installed Lightroom 4 Upgrade on a Mac running Lion. Everything went well until I created a Smart Collection with a file type of video. As soon as I click "Done" on the Smart Collection setup, Lightroom froze. I have to force quit the program and within a couple of seconds of starting the program up it freezes again so I don't even have time to try to delete the Smart Collection I made for videos.
How do I fix this? If I need to uninstall LR4, how do I do that since there is no uninstaller in the downloaded .dmg file. Due to the elaborate nature of Adobe software I'm reluctant to just drag the app into the trash or use the AppCleaner app I have.
This is NOT a very good start and I'M NOT HAPPY!!!!!
    UPDATE:
Now Lightroom 4 won't even fininsh starting up before it freezes.
    ANOTHER UPDATE:
I couldn't wait for a response so I used AppCleaner to uninstall LR4 and all its associated files and folders; then re-installed it using the .dmg. It installed as it did originally and seems to work fine.
EXCEPT: being re-installed the Smart Collection I made for videos is gone now. However, I went to the folder, while in the Library pane, which contains my iPhone photos and videos (which are the only videos I have in my LR catalog), clicked on the folder containing the videos, and LR FROZE AGAIN. BUT, at least now, after force quiting and restarting, LR seems to work OK. Stay away from video files.
    Yet Another Update:
Wrong again. I closed LR4, re-opened it and guess what? IT FROZE ON STARTUP BEFORE IT EVEN FINISHED LOADING AGAIN.
Clearly from my experience and the multitude of postings on this forum, LR4 is not ready for prime time and should still be in beta.
    Still Another Update:
The problem seems to revolve around video files and conversion to the 2012 process. I reinstalled LR4 and before updating to the 2012 process and without going near any video file or folders, everything worked fine, including quiting and restarting the program. I then upgraded all my photos to the 2012 process and when I quit and restarted LR it froze again. I did the whole un-install/re-install routine but before I did I moved my video files out of the folder in the catalog and after doing everything as before, LR finally quit and restarted without freezing. So stay away from video files for the time being.

I can't imagine that we're alone in this; perhaps we're the only ones that care enough to post about it. =)
It's not that we don't care, it's that the root cause of how exactly our iPads fail and have error's pop up are so numerous and complex that deciphering them all (along with their causes) would be a full time job! And I'm busy enough with my real one, there's bills to be paid! lol
In response to the actual topic at hand, I did notice deleting my videos made my syncs faster, thank you very much for that suggestion. I mean, I did have to delete ALL my videos to get a noticeable effect, but still, at least now I'm not scared I'm going to burn out my Pad's core every time I add a new song. lol

  • Video thumbnails scrambled, won't playback (v3.4.3)

My video thumbnails in Aperture (version 3.4.3) are scrambled. Sometimes I can see part of a reference thumbnail frame (often in monochrome or with a single color overlay, like green), sometimes it's just all snow.
    1) I just restored my mac mini from a time machine backup.
    2) I also just imported an iPhoto library
If I browse to a pre-existing (before Time Machine restore) Aperture project, the correct thumbnail appears briefly before changing to the scrambled version.
When I select the video for playback all I get is a blank Viewer window (not video content, no controls, no playback).
If I browse to the source file via finder the video thumbnail displays and the video plays back correctly.
    I have tried:
    1) verifying and repairing disk permissions
    2) repairing Aperture permissions
    3) repairing the Aperture database
    4) rebuilding the Aperture database
    5) regenerating thumbnails (select video Photos->Regenerate Thumbnails) (thumbnail changes, still scrambled)
I don't use Aperture often so I'm not 100% sure when this started, but it seems to be after this current restore as supported by the brief correct appearance of old video thumbnails before they update to the scrambled version.
    OS X 10.8.2
    Aperture 3.4.3
    Example of affected video:
    IMG_0002.MOV
    QuickTime movie
    5MB
    640x480
    Duration: 00:11
    Capture Source: iPhone 3GS

I suggest to check the video codecs you have installled; if you use Perian or have a flip-camera, you may have an incompatible video codec installed, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4155
Why was a TimeMachine restore necessary? And did you use any helper/uninstaller/cleaner utilities, before you made the backup or after restoring? Sometimes this kind of helpers remove too much. I  this case you may need to reinstall Mt. Lion to restore missing system components, that are not included in your TimeMachine backup.
Have a look at this thread Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion,
and also at the post: Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion in the same thread.
To reinstall from the "Recovery partition" see Linc Davis's post here: Re: Garageband doesn't open in Mac Mini mid 2011

Yes, I have heard of that with certain Mac OS X 10.9 and OS X 10.10 installations. Is that what you have? No current solution but please file a bug report and I'll look into it more deeply when I get back to the office on Monday.
I've advised others to turn off thumbnails if it is really slowing down your workflow.

  • I want to create new imovie project without having to upload iphoto video thumbnails.

I just loaded 4 iphoto libraries onto a new external hard drive. When I open up iMovie to try to begin creation of a new project, I can't start my project until "video thumbnails" are uploaded. I am getting a message on screen that says "Time Remaining is 100 hours."
How can I bypass this so that I can just continue to work on my new project?

If it's a drive that you've previously used with a PC, just double-check the format - click the drive once on the desktop to highlight it, and click cmd-i (the command key and the i key together) to see the Info window. That will tell you, under Format, how it's formatted.
If it's "NTFS", that's the current Windows format. You can read but not write to it with a Mac. If you want full read/write access, you should look into Paragon NTFS, which allows you to do both. Note that some features of te Mac (Time Machine, for example) will only work with Mac-formatted drives.

  • PNGs + Video Thumbnails = HUGE render times

    Dear Users,
I've always used Tiffs before as my export option from Photoshop, but just learned recently that I should be using PNGs. However, now when I use those PNGs in a timeline with custom sized video thumbnails, the render times are LONG. I'm used to rendering cause I'm on a 1st generation 17" MBP, but I'm talking an hour to render a 24-second sequence. The timeline consists of 5 PNG layers and 5 240x180 (Multimedia Small 4:3) 29.97 videos using DV/DVCPRO - NTSC as the Compressor and quality set to 50%. When I drop one of the video files into a new timeline, FCP6 asks me if I want to conform the timeline to meet the clip settings, and I choose yes, but as soon as I put any of the PNGs over the video, I get the orange Unlimited render bar. Any ideas as far as what's causing the Long times beside me being on a laptop? I figure it's gotta be something I'm doing wrong, just like I wasn't using PNGs before. This is for a DVD's Scene selection menu, hence the small videos acting as previews of each scene.
    Thank you all,
    -Brian

Found the problem. The key was where I said "from Motion." The movie came in with Animation as the compressor type, so when I dropped it onto a new timeline, FCP asked me if I wanted to conform the sequence to match the clip, and when I chose OK, it changed the video rendering from YUV to RGB and the compressor from DV/DVCPRO to Animation. Now for the science of what I found and who I tested it all: PSD = 18 layers, 2.4MB TIF = "layered" Tif, 2.5MB PNG = 540KB
In a brand new timeline, the video and .psd were Unlimited and need rendering to play back smoothly. The tif and png were both fine to play back.
With the conformed timeline settings, the video then played fine, but the psd, tif, and png were all red "Needs Render."
Now as for the rendering itself, the video was a 7 second, 14 frame Animation clip. Still images were placed 3 seconds from the end of the video then rendered. PSD = 18 seconds, TIF = 5 seconds, PNG = 5 seconds to render.
    • Both the TIF and PNG could be freely moved around, including over the whole video without requiring another render. The .psd would loose it's render when layered over the video.
In a second brand new NTSC timeline, video captured from DVCAM tape was fine, along with the tif and png again. The psd yet again had the orange render bar even when layered over nothing.
So there's my unscientific tests. I've hated working with the PSDs natively, and those numbers show why. I'll continue to use PNGs because they're both small file sized, nice quality, and fast rendering.
As for my original problem, it was the Animation compression that was causing the problems.
What do you all do for your Photoshop workflows?

Hi, I am having a little trouble with exporting images to another drive and Catalogue and need some help if anyone can give me some advice
I am currently using Lightroom 5.6 and operating on a Mac with OSX Ver 10.9.5.
I am receiving an error problem when doing the following -
I am exporting selected photos from a particular Catalogue saved on Drive 1 to a folder created on another Drive where a Lightroom Catalogue has been created. In this Catalogue I have arranged for the images once exported to be moved to a different folder - I used the Auto Import process under the File dialogue box.
When processing the Export I receive an error message for each of the images being exported indicating the following -
    Heading Import Results
Some import operations were not performed
Could not move a file to requested location. (1)
then a description of the image with file name
    Box Save As                                  Box  OK
If I click the OK button to each image I can then go to the other Catalogue and all images are then transferred to the file as required.
To click the OK button each time is time consuming, possibly I have missed an action or maybe you can advise an alternative method to save the time in actioning this process.
Thanks if you can can help out.

Thank You, but this is a gong show. Why is something that is so important to us all so very, very difficult to do?

I have been using a Lightroom 5 including recent upgrades on my Mac Pro laptop for the past 1 year. This was purchased as an upgrade from Lightroom 4 for which I have a serial number. Today I purchased a new Macbook pro and loaded my Lightroom 5 however it is asking for my serial number which I have misplaced. I am unable to trace my serial number anywhere. I have even checked my adobe membership to locate my serial number but it does not seem to have any record which is strange as I have been using this software for over a year now and the previous versions since 2009. Could someone help me in my predicament.

  • Once I installed FF 7.0.1, all websites with Quicktime videos will not play. Each page says I need to install QT. I'm on a Mac, OSX Lion. Everything worked in FF 6.*

I'm using a Mac, OSX Lion. I've been using Firefox for years. Lately I've been using version 6.**, meaning I keep the version up to date as updates come out. Quicktime videos have never been an issue. But, once I installed FF version 7.0.1, websites now tell me I need to install QT. This makes no sense. Worked in FF 6, doesn't work in FF 7. Videos on Apple's website won't play in FF 7.0.1. Says I need to install QT. Makes no sense, QT is part of the OS X Lion install.

I had the same problem with divx also and here is a solution that will work for both first install the firefox add on Add-on Compatibility Reporter that can be found here
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/
next restart firefox then install the add on unplug that is found here
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unplug/
once that is done you might need to make sure that unplug is enabled. if done correctly after its setup you should be able to use the web player you have installed in windows to stream the videos you find on the net.

  • Missing Video thumbnails in iphoto in iphoto 11

I have just discovered lots of missing movies in my iphoto library, I have re imported them from an iphoto backup, and if i search for the keyword movie they appear, but no thumbnails appear in the photo display. I have tried rebuilding the library but none of the imported videos show up. New videos imported from my camera show up fine.

    Thanks for the quick reply!
I triple checked a handful of the video files and they aren't exhibiting black at the start.
    How I checked:
    - Select black video thumbnail image
    - Press space bar (to "zoom" and begin playing video"
    - Stop video playback at approx. five seconds in (video counter reads 00:00:05)
    - Rewind "playhead" to very start of video so that the counter reads 00:00:00 and there is definately an image / content being displayed (e.g. is not black)
See attached screen shot with playhead at 00:00:00

  • How can I delete the iPhoto Video Thumbnails in iMovie?

It's been a while since I've used iMovie, and when I opened the application tonight, I got the following message:
"iMovie needs to generate thumbnails for the videos in your iPhoto library. This process may take several minutes.
You can postpone this operation by clicking Later, but your iPhoto videos will be unavailable until the next time you restart iMovie."
I accidentally hit NOW, and the process began. When I realized it had used about 5 GBs of space, I force quit iMovie, but the disk space was not reclaimed. I need this space back now... I can import the iPhoto videos later. How can I undo the generated iPhoto video thumbnails? There was no project generated, and so no folder with the thumbnails in them. Where are they located? I would like to delete the iPhoto video thumbnails within iMovie, but preserve the thumbnails for other projects. And of course I would like to be sure that I keep the videos themselves in iPhoto - I definitely do not want to lose the videos there. Thanks for your help.

The latest incarnation of iMovie doesn't offer the 'Export with Quicktime'-options, the previous versions did.
