Lightroom 3 cannot open because another application already has it opened. I received this confirmation after sending photo files to my E Book. Please help.

Look in the folder where your catalog is and remove the file with a .lock extension. That should do the trick. The file is to prevent two openings of the same catalog and is usually left when Lightroom is closed incorrectly.

I am using Lightroom 4. I have been working on one catalogue & then switched to another. Everytime I try to open the first catalogue it say it is already open by another application. It is not open anywhere else. I have obviously rebooted my PC but the same error comes up. I can go to the backup of the catalogue, but I have done a lot of work on the images since then. With Lightroom closed down, use Explorer to browse to the folder that contains the catalog that you are trying to open. In that folder, alongside the catalog, should be a file that has the same name as the catalog with the addition of a ".lock" extension. This is the lock file that is created every time you open a catalog and is supposed to be deleted when you close that catalog. If it already exists when you try to open the catalog, you get the problem that you are experiencing. So, if that "lock" file is there, simply delete it (making absolutely certain you delete the file ending in ".lock" only). Then you should be able to start Lightroom and open that catalog.

This message is probably due to the fact that the so-called "lock-file" has not been deleted when you last exited Lr.
In your OS (Mac Finder / Win Explorer) open the folder that contains the Lr catalog. If you don't know where it is, see here for your OS: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-4.html
The Lr catalog is the file ending with < .lrcat>. Don't touch that one. But see if there is just besides it another file with the ending <lrcat.lock>. This is the so-called lock-file that prevents that Lr can be opened in more than one instances. It should be present when Lr is open but should not be there when Lr is closed.
If you see this lock-file while Lr is closed, send it to the Trash-Bin / Recycle Bin, i.e. delete it. You should then be able to open Lr.

I attempted to open Final Cut Express this morning and got the message, "Protection Error - This application cannot continue because another application with an identical serial number is already running on another computer on your network".
I have no other FCE on any computers...this is the only mac running (iMac 2008 model). I used a preference manager app and deleted preferences...didn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled FCE...didn't work.
This is the first time I have used FCE since installing the Yosemite OS, so I'm thinking perhaps that has something to do with it.
Any ideas?

There have been recent posts appearing about your problem. I'm not sure if anyone has found a solution.
FCE was abandoned by Apple years ago, and they are currently making Operating Systems without regard to how it impacts FCE.

That is what I would try - a fresh install - but your need to use FCS remover (from the same software source as Preference Manager) to make sure you get all traces of your existing installation off the drive prior to doing the installation:

If you use FCS Remover, and reinstall the other problem may be that Apple has apparently removed the Software Upgrade to FCE 4.0.3.
So unless you have a 4.0.3 install disk, or you hadn't upgraded past the version number of the install disk you do have, you legacy projects may be tagged as being created with a later version than you have and not open.

Using Windows Explorer or Finder on the Mac, go to the folder that contains your Lightroom catalog. You'll probably find a file there with the .lock extension. After you delete that file you should be able to start Lightroom again.

Make sure you don't have another copy of Lightroom actively running on your computer. If not, find your catalog file in Finder/Explorer. Look for a file with the same name, but with a .lock extension. delete that file. Now Lightroom should open the catalog again.

My Computer Security program was freaking out and crashing that day and I was working on my pictures while I was doing online chats to fix my Security program problems. Since I posted this question I removed and reinstalled Lightroom and was shocked when that didn't fix the problem....all because that catalog with the LOCK extension was there.

First check the version of the document with Jongware's script "Identify.jsx" (ExtendScript/JavaScript).

If it is CS 5.5 or above, you need someone to open it in the version the script says and export an IDML representation from that. Another way would be to install a 30days version of CS6 or above (CC) and do it yourself.
In regards of the script showing a result for InDesign files higher than CS6:
CS7 = CC v9
CS8 = CC v10 = CC-2014 or CC2014.1

Well, then you do want your layered file back and the nice thing about Macs, Time Machine does keep hourly backups on your Mac. You should be able to enter Time Machine and restore that file.
I had hoped opening your file in another app might relase it so you could open it in PS.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Are there photos in the Library? If not then just trash it and launch iphoto. It will make a new one.
If there are pics in it then Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. When I have seen this message it is either when I try to open a document with an older version of Indesign E.g. an indesign 2014 document with Indesign CC.
The other time I have seen it is to open an Indesign CC document with Indesign 2014 which does not have Mindsuite - a plugin I use. Mindsuite, as yet, has not upgrade the plugin for Indesign 2014 therefore it recognises that a the document was created withe a plugin that the 2014 version does not have installed.
I believe your problem will be something like that.

Reboot you system, if you have not already done so - this should take care of the "in use by another application" part of the message.
If the problem persist you will need to create a new library or to repair your library, or to restore it from your backup.
If you do not yet have any images in your iPhoto Library simply move it to the Trash and hold down the option-key while launching iPhoto again. This will give you the option to create a new iPhoto Library or to pick another one, if you have other libraries.
