Lightroom 3 crashes on search

LR 3, windows xp.  I never had a problem with LR 1 or 2.  Almost never crashed. With LR 3   I cannot search across the entire catalog of 61,165 images.  I could search the entire catalog with LR 2.7.  I reported I had this problem last week and managed to get it working after fiddling around including optimizing the catalog so I thought I was OK.
I rebooted and started only LR.  Still won't work.  It seems to do an awful lot of disk grinding.  I suppose that could be because it doesn't have its previews?  I'm trying to let the grinding calm down before I try to search, but that also doesn't work.  It isn't that I can't do any search, I just can't do it on my entire tree.  This time, even clicking on the top of my tree caused it to crash with no search in effect.  Oh, maybe it remembered a search?  So I can never click on the top of the tree again?  Generally crashes as soon as I click on Text in the Library Filter.
I would go back to 2.7 but I can't easily.  I went on a trip and put over a thousand images into LR 3.0. That was a small catalog, so I guess I could export the metadata and import into 2.7.  But that doesn't solve the problem, only delays my conversion to 3.x.
I hate to go to a release candidate but if there is reason to believe it might have solved crashing problems, I will give it a try.
Any suggestions (besides rebuilding the entire catalog in 3, which I will not do).
Judy

When I imported all my catalogs into one with 59,000 images and spanning 3 external drives, that was when I was getting the same problem.
I had decided to put all my images on a new drive and use one catalog, mainly so that I didn't have to keep powering different drives on and off.
I transferred all the images by folder - the were organised by year, but because I had accidently deleted some images years ago I had tried to recover them, and also one of the drives sounded as though it was on its way out, and I had not completely sorted the images, I found that there were some 500 missing photo's.
I found these on the backup drive, and had obviously deleted them from the working drive as they were no good.
I have worked my way through them and deleted all but 30 of the missing files from the catalog, work is still continuing.
I have put all the images in a parent directory - Photos, and so that I know where they were originally, in a folder by the name of the drive ie. Photos-Lacie250 etc.
In the catalog I had the hard drive folders but not the parent folder (Photos) so I added and tried searching all the photos this way - it worked, so then I went to All Photographs and tried a search - it worked.
I have removed the parent folder and it still works.
I have not rebuilt all the previews yet.
I was getting the crash every time I went to all Photographs and hopefully the problem has gone away.
I have tried some of the catalogs that were causing the crash before this post and they seem okay as well this morning.
The only thing that I can think is different is that the older drives are turned off.
I know this is a bit long winded, but I hope it gives you a workaround, or some other ideas, because I know how frutrating this is.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    Yes:
Step 1: Delete the preview cache.
    That's it!
So, the trick is to find the preview cache.
    This document gives location:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-41.html
To be clear: it's a folder in with your catalog and you want to delete the whole folder but nothing else.
If your catalog file path is "X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog.lrcat", then the preview cache "folder" will be:
    X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog Previews.lrdata
So the trick is to find your catalog file, and since Lr won't open your catalog and run, you can't use it to find out.
But you should be able to find it by searching your disks for *.lrcat files - do you know how to do that?
    Which OS?
If you know the name of the catalog it will help, but also: it's probably NOT in with your program files.
UPDATE: The above-mentioned document gives default name and location for preview cache, so if you haven't overridden the default, it should be right where that document said it would be - is it? (of course you need to know your user name too, but presumably you do, no?).

  • Lightroom 5 crashes every time I exit a slideshow. What can I do about it?

Lightroom 5 crashes whenever I exit from a slideshow.  I've tried using raw files, jpgs and pdfs, but it still crashes every time. I've tried using just a few slides, but it still happens. It's most frustrating and I found myself searching for free slideshow software so that I can have something that works properly, but why should I have to do that?  Everything else in Lightroom works perfectly.  Can anyone help?

    I have this problem, too.
Has anyone come up with a solution?

  • Crash on search function for HTML Help file (.chm) when connected to a Visual C++ application

Crash on search function for HTML Help file (.chm) when
connected to a Visual C++ application
I use the RH_ShowHelp API command to connect a HTML Help file
(.chm file generated by RoboHelp Word X 5) to my Visual C++
application. My application is able to call up this HTML help file
in context-sensitive mode and everything is working great in the
Contents and Index panels EXCEPT when I click on List Topics (after
I enter a KEYWORD for search) in the Search panel.
I got an error that said “Unhandled exception in
    xxxx.exe.(HHCTRL.OCX):0xC00000FD: Stack overflow”
I am able to execute this .chm file by itself and the search
function works well in this case. I am using HHActiveX.dll that is
created on 2/23/04. Is this the correct version?? Any advice what
    to do here??

Hi agschin and welcome to the RH forums. The hhactivex.dll
file is not used by the search function so you can rule that our.
Have you tried recompiling and seeing if the problem still happens?
You can also start the Bug Hunter feature in RH - View > Output
View and then select the Bug Hunter button - and see if that throws
    up any clues.

  • Lightroom mobile crash on iPad

Lightroom mobile crash on ipad when synchronization starts. I had this problem a few months ago, I reinstalled LR.
I find it annoying to arrive with a working client presentation that crash, it does not serous at all!

    Thanks!
    Ignacio,
I'm testing the manipulation on my way home tonight, I do not have my iPad with me.
I do well refer to IOS app.
    DdeGannes,
If I allow myself to work on this forum, it is because I have the CC Version!
I have a problem on my ipad, nothing to do with the Mac OS version.
I'll try the manipulation proposed by Ignacio, and you'll keep.

  • Lightroom CC crashes immediately at startup

    Hi,
I have the Photography Creative Cloud subscription and was using LR5 before as a standalone app.
Today I installed Lightroom CC and it crahses immediately when I start it. I see the Welcome screen for 500ms and then it´s gone.
Can it be that it has to do with the standalone Version of LR 5 messing it up. I want to run both in parallel for a while, just to make sure everyting is fine.
I´m on a MacBook Pro running Yosemite. I saw that there is no seperate folder for LR CC in the library, which IMO is kind of stupid from Adobe. I don´t know how they want to properly handle the different versions then.
Anybody experiencing the same problems or has an idea how to fix it?
    Regards
    René

    Same problem here.
People in this thread Lightroom CC crashes after installation apparently solved it by login out and in off CC.
EDIT - Did the same and it works. Just close Lightroom CC, log out of Creative Cloud app and log in again.

Lightroom 5 crashes every time I click on Preferences. Tried reinstalling LR5, also deleting preferences.wfprefs and regenerating LR5 catalogue. Never seen problem with LR4 or 3. OS Windows 7 French with LR5 installed as English. What’s the problem?

    I have this problem, too.
Has anyone come up with a solution?

  • Anyone else having issues with Lightroom 4 crashing constantly?

I'm having an issue with Lightroom 4 crashing constantly. It happens with 4.3 and 4.4 (I was hoping the upgrade to 4.4 would fix the problem but no...) I'm running Windows 8, 16 GbRAM an AMD FX-8120 processor (not sure if that helps or not) an NVIDIA GeForce GT 620 Graphics card. Not sure if any other info would help. I've tried deleting/moving the preferences file, creating a new catalogue and all the usual fixes I could think of but to no avail. There doesn't seem to be any particular trigger. I could be in the develop module or the Library Module. It just either gives me the blue screen (sometimes with the error "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED which is a somewhat disturbing but unhelpful error) and reboots itself or the screen just goes blank and I have to manually reboot it. I am totally hamstrung without Lightroom and I have clients waiting for their photos. I am at a total loss.. Can someone please help?!?!?!

Sadly my research since having the problem agrees that the AMD FX are not good for what I am doing which thoroughly annoys me as it was recommended by so called professionals when the build was done in Nov last year. These so called professionals also failed to see the need for cooling fans in the box which I believe is definitely contributing to the problem especially when the temp in NZ gets up to 30 deg C I am definitely looking at getting some fans in there ASAP as well. Thanks for the confirmations of the inadequacy of the proc and the heat issues.

  • Lightroom 2 Crashed - Please Help!

    Hi,
Lightroom 2 Crashed and caused a Question Mark (?) to appear on all the files I have loaded since Lightroom Crashed.
For the past three (3) frustrating days I can not process any RAW files because Lightroom will not see the location of the files I load.
    I tried:
1.....Re booting Lightroom and it did now correct the problem.
2.....Deleting and re installing Lightroom and it did now correct the problem.
3.....Folder synchronization and it did now correct the problem.
4.....Updated folder location and it did now correct the problem.
    All suggestions Greatly Appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Hersul

There should be a file somewhere that stores the preferences on the hard disk. That hsould be trashed.
OK, it is stored in :
    Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences

  • Lightroom 5 crashes

Since yesterday, Lightroom always crashes when being opened, with the note "Lightroom stopped working". It happened for the first time while working with the adjustment brush. Now we can't open LR anymore without a crash. Is there any way to repair the software without losing prior work?
    Windows 7, 32 bit, 4 GB Ram

    What is "Safe Mode"?
Safe Mode is a way to start up your Mac that performs certain checks and prevents certain software from automatically loading or opening.
Starting up in Safe Mode does several things:
It forces a check of the startup volume, just like the First Aid feature of Disk Utility. You may see a progress bar on the screen during this check, and the computer takes longer than usual to complete its startup.
It loads only required kernel extensions.
It disables all fonts installed by the user.
It moves font caches to the Trash that are stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/  – where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
It disables all startup items and login items in Mac OS X v10.4 or later.
In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode opens only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems). These items are different from user-selected account login items.
Taken together, these changes can help resolve or isolate certain issues that exist on the startup volume.

  • Lightroom 5 crashes when I load track logs.

This is getting really annoying. I'm an aerial photographer. Every flight I do, I record a gpx track log, and marry the photos and GPS up in Lightroom. Works a treat, except that about 90% of the time, loading the track log causes Lightroom to crash. Then I have to restart, wait for my huge catalog to reload, re-select the day's shoot and load the track log again. This second attempt always works. It's not the end of the world, but it wastes time and is bloody annoying.
I know others have the same issue, but I've never seen any reasonable answer of fix.
Does anyone here know any more about this?

A number of people have reported such crashes for over a year in the official Adobe feedback forum:
    Lightroom 4.3RC: Map crash
LR5.5 crashes in map module when loading track log
Lightroom 5.6 crashes on OSX if you load GPS track while building 1:1 previews
You might read through those posts to see if there are hints about triggers the crash (and that you could avoid).  You might also add your opinion and vote, though I'm doubtful Adobe will address the issue any time in the near future.
Many people use Geosetter (as I do) or the Geoencoding Support plugin.  The advantage of Geosetter is that it is widely used and quite robust; the disadvantage is that it's not as convenient as doing it directly in LR.  I haven't used the Geoencoding Support plugin, though a number of people on these forums have reported being quite satisfied with it, and its author has an excellent reputation for his LR plugins.

  • Outlook crashing whilst searching secondary mailbox (non cached)

    Hello,
We are experiencing an issue where outlook is crashing when searching a secondary mailbox. This mailbox is accessed by 4 people, and they all experience the same issue.
Initially, the mailbox was running in cached mode, but now the primary mailbox is cached and the secondary mailbox is non cached. After the mailbox was put in non cached, we performed a reindex.  This prevented the issue from reoccurring for about a week,
however it has started to crash again.

Aren't views client specific tho? All users on multiple machines are getting the same effect, we all have the Support mailbox set up the same way, but on distinct physical boxes (not even VMs).
But sure, I can try. Are the views stored in an XML so that if this doesn't fix it, I can easily restore my views? Already lost my Favorites thanks to my resetnavpane attempt, and I'd really like to not lose views I have set up...
