Lightroom 3.4 distorts images in Develop

This problem started when I updated to Lightroom 3.4 on my new Windows 7 Toshiba Portege R700 laptop. I did not experience it with prior revs of Lightroom 3 on the same laptop. Here are the symptoms:
When I enter Develop, then some of my images stretch upwards when displayed on a second large monitor if the image is as wide as possible, and stretch sideways (inwards) on my laptop monitor if the image is already as tall as the laptop monitor allows. in either case, the image is distorted so that it is appears taller and thinner. When I exit back to Library mode then the image is normal in appearance again.
Some images do the opposite and stretch downwards!
The files are all RAW. It appears to be a problem only with Olympus RAW (.orf) files and not with Canon RAW (cr2).
The same thing happens when I disconnect the secondary display.
I can do this multiple times.
I took an image, made a virtual copy, reset it and the same thing still happens.
There is another similar post where the solution was to start with a fresh preview file. I tried that and it did not work (I closed lightroom, renamed the preview file, and then openned Lightroom again forcing it to create a fresh preview file.
One some images, I find that my mask has shifted over. For example, I have an image where I desaturate everything apart from the main figure. Now, the main figure is partially desaturated, as if the mask has moved sideways when I export the image.

No. I sold my Olympus. I dont remember what ratio I was shooting in.
Default probably since I did not change the settings except to enable raw.

  • Lightroom 5 is distorting my images in Develop view

When working on images in Develop, Lightroom 5 is distorting them. For example, let's say I'm looking at an image in Library view (fig.1), then switch to Develop view (fig.2) — the image is suddenly compressed horizontally (or stretched vertically, however you choose to describe it).
At other times, images get distorted and rotated (fig.3). And at other times, images were appearing as though a sharpen filter had been applied with accented highlights — but this particular distortion doesn't seem to be happening anymore.
This does not happen to all images in the catalog. I'm running LR 5.2 on a 15" MBP with 16GB ram and a 1.2TB fusion drive.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm late on a deadline beause of this, and other local (NYC) experts, as well as Adobe phone support, are as stumpted as I am.

Did you find an answer?  I'm having the same issue with LR 4.4.  It didn't happen with 4.3
The only thing I've found to fix it is re-reading the MetaData file for each affected photo and it is taking forever.

  • Have trial version of lightroom images display in library and 'before' in developer, but can't display full image to develop.  Shows as a blue box with a white X on it.

I have downloaded and installed Lightroom for a 30 day trial. Library works fine, but when I try to edit images in Develop, I can't see the full size image just a blue box with a white X on it.  If I switch on to Before & After mode, the image displays fine in the before, but still just blue box in the 'after'.  Can't find any answer to this anywhere!  Please help as my trial days are running out.

  • Lightroom 4.1 low quality image in develop module

Hi all, i have a macbook pro with retina display, in my lightroom 4.1 the images in the library look normal but when i go to develop module the image is blurred and very low quality. In settings the rendering are high quality 2048 1:1
Any way to fix this? Also in my external monitor i notice this thing with minor loss.

This probably won't help you but the preview settings don't affect the Develop module. In Develop the image is rendered from the raw data.
Are you seeing this with raw files? JPEGs? Is it a huge camera file?

  • After importing an image from cs5 back into lightroom, lightroom is making the image darker

Lightroom is making my images darker after i edit them in photoshop cs5 and I dont know why. When i open the image back into photoshop it looks fine. Even when i save it as a jpeg lightroom is making the image darker. When i imported the raw image into lightroom before i edited into photoshop it looked fine. Is there a way to fix lightroom?

    See screen shot:
Click on the two small triangles and under <Lightroom General Presets> select <Zeroed>. Sorry, it seems that the option <None> is not available anymore in Lr 4.3. But <Zeroed> has the same effect.
Alternatively, in the Develop Module, bottom right, just above the film strip click on <Reset>.  See screen shot:

  • FCE/DVD Slideshows - Distorted Images

Despite reading the many posts regarding pixel aspect ratios and distorted images, I remain very confused about how to solve my problem.
I use FCE to create slideshows on DVD from still photos, but try as I might, I cannot figure out how to avoid the distorted (squashed) images in the finished DVD.
I use Lightroom and/or Photoshop to edit the images, then simply import them to FCE.  I export the slideshow using Quicktime Conversion, H.264 Compression, Dimensions of 1442x1080.  I use iDVD to convert the QT movie to DVD, for viewing on a widescreen TV.
I've tried the different options in QT Conversion to preserve the aspect ratio, to no avail.  Most recently, I used Photoshop to change the pixel aspect ratio to 0.9 in the jpeg files, but that seemed to make no difference in the distortion.
I would very much appreciate any help you could offer.
    Thanks,
    DBennett

I export the slideshow using Quicktime Conversion, H.264 Compression, Dimensions of 1442x1080.  I use iDVD to convert the QT movie to DVD, for viewing on a widescreen TV.
This is a significant part of the problem.  If you intend to make DVDs then you must export from FCE to QuickTime Movie.  DO NOT export to QuickTIme Conversion.   While useful for many things, QT Conversion is not useful for transferring your video to iDVD or other DVD authoring tool.
And as has been mentioned above, if you want your photos to fill a widescreen TV (ie, 16x9) then you need to start by creating a sequence using one of the highdef Easy Setups in FCE.  I'd recommend either one of the 720p30 or 1920x1080i60 Easy Setups.   (1440x1080 is an anamorphic Easy Setup and is probably also a source of your distortion.)   Of course, your images must  also be 16:9 aspect ratio if they are to fill the screen.  Don't scale up the images once they are in FCE.  As for image size, 1x to 2x the video frame size (in pixels) seems to be the sweet spot unless you are using a Ken Burns type of effect and need to pan across a very large surface area.

Why does the color red change from working with images in develop to library?  The color gets lighter and nothing shows a change on histogram but visually you can see it.

That's probably a broken display profile. The conversion from Library's Adobe RGB is different than the conversion from Develop's linear ProPhoto, so if there's a problem with the display profile it can show up this way.
Recalibrate, or if you don't have a calibrator use sRGB. If your monitor is a wide gamut model use Adobe RGB.
Assuming Windows, change it in Control Panel > Color Management > Devices, and relaunch Lightroom so that it can pick up the new profile at startup:

I get this distorted image when working on a file. When I zoom in its fine. But as soon as I zoom out all the lines, text , and edges start to become distorted. I've checked that all my drivers are up to date. I've re installed photoshop and still the same thing. Any Suggestions. ( files look fine when saved or exported, this just happens while Im working )

That looks like a Moiré pattern.  Did you scan the image?
If not, can you tell us what operating system?
And is your video card driver fully up to date from the maker's website?

I am using Lightroom 5 and am hapy about it, but recently I hav encountered a problem when trying to edit an image in another program, i.e. Elements. I used the clone tool, saved the result and went back to Lightroom to open the image there. I did find a second copy, but this is identic with the one I already had in Lightroom, and I can see noe result of the clone process.

At the moment I would say it is uncertain whether Acrobat is completely ignoring the change, or whether the changes you are making aren't affecting the ink density. I have a suggestion for a test you could make to see which is the case.
When editing in Photoshop just add a box or mark on the image, for your tests.
    - If this box does not appear in Acrobat, you know Acrobat is not seeing the edit
    - If this box does appear in Acrobat, you know the problem is that your tool for changing ink densities is not taking effect.

my i phone screen starts blinking and showing funny and distorted images before going blank. now it's blank, how do i get it back to normal.?

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data, but a reset can cure some glitches.
If this does not work, try to set it up as new device, explained in this article:
How to back up your data and set up as a new device
Don't use the backup afterwards, to rule out a software problem. If the camera is working again, restore from the backup.

  • When I make a change to an image in Develop, how do i retain it?

When I make a change to an image in Develop then go back to Library, I loose the change.  How do I retain the change?

You don't have to do anything special. The changes made in Develop do stick.
Perhaps the change isn't being shown in the Library module. There's a minor bug that shows up occasionally. When you're looking at the preview in the Library module, hit the spacebar to go to 1:1 and then hit it again to go back to Fit. That should update the preview to match what you did in Develop.

Two questions: How can I use my dual monitors on my G5 Mac?
How can the image in "Develop" be made to look like what it will print, just as it is
done in Photoshop with view>proof setup.

Still wondering what tool is available in LR 1.1 to "view proof"
As in Photoshop CS 3, and previous versions of PS, in view I can
choose the custom .icc profile of the printer, to view what the final
print will nearly perfectly appear like.
What tool is available in LR 1.1 to do the same?
Equipment: Mac OS 10.4.10; dual monitors; Epson Pro 9600 and SPR
2400, both dedicated to matte black ink. Color working space is
ProPhoto RGB. I stay in 16 bit.

  • Lightroom Doesn't See Images on SD Card

    Hi
Just come back from a photo trip and tried to import my images into Lightroom from my SD Card and Lightroom doesn't see them, all it see's are the images I took on Saturday.
Today I arrived at my location to photograph Pasque Flowers, I took 1 image then realised I hadn't deleted the images from Saturday so I used the 'Delete Images From Card' in my camera's menu and then proceeded to take a few hundred images. During the day I reviewed my images several times, so I know they were definitely saved to the SD Card.
When I got home I tried to import my images in to Lightroom and all Lightroom saw on the card were the images I took last Saturday.
I tried closing down Lightroom and opening it again - nothing, just the images from Saturday!
I tried using the SD Card reader on my iMac - again, just Saturday's images were found.
I then put my card back into my camera and all I could see were my Pasque flower images from today.
So it seems my camera see's todays images yet Lightroom only sees the images from Saturday I had deleted via my camera's menu at the start of today.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Regards

Sandisk 16GB Extreme Pro SD Card

    Hi Brett
    Things have moved on today.
I have a long conversation with Canon and finally got the images off my camera by connecting it directly to my iMac and using Canon's EOS Utility to download the images. The EOS Utility saw both yesterdays images and the ones taken last Saturday.
I have to say it took several attempts to finally get all the images off the card and a similar number of attempts to get Lightroom to import them - but it has been achieved.
Interestingly the chap at Canon said that they (Canon) believe there is a problem with Lightroom's Library (not quite sure how I go about proving that). Anyway I have tried formatting the offending SD Card and none of the images are deleted which leads me to suspect, as you do that it might be a faulty SD card.
All the relevent serial numbers, invoice and photographs have been sent to Sandisk and I await their reply. Thankfully I purchased the card through Amazon UK who are the official retailer for Sandisk, so hopefully I should get my card replaced IF it is found to be faulty.
