Lightroom 3 Catelog - PC to MacBook

I just purchased a MacBook Air. All of my previous Lightroom catelogs and associated RAW files were created on a PC and are stored on an external hardrive. When I access that hardrive from my MacBook, why can't I open a catelog?

Probably because the EHD was formatted with the NTFS file system. Macs can read NTFS, but aren't able to write to it. Drives need to be formatted FAT32 in order to share them between a PC and a Mac.
You'll probably need to either copy all the data from that drive somewhere else reformat it and copy the data back, or start with a new EHD, format it FAT32 and copy the entire contents of the old EHD to it.

Are you getting activation errors? As Ned stated , it is easier to troubleshoot if we have the specific type of error and error detail that you are getting.

Eww, thanks for your reply, as it makes good sense, and common sense is practical when you walk into an Apple store.
I guess all the reviews and great specs of the new MB pro's made me want one...
I should probably use my current setup till it is totally outdated or simply is beyond repair.
I could ask Santa Claus for one, but by than, the 2012's will be coming out..:)

Searched online and someone suggested downloading the LR trial, and set up Cloud, then can enter the serial number to complete the purchase. Which is what I did, but the serial number is being rejected.

Ok, maybe what they’re calling Creative Cloud is merely your Adobe ID, an e-mail and password to login with. The LR5 6 update link is probably what you want to download—all updates are downloads, anyway, so there’s no need to have a disc reader as long as you have internet and the serial number.

Another issue might be that what you think is a serial number is a redemption code that needs to be converted to a serial number using this website: http://www.adobe.com/go/getserial A clue that you have a redemption code is that it has letters and numbers. A serial number is just numbers and the first few are 1160-something.

I have Lightroom 5 installed on my MacBook Air but when I try to open the program I receive the message "An error occurred when attempting to change modules". I uninstalled, emptied trash and re-installed but I continue to get the same message.

I have Lightroom 5 installed on my iMac which I downloaded (uploaded?) to my MacBook Air (via wi-fi) but unlike the iMac, I'm unable to use the program on the MacBook Air. When I open the program on the iMac and click 'file', (as people using the program would know) there are 21 options - import pics, export, etc, etc - however, in the version on the MacBook Air, opening 'file' gives me four options - New Catalogue, Open Catalogue, Page Setup and Printer - and with that comes the pop-up message "An error occurred when attempting to change modules". Any ideas please?

A forum thread from 3 years ago talking about LR 1.x which had this problem seems to need permissions fixed or new folders created with the corrected permissions. You might try doing a repair permissions for your user and/or run LR as an administrator user. I am a PC person so cannot tell you exactly how to do that.

That link doesn't show that Lightroom 4 works with OSX 10.9.3 as Mavericks didn't exist at the time. Lightroom 4 does work with Mavericks but I think the only problem is the sliders DO NOT have colors so it makes it less apparent what the sliders do. See here.

Lightroom 5 filling up my Macbook Pro

I have been in the phone from Oslo, Norway today with some support guy in India for 30 minutes after 5 minutes of waiting and two guys that could not help before him. The line was horrible, he never called back as he promised to and he did not send the e-mail he promised to send. This is NOT taking care of your customers and very annoying! I want to know why Lightroom 5 is taking up 260 GB of space on my Macbook Pro and how I can solve this. I am a CC client and a professional photographer.

I doubt something is "wrong" in the sense that I'm pretty sure Lightroom is doing what it is supposed to be doing.
You have a number of options here.
One is to optimize the catalog (File->Optimize Catalog) which will (possibly) cause the catalog file to take up less space.
Another is to go to Catalog settings and change the size of the previews you are creating. This will also cause the previews to take up less space. (In fact, you could delete all the existing previews, and when Lightroom regenerates them, they will be smaller)
You could have a bigger hard drive installed. And lastly, as I mentioned, you could place one or more catalogs on another drive. I know you don't want to do this, I mention it again just for completeness. It seems to me to be the easiest solution. But it seems to me that if you don't like this option, eventually you will run out of space on your existing hard disk and then ... um ... we're back at putting catalogs on another drive.

Wichtig ist, dass Du vom Original-Installer installierst, bzw. bei LR den neuesten Installer gleich runterlädst und diesen Installierst. EXE-Dateien von Windows sind auf dem Mac, abgesehen von einer Simulation, nicht verwendbar.
Vorher, auf Windows, würde ich folgende Schritte machen:
Alle nativen Camera Raw Daten in das DNG-Format konvertieren. Weil die nativen RAWs wie CR2, NEF, und was es da geben mag, keine Metadaten inkorporieren können. Änderungen und Stichwörter können bei diesen nur in der Programm-Datenbank oder in Sidecar XMP gespeichert werden.
Wenn Du nun alle Daten in Dateiformate konvertiert hast, die Metadaten aufnehmen können, wähle ALLE Bilder aus und drücke STRG+S, bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt schreibt LR die Änderungen nur in die Programmdatenbank. Ein Öffnen außerhalb, auch wenn es am anderen Rechner ist, kann zum Verlust der Veränderungen führen.
Weil Step 2 länger dauert, hast Du jetzt Zeit zum Mittagessen und kannst den Nachmittag zum Einkaufen nutzen.
Nun kannst Du die Daten übernehmen.

I loaded lightroom4 on my mackbook intel duo running 10.6.8. I have 2 G ram and enough disk space. It seems to meet the posted requirements. The graphic card is a Intel gma950. When first loaded, I get the message " Lightroom 4.app will not run on this type of mac"

Momiller77 do you have a 64-bit processor or 32-bit? The system requirements at System requirements | Lightroom indicate the need for a 64-bit processor.

If you are upgrading to LR4, you do not need to install the earlier version. You only need the serial number.
