Lightroom 3.5 Import Errors using Synology NAS on Macbook

Hi all,
I've been trying out Lighroom 3.5 and I love it, with one exception....
When importing my archive (which is stored on a Synology Diskstation DS211j, accessed via an Airport Extreme), I get multiple import errors (around 5% of the total files), saying files are unreadable, unrecognisable etc. Some of the previews are also corrupt. I also get the "Server connection interupted" dialog in OS X Lion too, during the import. After Synchronizing the folder, it successfully imports more of the files yet still with a few errors. After the third or forth successive Sync, the operation is successful, with all files imported.
Now, this would point to a problem with my network connection or my NAS or its drives, however, this only happens with Lightroom. The files are not corrupt as they are imported sucessfully eventually. I work with the files outside of Lightroom all the time, and also stream my iTunes library sucessfully from the same drive, with no problems.
I have imported the same archive into Aperture, and encountered not a single read error or "Server connection interupted" dialog box.
Any ideas what is going on here?
Thanks,
John
MacBook Pro, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM
OS X Lion 10.7.2

I am having the same problem with my iPad and ios5 since I switched I have had the same issue.  I am a wedding photographer so I transfer about 2000 raw images at a time.  Also, is there a way to see a log of the old import problems.  Once I close out the error window I can't seem to find a way to see what exact files it had problems with unless they haven't been imported to the catalog at all ever and I just do a reimport and skip duplicates.  Sometimes it takes upwards of 5 times for those problematic files to be imported into LR just fine.

  • Location is not available to mapped network drive in Windows 8 using Synology NAS

    Original Thread:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/location-is-not-available-to-mapped-network-drive/ca7eac5c-0e3d-494b-b488-e245978e4db9
I have recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 standard edition. I have come across a problem when using the option for mapped network drives. Under Windows 7 I would normally map a network drive (Synology NAS) and I could access all files, copy and paste, install
apps, and link media, all from within the mapped network drive. However, under Windows 8.1 I have come across a couple of problems.
    1. When I try to copy a file from my "Mapped Network Drive" to the C:\Drive (OS Boot Drive), I get the following error,
"E:\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. if the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the
location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."
However, if I copy a file from the "NETWORK/Network Location" the file copies just fine with no problems. And, If I also copy a file from a "Added Network Location" the file also copies just fine with no problems. And, if I copy a file from
my "Mapped Network Drive" to my D:\Drive (non OS Drive), the file copies just fine with no problems.
    2. When I try to install apps from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will sometimes install and sometimes not (I am also choosing the option to run the programs as Administrator). Again if I try to install using either the "NETWORK/Network Location"
or an "Added Network Location" the apps install just fine with no problems.
    3. When I link media (music or videos) from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will work but once I reboot they no longer work as if they have lost the file path or link of the original source location.
    4. When I use FireFox (browser) and I set my default download dir to my "Mapped Network Drive" it will work once originally set it but after I reboot, it no longer works. However, again if I set the default download dir to either the "NETWORK/Network
Location" or an "Added Network Location" the default download dir works fine even after reboot.
While I am able to access my network drive using any of the three options, "Mapped Network Drive", "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network Location" but only "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network
Location"appear to be reliable. Tbh I would prefer to be able to use my "Mapped Network Drive" in Windows 8 as I have been able to under Windows 7.
    More info:
I currently have UAC set to "Never Notify".
I also have Windows 8.1 installed on three different systems and all of them give me the same exact problems. One of the systems is a completely clean install with no 3rd party apps installed.
Just so its clear I am able to access the "Mapped Network Drive" but unfortunately this method of access appears to be unreliable in Windows 8 but in Windows 7 it works flawlessly.
If I map a network drive from another pc running windows 7 or 8, I can access and use the mapped drive with no problems. This problem appears to be related to the Synology NAS devices and I have researched the Synology forums but only found one thread about
    the problem, here:
    http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=76687
I have searched several forums and attempted to pick the brains of my local computer shops for any incite on this problem but I have been unable to find a solution/fix.
Any help resolving this is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Based on your description, we can temporarily disable the firewall to see whether the issue persists.
For this issue seems related to the Synology NAS devices, in order to get professional help regarding the product, we can contact the vendor support to see whether the issue
    can be fixed.

  • Lightroom 5.6 Import Error

    I am using Lightroom 5.6 on a Mac Pro OS X 10.9.4
My library ircat file is in the normal (default) user file location.
My photo library (contents) is on an external WD MyBook Thunderbolt Duo, connected via Thunderbolt.
I have ample storage and RAM available.
I have read/write permissions for "Me" through "Everyone" on both the Mac and the External Drive.
    I have imported photos previously.
For the last three days, when I try to import ANY image (jpg, raw, etc.) from ANY location (hard drive, desktop, external hard drive, SD card,) via COPY, MOVE, or ADD, I receive the following error message:
"Some Import operations were not performed. Could not move a file to the requested location."
    Why can't I import?
    What have I missed?
Any help would be very appreciated,
    Jon

Thank you for your reply Geoff.
I should have mentioned, I ran all permissions with the "Apply to Enclosed Items" checked, having had learned that little gem previously. I have also deleted Lightroom preferences to no avail.
I have run disc utility on the external hard drive to repair permissions and nothing changed/improved.
However, I have not run disc utility on the mac pro hard drive. Do I run any risk and if so, can you suggest any tips?
It sure seems like a permissions issue but I have not been able to solve it yet.
    Thank you in advance,
    Jon

    Hi ,
My current client required Chinese Language - ZH (Chinese Simplified) in ECC 6.0 SR3 Unicode System
As per procedure, i have added chinese language 'ZH' using i18n -> i18n Customising -> i18n System Configuration menu.
Later in Transaction 'SMLT', i tried to add the language pack "ZHECC63F.PAT" by pasting & importing from EPS/in folder. The Import is getting terminated stating "Incorrect package format".
Kindly let me know what is the correct format. I have pasted the "ZHECC63F.PAT" file from the Language Installation DVD (51033496) delivered by SAP with license order.

    Hello Ganesh,
You need to restart the import by cancelling it and restarting it again from SMLT.
Just cancel the current import! And we would need to reimport the same with the correct patches!
Following OSS notes would provide you further insights:

  • Transferring Lightroom to different computer(including use of NAS)

I think some of the elements of my question has been answered in various parts of this forum, but I haven't found a simple, complete answer.
I have Lightroom 3 installed on PC running Windows 7. All of the photos in the catalogue are on the local drive.
I have a NAS drive which has backup of photos but is not used with Lightroom.
I have a Macbook Air which a clean install of Lightroom 4 and no photos.
I will be giving away my PC and will clean up the disk. Before I do this, I want to move all of the photos from the hard disk and the associated Lightroom catalog.
I don't have sufficient memory on the current Macbook Air for all of the photos so I will need to use an external drive.
The question is what is the simplest way to move photos/LR catalog from the old PC?
Can I temporarily "park" the LR catalog on my NAS drive and then simply transfer to the new external drive? Can I keep the LR catalog on the NAS drive and use the photos that are stored on that drive, thereby saving space on my external drive and Macboor Air.
Grateful for suggestions, keeping things as simple as possible.
    many thanks
    kerry

    Hi kerry,
I would first move all your images from your local PC-drive inside PC's Lightroom to their future storage destination, which will fit to your intended set-up with the Macbook Air (external drive or NAS, does not matter).
It is always wise to create one common parent folder per storage drive for all images contained underneath.
Then you back up your PC-LR-catalog one last time including all LR settings and plugins and shut the PC down.
Copy this catalog-backup to your Macbook Air. It must be on a non-network-drive. If you have space on your SSD you will like its performance. But you can put it on the external drive as well, if it has a fast connection to MacbookAir. Catalog on NAS is not possible, but images on NAS perfectly are.
When you copy the catalog over to MacbookAir, plus the LR settings in their different Mac-specific locations, you just open this catalog.
Maybe you need to reconnect the parent folder in the catalog, if Mac is adressing this storage volume differently than Win7, but that is all you need to do.

  • Import errors using TIFF, JPEG, BMP, PSD

I've been trying to import as assets or slideshows from Adobe Bridge (using CS2 as my main program) still images with the same message for 25% of the files, that being that Encore cannot decode the media, and perhaps you should find the proper decoder. For Christ sake. I'm using and Adobe product throughout the procedure.
The files are all 8 bit, with no layers, without imbedded file data.
It's like Encore 2.0 isn't talking with CS2 at all, or at least not all the time. Some files import fine, others simply will not.
I'm using the Nikon D2x camera and maybe there is a problem there??? Shouldn't be in my mind. Professionals use professional equipment!!!
I'm just about at my wit's end. I've a deadline here and Encore is proving to be a nightmare.
I've called tech support and they were no help at all. they did suggest converting to bitmap, and that works-- like I say -- all but 25% of the time still. What about my files are corrupted??
Computer is a 3.2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 with 2 GBs of RAM, running Windows XP.
    HELP!!

Though far too late for someone with a deadline almost a year ago, one thing that I have noticed when using PSD files in other Adobe Apps is that one should always Save w/ Max Compatibility checked, even though the files are a bit larger. I have all my copies of PS set to this, as the default, but had changed it on one (for some now unknown reason) and Save(ed) several PSDs. InDesign CS2 would not Place these files.
Another thing to look for is the excess baggage (Paths, Channels, etc.), that is necessary when working on the files in Photoshop. I always Save all of that material in my working folder, but then clean it up, when I do the final Save_As to the images folder for Import/Place into another app. I still have that material in the original working version, but do not include much of it, for final output. If I need it for Edit in Photoshop, I can always drag it in from the working version, and then Delete it, when the re-work is done.
I would have loved to hear the answer to Ruud's question from the OP, but assume that he/she found the difference, and just got too busy to share it.
As for the Nikon - should not be a problem. I shoot NEF (Nikon's RAW) and then, using ARC in PS CS2, Save_As PSD, when I have applied my settings and corrections. Never had a problem with this workflow. However, I do Image Size to whatever I will need in the other apps., so the files are no larger, than they will need to be.

  • Strange import error (lightroom 5, Mavericks)

I synched my folder to Lightroom a few days ago and got the following message:
Failed to find a place for the imported file. (2)
        /Volumes/photos-by-year/data/photos/_By Year/Family/bmp/Dad - 2:11:2012.JPG
        /Volumes/photos-by-year/data/photos/_By Year/Rock and Roll/Blue Oyster Cult/12:31:74 newspaper article.jpg
    I don't understand this.
It found the photos and doesn't know what to do with them?
The first picture was taken by an iPhone5 and copied to disk with the name:  Dad - 2/11/2012.jpg.
I've since learned that my system isn't always happy with that particular date format (and I now use yyyymmdd - no problems), but the error message is unhelpful.

Adding to Tony's response.  I got the same Lightroom 5.6 import error message ("Failed to find a place...") but with file names which were clearly legal, just numbers and letters.  These were .png files.
The same files will load into Photoshop 2014.1.0 with a warning message:
"The embedded ICC profile cannot be used because the ICC profile is invalid.  Ignoring the profile."
After resaving, still as .png, from Photoshop the files imported successfully into Lightroom.
Certainly the Lightroom error message is unhelpful, but it seems to cover more than just file name problems.

  • Cannot connect synology nas thru airport

I am using synology NAS 213+
I cannot connect to my NAS thru internet but the capsule. That means I want to connact my NAS folder but go to the airport capsule data folder.
How to fix it, please help!

Hi, both protocols  are supported, get still an error with the following message " there is a problem with connecting to serve 192.168.0.193" the server does not excist or is not accessable. Check the servername or the ip address fromthe server, check network connection and try again.  In my opinion network is ok because otherwise i could not connect also via another device. thks

  • IMovie cannot see projects and events on Synology NAS

I am using their 3.1 firmware. Which I believe is the latest.
And I have the latest Lion OS on my MB Pro.
I realized today that iMovie does not see the hard drive the way it used to in Snow Leopard.
I have read other threads here where people were using ReadyNAS and everything started working after Lion OS upgrade.
But that is not the case for me.
Anybody any ideas as to what to do?
    Thanks!

    I am using:
    - Synology NAS with DSM 4.0,
    - iMove '11
    - Lion OS 10.7.3
iMovie cannot see my library on the NAS either.

  • I need help! when I am importing my NEF files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support"

I need help! when I am importing my NEF Raw files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support". The whole purpose of that button is so that the file can be recognized... How can I make the "copy as DNG" button work as it is supposed too?? Thank you

Thank you for responding. So I essentially will never be able to use that button in lightroom 5? do I need to get LR 6? Will there ever be an update for LR 5 that will enable me to use it?
Does DNG Converter work within LR or do I have to upload pictures to my computer and then make a second copy in DNG format. and then go into LR and use them?
    Thank you @dj_paige

  • Time Machine vs. CCC, and Lightroom on Synology NAS?

For some reason, I decided that it was the perfect time to streamline my backups and photo importing/archiving two weeks before I have to be in Cancun to shoot a destination wedding...  And this has proven to me that I'm a lot less literate than I thought I was.  I couldn't find an obvious category for this, but it involves Time Machine which has something to do with Time Capsules/remote backups, so here goes.  Let me know if I should post it somewhere else.
    Here's what's going on:
I just bought a Synology DS214+ (running Synology's Linux OS Diskstation Manager (DSM) 5.0) and one 3TB drive.  The immediate game plan is to import photos through Lightroom 5, keeping the LR catalog on my computer's SSD and filing the master images on the NAS drive.  I might also move my iTunes library and a bunch of old video footage over to the NAS since both are taking up a lot of space on the SSD and I don't really need SSD performance for either.  I would also back up my computer(s) to the NAS drive, and then back up the NAS once or twice a week to an external HDD that I keep offsite.  Once the 3TB drive gets close to full and storage prices drop as they tend to do, I'd add a larger drive in JBOD, keep my photos/music/movies on the 3TB for an extra disc of redundancy, back up both that and my computer(s) to the larger drive, and back up the larger drive to the offsite external HDD.
(In the nearer future, I'd also like to get the NAS set up so that I can remotely access at least the photo library, if not everything, with my iPhone and Macbook Pro.  In the farther future, I'd like to use the NAS to host my [currently nonexistent] website and mail server.  Finally, of lowest priority would be hosting a Minecraft server on the NAS; I'm already financing one for my kid brothers as an ongoing Christmas gift, so for them to have a server while keeping that money in pocket would be nice.  I'm not begging for step-by-step instructions on all of this right now, but if you happen to know of any good links they'd be appreciated; and I want to make sure I configure the NAS now so that I can add all this in later.)
That's a lot of stuff for one piece of equipment... Anyone who has this hardware, is familiar with DSM, or has done any of this stuff: am I out of my mind or is this doable?
    Here are the current questions:
Up until now I've been using Time Machine on a directly attached external drive, but this "bootable copy" that Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) makes is intriguing.  However- that requires a locally mounted drive formatted in HFS+, and since my NAS is Linux based as far as I understand any drive I install will be formatted to EXT4.  I can set up an iSCSI LUN through DSM which would allow me to create the illusion of a locally attached drive, but could I format this 'phantom drive' to HFS+ so it will support OSX system files?  Even if yes, would I be able to boot off it - or does the iSCSI not kick in until after OSX boots anyway, effectively rendering it useless as a boot drive?  Not a huge deal since I can boot off an SD card, but it would be good to know since that would make things slightly more convenient.
If I can’t boot off the iSCSI 'phantom drive', then I should just be able to use Time Machine for backups to the NAS since it looks like DSM supports that.  I thought I’d still need CCC to back up the NAS to the offsite HDD, but it looks like DSM can do that too.  Would I have any other reason to buy CCC, then?  Would DSM be able to routinely backup the library drive to the main backup drive once I have both installed in the NAS?
How would I set up the NAS so that it always has the same network IP when rebooting?  I don't plan for this to be a frequent event, but it would be a minor inconvenience to have to go through Synology's disc assistant and change my browser's bookmark every time there's a power outage, which I’d like to avoid if possible.  (From the basic research I've done in that area so far it also seems like that would be more important for remote access and using the NAS as a web host or mail server.)
I'll want to get my mac to connect to the NAS automatically upon booting or waking, but it looks like there are adequate tutorials for doing that with automator and/or terminal.  Any experiences with this being fairly easy, or tips/tricks if it isn't?
I know I couldn't export them, but does anyone happen to know if I could still edit and/or display the sidecar images in my Lighroom 5 catalog while I was disconnected from the NAS containing the original files?  I guess that isn’t a deal breaker, but it’d be good to know if I can or if there’s any sort of additional setup to facilitate this.
Currently the NAS is set up as "basic" since it only has one drive.  When I add the second, I can convert the NAS to JBOD without erasing the current drive, right?
Should I do any sort of partitioning or formatting right now to make sure that the NAS is web hosting friendly, and that those accessing the future website or Minecraft server can’t get into or corrupt my personal files and backups?
That’s all my tired mind remembers for right now; I’ll add more questions if/when they come up.
Thanks in advance for the help!

That's the problem with using a 3d-party NAS with Time Machine; it has it's own software that's supposed to interact with OSX, and when something goes wrong, it can be very hard to sort out just what and where the problem is.
First, make sure that model is fully compatible with Time Machine on Lion (some are, some aren't), and install any software/firmware updates Synology has for it.
Second, make sure the names (of all odd things) of your Mac and network aren't too long and don't contain any special characters, per #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Third, make sure you're following Synology's instructions exactly.

  • I keep getting the error:  "lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error" when trying to import from a catalog?

I have around 400,000 photos of 15 years so given the high number, I organized all my photos into 6 catalogs to avoid potential problems. All the photos and the catalogs are in a 4TB Seagate external hard drive. I use Adobe Lightroom 5 and I use a PC with the latest Windows Office 2013.
I wanted to have a NEW Catalog of all my rated 1 Star+ photos of all the years in a single Catalog. So I created what I called Star+ Catalog and I was told the best option is to import a Catalog at a time and given that there is no means to filter importing only Stared photos, I would import all the photos and then delete all the UnStared photos. I did that for Catalog Year 2014 but at the end gave me the message: "lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error". It actually had imported around 40k photos from about 50k total. I tried again and again and every time I end up with the same thing. I created another new Catalog and stared from scratch and the same ting happened: the ONLY EXACT 40k or so photos were imported and the rest were not!! When I imported Catalog Year 2013 of around 45k photos, it worked perfectly. But when I imported Catalog Year 2012 of 35k photos, the same thing happened!!
I then tried exporting the needed photos to a new Catalog and that worked.  But then when I try to import them again from my Master *+ Catalog I get the same error again!!
I also tried creating a new Master *+ Catalog and tried to import the Catalogs of each year into it and the same error happened again!!!
Any advice: 1) on how to solve this? and 2) if there is a better and easier way to create this Master Catalog of All Stared Photos of All my Catalogs?

This is a duplicate thread - see here

OK, my starting point is that LR can happily contain 400000+ photos, and it's a mistake to create a 1 star plus catalogue as you suggest. Instead, I'd recommend you create a master catalogue of all your photos, which you can then query however you want - 2 star, or a certain keyword, or with "xyz" in the title etc.
If you are intent on going that way, you could try a slight change from what you've done so far. Instead of trying to import an entire catalogue and then delete no-star pictures, take the 2014 and 2012 catalogues and select only the 1 star photos. Then do an Export as Catalog for these items, and import the 2014-1star and 2012-1star into your new catalogue. That may get you past the problem images which I suspect are the problem.
If that doesn't work, or if you follow my initial advice, you're going to need to identify the image where the failure occurs. You may have a corrupt image file, and replacing it from your backup may be sufficient to resolve the problem. Alternatively, it may be a corrupt record in the catalogue, and in this case it may be sufficient to remove the image from the catalogue and import it again. You might try selecting everything in the 2014 catalogue and seeing if you can do an Export as Catalog, creating a clean 2014, and deleting 2014's previews folder might also get rid of a potential problem. Something else is to try the Export as Catalog for images 1-40000, then a second Export as Catalog for images 40002-50k.
So a few things you'll need to try, rather than a magic bullet, and a recommendation to change the underlying direction.

Following error message 'The item “iPhoto Library” can’t be moved because “10.0.1.3” can’t be modified' pops up, when I'm trying to copy my iPhoto library to my  Synology NAS. Any thoughts what I need to do in order to succeed?

Would you rather recomment me to change to another programme like to iphoto to store and work with my photos?
I would use the NAS for documents and other data that do not need a library with database files inside. For iPhoto a small portable drive that you can plug in directly would be perfect; you can get one for 79$ http://mac-portable-hard-drive-review.toptenreviews.com/western-digital-review.h tml
Before you try to copy your iPhoto library anywhere, make sure it does not have any inconsistencies, that could prevent copying. Run a rebuild, using the First Aid tools. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it: Re: iPhoto version 8.1.2
The item “iPhoto Library” can’t be moved because “10.0.1.3”
That error message is very typical for copying between incompatible file systems. I get this error message usually when I try to move iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries to drives with MS Dos (FAT) or unix formatting, or when some of the image files inside the library contain ethnic characters (Umlaute), have very long file names, or the filenames contain other special characters.
Do you have any other large data sets that you could try to move to your NAS instead of your iPhoto library?  Movies, Music? Then move these first to have enough working space, when you try to move the iPhoto library. If you are running out of space, it will be difficult for the OS to move large amounts of data at once. That will need working space.
