  • Lightroom Corrupt Files

Within the last couple days, I have come across an issue in Lightroom. When transferring photos from PhotoMechanic to Lightroom, the file becomes corrupt. The issue comes when the file is brought into Lightroom (and even Photoshop).
I have an inkling it is something to do with my computer. I have used multiple memory cards. And tonight following the game, a colleague of mine imported the photos onto his computer through both PhotoMechanic and Lightroom with no issues to any image.
    Equipment:
    Canon 1Dx
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
Here's what it looks like in my Library view:
Here is how the file looks in PhotoMechanic (left):
Lightroom is updated to the latest 5.7 version and Camera Raw is updated to the latest 8.7 version. My colleague, who's computer everything worked correct on, was using the same version of both programs.
I can rule out that it is not the memory cards, camera body, memory card reader. I feel that it is something within my software or the laptop itself.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Brace

It will not be the software. BTW Photomechanical just uses the jpeg previews in the file not the raw data.
Are you sure it is not the car reader or cable?? How did you rule this out??
I would suggest the ram may be faulty or the hard drive is failing but probably ram. Take it to Apple.

  • Corrupted files in Lightroom

I just took pictures at a Race last weekend (took 1,000 pictures), and about a dozen of them are corrupted in Lightroom (see attached screen capture).
If I open them from the card in Photoshop, they're OK, but in Lightroom they are corrupted.
Anybody has seen this? Why are they corrupted?
Shot Raw. Canon 20D. Mac OS 10.4.11. Lightroom 2.4
    Thanks.

YES A POSSIBLE SOLUTION (cut-to-the-chase at the bottom):
    my equipment:
    iMac - 2.33Ghz core2duo - 4GB RAM - Snow Leopard
External USB 1.5TB+ where the RAW files go
Lexar firewire 800 CF card reader (this was introduced into my workflow... things started to get corrupt when I factored this into the equation)
    Genaric USB card reader
16GB Kingston @ 133x (a few of these... could be the problem too)
    16GB SanDisk Extreeme III 30MB/s
    5D mkii
    Lightroom 2.5 (CAMERA RAW 5.5)
back story: I've only been searching for about a few hours (after I discovered the corrupt files). I called Adobe... not the people you want to call when you have a fustrating situation like this... cause you get and indian guys, who is hard to talk to and super slow and pretty much said there is no solution. He didn't see if there where other people who had this problem or ask another support person... just cannot fix it. Shame on Adobe for hiring people who are hard to talk to and don't really understand. Adobe support = F in my books.
Sorry, back to the backstory. I had no problems or any corrupt files until recently. I would get one here and there, but no to the point that ever twenty pictures a few in a series would be corrupt and have white and pink lines and such.
Possible problem: There could be multiple factors it could be, and I'm slowly pining them down. I ultimately think it is combination of equipment I have especially pertaining to the LEXAR Firewire 800 card and the Kingston 133x cards. I'm definitly gonna change up my combination of equipment. My speculation is I think the LEXAR 800 is ripping the files too fast from the card reader.
    MY SOLUTION:
I faced the fact... this is an project from a month ago and I've used my CF cards numerous of times, so I know the pictures are gone... no way to recover them from the cards again. So I did find a program called FILE JUICER (mac only, sorry) that extracts the JPG from the RAW file. Works great... even better is that the JPGs are all 21 mega pixels, yippie! So thanks File Juicer for saving the day!
I hope the person who ends up with the same problem will find this post.

  • Lightroom 5 corrupting files

Hello all - I've read on the forums that some users have experienced file corruption they attribute to Lightroom, while others in response insist Lightroom cannot alter an original raw file in any way.  That said, it sure seems to me that Lightroom is somehow corrupting some of my Nikon NEF files.
This appears typically as lines of "ripped", blocky and unregistered color across the image left to right in horizontally formatted NEF files, as an example. Some portion of the image may also be missing and appears white on screen.  These were files shot in the field and originally imported to a laptop, backed up to external drives, and one of those drives used as the source for import into my desktop editing machine.  The corruption occurs after ingest into the desktop, and seems to happen randomly.
On occasion I am able to discard the preview for the corrupted file and regenerate a preview, which in turn reveals the image is in fact okay.  However, as I encountered this afternoon, the regenerated preview results in no change to the apparent file corruption.  I took this file into One One Photo Suite software, and it originally showed a preview JPG as non corrupt but when I selected the image to edit full screen it would not read the file.  I took the same file then into View NX software where its preview again appeared fine in the grid view, then fine again when I brought the file up on full screen to edit.  I output a TIF version of the file from View NX and the output TIF exhibited the same visual corruption as I found initially in Lightroom. When back in View NX, I select the RAW button in the upper left corner - this seems to generate a new preview in View NX and indeed the new preview file appears corrupt.
The original file on the laptop and on its external backup drive check out okay - I re-ingested them to a test folder on the desktop, and they read fine in View NX and in Lightroom.  So the problem occurs on my desktop sometime after ingest from the laptop (I know this because the file was appeared a-okay after that laptop to desktop ingest, but now - a couple of days later - it is corrupt on the desktop harddrive).
I've checked and rechecked the desktop harddrive (a 4tb drive) and it checks out okay.
It sure seems to me that Lightroom must read the original NEF file in order to extract metadata as well as the JPG preview file from it.  I don't see any other way for Lightroom to bring that information into its catalog, so my assumption therefore is that Lightroom in fact accesses the original NEF file to do this.  If it accesses it at least reads the file and my thought is that action must somehow corrupt the file data on random images, or perhaps in the process of extracting metadata and writing sidecar XMP files, as I've set my system up to do that by default.
BTW this has occurred most recently on D7100 camera files as well as my new D810 camera files.  The file in question came out of the D810.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm using Lightroom - latest version 5.7 (on both laptop and desktop) - to ingest from cards into laptop.  I then output a catalog containing the recent shoot to the laptop's external backup drive, take that drive to the desktop, connect via USB 3.0 and use Lightroom on the desktop to import the catalog to the desktop.
Here's a link to the corrupted NEF file in a dropbox folder:  Dropbox - VisWild-Moab-RD-120514-1074.NEF
and a link to a TIF version of the same corrupted file:  Dropbox - VisWild-Moab-RD-120514-1074.TIF
and a link to the uncorrupted version of the NEF file pulled from the laptop backup external drive (renamed to "...1074a.nef" so as not to overwrite the n.g. file in the same dropbox folder):  Dropbox - VisWild-Moab-RD-120514-1074a.NEF

  • Corrupt Files in Adobe Bridge Cache

Bridge has left me with corrupted files in Bridge Cache which I cannot delete, or scan with Macafee or look at with any other program I have.
When I access the folder containing the corrupt files my PC just hangs.
I have the latest versions of Photoshop and Lightroom running on Windows 7 (64 bit).
    Can anyone help?

Apparently some programs can read them, but general advice is to use an underscore instead of a dot.
Before Mac OS X (that was based on unix) it would not make any difference how many dot's, commas, spaces, slashes, etc you where using, the file always opened in the correct application.
But used to that I soon came to realize that not all systems work this way and since I have to distribute my files for commercial use I made a habit of using only 1 dot in a filename and that is the one before the extension. No spaces (instead an underscore '_' or divider '-') and no other 'strange' characters like /, \, '', :,' etc. but normal alphabetic and numeric ones.
I also started to use the creation date in my filenames starting with yyyymmdd and some extra info and sequence number for series. Sometimes people have trouble to find or open the jpeg attachments from my Apple Mail send emails to a windows machine but otherwise I have no problems with clients. I like to keep it that way

  • All of a Sudden, lots of corrupted files

I've never had this issue with lightroom 5.  All of a sudden, I'm getting corrupted files, some of them disappear , and some seem to be corrupted AFTER I've already processed it.  Very odd.  I use a Nikon D7100 with Delkin Devices 64gb SD 633x.  I just got these new Delkin Cards, which up until now, were smokin'!  Now I don't know if its the card or lightroom.  The cards were formatted like usual before I used them.  Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
    Ken

Ok, I got the Delkin card reader and I only had 7 corrupted photos instead of dozens out of 500 imported.  So there's a positive.
As for the question of the RAM upgrade, I got the RAM from Out of This World Computing http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/.  It was installed by UbreakIfix (You Break , I fix).  I know the "Mac" guy over there and there have been no other issues otherwise.  This Macbook flies better than ever.
The fact that you are still seeing corrupted files implies that the reader wasn't the issue. It is possible that the built in reader just maps to different parts of memory than the external one. Normally I would 100% trust RAM from OWC. I've bought memory from them for decades now and never seen a dud. However, you might have some bad memory here. One thing to try is to revert to the old memory and see if you still have the problem. It is strange that you are not seeing massive problems just running the computer though. If images are corrupting that frequently I would expect that to happen to other parts of memory too. Have you checked for a hard disk problem? Open Disk Utility (from /Applications/Utilities) and select the top level of your hard disk. Check if it says "S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified" in the bottom of the screen. Then click on the hard disk icon that represents your internal disk (usually "Macintosh HD") and click "Verify Disk". If there are any errors found, it will tell you how to repair them. If you don't see any errors, try doing a "repair Disk Permissions".

  • Starting to get corrupted files

Since I upgraded to Lightroom 4 last week, I've had two occasions where Windows 7 operating system at boot tells me I have corrupt files on the separate 2TB drive I use to store Lightroom catalog and photos on.  One difference between my LR3 vs LR4 settings was that I turned on the option to write XMP data to files per advice from Adobe evangelist that this is a better backup strategy in case LR catalog gets corrupt.  Wondering whether the LR 4 background process to write out XMP is causing the problem.
It might be a self inflicted wound, as last night, I was importing iPad screenshot PNG files into Bridge, batch renaming them and then exporting them to hard drive as JPG (when is Lightroom going to support PNG?) and synchronizing that folder in LR4 so that I can view in LR4. Maybe the fact that I have LR4 and Bridge open at the same time and doing some operations corrupted them?  LR4 got stuck at 1% progress in creating previews, so left the computer on overnight and when I come back in morning, black screen of death. When reboot, says I have to check that drive and finds lots of corrupt record segments. Never had this problem with LR3 and Bridge open at same time before LR4 and turning on the option to write XMP data to files.

I am experiencing reports of corrupted files as well!!! First report of corrupted files came the day after I installed Lightroom 4. No problems while I was using Ligthroom 3. So far, it seems to only occur with JPG-files.
I have about 10 000 photos stored on a Windows Home Server, both JPG and RAW files. About one day after I had installed and started using Lightroom 4, the WHS server began to complain about "file conflicts" (This is actually the first time I have experienced this spesific error on the server). I then found that the reason was that a lot of JPG-files had been locked and then never unlocked again. I am a developer myself, and many years ago I had some experience of this problem due to some programs that failed to close the files. Whatever the reason was this time, it was making it impossible for the WHS server to duplicate these files to a second hard drive (on WHS, duplication of files is done by a service. And if this service is unable to duplicate a file in 24 hours, it may report "file conflicts"). First strange thing about this was that it seemed to happen only with JGP files, and with files shot many years ago. It have been many years since I made any changes to those photos. To make the locks go away, I restarted the server. This seemed to resolve the problem with the locks. My first thought was that one of the disks on the server was about to fail, but after my next experiences I am beginning to think that’s not the problem…
For a few days I did not use Lightroom, and in this period no problems was reported by the server. But then, after using Lightroom 4 again a few hours, the same problem occurs. I now started to do some more investigation. Using Event Viewer on the WHS, I found that WHS was reporting both file lock problems and some file corruptions, and pointed me to some specific JPG files. Checking the files, I found that the files had been changed the same day I installed and used Lightroom 4 for the first time. After some more checking I found some corrupt JPG files, as well. This was yesterday, and since then, I have not dared to use Lightroom 4.
Actually I think all JPG files I have browsed using Lightroom 4, has been modified. But only some of them became "locked" or corrupted. Checking the RAW files, could not find that they have not been touched. I store a lot of data on my WHS server and many types of files. But corruption has only been a problem with the JGP files…
If I used file explorer to preview the corrupted files, I still got a preview of some of them. And it was easy to see they were corrupted. Actually it looked like a number of photos have been merged together like a mosaic. Trying to open one of the corrupted files using Photoshop CS5, ended with a message saying it was impossible to read the file.
For now I am not able to do more testing of this problem, but I am planning to copy all the photos to an external USB disk, and then play around with it using Lightroom 4, to see if problem shows up again.
    Some info about my computers:
I am using Windows 7 x64 on a Dell M6400 laptop with Lightroom 4 x64. The catalog resides on this laptop.
My WHS Server is of the first version released by Microsoft (not the 2011 version), but with all updates installed. All photos, both the JPG and the RAW files reside on a share on the WHS Server. I have been using this WHS server for many years now, and with both Lightroom 2 and Lightroom 3 before the upgrade to Lightroom 4. During this time I have experienced one disk crash, but thanks to the file duplication no data was lost. The server is currently equipped with three physical disks; one 1.5TB, one 650 GB and one 2 TB.
Most of my JPG files are shot with a Canon IXUS 400 (many years ago). My RAW files are all shot with a Canon 5D Mk2, but those seem to be untouched.
I will report back as soon I have more information.

  • Lightroom Corrupt Catalog problems- Help!

Lightroom Corrupt Catalog problems reading/writing from disk when attempting to repair - Help!  I have my LR box in hand and my product keys and license info but can't find the disk. I'm assuming this is the only way to repair.  Suggestions, Comments are welcome and appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!!

Corrupt catalog will not be fixed by re-installing the Lightroom software (although if I were you, I'd still find that disk!)
If I were you, I would first check a recent backup of your catalog file, and see if that will open (double-click on it in your operating system). If that opens properly, I would just use that file.
If it doesn't open properly, then one trick that sometimes works is to open a blank catalog in Lightroom, then File->Import from Another Catalog and point to the catalog file.
And if that doesn't work, please write back with a lot more details, including operating system, version of Lightroom, and much more detail abou

  • Computer shuts on and off some corrupted files - no virues now

Listed below are some of the errors I found on event log in the laptop:
I have a Qosimo 8 megs of memory, windows 7 64 bit. Running AVAST 7.0 antivirus and Malwarebytes - both paid subscriptions. I think the model number is 830 530 I bought in 2009.
    The shutdown problem has
been happening on and off for the last six months. I had two major instances of trojans taking over my machine and it caused constant shutdowns. AVAST worked with me on one and they had me use malwarebytes and spybot and hijack this. They took over my computer to get it up and running properly, but this new round of errors a trojan was found in the registry key and the startuptoolbar. Two nights ago I had another shut down several times and after running malwarebytes and antivirus I could find no errors so I’m leaning toward corrupted files? Is there anyway to fix these files without having to reformat the hard drive?
I did run a computer repair and a computer memory repair tonight using F8 and no problems were found by the computer. I’m not sure what to do with these errors in event viewer.. I get the toshiba error
quite often and it madely stops me from going online with my internet connection, and I had downloaded a newer version but same problem – I use windows repair in network and the error is always resetting the toshiba network IP. I just put a note into toshiba on that problem.
I also use microsoft silverlight for my fenderfuse application which needs that software operate properly. I’m not sure exactly what to do with that Custom dynamic link libraries are being loaded for every application. It states to check libraries – but what am I checking for? I do not have a lot of programs on the laptop but not sure what to look for in library?

Sometimes my computer shuts down often on its own and I find a Trojan - other times it shuts down often during a start up and I find no viruses as was the case yesterday.  Today I did not get on the internet and the computer worked fine.
I guess I need to know if there is a way to reinstall the corrupted files without having to go back to the default settings when I got the computer.  Does toshiba have a windows repair disc that works better then what I did with using F8 and having a system repair and memory check done that found no errors?  I also installed the latest Toshiba service station and it did not fix the error problems in events log.  When I did a restore it was before this was added so now my computer is working properly with windows on connecting to the internet wireless.
Malwarebytes said that by looking at these event viewer logs that it does not appear that I have a virus now but I do have corrupted files and can toshiba help me in getting them fixed.  I really hate to do a complete reformat.

  • Can iMac not waking from sleep be caused be a corrupt file

I have had my 27" iMac from July of 2011 (running Montain Lion, 8 GB RAM, 2TB hardrive, 3.4 GHz,Intel i7) for over a year and a half and ever since I bought it, it has had a problem waking from sleep.  I can hear the computer running, but when I click the mouse, keyboard, or power button, it stays asleep and I am forced to do a hard shut down.  Apple has been trying to fix the issue, but to no success.  They have replaced the hard drive, logic board, usb ports, RAM, mouse and keyboard, but it still happens.  They finally threw in the towel and are replacing the machine.  They offered to transfer all of our files (jpgs, mp3s, docs, videos, etc), but one thought occurred to me... what if the sleep issue is caused by a corrupt file?  I highly doubt that is the case, but wonder if any of the experts out here would know better than I.
If we didin't have the data transfered, we would just keep it on an external hard drive instead.  But, I would assume that it wouldn't matter if the files were on internal vs. external because either way, the computer would access the files.  That being the case, if the sleep issue was caused by a corrupt file, the computer would still access it on the external and the sleep issue would resurface.
    So, 2 questions:
Can a corrupt file cause the sleep issue?
If it is true that a corrupt file can cause the sleep issue, would it matter if the corrupt file was accessed from an external drive vs. internal drive?
    Thanks so much!
    Chris

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Right my laptop isn't working. I formatted my hard drive and went to re-install WinXP. The problem being that at 56% installation, the battery on my laptop cut out. Now I can't even get the files installed by XP off my hard drive. They only show up on the C:/ when its unpartioned and in that case the command in ms dos ( format c:) doesn't work,it only works when the hard drive is partionted.
XP refuses to run installation again while these files remain. I need your advice!

On the screen going black - maybe it has entered hibernation mode. Try changing the settings in the Lenovo Energy management schemes. You can refer to my posts in my Blog on these items for more details. The corrupted files may be due to faulty media. Try a different media or a different disc.

  • External hard drive, error -36, corrupt files and slow transfer speeds

This is a long post but stay with me.
I've got an external 250GB Lacie drive connected to my 24" Intel iMac via Firewire 800. I have approximately 80GB worth of files (including my iPhoto library) on the Lacie that I'm trying to move over to my iMac but have run into some frustrating problems.
Overall, transfer speeds are erratic – fine at times and SUPER SLOW (5 minutes to transfer a 3MB file) at other times. At first I was transferring entire folders, but after always getting errors (error -36 to be exact), I was having to transfer individual files. This works fine as long as the files aren't too big (which makes the transfer speeds SUPER SLOW) and not corrupt (which gets me an error -36). Is my Lacie crashing on me? Is there any hope?
Here's what I've done to try and salvage my sanity with no resolve to my problems (not exactly in this order):
    1) Ran Disk Utility to repair Lacie. Everything came back OK
    2) Ran Disk Warrior on Lacie. Found a handful of bad items that Disk Warrior was able to repair. Had Disk Warrior replace the old directory of the Lacie with the new directory.
    3) Ran Drive Genius: Raired and Rebuilt the directory, did an Integrity Check (came back OK), attempted to Defrag but could not because of errors to the drive, did a Scan for bad blocks (which after running for 3 days! it was only 20% complete and had found over 150 bad blocks, at which point I quit to try something else)
    4) Checked that my Firewire cable was properly connected and replaced the older one I was using with a brand new one.
    5) Disconnected all peripherals except for keyboard, mouse and Lacie.
    6) And at times, even viewing a file on the Lacie has caused my Finder to crash, requiring a restart of my iMac.
I'm sure I've left something off I've tried but you get the idea.
I've read that maybe I can transfer my files using Terminal. Yes/No? Does this bypass any corruption the files may have?
What about creating a second partition on the Lacie and moving files over to the second partition? Does this solve anything? I don't know anything about partitioning so maybe I'm talking crazy.
I've also read that iPhoto tends to corrupt files which makes me hate iPhoto, and myself for not backing up.
And I've read a lot about error -36's and none of it sounds good so I'm just hoping that someone might have other suggestions for me to try and save my files (especially my iPhoto files which include baby pictures that if I lose, my wife will kill me).
So if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Please. I'll try anything.

    Hi Aaron Thompson-
I am fairly certain you have a bad power supply brick to the LaCie drive. This is a hard problem to troubleshoot as generally when the bricks go bad they do so slowly and the drive appears to power up and stuff but it just doesn't work.
If the drive is under warranty LaCie will replace the brick at no charge. Otherwise they sell them for around $20US on their website.
    Luck-

  • Corrupted file unable to remove from trash because it is running.  Unable to shut it down.

I had recently converted some video tapes into dvds as well as disks that I could download onto the computer.  I did not realize that I installed a dvd into the drive instead of the downloadable disk when I asked the computer to download the files.  Instead of not performing the task, the computer partially download the dvd.  Now I have this file on my desktop and when I put it into trash I can't remove it from trash because it is running.  In other words there is a corrupted file that I have no way of stopping or deleting.   Any suggestions?  I could leave this file alone but since it is running I'm not sure how much memory it is diverting.

What is the name of the file? If you open Activity Monitor, set to All Processes, then is it displayed in the Name list?
Restarting kills all running processes. If this is not a system file, then you have it installed somewhere that is launching it automatically upon startup. You should look in your /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/ folder or your /Library/LaunchAgents/ or /Library/LaunchDaemons/ folder for a file related to this one. Until you kill that one you will not be able to delete the one are having trouble deleting.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • How can i delete a corrupted file that will not download?

I recently purchased a song on itunes and i keep getting a message that tells me to try redownloading due to the song being a corrupt file.  When i attempt to redownload the song, i get another error message that tells me the download could not be completed. At this point i just want to delete the download, but since it was never actually downloaded it wont go away.  Everytime i open my itunes i get the error message and it continues to pop up every ten minutes.  Please help!

Highlight the said file on the Music section of your Library, and press the Backspace key.  When asked whether you want to move to the trash, say yes.  Then you may download it again looking in Your Account in the purchased section.
