Lightroom 3 crash on import in ui.dll

I've been using the beta and now have a licensed version of Lightroom 3. Suddenly it has decided that it can't import photos from my card and will crash in ui.dll. I've tried multiple times without success. I don't know what changed because I have been able to import from this card before.
What I see is when I bring up the import function all of the pictures on my card are displayed and checked for import. I set a keyword and make sure the destination folder is correct then click the "import" button. The progress bar comes up but just hangs there for several seconds before the whole application crashes. The info in the dialog box indicates the crash occurred in ui.dll.

Same problem as everyone is experiencing,
Win XP SP3
no LR3 beta
just installed upgrade from LR2 to LR3
5D2 Canon CR2 files copied to local folder for Import (50 files)
existing LRCAT file
import fails after 1 or 2 files
Definitely has to do with importing into an existing LR2 catalog...
Created new LR3 Catalog, import worked
Then I performed the following steps:
Open existing LR2 Catalog
Make an edit in Develop mode to an existing image - I wanted the catalog to "re-save" itself at least one time in LR3
Exit LR3 to close the Catalog
Open same Catalog
Do your Import...worked for me
I don't know if this had anything to do with the fact that I made a new LR3 catalog first...I suspect that it doesn't.

  • Lightroom 4 crashes on import

Windows 7, Home Edition, version 6.1 service pack 1
Intel 7, with more than 400gb memory available
I've now spent more than 32 hours trying to solve this problem, including two phone calls and three chat sessions with Adobe Help Desk.  The Help desk takes me through the same checklist of "fixes" as the previous calls and inquiries and has resulted only in wasting more hours of my time.
To date I have tried the following to fix this issue:
    - uninstall and reinstall with and without the LR 4.1 update
    - create a new administrator account on my machine and run LR off the new account instead
    - create a new catalogue for every import (which kind of defeates the purpose of having LR to begin with)
    - wipe out my old preferences file and allow LR to create a new one
    - completely wipe my hard drive and reinstall EVERYTHING all over again
    - rebuild my catalogues from scratch on a new, fresh install of lightroom
    - limit my cache size in LR preferences
    - limit my backups in LR preferences
    - change my 1:1 previews
    - attempt to import images from a Nikon 90, D3s and D800 only, each on a fresh LR install (in an effort to see if it was a particular camera model causing the issue)
    - attempted to only import directly from another hard drive, rather than an external or internal card reader
Each time I have no more than a day of proper working conditions before the program hangs up and windows pops up a warning that the program has ceased to respond and must close.  Lightroom is rather useless if I can not import images.
I'm out of solutions or fixes, and out of patience now too.  I'd really like to continue using Lightroom products because of how integral it is to my workflow.  At this point I'm ready to switch to a competitor if this issue can not be solved.

    Hi Dave lorde,
Do you get an error dialog for Lightroom crashing?
Also which version of Lightroom are you using? Have you tried with Lightroom 4.4 yet?
You might also try downloading the Lightroom 5 beta that is available now on labs.adobe.com and see how it works on your system there.
As for the current issues, my suggestions are as follows:
    0. Make sure you're up to date with LR 4.4 or LR5 beta
    1. Take a look through our performance optimization documents for Lightroom and see if any of these suggestions give you something to work with:
    Optimize LR performance
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/optimize-performance-lightroom.html
    Performance Hints
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/performance-hints.html
    2. Try resetting Lightroom's preferences: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/recover-catalog-images-resetting-lightrooms.html#id_90 046
    3. Try Lightroom in a new administrator user to see if the hangs continue.
Let us know how it goes,
    regards,
    Pete

  • Lightroom CONITINUALLY crashes on import when Android device is connected

    HI,
Hoping some "techy" type can help me...
I have Windows 7 Home Pro 64-bit OS and the 64-bit version of LR.  When I first installed LR it was operating as expected.  Lately (the last month or so) when I go to import from my camera (Canon via a usb cord or via the card reader) will crash and say that the program has encountered an error and needs to close.
This is SERIOUSLY impacting my life and I need to get it worked out.
I was hoping to get on with adobe support but they are closed on Sunday.
    Anyone?  Thanks in advance!

    The same thing. Win7x64, Lr5.6x64.
I had to uninstall Lr5.6 and revert back to Lr5.5 is all I could do to be able to use Lr again. I'll wait for another update.
I wonder if recent Windows Updates may play a part in this because I have been using Lr5.6 for a week or two already without a hitch (but I didn't attempt to import photos) Windows updated on August 12 2014, I was out of town for a few days but have not needed to import photos in that time up until now.
Thinking back, I'm not 100% sure if Lr5.6 was even working for importing, the default program for .NEF files was set to Lightroom 64-bit, but I checked this during all this and Lr3.6 was the version that was trying to import. I tried to switch it to Lr5.6 but it didn't work, nor uninstalling Lr3.6 then trying to import again, nor the repair/reinstall of Lr5.6.
I've used it since I updated, probably a week or more. I still had Lr 3.6 because it was the version I used some older photos with, so far wasn't a problem, Adobe said when I installed Lr v5 that I could leave v3.6 on. (I can re-install it later).
I tried to repair Lr5.6; uninstalled Lr3.6 then tried to repair Lr5.6; uninstalled and re-installed Lr5.6. Nothing worked.

  • Lightroom 3 crashes on import every time

    Hi.
I have just installed the demo version of Lightroom 3 on my Windows XP (3GB RAM). It installed and opened fine, but when I click on the "import" button, it crashes every single time. I have not been able to import anything at all. I have tried folders and just one single image (I tried drag-n-dropping it too)
I have re-installed the program once to no avail. I have deleted the prefs (or so I think) and tried numerous other things.
    Very thankful for any help!
    Regards
    Sebastian

32-bit operating systems are limited to 32 bits of address space.  This is 4GB.
Windows places some additional restrictions on this by reserving 2GB of total physical RAM for the system, leaving 2GB for user processes. Because each process needs space for various libraries and stacks and other private stuff, the theoretical 2GB is actually somewhat less, but it depends on the application the exact value.
The /3G switch is a way to take part of the system memory away and give it to user processes, but not all applications and environments can operate in such an environment. It is only recommended (barely) for Windows servers where you need to make sure some small set of services have the largest user space.
Lr is not "restricted" to 1Gb. As a 32-bit or 64-bit application it will ask for whatever resources it needs to the maximum addressable space and will use that or make do and recover (in most case) if the resources are unavailable.  If this means Lr starts swapping to virtual disk, so be it. Since Lr has to share that physical RAM with other processes on the machine, it is up to the OS to balance what it can give out.  It will usually give foreground user apps as much as it can, but memory is a precious resource, and every process can ask for it at any time.
64-bit version of the Windows OS and 64-bit applications can theoretically see a 64-bit address space, but Windows (and, actually, most other operating systems) restricts the user space to some much reasonable smaller number that depends on the flavour of Windows (there are something like 7 kinds of Windows 7.) In the "premium" flavours it is something like 16Gb, with 15Gb being the reasonable maximum because of libraries, stacks &etc.  This is a little different because 64-bit pointers and stacks are twice the width of their 32-bit counter-parts.
(This is all from memory, BTW, and Windows memory management is a twisty maze of passages, all different.  See here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384271(VS.85).aspx)

  • Help with Lightroom 5.7 crashing upon import

    Hi,
I got Lightroom a few weeks ago and ever since I installed it, it has been crashing a few seconds after I open the Import screen. Interestingly, ONE time I was able to get it to import successfully, but the only thing I changed was running the program as administrator, and I've been able to successfully import again using the same technique. I read that this is a common problem, and commonly solved by unplugging one's phone, but I definitely don't have my phone or phone's USB cord plugged in, and I restarted my computer to make sure it didn't think I did have a phone plugged in, and I wasn't able to solve the issue. I unplugged all my other USB devices except for my external hard drive, which is where I'm trying to import my files to. The one time I did successfully import, I imported onto the same hard drive, so I don't think it's that either?gb
Any help toward solving this issue would be hugely appreciated. Having to copy 30gb worth of files onto my PC and then manually moving them into another folder using Lightroom is a tedious and time-wasting extra step
(edit: forgot to mention that if I turn off/unplug my camera (D5200), the program no longer crashes on import. If the camera is connected, even if I'm not trying to import from the camera folder and click on another drive, the program will still freeze after a few seconds)

In Solution 5, I was able to verify that I have "Read & Write" priviledges,
    so that did not help.
Solution 6 - I'm stuck. It suggests to Copy the Lightroom folder into a new user account or other existing account on your computer.
Then, restart Lightroom. The Lightroom folder is in the following locations:
    Mac OS: [user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
I am not that computer literate because this procedure seems confusing to me. I have located the Lightroom folder, but I am lost beyond
that. I don't know where the "new user account" is or the other "existing account".

  • Reproducible crash on importing a photo

    Hi
I'm working on a rather large collection of images, and since a few days, I'm unable to import photos which I stitched using hugin. Photoshop can open/read them just fine, but when I synchronize the lightroom folder, lightroom reproducably crashes (latest lighroom-4 on windows 7). I even tried to convert the stitch from tif to jpeg but that does not help. Also, I tried to put the image within a different folder within my lighroom catalog and import it from there, but I still get a crash. May be this is related to the image metadata and the lightroom database.
Is there anything I can do here? This problem is... rather painful. I know there is not too much info in this problem report, but I don't know what other Info I could provide...
    Thanks for your help

Have you tried File > Import Photos and Video, rather than synchronizing?
Have you tested importing into a new catalog?
Adobe doesn't care any more about LR 4.  But you might try downloading the free trial of LR 5 and seeing if it has the same problem.  (It won't affect your LR 4 catalogs).   If it does have the same problem, then file a bug report at Adobe's official feedback site:

I got the same problem. I tried to import into Flash cs3, cs4, cs5 - constant error in each application.
But seems I've found the reason why this happened in my case.
I just deleted the installed system video codecs (divx, xvid, third-party codecs).
I do not see a direct connection with the import objects into flash. But fact, immediately after the removal of codecs it has to work.
I suspect that the reason could be a third-party codec that is associated with playing QuickTime. Maybe.
Also if it does not help you this way, I used a temporary solution.
Open the psd in Adobe Ilustrator, copy images to clipboard, paste it into flash.
In my case the images are not displayed on the screen after insert, but put into the library.
Don't touch objects, just save the file, close the Flash.
Launch Flash and open saved file. In my case in the first run was an error.
Close the application and open it with file again.
The second time the error was not followed, the images were within the document 8-)
This option made it possible to work until the issue is not solved completely (adobe, wake up!).
    win7 64, cs5 (cs3, cs4 had the same issue)
Perhaps it can be useful for someone.
    thx

I created a new develop preset to apply Upright Mode and Upright Transforms, under Lens Corrections.  I then updated one of my import presets to apply that develop preset during import.  Every time I import using that preset, Lightroom 5 crashes: Windows reports that it has stopped working, and offers to send crash details to MS.  Once I altered that same import preset to no longer apply that new develop preset, the import works flawlessly.  I can apply that develop preset to individual images without issue.
If it's pertinent, the images being imported are from a Canon Powershot 310HS.

Certainly!  Sorry for the delay; I'm on the road.
Below is the contents of my preset.  Note that occasionally, I also simply see LR5 crash while working in it, and not using the develop module, let alone importing or auto-straightening.
Also, I'm not sure why the preset contains a clarity adjustment of 0, since I did not check that portion while making the preset--perhaps just the way LR does it?

  • Lightroom constantly crashes whenever I try to use develop, print, slideshow!

This is driving me insane. I desperately want to use lightroom but outside of the library functions and the quick develop tools, I can't get into anything else. I can import images fine but when I try to click from the library mode to develop, sideshow or print, lightroom completely crashes and becomes a non-responding program. Whats even worse, is that windows explore (not the internet browswer, the actual platform) would also freeze after I ctrl-alt-deleted lightroom and I'd have to restart my entire system.
I've installed lightroom twice thinking it was just a bad install and am running version 1.3.01, I think it is (I have the most recent update installed since I thought maybe that would cure it). I even installed another GB of ram into my PC thinking that would help but now even with 3 GB of ram in my system lightroom still crashes although explorer seems stable.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so had any luck fixing it? It's driving me insane!
    Thanks guys!~
    Joshua

Wonder if any of following would help:

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Itunes Crashes when importing Music File or Folder on Windows 7 64-Bit with Itune 10.5 and update ios 5

Itunes crashes when importing Music File or Folder ever since i updated it yesterday

You can try downloading 7-Zip (free), or a free trial of WinRAR, and unpack the iTunesSetup.exe or iTunesSetup64.exe file into its components then try installing them individually in alphabetical order (don't try to install SetupAdmin.exe or iCloud.msi). You may get a more useful error message as to which component has problems.
