Lightroom 3: Edit in Photoshop CS5 no longer saves a copy as TIFF for editing

Hi,
I have Lightroom 3 (LR3) and Photoshop CS5 (non Extended) and Snow  Leopard on OSX.  Both LR3 and CS5 are filly updated.  CS5 updated with  Camera Raw 6.1.
On one day, when I tell LR3 to "Edit in Photoshop" it would save a copy  of the NEF with current LR3 settings as a TIFF and I can edit it in  Photoshop as a TIFF.  I would see a progress indicator in LR3 that show  it saving a copy as a TIFF.
The next day, this stopped working.  It goes directly to Photoshop and  opens the NEF itself.   It's is completely ignoring the LR3 settings in  External Handling tab.
Strangely, when I "save" this NEF in Photoshop, a TIFF is created back in LR3.  That threw me off completely from LR2.7
Has anybody encountered this?  Does LR3 skip telling you if you want to save as TIFF now if you have the latest LR and CS?
Thank you.

What you describe as abnormal is how things are supposed to work:
If the RAW engines match (where LR3 and ACR 6.1 do), then LR just tells PS what the "conversion recipe" is and PS tells ACR to silently open it with that "recipe" so it doesn't have to be rendered to TIF or PSD on the way into PS.
If the RAW engine of PS (ACR's version) is too odl to understand all the LR adjustments then LR knows this and will render to an intermediate file on the way into PS.  This also happens if you use some other third-party photo-editor that can't use ACR to open the file.
On Windows, at least, there is a way to make LR render to TIF/PSD on the way into Photoshop, I fyou create a duplicate copy of the EXE and rename it to PhotoshopX.exe or some other name that LR doesn't recognize as Photoshop, then LR thinks it is a third-party editor and renders an intermediate file.
What might have happened is that you updated to ACR 6.1 or maybe PS 12.0.1 which caused LR to re-evaluate the Photoshop compatibility and it determined it was fully compatible and didn't render to an intermediate file on the way in.
Since Photoshop is a bitmap editor, it has to save as something other than the RAW file on the way out, and LR will see that Save occur and import it automatically.
Does that all make sense?

  • Edit in Photoshop CS5 from Lightroom 3.2 doesn't open file in Photoshop

    Hi,
I've just made a complete fresh install of Lightroom 3.2 and Photoshop CS5 extended on my new iMac (OS 10.6.4, x64)
Now I'm trying to edit raw-files in Photoshop CS5.
Normally a popup should appear to ask in which format the photo should be opened in PS.
But no popup is shown, Photoshop starts immediately, but without actually opening the photo.
If I configure Photoshop as secondary editor this problem does not appear, and everyting works fine.
But in that case I miss the option for a secondary editor like for example DxO...
    What to do?
    Regards,
    Menno

    Menno,
I can't help you with your primary problem, as I'm not a CS5 user.
But regarding your second concern with having CS5 as a secondary editor and therefore not having the option for additonal external editors:
You can have as many external editors as you like, e.g. CS5 as one, DXO as one, Nik Viveza as one and so on. All you have to do is create different External Editor Presets in Preferences for each desired external editor.

  • Lightroom 4.3 and Photoshop CS5 Crashing

For several months, I have been trying to troubleshoot random blue-screen crashes when (and only when) using Lightroom 4.3 and Photoshop CS5 in Windows 7 64-bit.  The Windows stop error code is always 124 (hardware related).  The crash dump files have not provided much help. They just keep referring to "ntoskrnl.exe" and "hal.dll" as possible causes, but that doesn't help isolate specific hardware.  Without going into all the excrutiating details of what I have done to try to find a hardware problem, I am now 99% sure that hardware is NOT causing the crashes.  I recently ran "Who Crashed, Professional Edition 4.01" to analyze the crash dump files.  It identified "cameraraw.dll" and "tliadjust50.dll" (a file installed byTopaz Labs plug-ins Adjust 4, DeNoise 5, and Fusion Express 2) as possible causes of the crashes.  I would like to refresh "cameraraw.dll" to determine if it is in fact causing the problem.  My question is how to replace my existing "cameraraw.dll" file with a new one.  Can I just download a new "cameraraw.dll" file (from where?) and replace my existing "cameraraw.dll"?  Or, do I have to reinstall LR4 and/or CS5 to refresh "cameraraw.dll"?  I really hope I don't have to do that, because I think I would probably have to also reinstall all the third-party plug-ins and extensions I have installed to work with  LR4 and CS5, and that would be a major pain.  Does anyone have any suggestions/

  • Edit in Photoshop CS5 Prompt Inconsistent

I've recently noticed that the prompt window which ask what to edit (Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments, etc.) when going to Photoshop CS5 is only popping up with some images. It use to be it would open every time I went into Photoshop CS5 from Lightroom 4. When I get the prompt I have choices. When I don't get the prompt it opens the image with all the Lightroom adjustments, but sometimes that not what I want other than going outside of of Lightroom and into Photoshop directly.
I'm running Lightroom 4.2 and Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 on OSX Lion. Also, I recently had to run a fix on a corrupt catalog. For those who are aware of the corrupt catalog issue I had it repaired via Dan Tull.
    Any solution would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Devin

Since you are using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5, ACR isn't fully compatible with Lightroom.  When editing raw images, Lightroom will warn you unless you choose not to show that warning again.  If you make that choice, then whatever choice you made at that time will be the one that is used.  If you open a JPEG or a TIF image, Lightroom will always ask if you want to edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments, etc..  So if you have made the choice not to display the "raw warning" again, then you won't have that warning when opening raw images.  But you will always be given those other choices when opening non-raw images.

  • Cannot "Edit in Photoshop CS5" in 16 bit, only 8 bit

Adobe Lightroom v3.6 with Camera Raw 6.6
    Adobe Photoshop v12.0.04 x64
Working on my Mac, I've never had problems with this before - always been able to edit in Photoshop without any problems.
Suddenly, when I try to edit in PS in 16 bit, my image is blocky and scattered, possibly like it's corrupted.
When I open it in 8 bit, it looks fine, just crappier.
Anyone else having this issue?  It's driving me bonkers.  I also tried opening it with all variations of the color space, but it's the 16 bit part that seems to be the issue.

Here's what an image will look like if i try to open it in 16 bit.
And... I'm not sure what could be the issue, because it's happening even when I open the image straight from Photoshop (it opens in Camera Raw, I switch it to 16 bit, it looks all wonky).
I've tried this in an older LR catalog as well as my working catalog.

  • Lightroom 4 launches to Photoshop CS5 when I try to print from Lightroom. How do I change it

Lightroom 4 launches to Photoshop CS5 when I try to print from Lightroom. How do I change it, so the printing goes directly from Lightroom to the printer.

    MartyOretsky wrote:
Let me try again. I am in Lightroom and click print. Then I am launched to PS.
    This is not possible.
What you are seeing is not PS, it's your printer dialog. PS does not have an ICM button.
And you say: " Lightroom doesn't stop working; rather CS5 stops working"
And what does the error message say that you posted in the screen shot?  Does it not say "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom has stopped working" ?
Do not be confused. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is the official name of Lightroom. This is not CS5 that has stopped working. CS5 does not come on when you hit the print button in Lr.
It is Lr that has stopped working.
And you say: "My next step is to click on ICM so the color controls are done by the software."
This is wrong. When you want Lr to do the color management, you select a profile in the Print Module, in the <Print Job> panel under Color Management / Profile.
In the screen shot below I have selected a profile for my HP printer and paper. And that's where you select a profile for your printer and paper.
You do not click on ICM in your printer dialog. You click there only when you want your printer to manage colors.
So try to print by selecting the profile in the print Module as indicated and do not click on ICM.
By the way: Which OS? Are you on a Mac?

How can I add "Edit with Photoshop CS5" to the Edit With options?

I think it has something to do with the order in which the PSE and PS are installed on your machine.

  • Lens chromatic correction from Lightroom 5.7 to Photoshop CS5

When I open a raw file (NEF) from Lightroom 5.7 to Photoshop CS5 all modifications done in Lightroom are taken into account by CS5 except lens chromatic correction. Does someone know how to proceed to get lens chromatic correction taken into account too?

That's great, but what exactly did it - matrix (gamma) profiles instead of LUT? It would be good to know for future reference.
I have seen small problems with LUT profiles in Firefox, like black clipping up to value 6 or 7, but Lightroom seems to behave well with LUT profiles here. The problem with LUT profiles is that they are "heavier" and more complex, because they contain complete tables for all possible transformations - whereas matrix profiles do it by much simpler mathematical formulae. LUT is more accurate, but matrix simpler and more reliable.
Not that I think accuracy is a problem with Eizo CGs. Which is why it's a bit puzzling that ColorNavigator has LUT as default. I use mostly matrix targets these days, my feeling is that the simpler the profile, the better.

I get an error message saying 'An error has caused Photoshop to stop working correctly. Windows will close the programme and notify you if a solution is available'. I have had no notification. My old Photoshop CS5 works fine, but as I'm paying for CC2014 I would like to use it. I have tried renaming the 'sniffer' file to 'snifferold' as bobmiller4002 suggested but the problem is not resolved. Lightroom works fine.

    Hi Nancy,
I'm not sure I have the answers to all your questions. Although I use Photoshop and Lightroom extensively, I'm not a 'techy'.
    My system;
    Packard bell imedia S2885
    1TB hard drive
    500G RAM
    Windows 8.1   64- bit
    Intel core i5 4440
If I open Photoshop cc14 without opening any image, I still get an error message that reads: 'Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled enhancements which use the graphics hardware'.
There is also a link to the Adobe help site, but I'm not sure exactly what I should be downloading from there.
             Thanks,

  • How can I import photos from iPhoto-library to edit in Photoshop CC? - and save it back to the iPhoto-library?

How can I import photos from iPhoto-library to edit in Photoshop CC? - and save it back to the iPhoto-library?

How to access iPhoto images for use in Photoshop
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name} > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
5, Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop from file on desktop.
7  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.

  • Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at (file path to image) for editing. it wil

I have been using lightroom since Beta and this is the first issue that I can't seem to fix.
I was working on some files editing in external editors - PS5 & Niksoftware I had worked on 4 or 5 images no problems, working awesome as normal.  Then I decided to get rid of one of the files - an edited image - when it asked to remove from lightroom or from disk, I clicked, remove from disk. I never do that but trying to be better with space.  Then tried to edit a different image and the error "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at (NEF - the proper location) for editing. it will not be opened." comes up.
I looked on line and one answer was to delete the preference file and then restart, which also meant reloading the catalogue.  All of which worked no problem but the error still is coming up.  I have restarted lightroom and the computer a couple of times, in different sequences
I have lightroom 5.3 64 bit on windows 7, as I said all working perfectly until deleting one file.
Anybody have any ideas for me?

I had this error message, too. Turned out it was due to my use of subst to create a virtual drive letter for my photo library. See Lightroom 3.2 - Using subst to a local drive fails for the solution! (even with LR 5.5, still)

  • Edit the document without having to save a copy

At my work we get lots of plans in pdf format, that often need rotating. However, more often than not we get a box saying "This document restricts certain features...." yadda yadda yadda, and makes us save a copy before we can edit it. This is very time consuming. Is there any way to remove this feature or get around it so we can just rotate the damn document without going through all this hassle?
    Thanks

This message appears when the Extended Reader Rights have been applied to
the document in Acrobat. You can ask whoever is providing you with them not
to do it, in order to save you that extra step, but if they do, there's no
other way around it, I'm afraid. Maybe you could use an Action (if you
have Acrobat Pro) to save copies of multiple files, so you won't
have to process them one by one.

  • Can no longer edit in Photoshop CS5

I recently uninstalled Lightroom 2.7 in favor of using my recently installed Lightroom 3.  I did the same in terms of unintalling Photoshop CS3 in favor of using only my recently installed version of Photoshop CS5.  As a result, coincidentally or otherwise, nothing works right now.  When I open LR3 images and go to "Edit In", Photoshop is greyed out and so I am unable to do any editing outside Lightroom itself.
Does anyone know how I might remedy this problem?  I am at the point of total frustration with both programs and am about ready to uninstall both of them and start all over again (which I dread).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks much.

Just reinstall CS5. I believe you can do a repair to fix the problem. When you removed CS3 the uninstaller removed some files needed by CS5.
