Lightroom 3 & CS3

Is Lightroom 3 completely compatible with Photoshop CS3? The Adobe info all seems to refer to linking LR3 with CS.

If you have CS3, when You install Lightroom 3 it will automatically recognize Photoshop as your external editor.
You then simply select a photo in the Lightroom Library and press Ctrl/Cmd +E to edit in CS3.

  • Colors of RAW vs JPG in Lightroom and CS3

    I am confused by this.
When shooting RAW +JPG on my Canon 350D, the RAW and JPG have different color qualities. The RAW is more yellow, or maybe warmer. The JPG more blue or cooler.
I think this is odd. And it is consistent in Lightroom AND CS3 and yet in Irfanview and Canon Digital Photo Professional they they are identical. Totally.
Why would this be? And which is "right" in Lightroom? The RAW? It looks the better of the two, but hard to compare across programs. But why the difference and why not in all programs, just ADOBE?
    Thanks.
    ~Bob

DPP uses the in camera settings as its starting point to view RAW files, so these files will appear identical to any jpegs produced at the same time. The in camera settings are attached to the RAW file and DPP reads this information when opening or loading a RAW file for the first time.
Lightroom does not have access to this information and so it has its own starting point that it uses when you open a RAW file, thus the RAW file will look different than the JPEG and different to the RAW file opened in DPP (while the JPEG and RAW file in DPP will look the same). Most other RAW programs do not have access to this information (Capture 1, Bibble etc) and they also will have a starting point that is different to DPP. One of the significant advantages of Lightroom over DPP is that you can create your own profiles so you can tailor your "starting point" to suit your preferences and style whereas with DPP you always start where the Canon guy says you should be.
There are a few programs that use the Canon SDK or Canon RAW viewer utility in windows to display images (Breeze Browser comes to mind). Irfranview may be one of these which is why RAW files viewed here may look te same as DPP or the JPEG.
As to which is right. Neither, none or all of them. Right or wrong is purely subjective and based on which you prefer. If you never make any changes to the RAW file you may as well just shoot jpegs and that will be right for you. But then you loose thae ability to influence the look of your files proior to the file creation which is why we shoot RAW in the first place.
    Hope this helps

  • Using vista 64 bit with current versions of lightroom and CS3

Since the new versions of lightroom and photoshop are going to run on 64 bit I was thinking of upgrading to vista 64 bit. Will the present versions of lightroom and CS3 function in the vista 64 bit environment
    thanks
    Roger Lieberman

I use both LR & CS3 on both XP 64 and Vist 64. They wor just fine. In fact you get access to more RAM. Research your printer drivers etc though. That's an issue.

  • Lightroom and CS3 extended

I have both Lightroom and CS3 installed in the default fashion in XP. In Lightroom>Edit >Pref> External Editor, the program reports that Photoshop is not found and in the Photo Menu of LR the option to edit in Photoshop is greyed out. Help me undo this, please.
    Herb

Have you double checked the assigned path to CS3 as the external editor for LR?
Does PS work without any hitches with Bridge?. Does double clicking an image in Bridge open camera Raw?. Sometimes the installation of CS3 is faulty. One sign is the Camera Raw test. Also, Bridge will have no Camera Raw prefs, in that case.
Do you have CS2 on as well. If you uninstalled it, did you clean the registry before installing CS3?
Which did you put on first. LR or CS3? Uninstall both, clean the registry, and reverse the order of installation. That may fix it.
    Good Luck.

  • Lightroom and CS3 Simultaneously - How much memory?

I've been trying to use Lightroom's image management features, but need to finish the "keepers" in CS3. The problem is my computer only has 2G of RAM, and both Lightroom and CS3 are giant memory hogs. Has anyone been able to successfully run both programs at the same time (with reasonably complicated PS files consisting of a dozen layers or so) ?
If so, how much memory does it take? 4G 8G?
    Thanks,
    --Michael

The wording of your question seems to suggest that your setup has issues with running Lr and Ps simultaneously. Disk thrashing? Memory swapping? Slow performance? What is your machine configuration?
I have an Intel Dual 2 Core machine with 2Gb RAM and routinely run Lr (on Canon 20D raw files), Ps CS3 beta, Bridge, email client, and Firefox web client all at the same time with little issue.
And have you consulted Adobe's knowledge base for performance tips?

  • Lightroom in CS3?

This is probably a question that nobody will be able to answer, but I will ask just in case. I'm VERY interested in Lightroom, but know that I will probably be purchasing Creative Suite 3 when it comes out. What are the chances that Lightroom will be included in one of the CS3 upgrade bundles? I know this question is made more difficult because of the probable inclusion of Macromedia software in the bundles, I'm just wondering if Adobe plans on including LR in any bundles or will consider an independent standalone application (for purchasing purposes).
    Thanks for any feedback.

Sorry, I didn't see that info in the announcement. I read the announcement on creativepro.com and presumed that was the same press release as on Adobe's site? I went to the Lightroom page on Adobe's site from the 'Announcement' link on the home page, but saw no mention of bundles there either. Can you direct me to a page where Adobe states that Lightroom will not be included in any of the CS3 bundles? That would be useful info.
    Thanks.

  • Lightroom, Photoshop CS3 and Smart Objects

Is there a way to select a raw file in Lightroom and choose to have it open in
Photoshop CS3 as a smart object, or can this only be done thru ACR? I've looked
over v1.1 and didn't notice this as an option.

If I want to do any editing not allowed to smart objects such as clone stamp I can then create a layer and then apply the clone stamp to the layer, can't I?
And that is where the underlying Smart Object starts losing (some of) its usefulness.
Because all those edits will be unaffected if you should choose to change the development settings of the embedded RAW.
Secondly, should I also convert all layers to smart layers or leave them as a normal layer.
    What for?
Unless you want to non-destructively apply transformations or Filters or need several instances of something in one file it would mainly cause a drag on performance. (Edit: or bloat the files’s size)
But in those cases Smart Objects offer significant advantages.

  • Raw images not readable by lightroom or CS3 from 5d mkii

Just got my new 5d mkii and went out to shoot my first images with it.  Capturing RAW only I shot 88 frames at Crater Lake.  When I got home I went through my normal procedures for downloading my images with Lightroom and it did not recognize the file type and could not process the images.  Tried getting the images up using photoshop cs3 and it also did not recognize the image type.  Finally I installed the Canon DPP software on the computer and the images showed up.  I was able to move the images from DPP to photoshop finally, but they transferred as TIFF files, not RAW.
Does anybody have an idea as to what might be going wrong?  I have used the same procedures with my 40D with no problems at all.
ANy help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    David

Lightroom 2 was released before the 5D2.  You might have to (or want to) upgrade to Lightroom 4.  I found this out the hard way.  I had LR3, and then bought the 6D and learned that LR3 will NEVER support 6D camera raw.
There were ways to get around it, but all were fiddly and I really wanted it to work the way it is supposed to, without any cobbled-together extra/external steps, so I bought the upgrade.  I was very pleased with LR 4 vs. LR3, so you may be very very happy to get an upgrade from LR1 to LR4.  Much better at noise reduction and general processing is improved overall.  The upgrade price is only about $79.00, compared to the stand-alone new purchase price of about $120.00.
    Good luck.

  • Levels differences Lightroom and CS3

I am finding that the levels adjustments I am making in Lightroom 2.1 require further adjustment in Photoshop CS3. CS3 shows more lightening than Lightroom and it is only after I have made this further adjustment in CS3 that my pictures print accurately. Any thoughts please?

Could you more accurately describe what you're doing? It is quite unclear to me what you're talking about. Note that if you see a difference between Photoshop and Lightroom, you have a bad monitor profile or have setup Photoshop incorrectly. Both issues are quite common. Or is it that you get dark prints?

  • Problems editing from lightroom to CS3

    Hi everyone,
This has quite possibly been addressed in the forums already, but I'm at the stage where I need this fixed now and don't have the time to sift through the existing discussions.   I hope that's ok?
I really hope  that someone can help me out here.  I've tried everything I know already before bothering others to help.
My problem is I'm running a new Lightroom 2 program at work and for some reason it won't convert the RAW files to PSD's for editing in CS3.  It doesn't even offer the "What to edit Dialogue" after right clicking on the photo in the flimstrip and choosing "edit in Photoshop CS3".  Therefore I don't have the option to "edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments" or "stack with original"....there's nothing.  Lightroom immediately transfers the RAW file straight to CS3.  In the past it has always  converted the RAW file to a PSD.  The "Preparing File for Editing" which appears in the top left of the screen also does not appear.  After the editing process in CS3, the filmstrip in Lightroom doesn't have stacks of processed photos either...just the original RAW file exists.
I also run lightroom on my computer at home.....with no problems what-so-ever.  I even went as far as to copy all the preferences from my home computer to compare with the computer at work.  Still no luck.  Now for the first week using this on the work computer, I never had any problems....all of a sudden I'm noticing the changes....like in the last week or so.  I don't know if some of the settings have been altered by another user, but this is frustrating me no end!!!
Any help or solutions would be greatly appreciated.....I thank you in advance and hope someone can help
    Cheers.......SHARON GALLAGHER

Jim thanks for the reply.  It's possible that the option not to show the dialogue has been checked....so probably explains why it no longer appears.  Since my home program is working fine, I copied all the preferences from there to the work computer like I said.  But maybe I missed something??
But the file that lightroom sends to photoshop is indeed a NEF file.  (I'm Nikon).  In all the external editing preferences in Lightroom, I've chosen PSD files....NEF isn't even there as an option!
There is a status bar that appears in the top left corner of the screen in Lightroom showing the progress of the conversion of files from RAW to PSD (or TIFF) as the program prepares the RAW files for editing in CS3......it's the same as the status that appears when the originals are being imported into Lightroom.....but this doesn't happen appear!  There is no conversion taking place the file name is still a NEF file one opened in CS3.
When I finish editing in CS3, only then do I get the option to save changes......and even then the message is - "Do you want to save changes to
****.NEF before closing?"  It is after I click "Yes" to this option in CS3 that the file appears as a PSD File.  So something strange is happening here.
Is there a way to reset everything factory defaults?  Where do I find that option?
    Thanks again for your help

  • Reds in my images turn orange only in Lightroom, PS CS3, and Bridge

Hello everyone, I have yet another issue that has to do with my earlier post 2 days ago...
For some reason, all of my images that contain the color red turn orange when they are opened in Lightroom 1.4, Photoshop CS3 10.1, or Bridge 2xxx.
But my images with red look red on my desktop, it's just when I open them in the three products listed above- they turn orange.
Any image that I have shot also loses its red color in the Finder view of my MacPro OSX 10.5.8.
The images are red on the camera display after I shoot them, but when they get into my Adobe products or the Finder view of my MacPro, the reds turn orange.
I shoot with Canon DSLR's and I am a professional photographer.
I'm not sure what to do, I have work that needs to go to clients, but I don't think these orange reds are going to go over well.
Anyone have any ideas on what is going on?
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks everyone

I just did a monitor calibration with my i1display2 from gretagmacbeth.
How do I find that out, where, what to do?
Reds on websites, icons, and things look fine on my Apple Cinema HD 30" screen, it's just camera files that reds turn into orange

  • Lightroom 2 - CS3 Problem - A confirmation Please

    Hello,
I upgraded from LR1.4.1 to LR2.0 this past weekend. I thought everything went perfectly fine. LR2 runs great on my system, all my images are appearing on my USB Drives, catalogs are fine, etc.
For reference, I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 running at 3.0Ghz, 4GB of RAM on VISTA 64-Bit.
However, I have a major issue with editing images in CS3. When I click on an image and select to edit it, it does open in CS3 just fine - EXCEPT - I do not get any box asking me how I want to do it (Copy with adjustments, etc) and it is importing into CS3 as a RAW file. Additionally, it does not get exported back into Lightroom after the save whether I just close it or save it. If I sync the folders, I get the "ghost" folder in LR2.0.
I just want to confirm that this is a known problem (I read all the other thread but got a little confused between issues) and is being worked on?
    Thank You.

I have a similar problem in editing in CS3 from LR2- I get the prompt box and the photo opens in CS3 but when I save it, it doesn't show up back in LR2 the way it did in LR1.4. Is there a fix on the way. Am I doing something wrong? I am doing it just the way I always have with 1.4.
Please advise, as I keystone a lot of shots of high up stained glass windows.

  • New imac, lightroom and cs3 can't read NEF files?  What to do

Adobe support is down so I am here for help from all of you. I don't have a clue what bridge is or whether I need to use both bridge and Lightroom. Anyway, I will be importing nef files from a D300 to an external drive onsite with a windows xp pro laptop and connecting the external drive at home to edit etc..
    Any help, please?
    Sheryl

What kind of filesystem is on the external hard disk? It might have to be FAT32 for the iMac to be able to import from it. NTFS support is not very good on Mac OS X. You might have to copy the files first manually to your internal harddisk and then have lightroom move them into the folder structure.

  • Lightroom and CS3 Bridge: Can they read eachother's adjustment settings?

So Im trying to use Lightroom 1.0
So far it seems like LR doesnt see the adjustments (XMP data) I have added to RAW files in Bridge and Bridge doesnt see the adjustments I make in LR.
Call me crazy but isnt that a major stumbling block in the usage of Lightroom?
Or am I doing something wrong?

I don't use RAW files, but in the case of Jpegs, Bridge has a cache. You have to empty its cache for it to see changes in the files that it didn't make. And to have them made, you have to tell Lightroom to write out the metadata. Globally, it's in Preferences / File Management. It slowed it down so I have it off. If you want to do a file or a directory, you can use Metadata / XMP / Export XMP metadata to file.
If you write metadata outside of Lightroom (I write capture date and digitized date to files from scanned slides), in Lightroom you have to do Metadata / XMP / Import XMP metadata to file. I always have Lightroom write out the metadata before I fiddle with the files and I would assume that is necessary because otherwise what it reads from the files will not include its data and it will, I presume, lose its data.

  • Processing Canon G10 RAW Images in CS3 and Lightroom 2.1

I've not found a post on point. If I've missed one, sorry.
Contemplating getting a G10. After research here's what I understand. Please, correct me if I am wrong:
    1. To process a G10 image in ACR, one has to have 5.2. One cannot use 5.2 in CS3. To process the image in CS3 one has to first convert to DNG. This can be done by way of a separate converter OR in Lightroom 2.1, on import.
    2. Lightroom 2.1 will process the image in either RAW or DNG formats.
So, since I own both Lightroom and CS3 -- I will be able to use ACR in Lightroom if I don't want to convert to DNG first.
    Am I right?
I don't want to buy the camera if I can't use my usual workflow.
    Thanks.
    sjh
PS. I think my CS4 Master Suite will arrive tomorrow. But, there is a lot of odd information about ACR and the G10 out there so I thought I'd take the time to clear it up and see if I got it right.

Lightroom 2.1 does NOT support native files from the G10. LR 2.2, which will be released in December will. So for both programs you need to use the Adobe DNG converter 5.2 to convert to DNG for the time being. It is unclear whether when you have LR 2.2 and CS3 installed whether "Edit in Photoshop" will work correctly with files from cameras such as the G10. It will always work fine if you use dng.
