Lightroom 3.5 RAW file color shift

I have a question about how LR interprets/presents RAW files.  I do understand that RAW files are just sensor data, and the preview that is shown by the camera is how the camera software itself is processing the RAW data into a JPG.  Also, I understand that different RAW processors interpret this data slightly differently.  That said, I like how my raw files look based on how my cameras (60D and Rebel xsi) show them.  The exposure, color, and saturation levels are great and based on this look, they would require only a few tweaks.  When I upload the RAW files to LR, initially, the files look the same or very similar as they did in my camera's preview. However, when I click on each file in library or develop, the file will initially, for about a second, show up as it originally came over, but LR will then say "loading" and the photo will get much darker and duller.  Why is this?  As I mentioned, I do understand that different programs interpret a camera's data differently, but it appears that LR is originally "seeing" the photos as I want them to look and then for some reason is interpreting them to be something different; why will the photo not stay as it originally looks when I first upload it?  This is requiring more editing on my end.  One other thing I have noted is that my RAW files already have adjustments made to them upon upload (exposure, brightness, etc.)  I noted another post that addressed this and indicated that there were settings that I would need to reset to correct this.  Is this also why the look of my photos is changing, or is that a different reason?
Thanks!

Lee, the auto lighting optimizer on the 60D is on the light setting I believe...there are several settings and it is on the lowest one.  As the auto lighting optimizer affects JPEGs (from what I understand), I guess I can extrapolate that the preview that the camera is showing me is "optimized" (and is a JPEG) but the RAW file is not?  As far as the values set to zero on RAW upload, I initially thought that they were NOT set to zero, but then was recently told that they were which confused me a bit, but you both have confirmed that my original thinking was correct.
Hal, I have done some tinkering with the camera profiles but I will need to investigate it further based on your suggestion.  Thank you.
One more question:  Would it make sense for me to upload my RAW files using Canon's software rather than LR, then transfer them to LR?  Or would this be pointless because LR is going to re-interpret them its own way anyway?  I would rather use LR only because it's so much easier.
Again, thank you both for your information.

when will lightroom support d750 raw files?

No one who knows can say and no one who says knows.  I’d GUESS it’ll be before the end of November, around the time Canon releases the 7D Mark II which has already been announced by has a ship date sometime in November according to B&H.
While you’re waiting, you can download the DNG Converter 8.7 RC from Adobe Labs, and convert your NEFs to DNGs and import those DNGs into LR.  The DNGC is in the CS6 branch of the ACR 8.7 download, here:

  • Nikon D5200 and Lightroom 4 - Incompatible Raw Files

I just purchased a Nikon D5200. When I attempted to import my photographs into Lightroom 4, the raw files were incompatible. Every support topic I found said that I needed to go to the help menu in Lightroom and click "check for updates." But when I go to the help menu there is no option to check for updates. After I attempted to import the files and the dialog box said that the import failed there was a option to check for updated. When I clicked on this nothing happened.
I manually downloaded version 4.4. I installed it, but when I open Lightroom it still says I am running 4.1. I have restarted Lightroom and my computer.

On my MAC, Lightroom has ALWAYS replaced the old one.  This has been on Snow Leopard thru Mountain Lion.   It just replaces the "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.app" in the applications folder with the new package.  The Dock icon then points to the new one.  I have never ran a RC so maybe this has something to do with it.

  • Can you somehow use Lightroom to rename RAW files?

Okay let's say in one folder on my hard drive I have three RAW files: _DSC0001.NEF and _DSC0002.NEF and _DSC0003.NEF. Now let's say I have reformatted my memory card so my camera will once again start labeling new images with _DSC0001.NEF.
So let's say now I go out and shoot three more RAW files: _DSC0001.NEF and _DSC0002.NEF and _DSC0003.NEF.
If I try to transfer these brand new images into my original folder there will be some duplicate naming which you can't do.
What I have been doing is going into the new folder that holds the new three images and renaming them: so I change _DSC0001.NEF to _DSC0004.NEF and I change _DSC0002.NEF to _DSC0005.NEF and I change _DSC0003.NEF to _DSC_0006.NEF.
Instead of me having to manually rename each photo I was wondering if I could import these new photos into Lightroom and then tell Lightroom to export these RAW images but starting at the sequence _DSC0004.NEF...and so forth.
    I mean I can't have a folder that has this: _DSC0001.NEF and then _DSC0001.NEF.
I hope I have made myself clear.
Or am I doing this all wrong?
And I would want Lightroom to export the original, unedited RAW file. It's just that I would be using Lightroom to rename them to keep proper sequencing.

This is the Help page you should read: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/3.0/Using/WSCF140965-2440-4b65-9F88-AA0283034B11.htm l
It can take a little getting used to but once you have you will find it quite easy.
By the way I rename my files with the date first (GW20110514-12345.xxx) which may be useful to you.

  • Using Lightroom 5.7, Raw files become from my Nikon D810 become corrupted when I select them to view or edit.

.Updated to Lightroom 5.7 to accommodate the Nikon D810. Upon importing RAW files to the files become corrupted when they are selected to be viewed or edited.
I am using Windows 7, 64 bit, with 8 GB Ram.
    Any help would be appreciated.

There are several likely sources of corruption, and video card would be far down on my list of possible suspects.
The transfer from camera card to hard disk is the most likely place for problem, either the card reader or USB cable can go bad. Another likely source of problems is the computer's hard disk is starting to fail. The camera card itself may be bad. And lastly, the memory in the computer may be malfunctioning.

  • Lightroom not supporting Raw files from Nikon D5200

hi only new here ,has any one else found this problem ,just bought the Nikon D5200 and i always shot in RAW but have now found after my first shot with the new camera that Lightroom 4.3 wont support Raw Files from this camera

    Yes it does.
    See here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Scroll down to Nikom (it goes alphabetically by vamera makers), tne D5200 is listed as being supported in Lr 4.3.
What does Lr say? Do you get an error message?
Also, did you use an older version of Nikon Transfer or Niko n View? There is something in these older versions that makes the files not readable for Lr.
Update any Nikon software you might have.

  • CS3 raw conversion color shift

When using the RAW converter in CS3 there is a noticeable change in color from the RAW image to the converted image. I am using two Dell E228WFP monitors that have been calibrated and this allows me to see both images at the same time. I moved the images so they sat side by side on the same monitor and a difference in color was still evident.
I suspect something is happening in the conversion process and would appreciate any suggestion to correct this.
I am using a Dell Dimension 9200 with a VISTA operating system.
    Thanks

What application is displaying the raw file, and which application is displaying the converted file?
If you are looking at the preview of the raw file in Camera Raw's dialog--which application is hosting the Camera Raw plugin at the time?

  • Lightroom Mobile and Raw files in Camera Roll

I made a new collection in Lightroom Mobile.  I tried to add some files from my camera roll.  The raw files in my camera roll do not show up when I click on the Add from Camera Roll button.  Is working with raw files in the camera roll not an option in Lightroom Mobile?  My NEF files from my mac have synced over just fine.

This reply may seem a bit old, but I  just started using Lightroom (Desktop and Mobile) this week. I do a good bit of international shooting
(four continents thus far). So I am always looking for ways to improve what I do - especially keeping images safe in the field.
I am shooting with a full frame DSLR and Have and IPAD Mini 3 with 128 Gb
From my experimentation I can tell you the following:
    1. You can import raw files to an Ipad using the camera connection kit. Either direct from camera or using card reader.
    2. The images show up in the IPAD camera roll, but what you are really seeing is the embedded jpeg from the raw file.
    3. There are other APPS that can read these - I currently use PHOTOGENE (I have nothing to do with the company, just a customer) It allows me to do basic edits as well as ad watermarks prior to sending images to Social Media etc.
My theory on Lightroom Mobile and Ipad:
Lightroom mobile syncs your edits between you collection on your Ipad and you Collection on your desktop via WIFI. All of this is done
with "smart"  Previews. These are very small and take very little bandwidth.
I would imagine the syncing between the Ipad and Desktop is handled much like "copying edits" on your desktop in Lightroom. As an example - You have two different images of a dog in Lightroom on your desktop you pull up the first and increase brightness and then increase saturation. You can then choose to copy those edits - pull up the second dog image and paste the edits - and magically the second dog image has increased brightness and saturation.
So, when you are editing a Collection that started on your Desktop in Mobile on you I pad - Lightroom isn't syncing by sending the entire edited image it actually is doing a long distance cut and paste of the edits you perform (very little bandwidth).
For this to work with a RAW file that was just added to and Ipad in the field - the whole Raw image would have to be sent first. (My raw images are 23- 27 meg). So you can see the problem. As a serious photographer that sells my work, I would never consider doing final edits on Lightroom Mobile - Since I use Lightroom on my desktop in conjunction with Photoshop CC, OneOne Suite 9 and Photomatix
The reason that Photogene works is that it is only manipulating the embedded Jpeg file from Raw file. It never has to export the raw file.
DON'T DISMISS THE IPAD/Lightroom Mobile AS A VALUABLE TOOL FOR PHOTOGRAPHY - HERE ARE A FEW REASONS.
Backups in the field. When on a trip where I will be filling many cards, I don't believe in pulling a cared in and out of the camera. I leave a card in the camera until almost but not completely full. At that point I connect the Camera via USB to the Ipad Camera adapter and plug that into my I pad. I then download all images. I then remove the card and store it in a case.
I can now view my images on the bigger and WAY better Ipad Retina Screen. If I have some I want to share before I get home I can make some basic edits to the Jpeg with Photogene and send those via email, Facebook, etc.
I am not secure with on one backup of my card - So I carry a Small Ravpower unit. ($40.00 on Amazon, etc. The Ravpower serves as a backup charger for my Idevices - But most importantly it has a CF clot and a USB port. I place a cf CARD in the slot and/or a thumbdrive in the USB port. (since the Ravpower holds a charge you can also plug in a portable Drive via USB (like a WD Passport)
Using the free App for the RavPower unit I can then set up a private WIFI network between my Ipad and the Ravpower unit and copy the raw files to it. (it takes a while so I usually start this just before turning in and have both the Ravpower and the Ipad connected to charging cables. So now I have my raw stored on the card, the Ipad and whatever I hooked to the Ravpower.
Another great use of Lightroom Mobile and an Ipad is to share you images using Apple TV. My wife doesn't like to sit around the PC fpr long periods of time. So I create collections Using Lightroom Desktop and then pull them up on Lightroom Mobile and send via Apple TV and AIRPLAY as a slideshow on our large screen TV.
Hope some of the above is useful to someone.

  • Can Lightroom 5 corrupt RAW files?

I just started using Lightroom 5 and the following thing has happened to me twice within an hour.
Normally, I first rank the photos and then tweak a bit the 4* photos before I export them.
So I go through every file at least once, if not twice. As I was about to assign a keyword to the attached image, it suddenly turned into what you can see - it's been a totally normal photo. The weirdest thing is that the original RAW image is damaged, too. I did a bit of digging around and in theory, Lightroom has Read Only access to the original RAW files - yet the original file is corrupted, too.
Any guess what the cause might be? I'm using an older Canon 1Ds Mk III.

Lightroom doesn’t touch the files, it simply works with metadata. The problem is most likely to be hardware related. It’s really a process of elimination e.g. testing memory card, card reader, hard drive, external hard drive/network, memory (RAM) which sometimes fails on older computers.

  • Lightroom Mobile - Importing Raw Files from the iPad

Using the iPad connection kit, I imported a few Raw files (CR2) into my iPad Air. When I tired to import them into a collection but Lightroom Moble did not "see" the raw images yet they are showing in the last imported album on the iPad. • Lightroom Mobile and RAW-files on iPad's

    Hello,
In a Dutch photo magazine called ZOOM.nl I have read, that it is impossible to get RAW-files from a camera (I guess they mean through the SD-card adapter) on an iPad to work with them in Lightroom Mobile!?
Is this true? Because on the official Apple-site I read Enhance everything from smartphone photos to raw images from DSLRs in the description of LR Mobile on iPad's.
    Which statement is correct?
    Best regards,
